So, what does everyone think of THIS!
I found it a bit interesting...to say the least.
This is the guy who won the Race2Replace for those who didn't know.

I think he doesn't really want to make a career out of cycling.

Seems he's getting the most out of his 15 minutes of fame. Big talk, but now he has to let his legs do the talking. Be interesting to see if he accomplishes anything or if we don't even remember his name in 2 years.

I say good for him. Too bad all the dopers will close ranks and call him a liar.

Agreed. Plus plugging away at the media to pay those bills.

AJ is a good buddy of mine and I can assure you that he is more committed to his goals than anyone I know.

His view on doping within the sport of cycling is not some marketing ploy but rather a very real observation of events that drastically affected his past.

Looks like once again, there are a number of STers intent on chopping the tall poppy down.

Before you make another derogatory remark, I would love to know how many of you have been close enough to professional cycling to have an educated opinion on how prevalent doping is.

Hmmmmm. That's what I thought.

So we cannot have an OPINION on an article in the news unless it's the same opinion as yours? The way the article is written and what is laid out in it, gives me my impression. Yours may be different.

I mean let's call this what it is.

There is a significant number of people who are very touchy about the subject of drugs in cycling because they want to protect the reputation of their beloved Lance. So, when anyone, however credible comes out with claims about drugs in cycling, they jump all over him.

Now, I have never heard AJ talk specifically about Lance, so it is anyone's guess/opinion as to whether there were drugs involved in that situation.

But the inference of the folks posting on this topic are that AJ is lying and trying to somehow tarnish the sport of cycling for his own benefit.

I am here to tell you that, since I personally know the dude, I find that offensive and just plain wrong. AJ is a stand up dude and that is a matter of fact, not opinion.

My comment that clm agreed with had nothing to do with his doping stance. That is certainly worthy. What struck me was, here's this guy signing with Herbal Life/Bike America Racing Team and talking about how he's going to be the man in two years. Pretty easy for an Herbal Life rider to talk about wearing the yellow jersey. It will be a lot harder to go from there to a Pro Tour team when he's not even racing in Europe. Like I said his legs will do the talking or this is all just hype and we won't remember him.

Ric,

I agree with you that at that level there are plenty of guys who talk the talk. 99.999999% will never make it but the one guy who does is out there right now with his vision firm in his mind and an uncompromising determination to achieve it.

It is my opinion :-) that AJ is that guy.

Apologies to CLM if my PI index was unnecessarily elevated :-)

Tell your buddy AJ that while I agree with his stance on PEDs, he comes across as an arrogant asshole. He's way past cocky. If he sincerely wants to find his way onto a world class team, I hope he's willing to learn when it's appropriate to shut his mouth and let his results to the talking. Sounds like this guy is trying to be the T.O. of cycling.

Come on, give me one guy whose at the very top of his sport who wasn't definite in his purpose (dare I say, cocky) before he got there.

As far as "letting his results speak for themself", I think he's absolutely doing that. I mean less than 2 years ago I remember AJ and I talking in the office of the gym that we both worked at and he told me he was going to win the Tour De France.

In that space of time, I have seen him go from severely out of shape - from an endurance perspective (sorry, AJ) to one of the best cyclists in the country and honestly, the only thing I can attribute this to is a level of definitiveness in his purpose that I have not seen in anyone else.

I can see how it could come across as cockiness but to me, cockiness is when your confidence far exceeds your competence to achieve your goal. This guy has plenty of competence and I am sure that his single mindedness will pay off.

You never know who is lurking, and the internet solves all.

AJ was 14th at an Olympic trial that anybody could enter. Public race for the most part. THen to tell his gym buddy that he is going to win the Tour De France? WOW.

Like everybody else said, he is just being a media whore. Since he turned down the Discovery job, tell him I am putting together a local CAT 3 team to race crits this year, and I would love to have him!

I was top 10 in three different events that year at the trials, Ironman victory, here I come!

Your kidding right about his results speaking for themselves and proving his point? He finished 48th out of 53 riders in the USPro TT. I mean that's better then I would do, but not exactly I'm heading to the Tour de France good. There is very little chance this article would have been published without his association to Discovery last year and his current "decision" not to ride for them because of Basso... who is he kidding?

