The wife and I are getting close to being eligible and are sorting through options. Regarding spousal benefits, is it correct that she can take her earlier retirement benefit at 62 and then claim 50% spousal benefits when I take my benefit at full retirement age of 67 (we are same age)? If so this would work out favorably for us since 50% of my amount is > that her amount at 62 (and 67 for that matter). Any info appreciated.

I think you are correct but you can go to the social security website and get the answer right from the horses mouth.

I believe the way it works is that a surviving spouse get whatever the larger amount is at time of death. You can plug all your numbers into that scenario for her, of course then you have to go first...
The spousal benefit in the OP’s question is different from the death benefit you’re describing.
