Met Robert Redford and Diana Ross in the 80s. (Both much more wrinkly in person than on screen.)
Helped teach Brooke Shields to scuba dive for a movie. (Not wrinkly at all)
Drank in the same pub as a few England rugby players in the 90s (Will Carling et al) and shared a few beers with them.

Of the top of my head, Denny Hastert when he was SOTH. One of my best friends was in Congress for a good while so I've met a lot of national politicians. I probably talked to him solo for 15 minutes and walked away thinking "I can't believe that guy is SOTH, he seems like a real dumbass." Turns out I was pretty correct.

I had lunch dinner with Phil Knight. had a chance to date Jamie Lee Curtis and Mckenzie Phillips once. Hung out with Bruce Dern for a couple weeks. Was friends with Eric Heiden superficially. Had meals with Diana Nyaid, Marty Liquori, Greg Myer, Arthur Ash. Got in trouble once when Pam Anderson hit on me in front of my girlfriend. Met all the early ladies of Baywatch, had many lunches with them over many years, The Hoff too.
Most recently had a couple hour surf session with Tom Carroll. Of course I'm discounting all the famous people you all know from the history of the sport, just assume I met and befriended most of them.
There are a bunch more, but my memory has slipped a bit, would need some old friends and a few barrels of really good beer to bring back a lot of those memories...Fun thread...

Also, my cousin used to live next door to George Plimpton
His step-dad had some connections in the music business at the time [that's how we got into CBGB although we were totally underage], and had people coming & going through the apartment. In fact, he produced the album Cher made during her time with Gene Simmons, and did some work with Bruce Johnston of The Beach Boys

Wife has much more famous but most of those stories don't get told. Got asked out by Jim Jackson in college and Barry Larkin asked her to dinner, she had no idea who Larkin was until I showed her.
I have a good infamous one. Played a lot of pool with John Hawkins of the Just Sweats murder infamy.

I actually met Heather Locklear years ago at a takeout restaurant in Thousand Oaks where she lives (I lived there for 11 yrs). I walked in and was standing in line directly behind her and she glanced back at me when I walked in. I said, "Oh, hi Heather!"....she looked back at me trying to recall if she knew me, so I whispered, "hey, I know you don't know me but I wanted everyone here to think you do - my 15 mins of fame and all..." then she turned around and gave me a big hug and pretended like we were lifelong friends. Pretty funny, she was really cool.
Now's she's just batshit crazy, but that's another story I suppose.
I sat on directly next to Maxine Waters on a flight from LAX to DC a few years ago. Her team took up most of the first class cabin. I immediately disliked her, she treated her staff and the flight crew horribly. Never stopped talking and was disrespectful. She kept talking to me and I finally just ignored her completely. Can't say she's 'famous' but she is well known.

Discounting people that work within my branch of government who are news famous (like FBI Directors and Attorney Generals and such) or that I've crossed paths with for work stuff.
I guess I'd say:
Gwen Stefani - Met her at an after party after a No Doubt show. I think they were crashing at a friend of mines house because they were a dirt poor band playing shitty clubs. This was long before they were a famous band and a year or so before their first record came out. My guess is sometime in 1991. In full disclosure, I did not actually attend the concert. I simply went to the party for beer and girls. Saw Gwen immediately upon getting there and made a beeline straight for her. Drop dead gorgeous and super cool. I'm sure I spent plenty of time hitting on her to no avail. Years later I was watching MTV and that Just A Girl video came on and I was like, "Hey, I hit on that girl at a party once." I was now married and my wife was like, "Yeah, sure you did." Wife still doesn't believe me. Gwen's loss!
Axl Rose - Snuck backstage at a Tom Petty concert back in college. Venue was an outdoor arena. Axl was back there standing by himself waiting for his limo. My friends and I chatted with him for about 15 minutes. He was actually very nice. Dressed in the same exact outfit he wore in the Paradise City video.
Alan Alda - Sat next to him on a plane from Houston to Boston. I was like, "Hey, that guy looks like Alan Alda." Because it was.
Jennifer Carpenter - Sat next to her on a plane from Houston to Las Vegas. The "what are the chances" thing was I actually had a DVD of season one of Dexter that I was going to watch on my laptop but just couldn't do it with one of the stars of the show sitting right next to me.
I've met various other alt-rock or punk band members that aren't necessarily super famous like Henry Rollins, Paul Westerberg, Bob Mould, and J Mascis.