Hello Everyone! It is me! Yes, the one most of you now hate. I understand most of your anger towards me, and if I would have read the same article, I would hate me too. If I can say one thing in my defense, the article in the paper represented 5 minutes of a two hour interview. The editors wanted to make the story sell papers and I understand that. My intention for the story was to call out the dopers of the sport, and everything that the article mentions, is something that I said. HOWEVER! I said a lot that was not printed!!! Like...Cycling is the greatest and most beautiful sport in the world, no doubt about it. During the interview I continually mentioned that the story should not be about the 50% (estimate) of the riders that are doping, but about the other 50% of the guys who know the other half is doping. But continue to stay clean no matter what the cost. I also said that cycling is by far the hardest sport in the world and there is no other sport that requires as much from the human body. Also, I talked of the sponsorship problems and why teams were forced to get results. More than anything, I have sympathy for the guys in this sport who have to dope. Nobody wants to dope, but some guys feel it is a necessity to put food on the table, can you blame them? On the situation with Discovery... They are an awesome organization with some amazing people working for them. By the way, I already gave away or sold everything that I won because I needed the money, so I won't give it back. But all I know is this, and please apply the same situation to yourself. You have raced your entire life, given your blood, sweat, and tears for this sport. You have paid your dues, moved your way up through the ranks, and now you are one of the best pros in the world. This is your year to win the Tour de France, and you are one of the favorites! You have trained your ass off, starved your ass off, and did everything in your power to get the last watt out of your legs, except for take a transfusion or drug to boost performance. Now would you just step aside and give up a Tour win because someone mentioned your name in a telephone conversation. HELL NO! It would have taken every cop in France to drag me off of that starting line. Also, if it means racing the tour or not, I would give every bodily fluid I have for them to test my DNA and clear my name. No matter what the extremely small chances are that I would turn up a false positive. LISTEN LADIES AND GENTLEMEN! We can never solve a problem that we don't admit exists. If you all only knew what I have seen and what I have given up because of doping, you would see me in a much different light, but I know that I look like an ass right now. However, over time you will see where my heart truly is and what it's made of. By the way, to those of you who said I suck or have no talent, or that I will never make it to Europe, THANKYOU! Get ready to taste your toes! :)

I guess you have to take everything in it's proper perspective.

I am saying that AJ's rate of improvement over the past 2 years has been scary. Less than 2 years ago, I was out riding the streets of Gainesville with AJ and a friend of his and I don't think my heart rate broke 90. Admittedly, in AJ's defense, it was an easy base ride. I didn't have a power meter on my bike back then but I would be shocked if we were doing more than 120watts. Now, at the sort of power #'s that AJ is doing for his base training, I would be hard pressed to sit on his wheel without my HR exceeding 190! (slight exaggeration but only slight).

The most important point is, he has done this by surrendering his life to the sport. Committing 100%.

Even at the front of the peloton, I don't believe that there are many who commit 100%. I've heard it from Lance (via interview), or in the tri world from Gordo and Scott Molina.

It is this rare total commitment that I am basing my opinion on.

That said, I understand that this is something that you have to truly see and experience firsthand to grasp the power
involved.

It is a little disappointing though, that when someone states a goal (however ambitious it may be), the instinctive response of the majority is to write them off as 'cocky'.

I wish AJ all the success he deserves.

Alan.

I don't think anyone here said you have no talent. In fact, in a bike race, you'd no doubt smoke 99% of the people who post here. What I think we all felt was objectionable was how you predicted that you'd soon be wearing the yellow jersey. You've never ridden the tour before, so those are some really cocky statements. I hope that you realize that your attitude will turn a lot of team directors off. But I imagine that you probably don't really care.

But I agree with your thoughts on PEDs. And I respect the fact that you have the balls to speak so openly about it. But frankly, if you want to make a living at this, it might serve you well to tone down the bragging until you have a few higher profile wins under your belt.

I'm just amazed at the number of people who think drug use is less prevelant than more prevelant at the top few levels of sports.

Where did anyone say they "hate" you?

Where is anyone showing anger towards you?

Most of us are stating an opinion, based on one article that you yourself say under-represents you. Welcome to the media world.

Who said there isn't a problem in the sport?

Now you are putting words into our mouths that we never said. As the poster above said, too much talk and not enough action at present.

"Get ready to taste your toes!" WTF???
