Reading through TimeIsUp's thread on song lyrics brought so many great lines to mind. I've become fascinated in the last few years with the poetry of song writing. The ability to capture an idea or emotion with a simple turn of a phrase is a talent I can't begin to grasp. So what are some of your favorite lines? Some that come to mind:

"Maybe time running out is a gift" -Jason Isbel

"Somebody told me that music with guitars was going out of fashion and I had to laugh, this shit wasn't fashionable when I fell in love, if hipsters move on, why should I give a F*ck!" -Frank Turner

"When my mind was turning loose and all my thoughts were turning black, you shined a light on me and I intend to pay you back" - Avett Brothers

"If I were from the greatest generation I'd be pissed, looking at all that we've built slipping back into this, I'd be screaming at my grandkids, 'We Already Did This!'- Frank Turner

"you just became something like some smoke that I tried too hard to hold"- Brian Fallon

I’d tell all my friends but they’d never believe me. They’d think that I had finally lost it completely. I’d show them the stars and the meaning of life. They’d shut me away, but I’d be alright.”

haha..don't laugh when I post lyrics now! If a song really speaks to me I usually have to look up the lyrics. This is the most recent from mid-November'ish. Reverie from Above and Beyond, lyrics and vocals by Zoe Johnston.

you used to bring the smell of rain into my bed
and lie so close to me you could be inside my head
............
you live in me, my reverie
don't ever leave me

Barry Manilow and Mandy (because they're so cheesy but it rhymes).

The Replacements have always been one of my all-time favorite bands, in part because Paul Westerberg is such a great writer:

I can't live without your touch
I could die within your reach

Another one on a similar vein from Tom Petty's "Rebels":

I never could have dreamed that her heart was so wicked
But I keep coming back cuz it's so hard to kick it

Staying with some classics (more than a line)

Well, your faith was strong but you needed proof
You saw her bathing on the roof
Her beauty and the moonlight overthrew ya
She tied you to the kitchen chair
She broke your throne and she cut your hair
And from your lips, she drew the Hallelujah

And in the streets the children screamed
The lovers cried and the poets dreamed
But not a word was spoken
The church bells all were broken
And the three men I admire most
The Father Son and Holy Ghost
They caught the last train for the coast
The day the music died

And then there is Bob Dylan...

Been listening to a little more Rush this past week ... Much of what Neil Peart wrote starting at about Permanent Waves (1979, IIRC) is very reflective of society and technology today and is great listening on multiple levels, both for the music and the words. If you don't like Geddy Lee's voice then just find the lyric sheets...

So damn hard to narrow down, but a few have been in my head lately...

”I've got a couple more years on you, baby, that's all.
I've had more chances to fly and more places to fall.
And it ain't that I'm wiser,
It's only that I've spent more time with my back to the wall.
And I've picked up a couple more years on you, baby.. that's all.

I've walked a couple more roads than you, baby, that's all.
And I'm tired of runnin' while you're only learning to crawl.
And you're headin somewhere,
But I've been to somewhere, and found it was nowhere at all.
And I've picked up a couple of years on you baby, that's all.“
- Willie Nelson, written by Shel Silverstein

“Keep in mind that a man's just as good as his word
It takes twice as long to build bridges you've burned
And there's hurt you can cause time alone cannot heal
Keep your nose on the grindstone and out of the pills”

Tyler Childers, Nose on the Grindstone

And so, so many others.

I do have an all time favorite, though. No song expresses a very specific feeling for me like Wish List.

“I wish I was a neutron bomb for once I could go off
I wish I was a sacrifice but somehow still lived on
I wish I was a sentimental ornament you hung on
The Christmas tree I wish I was the star that went on top
I wish I was the evidence I wish I was the grounds
For fifty million hands upraised and open toward the sky

I wish I was a sailor with someone who waited for me
I wish I was as fortunate as fortunate as me
I wish I was a messenger and all the news was good
I wish I was the full moon shining off a Camaro's hood

I wish I was an alien at home behind the sun
I wish I was the souvenir you kept your house key on
I wish I was the pedal brake that you depended on
I wish I was the verb 'to trust' and never let you down”

edit to add- Oops, my bad, just listened, that's not at then end of Montana as I thought. Had to look it up - Camarillo Brillo. Thanks for that one. Been a while.

I'm not sure if you we're including rap lyrics, but I've always been impressed with Eminem's rhyming. This set has the last three syllables of each phrase rhyme plus the first syllable of the following phrase:

Snap back to reality, oh there goes gravity
Oh, there goes Rabbit, he choked
He's so mad, but he won't give up that easy? No
He won't have it, he knows his whole back city's ropes
It don't matter, he's dope, he knows that, but he's broke
He's so stacked that he knows, when he goes back to his mobile home, that's when its
Back to the lab again yo, this whole rhapsody
He better go capture this moment and hope it don't pass him

There are a few great videos on YouTube that break down the structure of rhymes and bars. I wonder if they sit down and write out that structure, or just make up rhymes in their head that flow that way. Biggie was pretty impressive at that as well. Some rappers like Mos Def and other less well-known guys are phenomenal at this.

