$1000-$1500 Bike and Good Bike Shop in Niles/South Bend Area

My friend is looking for a bike around $1000-$1500, and wanted some ideas. He said he was looking at a Trek 1500, do you guys have any sugesstions? He was looking for something to race duathlons on but maybe road races too. A lot of the time it will be used as a cross training for running since he has been injured a lot. He was a sweet running before all the injuries so he will probably do well on the bike. SO he wants something he can compete with. He is the same size as me and I fit into both cervelo and felt and was thinking he should go with a dual or a F75 (good review on Bikesport). I know the whole fit thing but just sugesstions to look at.
Also maybe a good bike shop to look around at. I know he went to one and they were talking about stand over height as the best way to size a bike, so maybe some place with a little more knowledge in the Southern Michigan/Southe Bend area to look or buy.
Thanks Nick

I spent 6 years in South Bend. I'd recommend taking the time to go to a shop in Chicago (there are many great options).

Further, due to the chip-seal, seasonal weather, etc., I'd strongly recommend that your friend buy a Cyclocross bike as his first bike. It's the most easily adapted to a number of usages. Salsa and Redline make nice entry bikes.

Chain Reaction in Buchanan, Mi. The three owners have triathlon and mtn biking racing experience. Great guys. I bought my bike there and feel comfortable with the service.

Pro Form, South Bend. Many triathletes, duathletes and road racers frequent this store. I just don't know anything about their service or bikes.
