Meet results from the weekend, M53 year old

200IM 2:36.87scm; 2:21.32yds
100Fr 1:02.97, 56.72
400Fr 4.52.72, 5:34.72
100Fly 1:08.09, 1:01.34
200Fr 2:19.20, 2:05.40
100IM 1:12.85, 1:05.63

Meet report. Three day meet. I stopped my treadmill jogs and weights 1 week out. 2nd week out I had cut my yardage to down under 3K with longer rest intervals and more quality work. Meet week I did about 2K per practice pretty easy but tuesday I did some pace 50s that were quality and no pulling the last week either. Arms were pretty dead the last week so I wasnt expecting much of a drop except whatever the tech suit and shave would give me.

Day 1 I hit the water for warm up and felt really strong, it must be the shave thing. 200IM was great with a six second drop, next event on short rest was the 1free and it was decent but my underwaters were really poor and I realized it during the race but I still couldnt improve them.

Day 2 one event the 400 free. Huge 12 second drop from my prior swim 5 weeks ago. I guess I got some taper benefit there and split it 1:10, 1:14 high for middle hundreds and a 1:13 coming home. That was my best swim/biggest surprise of the meet. Still only good for 6th in my age group as this meet had some pretty stiff competition. I'd like to keep swimming this event in the future.

Day 3 three events and post saturday night work Christmas party for my girlfriend. I only had 1 beer and half a glass of wine so I wouldn't say it affected me too much was home around midnight. 1st event 100 fly out in 31.6 back in 36.4 uggh. Didnt hit my taper for that event as I died pretty hard the last 25. I was kinda hoping for a 31.5 and 35 but it was still a decent drop. 2nd event was the 200 free and it was probably my worst swim of the meet. At the 100 flip turn I literally missed the wall and had to reach back and push off with my big toe. I was dead in the water with no push off so I split it 107; 1:12. Last event was the 100IM and again I had a really poor back/breast turn but this time I took a stroke expecting the wall and literally the wall never came and I took another stroke to get there. The time was pretty solid on that one I probably lost half a second on that turn but I finished strong and got second in the heat out of an outside lane.

Overall results were solid I do think I was slightly under rested but I felt like I wanted to err on that side of the equation as I don't think I swim enough yards to do a longer one. Definitely need to work on starts, underwaters and turns. I think Im sticking with the middle distance events in the future I seem to be a little more competitive in my age group there. Next up I'm undecided right now but leaning toward some sprint tri in 2020. I just need to add in some biking to what I currently do and hope my knees hold up on the running.

Great meet report and some nice swims their Tony. I wish I could have been there with you all, this meet missed my window by a couple weeks. That is the problem when you get older, you have times you can race well, but those times' dont always align with the actual meets! You hit a good taper, had a little bad luck in an event or two, par for the course of a 3 day full meet, Nice job, great drops in times for an AARP member!

On your point working on turns the other day we did sets of 100's where in between the flags you swam free and flag to wall to flag you did turn practice.

First 100 = fly turns
Second 100 = back turns
Third 100 = breast turns
Fouth 100 = IM turns

repeat as my times as you like

The goal was to go easy in between flags recovering free and hammering the stroke specific turns so you're not doing them dying for oxygen.

Thanks for the comments. I have access to my daughters old coach, he is on the deck often when i practice, I think I am going to hit him up for some drills. My daughter said I should do typewriters and boomers to practice my underwaters. whatever those are lol. Okay so just to wrap this up I took monday off and went to the pool tuesday morning and my main set was a timed 1650. Finished in 20:21 and split it 6:07, 6:12, 6:11 and 1:51. Splits revealed 36 high/37 lows the whole way. Had to do 3 open turns to drain the water out of my goggles but other than that it was pretty uneventful swim. I self train so I felt that I needed to do one final fitness check just to see if I had left anything on the table by not having enough endurance. With that question resolved now I think I will plan to tweak my training just a little to do more sprint work and a little more weight room stuff.

Swam a 22:23 SCM 1500 (Age 62). Longest pool race I’ve done in 42 years. First 400 in 5:46 then pretty steady 1:30/100. I seeded myself at 22:30, so pretty close. The guy on one side swam ~ 2 minutes faster than his seed time and the guy on the other side about 2 minutes slower, so it felt like a solo swim without a pace clock (and of course no watches).

Bellevue Masters mile (1500 SCM)

5:33.44 6:11.34
6:48.94 7:26.60
8:04.20 8:41.85
9:19.16 9:56.80

11:51.56 12:30.16
13:08.67 13:47.14

15:43.42 16:22.28
17:01.07 17:39.78
18:17.51 18:53.80

Sucked as there was a mix up on entry. Online registration failed so email was sent and for some reason she failed to get me seeded. I ended up in slowest heat next to lady seeded at 40 mins. Met my goal of breaking 19 mins after 8 years of no pool rqcing.

Nice swims there! I have a meet coming up this weekend, entered in the 400free, 200Im, 100IM and 50 fly. I'm hoping to break your 400IM time in the 4free. I haven't decided if I'm going to suit up or not.

Copying from the Feb Fish thread (and bump)

Hastiin -

Here are the results from meet. IM I was really tight and dont think i was warmed up but a little fast than previous. 100 Fly felt good and happy with that. 200 Free was a fail due to leg cramping on second 50 (27, 33, 29, 29) but able to shake it off.

200 Y IM
2:11.90

100 Y Fly
57.58

200 Y Free
1:59.77

thanks, but I really swam like garbage at that meet. 50 fly was a second slower than in the fall. my IM sucks anyway, mostly because my breaststroke is so bad, and I went nearly as fast yesterday in practice as I did in the 400 at that meet. (2x200 on 2:50 - 2:30 and 2:29)

The 400 I didn't take out hard enough. I got to the 300 and it felt like I could have done an 800 at that pace.

I also did the fly leg of the medley relay, immediately after getting out of the water from the 50 fly. It was literally out of the water and I was the 3rd swimmer, maybe 2 minutes recovery at most.... completely gassed after the relay. Ouch.