Leaving Lepidoptera... Please don't touch the display, little boy. Oh-ho-ho... cute. Moving to the next aisle, we have Arachnida, the spiders, our finest collection. This friendly, little fellow is the Heptithilidae, unfortunately harmless. Next to him... the nasty Lycosa Raptoria. His tiny fangs cause creeping ulcerations of the skin. And here... my prize, The Black Widow. Isn't she lovely? And so deadly. Her kiss is fifteen times as poisonous as that of the rattlesnake. You see, her venom is highly neuro-toxic. Which is to say that it attacks the central nervous system; causing intense pain, profuse sweating, difficulty in breathing, loss of conciousness, violent convulsions, and, finally... uh, death. You know, what I think I love the most about her is her in-born need to dominate, posess. In fact, immediately after the consummation of her marriage to the smaller and weaker male of the specie, she kills and eats him. Oo-hoo, she is delicious! (And I hope he was.) If I may put forward a slice of personal phylosophy, I feel that Man has ruled this world as a stumbling, demented child-king long enough! And as his empire crumbles, my precious Black Widow shall rise as his most fitting successor!

Going with the stanza method instead of one line-

My old man
I hope he's proud of who I am
I'm trying to fill the boot of my old man”

This has been the most meaningful to me over time.

No fight left or so it seems
I am a man whose dreams have all deserted
I've changed my name, I've changed my face
But no one wants you when you lose
Don't give up
'Cause you have friends
Don't give up
You're not beaten yet
Don't give up
I know you can make it good

I'm beginning to think that we are much more fucked than I thought.

Lying to my face again
Suicidal imbecile
You're pounding on a fault line
What'll it take to get it through to you precious
Over this , why do you wanna
Throw it away like this
Such a mess, over this, over this

If you choose to pull the trigger, should your drama prove sincere,
Do it somewhere far away from here

A cop love song
I left your house this morning
'Bout a quarter after nine
Coulda been the Willie Nelson
Coulda been the wine
When I left your house this morning
It was a little after nine
It was in Bobcaygeon, I saw the constellations
Reveal themselves, one star at time
Drove back to town this morning
With working on my mind
I thought of maybe quittin'
Thought of leavin' it behind
Went back to bed this morning
And as I'm pullin' down the blind
Yeah, the sky was dull and hypothetical
And fallin' one cloud at a time
That night in Toronto
With its checkerboard floors
Riding on horseback
And keeping order restored
'Til The Men They Couldn't Hang
Stepped to the mic and sang
And their voices rang with that Aryan twang.

This is my favorite verse from a song "Movimientos" by Jorge Drexler.

I will let you guys look up the translation for most of the verse.
But here the very last bit in English:

We were the drop of water in the meteorite
We crossed galaxies, millennia of time and space
We sought oxygen
We found dreams

Atravesamos desiertos, glaciares, continentes
El mundo entero de extremo a extremo
Empecinados, supervivientes

I've seen some of those. I've probably seen the one you posted and will check it out.

I'm betting it depends on the writer. Mozart and Bethoven were opposites. It just flowed out of Mozart, while Bethoven was meticulous. I have a friends who used to write raps and, again, it just flowed out. I'm more meticulous (as is my friend Leslie).

I can't remember if I wrote this in the other thread, but there's often a balance that has to be struck. The more simple and symmetrical a song is, the catchier it is, but the less interesting it is. There's a phrase I heard in jazz that in order to play "outside" you have to establish what it is outside of. "Outside" means playing deliberately outside of the key and song structure, but if that's all you do, you just sound like someone who doesn't know what he's doing.

I like this from Scenario:

Scenarios, radios, rates more than four
Scores for the smores that smother dance floors
Now I go for mine, shades of sea shore
Ship-shape plush Grape Apes to play tapes
Papes make drakes baked for the wakes
Of an L-AH, an E-ADER, simply just a leader
Bass innerspace means peace see ya later

The first few and last few lines are pretty basic, but in the middle he raps straight quarter notes and rhymed 10 of the 15 syllables. That only stands out because of the standard structure set up before and after.

Likewise, Eminem could have probably made the whole first verse of Lose Yourself have that repeated rhyme structure that i pointed out earlier, but it would get boring after a while.

Side note to all of this, my brother (professional trombone player and high school band and theater director) has a theory about the evolution of genres music, and how over time they get more and more complicated such that it ends up playing more toward the musicians and hardcore fans and less to mainstream audiences (swing to bebop for example).

