Meanwhile the Bonhomme is in Brownsville being torn apart.

From your link: "The criminal investigation into the cause of the fire is separate from several other inquires on how the Navy and other agencies effectively battled the blaze. A command investigation into the details of the fire fighting effort is due out in September."

That a 19 year old seaman apprentice started a fire on a Sunday morning in port homeport with only a duty section aboard is not the story here. My guess as to why it was so bad? The fire suppressant system installed for that space was red tagged out of commission but yet the flammable materiel was not removed. This is the real story here. I'll wait till September when they place fault with the senior officers aboard. They are the ones ultimately responsible for the current surplus of steel for razor blade construction.

Don't think this was your Navy nor my Navy.

You are correct.

A lot of factors going on there , Arson, tampering with evidence, faulty safety system etc and a disappointed Seal wannabe.
** want to go to BUDS ? Have a “A” school lined up because chances are you will fail. Then you get assigned to a ship Undesignated , aka Deck Divsion , scraping and painting !
Long ago when I was in boot camp they asked if anyone wanted to go to BUDS.I said sure why not.We had to take the physical test swimming , running push ups etc. I passed but after talking to people and my Dad I decided to go to “A” , good decision for me.

The disgruntled seaman deuce lit the fire, but it seems the investigation has found some shit wrong with his chain of command. Interesting reading above.

Same report from gCaptian https://gcaptain.com/...RcmJMhK2p7zuL8ZHQRO0

“The loss of this ship was completely preventable,” Admiral William Lescher, the vice chief of naval operations, said.

“Although the fire was started by an act of arson, the ship was lost due to an inability to extinguish the fire,” the investigation report said

I was not there and have been off ships for a couple of decades but I did spent about 6 months on a ship that was in the yards. Not a bad assignment but it’s noisy and dirty and you have to live in it, and Asbestos!
In the yards we were assigned spaces to watch and keep squared away.Once the yard birds were gone for the day you would “secure the space “.

My second ship was smaller so we didn’t have a dedicated DC Men.
Our DC was the was the responsibility of the general crew.Mostly made up of engineering dept., we drilled a lot engineering spaces, fan rooms, electrical rooms and crew berthing etc.
I enjoyed drills I worked my way up to #1 nozzle man.
4 years on a ship we had two small fires a bilge fire and a electrical panel for a reefer.

The Navy was advised not to force this to trial, because it was unlikely to result in a conviction, but they chose to move ahead. I don’t think this result is a surprise.

Too much blame to go around?
I’ve been out long time, what’s the little anchor on his left arm?

There's a track record here with the USN trying to rail road Hartwig on the Iowa (BB-61) turret explosion

I've no idea what occured here but the Navy's record on prosecuting these cases is at the least suspect.

Nevertheless. Let us morn the loss of a great ship. The Bonny Dick!

It means he’s an unrated Seaman Recruit (E-1). If he was a higher pay grade, he’d have slashes, and if he was rated (Boatswain’s Mate, Personnelman, etc) he’d have some sort of rate insignia.

Unrated seamen have an anchor, airmen have an anchor with wings, and firemen have a wheel and wrench.

our son told me a great sea story about one time. It was on the Tarawa or the Bonny Dick but they [sailors] basically lied to the Marines and had them lined up in the passage ways for miles waiting for a ice cream social that was NOT going to be forthcoming

haha

From the account I read the Navy prosecutors had a problem with their key witness shifting his story. Arson appeared to be the right call and this guy was a good pick to be the match thrower as a disgruntled sailor, but was he the only available disgruntled sailor? The Damage control training that you and I lived through on a daily basis was found lacking here. The adherence to cleanliness standards, improper stowage of flammable material in spaces with installed fire protection systems being red tagged as OOC and firefighting equipment maintenance too were found lacking. Leadership onboard was found at fault and letters of censure made their way into service jackets of those officers. Hopefully the fleet learned a valuable lesson.

I shy away from saying not my navy, but yes a lot has changed since we served. The Oriskany and Forrestal fires in the sixties served our generation as lesson generators and highlighted spectacular failures not to repeat. I am sure this incident is being similarly used.

All in a day's work maintaining proper relations. You should ask your son if he was ever posted on deck as the mail buoy watch either as the lookout with binoculars to spot the buoy or as the sailor armed with a grappling hook and line to snag the bag of mail as the ship came alongside the buoy. Mild hazing for those first timers at sea was a thing.

Is he a Shellback or still a Pollywog. Crossing the line was an occasion for another ritual of mild hazing.

Our son is a shellback. They cut the line while he was deployed on the Tarawa.

He recently was selected for Chief Petty Officer. Apparently he's going through something called "Chief Season" right now. It amazes me but apparently a couple of chief selectees have dropped out or been 'kicked out' it's all kind of a mystery to me but his pinning ceremony for Chief will be later this month.

We're very proud of him.

He's very cryptic about this Chief Season thing. But we plan to be there for the pinning ceremony!

I have a friend who is now the MCPO in charge of training at Walter Reed. He was my Corpsman when he was selected for Chief. The shit they had him do was kind of funny, mostly busy work, just shy of hazing. He seemed to love it.

Now seeing him reach the pinnacle of his occ field is of course great to see.

I've asked our son this a couple of times. And he says he gets asked it all the time. "Why don't you become a officer?"

His answer is "Dad, I don't want to be a officer i want to be a Command Master Chief"

i sense that there is a reluctance to 'compete' against me professionally---but damn we're proud of him
