You are correct, murders happen every day but this one made the 'front page' of CNN, Fox and everything in between.

It is also a visceral reaction to my FB feed where some of my conservative friends were already rumbling about 'illegals' but details has shown otherwise.

ETA: and I wanted to beat kahuna to this in case it really was an illegal that committed this crime.

I don't understand how something like this could happen other than the accused is insane.

I don't know why this made to the front page but not some others. So maybe random murders like this really is not very common.

This is so sad... especially I also have a young daughter, I just can't imagine the pain her parents must be going through right now.

Move to Chicago, 25 murders this month and counting. Why is this not in the news every freekin day? That is crazy. Used to live there, won't be going back anytime soon.

You guys act like you don't know how this works.

Cute college girl murders are often front page national news. This has the added titillation of her being a foreigner here pursuing her dreams and a top notch golfer/student.

And it was just a random crazy guy, which gets the old limbic system going in the "well that could happen to anyone (me!)" sense.

Some "thug" from the hood or one of their kids getting gunned down just doesn't have the national appeal. Fewer people are likely to click on that link, read that story...

Sounds like an untapped market. Start a Chicago crime web site. Watch the big bucks flow in.

Random murders are very uncommon. That's why I'll never understand the need for people to have guns for protection. Protection from what?

You should keep an eye on your spouse because they are far more likely to kill you.

Our society is infatuated with celebrity. Be it celebrity of a sports, entertainment, or political nature.

Also, she was a "pretty girl" taken down by the nasty scary drifter.

It plays into our fears of the unknown evil lurking next to us everyday.

In reality, it is horrible, but it's also incredibly dehumanizing to the victims of murder in somewhere like Chicago on a daily basis.

The reaction there is generally "yeah, it's a nasty area with a bunch of gangbangers killing each other". So, who cares.

It's the immediate judgement that those murders happening to someone who was likely a criminal themselves, with zero proof (even if it is often true).

But, in this case, we see a pretty and innocent girl murdered.

That's the "why". Is that right? Up to you.

FWIW, if you take the total time of Hurricane Florence to be about two weeks......so far it's about the same number of people dead there as would be killed in Chicago during the same time frame. Close maybe?

Perceived innocence of the deceased is a very strong motivator in what's presented and what isn't. And that fact tends to transcend political beliefs.

The point remains ~ here in the LR bubble ~ that it was a nasty scary 'Murican drifter, so it doesn't register on BK's radar.

I'm sorry. I just got to this thread. What's supposed to be registering on my radar?

Ah, I see. Well, as far as newsworthiness goes, it's actually notable, mostly because it was a seemingly random murder (scary thing) of a seemingly defenseless female (even scarier), by a drifter (also very scary) and in a bucolic locale like Iowa's generally is. From a news reporting standpoint, it's a fairly sexy story, speaking baldly (though every sympathy I have goes out to that poor woman and her family and I hope the murderer gets what's coming to him, quickly).

Not many murders are committed in Iowa, relatively speaking, after all, either by illegal immigrants or those lawfully here within our country. Especially not when compared to Chicago or my hometown, Detroit. That helps add to its newsworthiness quotient as well.

Was that good enough, xenophobically speaking? I can never tell. ;-)

Yep, two biggest dangers to kill you are you and your spouse.

The spouse and other family members are always looked at first by the cops, because they're often the ones who did the dirty deed.

Because you rarely hear about these horrible crimes in places like rural Iowa.

My wife watches a lot of Murder Porn on Discovery ID. It's always the spouse. No one else cares enough about you to kill you.

Don't I know that. I'm worth more to my wife dead than I am alive. And she shot expert with her M4 again this year. So if you don't hear from me for several days you'll know what happened. ;-)