Had about a 30-45 minute conversation with Stephen Hawking about dinosaurs. He was at the museum where my wife works on the '98 Superbowl Sunday and we happened to be there and had questions. Being a bit of a dino geek at the time, I and another guy who was a geologist got to have a good long talk with him and answered his questions as best we could. To say I was on cloud 9 is an understatement.

Definitely, house is for sale right now, but of course there is a huge downturn in Orange County right now, bad luck. The good news is I got equity from the past couple years, so still above where I bought. Will probably go back to Valyermo for a bit, but plan is to head back to La Quinta, to be near the inlaws. My wife mother got a bad diagnosis of Parkinsons, so we are going to get the kids and her close for these next years. Build some lasting memories while it is still possible.
But looking there, and the fact that I have a guy we ride with up there on MTB that builds houses, it will be cheaper for me to build than buy in some gated, high HOA community. So for that down time, it is off to the mountains, clean air, and buses that actually pick my kids up and take them to school, like the old days!!!
Cool story about Heather, and I have heard she jumped the shark awhile back. And I dont know or have ever met Maxinne, but I hate her, and despise that she represents much of what I vote for...

He hauls off and whacks one – big hitter, the Lama – long, into a ten-thousand foot crevasse, right at the base of this glacier. Do you know what the Lama says? Gunga galunga… gunga, gunga lagunga. So we finish the eighteenth and he’s gonna stiff me. And I say, “Hey, Lama, hey, how about a little something, you know, for the effort, you know.” And he says, “Oh, uh, there won’t be any money, but when you die, on your deathbed, you will receive total consciousness.” So I got that goin’ for me, which is nice.

Literally no one...is that bad? Literally the only example I can come up with is Pat Burns (old Bruins head coach), I was a waiter for him at a small NH restaurant once, though didn't say a word to him beyond asking for his order and whatnot.
Next closest is an old security job I had at the Boston Garden; I was on the floor for Celtics games so saw a ton of NBA stars, couple of times worked the visitors locker room for Bruins games and was stationed outside Simon and Garfunkel's room and escorted them to the stage. Never interacted with any players/performers but it was pretty cool.

The funny thing about NdGT was that we had a few people call into that one and one of them had a hot mike. She said something like “he sure does like to talk a lot” and he just got a funny look on his face.

Samuel Jackson: played a round of golf at his tournament and met him at the dinner/awards ceremony and then at a club later. He was quite rude and obnoxious...had more than a few drinks in him and showing off for his posse.
Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones: my dog was friends with their dog (same groomer/pet-sitter). Met him a few times over several years and shared some small talk, also played golf in his tournament. He was always down-to-earth and really nice guy. Never met Catherine L
Pete Townsend: prepared him for a radio show to discuss The Who’s Tommy musical. Super cool guy…my one regret is that I didn’t get a picture or autograph as The Who are one of my all-time favorite bands.
David Bowie: well, didn’t really meet him but said hello to him in the Bank branch around 2000-2001. He was wearing white pants with white sport jacket and t-shirt, looked quite thin & scruffy but still oozed style - c'mon it's David Bowie!
Tom Brokaw: met him at Red Fish Grill in New Orleans. Super weird....I greeted him as he exited his limo with his wife and I think he assumed I was the official greeter from the restaurant. It was only after a few minutes that he realized I was just some chump off the street and he said "have a nice evening" and I left - very surreal. If I recall, he was in NO for the opening of the National WW2 museum.
Met several actors while working at a professional theatre….didn’t really talk to them much other than technical stuff or saying hello in the lunch room, hallways or parking lot: Colm Feore, Graham Greene, Brian Dennehy, Christopher Plummer, William Shatner.

Had a drink and a great talk about Ferrari and Formula One with former 1960's F1 world champion Ferrari driver John Surtees. Another Ferrari story - sat at a restaurant table next to world champ F1 driver Fernando Alonso when he was racing for Ferrari and didn't realize it until waiter told me.
Introduced to some guy named Dan one time. Shook hands and chatted a bit. Found out later his last name was Aykroyd.

Brooks and Dunn - Met them as a kid while they were filming a music video at the Four Aces Movie Ranch diner in Palmdale, California. They even signed my 49ers hat.
Keanu Reeves and Patrick Swayze - Met them while they were filming the final skydiving scene for Point Break. I must've been 8 or 9, because I remember asking how they were able to time travel in Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure and being mesmerized when he told me it was "magic."
I got to fly around General Petraeus and Paul Bremer in Iraq in 2003 and also met Admiral McRaven and General Mulholland when they came to Iraq in 2008 to present some awards to us SOF personnel.

