Garmin Connect Calendar Activity Color Schemes Removed
Quote | Reply
Hi all - It's not often I open a post. Is anyone else frustrated that Garmin removed the color scheme from activities in the Garmin Connect Calendar?

They attempted this a few years back but reverted back after some pushback.

The activity colors provide a great visual to see if we've balanced our training appropriately.

If you agree, please reply so that Garmin understands that this is a good feature. At lease give us the option to use colors.

Thanks!

You don't like a calendar full of forest green squares?

yes, this is annoying. but i'm frustrated with a lot more with Garmin Connect than the colors on the calendar.

both the website and the app frustrate me. I just can't seem to easily (or at all) look at data the way I want, and it's just generally a chore to use on either platform. if i want to check my weekly running mileage history at-a-glance, I can do it on the strava app OR website in a matter of 3 seconds. takes 2 clicks (website), and data doesn't pause to load it just instantly filters my activity types. on GC, I can't do that on the app at all, and on the website it takes 6 clicks and after each of those clicks you have to wait for data to load/refresh.

i think garmin needs to retool the entire connect experience. i don't find it that great.

Connect is pretty much broken, and their segment detection is completely broken. You match segments if you've covered any part of the segment. When creating a segment, the start and end points have terrible granularity, so you may end up with a spot 50-100 feet away from the desired spot. Their import of GPX and TCX files errors out if the file has extra spaces. You can't resize things on the dashboard. But at least my ride is in pretty colors on the map. :)

I do still see a different colour for swims on GC on the interweb but GC on the mobile on my iPhoneX is still full of colour.

Say wut? I must not be understanding what you are after. Cuz, I can certainly see weekly mileage on the App and GC web.

App: Menu -> Activities -> Running. Shows your run mileage for the last 7 days, and you can scroll to select view any run in the last 7. swipe left to scroll back by weeks. Swipe right to look at the last 4 weeks, or again for the last 12 months.

Web: Reports -> Running -> Activities. Same basic report. Three clicks.

Thank you for pointing this out and trying to help me, but it only proves my point further. What you describe is not a structured 7 day metric (i.e., fixed as Monday to Sunday week). It's a rolling 7 day period based on what day of the week you're looking at it. Pulling it up now, it shows me how many miles I ran since last wednesday, not how many miles I've run since the start of the start of the current week. So every day of the week you look at it, the 7 day totals change. This is useless to me. I want a total weekly mileage metric, not rolling 7 day totals.

On the web to see what I want, I have to click: reports, progress summary, group by week, running. You got me, it's 4 not 6 clicks, I didn't intentionally exaggerate. I tried to remember in my head. But it's still a pain, and not possible at all on the app.

On strava site, I can hover over training, click training log, and select running (or, since I leave it on running, it remembers that setting and it's just one click on training log). And strava shows it as a static calendar, not a rolling 7 day total. On the app, tap training, tap training log. Done.

Maybe it's a nitpick, but I imagine most people want to see weekly totals based on the actual calendar week, not a rolling 7 day total?

I prefer the rolling 7 day total...and how many days / weeks in a row it has been above a certain value. What I did, Sunday -> Monday is pretty artificial. What really matters is what the last 6 months looks like...not last week.

Besides I wouldn't exactly hold Strava up as a shining example of a UI/UX. For ever issue you can id in GC, I can find one in Strava, and another in TP. There's no single app that does "everything" I want. I hate strava for almost everything except seeing what my friends are doing. I don't consider it a valid training platform. But, then I don't really use GC for that much either....except for simple stuff like 7d/4w/12m rolling data.

Ultimately....To each their own, though.

Agree 100%, for sure. Funny you feel Sunday to Monday is artificial, I feel the exact same about a rolling 7 day total! haha. But it proves the point you made perfectly. Thanks for sharing. I guess my only true gripe is that GC is a little less intuitive/streamlined for ME to use, compared to strava. And with that i'll bring it back to the OP topic - the lack of colors exemplifies this!
