I'd say Grave of the Fireflies was impactful. Its a Ghibli movie (Japanese Anime) abut two orphaned children struggling to survive in Japan during WWII. The Pianist was good also, but not to the extent that I'll support Israel over the Palestinians or show sympathy to Israelis.

Just remembered Tsotsi. A really powerful movie. A young street thug steals a car only to discover a baby in the back seat. Set in South Africa.
