Virgin Atlantic goes Gender Fluid on Uniforms
Quote | Reply
i think this move has genius. Virgin Atlantic says staff can now choose between skirtsuit/pantsuit no matter what their gender.

i can't imagine any hardworking attendant would voluntarily go for pantyhose/heels/tight skirt but that's my comfort bias talking.

will this spread to other gendered-uniform fields?

I would think if a biological make wanted to wear a skirt that would end up being a human rights thing so not sure companies have much control of that. Women being able to wear pants is good for women. Not much glamor in airline industry anymore (after all plastic forks) anyway.

The airline will also start using optional pronoun badges for crew and passengers, who can request them at check-in to ensure people use their preferred pronouns. Its ticketing systems will also allow people whose passports have gender neutral markers ā€“ available in the US, India and Pakistan ā€“ to travel using those gender codes and the title Mx.

I was talking with my wife about this a few days ago, specifically regarding her kidsā€™ private school, which does not require uniforms. It would be nice if they did, for all the obvious reasons parents can appreciate, but we agreed that itā€™s silly to require girls to wear skirts when pants are a perfectly reasonable option. Iā€™m sure there are more than a handful that do, but my guess is that itā€™s far from the norm in primary private education.

Itā€™s an odd message theyā€™re sending to girls with their dress codes presentlyā€¦donā€™t you dare show too much leg, but you damn sure will show us someā€¦

in the UK 90% of all secondary school kids wear uniforms, and most schools they're still gendered, though that's changing.

little girls get around the limitations with very thick tights, so running around the playground/climbing etc is not as restricted as it might seem

but yeah it's a weird throwback to my eyes -- and don't get me started on Siri and Alexa defaulting as female . . .

I recently shared my gym uniform story, and it led me to ask my brother - who still lives in Haddonfield - "how it would go over today?" and he said they've relaxed things quite a bit there, uniform-wise

But they're all the same homophobic racist motherfuckers they've always been

I once dated someone from South Africa, it was the same deal down there. She said: "It's better with uniforms because then people don't get made fun of for not having the most stylish clothes".

BLeP: "Of course, so they only get made fun of for being fat instead. Much better."

Funny you mentioned that, I saw a twitter post about the female assistant voice and itā€™s been circling my cranium ever since.

At first I thought, hmm, never thought of it. It does seem to reaffirm the patriarchal workplace hierarchy, but I think Iā€™ve landed on the truth that female voices are just generally more pleasing to the ear than male voices. At least, coming from my male perspective. But I think women find attractive women attractive more so than do men with attractive menā€”itā€™s a comfort level on average thing more so than a harmful negative gender stereotype issue, in my view.

That said, if I could change my Google assistant voice to Joe Pesci or Jeff Goldblum Iā€™d to it in a heartbeat.

And Siriā€™s default voice triggers me. Should it really take four full seconds after being summoned to respond with a ā€˜ā€¦yeah?ā€ then have not a clue as to what your asking? Sheā€™s like the hot girl of AI who always got by on looks and clearly in over her head.

i'm sure we saw the same meme

am the opposite -- for me high pitched female voices are not soothing. Learned that when I worked for Japanese companies in the back when, when the women were on the phone in that language their pitch went up an octave.

I would reprogram the AI to Rafe Fiennes doing Hungarian accent option.

Don't know about more pleasing to the ear (I think that depends much more on the individual than on the gender), but to my ear the higher pitch of female voices makes for clearer understanding in noisy(-ish) surroundings.
Some yeras ago the public transport authority in my town held a competition and let the customers vote on who should voice the automated announcements in the city busses. The majority voted for one of the male options. Deep voice, very pleasant to listen to, but sometimes you can really not make out what is being said over the sound of the motor, people chatting etc.

Joe Pesci giving directions: You're gonna turn up here. Right here!!! Here, you idiot!!! Now we gotta turn around, ya moron!!! Look what you made us do!!!

Jeff Goldblum: You're uh, probably, um, want to make a turn here ... or not. It's ok. We'll find a way, I'm sure. I'm pretty sure. Yeah, I'm sure

ā€œRafe Fiennes doing Hungarian accent optionā€œ

Christoph Waltz in his Hans Landa character voice.

Also Christopher Walken.

Betty White as Rose Nylund.

Jerry Stiller as Frank Constanza.

I would pay a monthly fee for any of these.

This is still one of the greatest SNL skits ever.

Will Ferrell goes off script and Jeff Goldblum is flummoxed.

In terms of hearing loss we lose the high tones first so maybe a deep voice is more understandable for old people. (Like me)

I think the Darwinian playground reality is a person would be made fun of for both their clothes and their fatness. So perhaps it's better to take one of those variables out of the equation.

Does anyone share my opinion that flight attendants have to be too dressed up? I often think "I wish you could wear something comfier" when I see the outfits, the womens especially. I'd be thrilled to see them in jeans and a logo t shirt, to be honest.

maybe she's born with it, maybe it's chlorine

I would offer two counterpoints.

1. Iā€™ve flown a bunch, especially overseas. Without exception, the flights where service has been the best have also been the flights where the attendants looked the most professional and dressed up.

2. If the flight attendants only have to wear jeans and a t-shirt, imagine what the passengers will wear. Iā€™ve already seen people flying in stuff I wouldnā€™t wear in public anywhere. Iā€™ve seen grown adults flying in (no kidding) pajamas. Iā€™ve seen them in clothes that look like their club outfits. Iā€™ve seen then in stuff I might expect to see at a water park.

it looks sexy, deliberately. Many airlines used to require their stewardesses to be single.

these are vintage photos from the 60s and 70s and it's not as extreme today, but still

No. Do you really want them blending in to look like the passengers?

Personally I prefer dresses over pants any time. But I never wear heels.

And Jesus Christ people, thereā€™s 12 Siri options in English. My Siri is an Irish dude.
