Have a friend there but can't seem to get in touch. Just wondering how nasty Florence has been in the area?

Not very. I wouldn’t worry about your friend, if he/she was in Charlotte for the storm.

Thanks. That's what I suspected.

From a Chicago transplant currently living in Charlotte:

Hurricane Florence update - Conditions are dire but we're moving onto the balcony for Goose Island Bourbon County Stout enjoyment. Roscoe and Chase have gotten into the Cheeseburger treats. Never you fear, southern stoopidity is keeping spirits up by mind numbingly hilarious moronic acts.

The local news has gotten into the 24/7 Hurricane porn coverage. Rest assured, not CBS - they know better to preempt LSU V Auburn for 0.5 inches of rain and breezy conditions.

My favorite #HurricaneFlorence moment was a neighbor dutifully taking her Fall wreath off her door on account of a building email offering hurricane prep steps - one being to take your wreath down. The wreath was on an INDOOR DOOR. As they say in the South, "Bless her heart."

Not as bad as Wilmington - I will get back to that in a second.

My son and another college buddy just left to drive back to UNC Charlotte. Instead of taking 64 west to 49 SW (which becomes a 2-lane road), their plan is to take I40 & I85 so they don't have to deal with the flooding of the other two roads. It is a bit longer taking the interstate, but it should be safer. Luckily for them, UNCC and most of the dorms are built on a hill.

Back to Wilmington - my wife just told me that my son's girlfriend is taking the train out to Charlotte on Wednesday, then my son will drive her back to Cary Saturday or Sunday so she can "possibly" go back to UNC Wilmington. The UNCW school website is down, because the area has been without power since Wednesday or Thursday, so she isn't sure when classes will resume.