I've met quite a few in the sports world due to my career. Peyton Manning, Serena Williams, Dwayne Wade, Usain Bolt, etc.
Two stand out for me...(one outside of sports)
1) Derek Jeter - I lost a 'cinnamon challenge' bet to him. I knew I couldn't do it but i figured it was worth a shot since it makes for a good story. I had to buy him a large pizza when I lost.
2) Brittany Spears - I sold her a bikini when I worked at Sports Chalet in Marina Del Rey during college. She was really pleasant. Her little sister, not as much.

This goes way back, when I published the first triathlon only newspaper, Triathlon News. I think I had just put out the 2nd issue or so, and was at Disneyland where Buster was making a personal appearance. Had a chat and got him to hold up the paper while I got a pic of him. Used that pic in the next issue, and captioned it, here is the guy that did the first triathlon. Swimming and running in the jungle, then fighting an alligator for the 3rd event!! I will have to scan that one for you all here sometime, if I can find those old issues. He died shortly after we took that pic. He was the original Tarzan, but he was more famous for being Flash Gordon and Buck Rogers..Won gold in the olympics too, 400 I think it was...

Does this count? I went to a boys hockey camp when I was about 12 or 13.
An NHL player (while we were on the ice) asked me if I was a girl. I had long hair and was small/thin.
He eventually scored over 700 NHL goals.

Rocco Mediate: As a junior, I often played golf with his father as they lived across the street. While home on leave from the Navy for a visit, his dad set up a round of golf at the club with the then 20 year old aspiring pro golfer. The boy, who grew up with a skateboard and half pipe in the vacant lot and not golf clubs, hit it pure and sweet and was well on his way.
Lonnie Bunch: I know, not famous, but he should be. He was sitting on my lunch break bench outside a fine dining establishment. He was being stood up by the Discovery channel producers for a lunch date. He declined my offer to buy him a chili cheese dog from the street vendor and we then had a lively conversation about his new facility which was currently under construction on the Mall and whether his childhood Chicago brats were superior to the local DC chili cheese smokes.
Michael Gerson: I know, not famous, but he should be. Just this last weekend he and I shared the restroom (in line for the one urinal) at the Shenandoah Nat'l. Park Wayside rest stop. He was genuinely taken aback at being recognized as well as my effusive praise of his work and my sincere gratitude as his column always lifts my spirits. We then had a discussion as to how hilly Skyline Drive must be for one on a bicycle (I was and he wasn't).

I didn’t list any triathletes or cyclists because the list would be way too long but Lance would be on my list. Even better is Fabian Cancellara. And I went to dinner with Andrea Peron. And raced on the velodrome with multiple Olympians.

Standing at the urinal in the men's room at Jones Beach between bands at the band shell. I look over and there is Dee Snyder standing at the urinal. I didn't say anything, but he said something like "you meet the biggest weirdos in this place, don't you?" I laughed and said there was no doubt about that. Then I asked him why he was here. He said he was supporting a friend's kid's band. We talked about music all the way back to the band shell.
A few years ago the bike club stopped at a deli in East Hampton and there in line in front of us was Billy Joel. He was also on a bicycle and sat with us and talked for a while. We couldn't talk him into riding out of town with us, but I think he wanted to.

Peter Reid and Dave Scott, I have pix to prove it and I am not taking this shit to the so called main forum.
Swam against Dave Scott in HS. Did some of his morning masters workouts at UCDavis and would see him all the time in the weight room at 10 PM.
I was friends with Don Favor, 1936 Olympics Hammer throw. He was still a badass at ~70 and we did a bunch of white water rafting trips in Calif and Idaho when I was about 20. He oared his own boat with just his wife as a passenger. Watched him flip on the Salmon river. I've seen lots of rafts flip, but that one is stuck in my mind because of their age.
Steve Patterson - Center for UCLA between Kareem and Walton. I think he played about 5 years in the NBA. I kind of knew him when he coached in Santa Rosa but later I spent a week with him kayaking in Mexico. Said a big mistake he made was retiring too early because he didn't realize how hard it would be to be successful after basketball. He was pretty successful though and died way too early.

Cody Risien. He's in the same industry as me and was as geeked to meet a Browns fan as I was to meet a Browns legend.
Billy Joe Tolliver. He was a douche bag who thought he charmed all the women in our office. We were going to hire him for marketing but every woman in the office nixed that.
Micheal Dell. We were at a fundraiser for a children's hospital and he introduced himself to our group. We were at adjacent tables. He was the main donor and we were the contractor building the hospital.
Elementary school was not excluded. I used to play football with Kirk Herbstreit.

