It's very easy to start drifting into sub-genres and sub-sub-genres, but I would say that broadly speaking, I typically wouldn't put on religiously focused music except for classical pieces, and I typically wouldn't put on music that's super aggressive like some metal and some rap.

I also generally don't have much urge to listen to experimental music of any genre. I like solid recognizable melody and harmony. I'm definitely good with sophisticated music, but it can't be just seemingly random notes and sounds.

There's tons of great music that fits that description. Here's just a small eclectic collection of bands whose music is easily accessible to stream and sample (sorry, no country+western).

There's so much garbage set to music and so many alternatives that there's no reason to settle.

I didn't say that there's no decent music made in the religious genres, just that it doesn't do anything for me and I won't be listening to it.

Thanks for the Bandcamp support!!!

A lot of artists on there don't have the catalog, recognition, label support [if they're on a label AT ALL] nor simple 'playability' to get picked up by Spotify

Bandcamp reminds of the DIY days when you'd make master tapes in the garage, pay to get the singles physically pressed [or split with another artist], then take them home/back to the garage and mail them out yourselves

Except now we're talking laptops & emails/file sharing

And Bandcamp might be one of the only places to buy flac/CD-resolution files instead of mp3s. I'll still pick up CDs if the band makes them available.

don't know if this will ring a bell for anyone else, but there's an entire multilingual genre of moody Sinatra style ballads for men to sit alone at bars to drink Scotch to.

i'm not sure what it's called.

Country music is a very broad brush. All of the following fall under "country". Do you hate them all?

Marcus King: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dSt3EqSg4ZM

Sturgill Simpson: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gRk4-sIaL7Y

The same song as the above, covered by Post Malone (which is really good!): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ISuJrPQ3KA8

Brothers Osborne (video filmed around my general area): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E5RDEXpc8OY

Mickey Guyton: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TcBwsOPmNLA

The Highwomen: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AGPsIUKyZhQ

Who are 6 bands that have never been in my kitchen Alex?

LOL thanks that gave me a good laugh!

Reggae. Just never liked it. And I like all other African/black derived music...jazz, hip-hop, soul, samba, funk, R&B, etc. Just not reggae.

On the sub-genre side I couldn't stand the recent "folk rock" movement typified by Mumford and Sons. When M&S comes on, I have to scramble for the skip button.

Outside of Bob Marley I've not heard much that I thought was much good.

I posted in this thread already, huge Marley fan (seeing Ziggy and Stephen play his songs next week actually). I recently stumbled across Stick Figure and love just about everything he’s recorded. Great vibe music, ethereal, classic roots reggae feel to most of his work. It’s essentially one guy who taught himself to play and sing, produce, and record, though he tours with a band for live shows.

Check these out when you have time.

If you like Stick Figure check out The Elovaters. Awesome band with a similar vibe. They've toured and collaborated with Stick Figure and are from the same area.

Modern mainstream music. It is so fucking bad right now.

I was on vacation recently and a family member played some modern country (which I generally don't like) and I remember thinking, "Wow. There's a melody. There's a hook in the chorus. The beat is something I can tap my foot to. And on top of all of that, someone actually played those instruments."

I still like bands that are relevant today, but I've found that there's not a single group I'm into, regardless of genre, that started after 2013 when I turned 40.
