"Core muscle injury" / Sports Hernia - Surgery
Quote | Reply
I've read through all the threads on sports hernia, but "core muscle injury" is a new one for me. I guess it's wha they now call a sports hernia?

Got my diagnosis via MRI this morning. Had symptoms since March. Did PT and exercises, but those were more focused on the belief that there was just some pelvic tilt going on, not the CMI Dx. Weeks of rest (well, no running, still rode some but that didn't hurt, mostly) didn't help, especially inside adductor up into the groin which always has had some pain.

Ortho at Kerlan Jobe says if PT/rest didn't resolve in 4-6 weeks, surgery is next step. He asked "how much does it bother you?" and noted that for pros and college athletes they recommend surgery. I'm just a weekend warrior triathlete and really don't want to give that up, as the last few months have made clear, not being able to run and really train properly has had a huge detrimental effect (in addition to the quarantine issues). 53 years old, btw.

Ortho says fairly simple surgery with 6-8 weeks recovery back to activity.

So, anyone been able to successfully resolve with PT? Chose surgery? Recovered?

In short, yes I successfully resolved with PT...and am now recovered. I was 49 at the time.

Here's my story...along with the exercises (a few posts further down) that I was prescribed:

Note, it took considerably longer than 6-8 weeks. IE, more like a year.

After 3 months, I was still having issues and was still unable to run. I quit paying money for the PT, but kept up the routine for another 3 months. At 4 months I started running like 5 minutes a day, increasing that 2-5 minutes a week as tolerated. By the 6 month mark, I was back to running normally...with only occasional mild discomfort. 2 years out, and I rarely (but occasionally) can tell its still barely there.

I had left and right side inguinal repairs, about 18 months apart 4-5 years ago, I was 45 I think with the left side popped and 46 for the right side. Recovery was about 4-6 weeks by the time I was back to full activity. The left side still gives me some wicked nerve pain every once and a while but then goes away just as sudden as it appears.

Overall, post-surgery was only bad the first 2-3 days, after that I got along pretty good without any of the hard stuff they prescribed. If your activity level drops off for the Fall/Winter months, maybe hold out until then.

Inguinal hernia and sports hernia are two completely different things. "Sports Hernia" is really a misnomer for a collection of pelvic floor muscle tears and/or strains----more accurately called "Athletic Pubalgia" and a few other closely related injuries.

I had sports hernia surgery and was racing within about 6 weeks. Best choice I ever made. Bilateral tears. Much better success rate and quicker recovery than PT. I was lucky enough to have Dr. Meyers in Philly. I did get a ventral hernia a few years later where I was cut open for the sports hernia, but still worth. Like someone else said though, a sports hernia has nothing to do with a regular hernia.

Right, not a "hernia." And not even a "sports hernia" anymore since they have a specific etiology

And thanks.

Here is a post from Jocelyn M (top 10 pro at Kona) on her experience. Surgery to racing in a couple of months.