I'm not sure I agree with this as rap, in particular, has gotten horrible formulaic and dumbed down, at least in the mainstream. But what do I know? I'll admit this is just a lot of un-worked out conjecture on my part. The point is, ultimately the more and more complicated the rhyme schemes get, the harder mainstream audiences can appreciate it. Hmmmmm.......maybe there's a divide right now? Intelligent rap for the rap fans, and formulaic mumble rap for the mainstream audiences?

Way too many CDs in my collection, but here are some favorite lines.

From 2004, this seems prophetic.
"You want to save the world with your dirty tone
You want to heal their pain with a fine wound of your own
You want to save the world with your dirty tone
You want to wield the power in your pretty little gun"

"...we walked on water, we were perfect..."

"I could die here tonight
Your beautiful words in my soul
I could die here tonight
And you wouldn't even notice
You wouldn't even protest here
We could lie here together
Pulling the stars from the sky
Maybe things will get better
Maybe not, I don't know why
Maybe not, I don't know
Do you feel scared like I do
Do you feel lower than angels
Do you feel scared like I do
Do you feel love so high?"

"That booklet I thought I'd write
Our long weekend (in Newport) last June
Chateau-sur-Mer, the ocean air
Marble House, The Breakers, and you

Just out of curiosity, I pulled up the lyrics to the current Billboard #1 song. It turns out to be something called, The Box, pasted below for your enjoyment. I'll just say have have trouble relating to it. Now if you'll excuse me, I have to get these damn kids of my lawn.

Pullin' out the coupe out the 'lot
Told 'em "Fuck 12, fuck SWAT"
Bustin' out the bells out the box
I just hit a lick with the box
Had to put the stick in a box, mm
Pour up the whole damn seal, I'ma get lazy
I got the mojo-deals, we been trappin' like the '80's
She sell that nigga soul, gotta cashout
Told 'em wipe a nigga nose, say slatt, slatt
I won't never sell my soul, and I can back that
And I really wanna know, where you at, at?
I was setback, where the stash at?
Cruise the city in a bulletproof Cadillac (Skrrt)
'Cause I know these niggas after where the bag at
Gotta move smarter, gotta move harder
Niggas tryna get me for my water
I live lay his ass down on my son or my daughter
I had the Draco with me, Dwayne Carter
'Lotta niggas out here playin', I ball 'em
I done out my whole arm in the rim, Vince Carter
And know I probably get a key for the quarter
Shawty been in the scene, double C's, I bought 'em
Got a bitch that's looking like Aaliyah, she a model
I got the Pink Slip, all my whips is key-less
Call them I'm 'bout to get the key to the city
Patek like the sea
Pullin' out the coupe out the 'lot
Told 'em "Fuck 12, fuck SWAT"
Bustin' out the bells out the box
I just hit a lick with the box
Had to put the stick in a box, mm
Pour up the whole damn seal, I'ma get lazy

Ha-ha-ha, I been movin' them out'
It's dealin' with me, then he got the blues in the pouch
Took her to the forrest, put wood in her mouth
Bitch don't wear no shoes in my house
The private, I'm flyin' in, I never wanna fly again
I take my chances in traffic
She suckin' on dick no hands with it
I just made the Rollie plane like a landing-strip
I'm a 2020 president candidate
I done put a hunnid bands on Zimmerman shit
I been movin' real gangsta', so that's why she pick a cryp
Shawty call me Crisco, 'cause I pop my shit
Got it out the mud, there's nothin' you can tell me, yeah
When I had the drugs, I was street-wealthy
Pullin' out the coupe out the 'lot
Told 'em "Fuck 12, fuck SWAT"

maybe there's a divide right now? Intelligent rap for the rap fans, and formulaic mumble rap for the mainstream audiences?

Absolutely true. It's why mumble rap gets slammed so hard by old school rappers who understand the history and evolution of hip hop and how rare it is to see artists combine message and delivery in a way that both satisfies those afficionados and appeals to young audiences who are essentially there for the beats and image.

As Q-tip (one of the greatest IMO) said way back then, rap is not pop if you call it that then stop.

Busta is a fucking magician.

That's awesome!

Not sure if its appropriate for this thread, or the dumpster fire I started in the other thread, or its own thread, but there's a really good Malcolm Gladwell podcast out there where he talks rap and country lyrics and compares them to rock lyrics.

It's too much to summarize here, but in a nutshell he talks about sad songs (I'll throw in angry) versus happy songs, and the locations that the artists grew up in. Rock throws a big net and captures a large audience, so the lyrics are somewhat generic and anthemic, and are typically not sad. Country and Rap (separately) cater to more homogeneous demographics so they can get very specific with their lyrics, which makes them more powerful.

