Question for the older guys - morning constitutional
Quote | Reply
I'm really getting old if this is the conversation I'm starting. I'm curious if anyone else has had changes to their morning constitutional as they got older. I'm 57 and up until the last year - I had one BM in the morning which cleared me out. Now, it takes 2-3, sometimes 4.

My diet hasn't really changed, nor has my activity level. I drink plenty of water, though I could probably drink more.

Is that normal?

I have one in the morning. Usually one in the afternoon and sometimes one in the evening. I feel like I used to only go once a day.

I am only 43 but I feel like I am 57.

How does Danny Hart sit down with balls that big?

Disclaimer: I don't want to scare you with a worst case scenario, and I'm not a physician (I am a doctor though, and I do work in a gastroenterology department :-) ). There are certainly a myriad of possible reasons, many or most of them probably harmless (including the possibility that it's indeed just your age). I don't know if you had the colon cancer screening by colonoscopy done that is recommended for everybody over the age of 55. If yes, disregard the following.

That said, here's my very recent n=1: I'm 50 now, and I also had some creeping changes to my usual routine and my, let's say, general digestive well-being. I finally had a colonoscopy done, and they found and removed a large polyp from my colon. The pathological analysis revealed that it was well on its way to invasive cancer, but luckily was still completely contained. Two pieces of good news in one for me: my digestive problems were instantly relieved (I was back to what I remembered as being normal within one day), and I escaped colon cancer at pretty much the last minute. Had I waited for the recommended age of 55, I would most probably have been looking at full-blown cancer by that time.

TL;DR: If you've never had a colonoscopy done, schedule one. It's recommended for your age anyway, and can identify (and ideally also correct) a number of different problems.

ETA: Fuck cancer!

I'm glad they caught yours in time. That's scary.

I had a colonoscopy scheduled a couple of years ago but I got called out of town for work for a couple of months and had to cancel. I think I'll ask my Dr. to schedule one for me. Better be safe than sorry.

Exactly! I was always in favor of colon cancer screening, but since that incident, I'm really preaching the gospel :-)
It's just tragic when people get colon cancer when it's so easy to literally nip it in the bud in so many cases.

I was never much of a coffee drinker but found in the last couple of years a cup in the morning really gets everything moving. Decaff doesn't count btw.

I stopped drinking soda and went to coffee, I agree, it does get stuff moving. Also helps to keep the weight in check.
