Question about ITU World Championship Long Distance 2020
Quote | Reply
As per my understanding, the qualifying for the 2020 ITU WC Long Distance, will be again in Miami, FL with 70.3 distance (1.2 / 56 / 13.1).

and 2020, the ITU LD WC will be in Almere, Holand with the IM Distance (2.4 / 112 / 26.2), is that correct ??

Qualify: 70.3 distance
ITU WC: IM Distance ??

Is that correct or was my misunderstanding ?

thanks

The distance is usually 3/4 of IM distance.

3k swim
120k bike
30k run

I just did the ITU LC WC race in Spain. Swim was shortened this year due to frigid water (only 1.5k) but that is not normal.

I would assume everything right now on their website will be preliminary, as they work with the ITU around getting courses approved. That said, given their history of hosting a full distance event, it wouldn't shock me if the final distance was a full, but again, I would assume that's TBD... Historically, recently LD worlds have been over roughly a 3/4 IM type distance, but that doesn't prevent them from going longer in Almere.

Challenge has a history of working closely with the ETU (and by default the ITU) and having some of their events given European Triathlon Championship status.Challenge Almere-Amsterdan is the ETU Long Distance Championship for 2019 so I figure they have just stepped up for next year to host the ITU Worlds.

ITU LD Worlds are typically “Triple Olympic” distance. The swim ends up being shortened to 4K (I suppose because they want people to sign-up), with 120K bike and 30K run. The Olympic distance requires equal strengths in all three disciplines. If the ITU worlds became IM distances, I’ve got plenty of great races still on my bucket list. For now, ITU Australia should include some strong swimmers in 2021 ;-)

ITU LD distances were originally established from the Nice, France Triathlon. 4K Swim - 120K Bike and 30 K Run. ITU over the years shortened the swim but tries hard to keep the Bike and run distances the same.

It appears the IM distance on next years race are preliminary and many NGBs are in touch with ITU to ensure the distances are kept as original as possible.

Hope this helps

I hope they shorten it. I qualified for 2019 and couldn’t take the spot for a variety of reasons. If I qualify again (I’m working hard but not counting my chickens), I’d love to go but a shorter-than-full distance is far more appealing to me. I also saw that it’s currently described as a full and that didn’t thrill me.

I feel pretty confident that it will be the original distances -- hang in there.

I thought similarly, but the IM distance for 2020 ITU Long Course Triathlon WC is confirmed. This will be only the second time the ITU has contested the long course WC over a full distance triathlon. And yes, the qualifier remains the half distance at Miami Man.

Yep just got that info - a real shame as the Original Nice distances were fun and challenging - IM distance is IM distance..... and only a half to qualify — scratching my head...

It's not half as stupid as the USAT short course qualifier I used for Powerman Zofingen long course! :)

Just seeing that a couple people saw this before I did, but here's the full release (that the ITU long course won't be triple-Olympic or anything in that range). I'll be interested to see what this does to participation numbers.

The ITU Executive Board has approved that the ITU Long Distance World Championships 2020, to be held during the Multisport World Championships in Almere, will be held over the classic long distance 3,8km swim, 180km cycle and 42,2km run.

ITU is doing an exception accepting this distance, instead of the regular ITU distance for the Long Distance World Championships used in the last three editions of the Multisport World Championships, but the technical difficulties in the circuit in Almere made this the only possible option.

The ITU Sports and Operations team has reviewed on-site all the possible courses to guarantee a fair and safe competition venue for the race, and has decided to move on to the 3,8km-180km-42,2km distance, even though the next edition in 2021 will go back to the ITU long distance: 3km swim, 120km cycle and 30km run.

The ITU Long Distance World Championship is the final event in a week of ITU World Championship Multisports, taking place between September 4 and 13, 2020 in Almere-Amsterdam, the Netherlands. It will be the fourth edition of this engaging and successful format, that has been organized in Penticton (Canada); Fyn (Denmark) and Pontevedra (Spain) the years before, and will move to Townville, Australia, in 2021.