The video you showed above tells a very specific story and, if you are capable, you can feel the emotion through his lyrics. Compare that to, say, Tuti Fruiti, or Ain't Nothin' but a Hound Dog.

Here's a transcript. You can probably find the actual podcast somewhere:

That's an astute observation about the specificity of country and rap, relative to pop and rock. I'd never thought of it that way.

That freestyle I posted is just so impressive, and speaks to all the points made above. You need to hear it a few times to really appreciate everything that's happening. It's highly specific, relevant social commentary, technically masterful, clever and versatile (using the same word as the rhyme but applying all of it's meanings [charging to mean giving energy, prosecuting a crime, and rushing to attack], not sure that I've seen that done three ways before), and generally just great story telling that hits all the pertinent points. Not to mention the memorization of the lines, in order, and the delivery. It's probably the most impressive rap performance I've ever seen, all things considered.

Thanks for the pod link, I'll check that out on my drive home tonight.

Make me want to holler
The way they do my life
This ain't livin', This ain't livin'
No, no baby, this ain't livin'
No, no, no
Inflation no chance
To increase finance
Bills pile up sky high
Send that boy off to die

Make me want to holler
The way they do my life
Make me want to holler
The way they do my life

Hang ups, let downs
Bad breaks, set backs
Natural fact is
I can't pay my taxes
Oh, make me want to holler
And throw up both my hands
Yea, it makes me want to holler
And throw up both my hands
Crime is increasing
Trigger happy policing
Panic is spreading

Tin soldiers and Nixon's coming
We're finally on our own
This summer I hear the drumming
Four dead in Ohio

Gotta get down to it
Soldiers are gunning us down
Should have been done long ago
What if you knew her and
Found her dead on the ground
How can you run when you know

Gotta get down to it
Soldiers are gunning us down
Should have been done long ago
What if you knew her and
Found her dead on the ground
How can you run when you know

Tin soldiers and Nixon's coming
We're finally on our own

Kinda crazy to think these two songs were recorded within a year of each other. Totally different sounds, totally different genres, but the dame instability bloomed both.

Anyone who can successfully integrate the word "parthenogenesis" into a catchy song is a genius in my book:

In a jungle of the senses
Tinkerbell and Jack the ripper
Love has no meaning, not where they come from
But we know pleasure is not that simple
Very little fruit is forbidden
Sometimes we wobble, sometimes we're strong
But you know evil is an exact science
Being carefully correctly wrong

Priests and cannibals, prehistoric animals
Everybody happy as the dead come home
Big black nemesis, parthenogenesis
No one move a muscle as the dead come home

We feel like Greeks, we feel like Romans
Centaurs and monkeys just cluster round us
We drink elixirs that we refine
From the juices of the dying
We are no monsters, we're moral people
And yet we have the strength to do this
This is the splendor of our achievement
Call in the air strike with a poison kiss

Priests and cannibals, prehistoric animals
Everybody happy as the dead come home
Big black nemesis, parthenogenesis
No one move a muscle as the dead come home
Priests and cannibals, prehistoric animals
Everybody happy as the dead come home
Big black nemesis, parthenogenesis
No one move a muscle as the dead come home

How bad it gets, you can't imagine
The burning wax, the breath of reptiles
God is not mocked, he owns our business
Karma could take us at any moment
Cover him up, I think we're finished
You know it's never been so exotic
But I don't know, my dreams are visions
We could still end up with the great big fishes

Priests and cannibals, prehistoric animals
Everybody happy as the dead come home
Big black nemesis, parthenogenesis
No one move a muscle as the dead come home

Suppose you started playing the 1988 song by The Proclaimers, I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles). That song is about 131.9 beats per minute, so imagine that with every beat of the song, you move forward more than two miles.

In the time it took to sing the first line of the chorus, you could walk from the Statue of Liberty all the way to the Bronx:

It would take you about two lines of the chorus (16 beats of the song) to cross the English Channel between London and France.
The song's length leads to an odd coincidence. The interval between the start and the end of I'm Gonna Be is 3 minutes and 30 seconds,[10] and the ISS is moving is 7.66 km/s.

This means that if an astronaut on the ISS listens to I'm Gonna Be, in the time between the first beat of the song and the final lines ...

... they will have traveled just about exactly 1,000 miles.

Some girls are sadistic, materialistic,
Lookin' for a man makes them opportunistic,
They're lyin' on the beach perpetratin' a tan,
So that a brother with money can be their man.
So on the beach you're strollin, real high rollin',
Everything you have is yours and not stolen.
A girl runs up with somethin' to prove,
So don't just stand there, bust a move.

Not the deepest meaning, but the lyrics and rhymes in this song always amused me. Flea's bass guitar contributes to the song, too.
