"Loose" Shoulder
My left shoulder acts up now and then. Very randomly. This morning while driving with my arm on the armrest, I felt a mini clunk when I moved. Hmm. With my arm still up there, I pushed on the side of my shoulder with my other hand. I could feel my humerus move slightly (toward my body) with a little clunk feeling.

How normal is this? I'm wondering if this looseness is what hits me sometimes and makes it so I have shooting pain in that arm. And finally, should I be tackling this with more rotator cuff work (I do just a little external rotation stuff now).

I don't think this is anything new for me, as I've been to a shoulder specialist a couple times and she mentioned that side was slightly loose and no big deal. But that was ~2 years and 500,000 yards ago.

Have you dislocated your shoulder previously?

My wife has/had loose shoulders. One she dislocated a few years ago. Had surgery to tighten it. The other, she caught a cabinet that was falling off the wall at work and had some rotator cuff damage. Had surgery to tighten it, too. From what I understand though, she had somewhat loose shoulders to begin with. So you could almost say she was pre-disposed to shoulder problems. However, she swam a ton when she was a kid and never had problems. Also, on her second surgery, the doc told her that had her shoulder not been loose, the damage could have been a lot worse.

No. No single traumatic injuries that I can recall. I do remember it clunking when I'd do overhead presses a few years back when I lifted weights. Once warmed up it would stop that.

Sounds like a problem I've been battling recently. I have seen my ortho and my PT and they have recommended shoulder stabilization and scapular strengthening excercises. There's a tremendous amount of detail that I don't pretend to understand, but many of the sports we partake in strengthen the anterior muscles of our bodies (pecs, etc) and leave the posterior muscles weaker. The PT exercises are meant to help stabilize the system. Often if there is too much "looseness", they can go in a surgically stabilize the shoulder, but I want to avoid that as long as possible!

Possible SLAP shoulder- You can google it.

I started a thread on my SLAP

If it keeps up and you get pain in addition to the cluncking (which I get a lot of) go see a shoulder specialist.
