About Macca backing up his ts:
He backed up all his ts EXCEPT when he ts about kona, he took a long, painful trip till he could win it.
He admited some time after, that he was full egocentric about kona being easy and after dnf it, he take it seriusly, learn the lessons change diet, training etcetcetc. He did not just win regional stuff , he win the most important races around (at that time) and destroying the best of the sport, at that time, in the process. It was kinda funny "watching" him destroy everyone outside kona and then being humbled by kona and others for some years.
