Pea Soup

I love it. So simple to make and since it's in the teens getting down to zero tonight ...

3 large shallots diced
5 cloves of garlic diced
3 large carrots diced
5 stalks celery diced
Pound of ham diced
Liquid smoke to taste
Marjoram to taste
Black pepper to taste
One pound split peas
3 boxes of beef bouillon

Brown the shallots
Add garlic for two minutes
Add celery and carrots til softened about five minutes
Add smoke pepper and marjoram
Add ham
Add peas
Add bouillon (I usually do two boxes cook simmer an hour add the third after an hour if getting too dry and then simmer another hour to hour half)

Eat with oyster crackers or crumbled saltines

Shouldn't your pea soup recipe have peas in it...? :)

I agree with you, though, one of my favourite hearty soups, I prefer a crusty Belgian loaf to the crackers... Interesting, the beef boullion... do you try for the low-sodium / no salt one since the ham will already be really salty?

I'd probably add some split peas too. ha

Spicy or chicken/apple sausage instead of ham. A few potatoes for texture.

Might have to make some this weekend!

Major omission ...oops

I usually bake bread to go with it but no time today

I use the boullion instead of salt and to up the flavor. My grandmother's recipe called for water and salt.

My mother used to make split pea soup and I loved it. My wife has a visceral reaction to english peas, so we don't have them in our house. When she was pregnant she ate a snow pea that had a pea that was bigger than normal. She lost her supper.

I LOVE PEA SOUP. crusty bread, or crackers along side are amazing.

My wife hates peas, so, no pea soup in our house. I'm currently eating lentil soup. It's ok, but, I prefer peas.

Long Chile was a silly place.

Usually the bread and a small bowl.... shockingly she has a snack later

Better if you have the ham bone. Cooking with the bone in the soup for hours to get all the marrow out.

I would suggest chicken stock rather than beef.

I love me some split pea soup. My moms was the best, although my wife got a recipe from a co-worker that is pretty damn close. Need to have homemade cornbread with it.

I noticed you have liquid smoke in yours and agree that the smokiness can be a game changer; my wife uses smoked ham in her recipe and it gives it just enough of that extra flavor. Just told her about this thread and she's making some this weekend.

I would also suggest skipping the liquid smoke.

Try adding some parsnips and a lot more carrots.

What’s the difference between pea soup and roast beef?

You can actually roast beef.

Ha. When I was in University, we would make a large lasagna and that would be the only thing we would eat for 3 days, breakfast and dinner.

Pea or a good vegetable soup qualify as foods I could eat as my only food for 3 days in a row.

I like the liquid smoke. I have tried using ham plus bacon and smoked ham hocks. The liquid smoke adds more flavor IMO. Also you'll notice I said to taste.

Carrot amount is just fine, there's a little piece in every bite.

Parsnips are for beef stew

I love pea soup made from frozen peas rather than the dried ones! So fresh tasting and good.

This.

Liquid smoke is an abomination.
