Honestly, it looks set up, or the guy pumping the gas isn't as innocent as it seems. He reacted far too fast for it to be a random incident.

I read some comments in another forum that stated that this took place in Brazil. I agree that he reacted pretty fast. Carjackings may be common there, so he may have already planned on what to do.

If it was Holly would, he would have casually flicked his lit cigarette into the van as it drove off.

Which, in the real world, would have done absolutely nothing:

The experiments conducted for this study consisted of 70 distinct tests involving a total of 723 cigarettes and over 4,500 instances of exposure of a lit cigarette to ignitable concentrations of gasoline vapor in air. There were no instances of the ignition of gasoline vapors from the exposure of those vapors to a lit tobacco cigarette during any of the experiments

Some fun youtube videos where some sort of smoker type tries to light gasoline with a cigarette and failing miserably. On a couple, I found myself rooting for combustion. Alas, it never came.

Set-up?
Ever had Gasoline spilled on you or in the interior of a car?
You can't just hose that off....nobody would volunteer his car for it.

Unless the minivan is stolen and/or he's pumping water.

Lol, is it just me or is anyone else “concerned” That you have researched the efficacy of gasoline plus cigarettes?

It is ST though and we certainly have the collective expertise to PubMed anything to death.

I treated a burn patient years ago who was using some petroleum product, can’t remember if it was gas or something else, to clean stuff in the back of a van and blew himself up by lighting a cigarette.

Yes carjacking is very common in Brazil. When I went down there for Ironman over 10 years ago, my friend who is from there said to watch out for that, especially at night.

I've looked it up before. I teach science and one of my major objectives is to get my kids to stop using Hollywood/ TV as a basis for science concepts. Another one is to get kids to change their minds once faced with the data. It's an uphill battle.

The gasoline ignited because there was a flame from the lighter or matches. Cigarette itself has no flame. Remember the scene from Con Air where Cyrus the Virus throws a lit cigarette into a gasoline pool and torches the guy? That is Hollywood for you.