I almost forgot Jerry Linenger, the NASA astronaut who was on the Russian space station Mir when it had a fire onboard years ago. He spoke at a sales conference I attended for work about 10 years ago and then stayed for the cocktail hour afterwards. He wound up staying for quite a while and several beers, talking to the group I was with and just one great story after another, while we all hung on every word. I think we were amazed by the fact that he was hanging out and pounding beers with a bunch of finance bums as much as we were amazed by his stories. I felt like Chris Farley at one point - "Remember that time you were in space? That was awesome."

While working in college at a facility that was hosting a high school graduation, I went into the men’s room before the doors opened to the public. A secret service agent gave me a quick glance before letting me in. (Pretty sure he had an Uzi under his jacket). A tall black man was at the first urinal. I went to the third one. Looked over nonchalantly and it was Jessie Jackson. He was running for president at the time and his son was graduating highschool that night.
7:00 pm on a Friday night in Chicago outside of the Thompson Center I saw several black SUVs and what liked security officers. As I got closer, saw a man looking at his reflection in the window and fixing his hair. Rod Blagojevich true to character. He caught me gazing at him, looked up and gave me a friendly wave.

In HS I went with a group to DC for some kind of leadership conference thing. We met Jesse Helms in his office. The old crazy dude was a hoot in person, actually very personable. He was chairing some kind of report release on some of the pre-Sept 11th stuff to the press and other stuff and got us nice seats. "C'mon, let's get these kids some nice seats at my meeting!". Before the meeting he told us he had a special guest coming to the report release to read/testify and he wanted us to meet him. Colin Powell.
I lost it over the years, but the report they distributed to everyone at the meeting (public/press) basically detailed issues and clues of bad stuff leading up to the terrorist folks who did 911. Kind of eerie after the fact to have heard that stuff.
Same day we very briefly met that POS John Edwards. If I had an inkling what kind of trash he was I would have scrubbed my hand after shaking his. Even then, before all the affair stuff (while his wife had cancer) he had this douche aura about him. Shoot, I felt I liked Jesse better in the moment.

I went to a Falcons/Patriots game a couple years ago and was in the owners box. Jim Carrey was there but elusive so I didn't really meet him, but Jimmy Carter and I sat next to each other for the last 5 minutes of the game when the Patriots had turned it in to a route and everyone else was gone.
Lance Armstrong did a splash and dash and I swam on his toes for 500m or so. I hit his feet a few times and thought, man I hope he doesn't try to kick me.
If JJ Watt saw me in an airport in London he would know I am the guy who is always out running in the neighborhood. But if he stopped and said hello it would be the first time he has done anything but nod.
My cousin dated Rene Zellweger in the mid 90's when she was famous-ish but before Jerry McGuire.
Derek Jeter dated my college swim coach's daughter. He came to a practice on our winter training trip and made a fool of himself trying to win her back with flowers. He got called up to the Yankees 8 months later. Whoops.
Lastly there is a comedian named Matthew Broussard who has been on Conan and Fallon, and comedy Central on various shows. He was a Houston area triathlete. He isn't quite famous yet, but I really suspect he will be.

I've never really met anyone that famous, but do have a bit of a funny story. I was a huge NBA fan in middle school. My family was in Atlanta visiting my grandfather, and we ended up going to 6 flags. My dad ended up in a snack line right behind Atlanta Hawks center John Konkak. My dad was about 6'2", and this guy was a full foot taller than him.
When he pointed it out, I said, "Are you sure?"
My dad responded, "Well, we're in Atlanta, he's over 7 feet tall, and he looks like John Konkak. I'm pretty sure its him," as if there was the off chance that there's another freakishly tall, young, athletic looking guy who looks like him and happens to be in Atlanta.

Probably 12 years ago, I met A.J. Foyt at the Kentucky Derby. I took a selfie with him and got his autograph. He asked if I wanted anything to eat, and let me graze on the buffet he had set-up in his private box. A very friendly guy.
Lifeguard: "Do you need help?" Me: "No, that's just my butterfly."

Back when they were both playing one of my friends was a big Islanders fan and I was an Eric Lindros fan. We both had Lindros jerseys. Anyway, we (in our jerseys) went to a bar to watch the Islanders play the Flyers and Carl Lindros (their father, somewhat famous at the time as he was their agent) was sitting at a table behind us. He came over and sat with us to watch the game as he was by himself and found us amusing.

I've been following this thread for a couple of days and then came across this on another website. It's a pretty fascinating research abstract on "fame". It interviews a number of famous people and gives their take on fame.
My take, not for me...

I almost met Arnold Schwartzenegger once, but the security guard hauled me away after I drop-kicked him...

Damn. That article takes all the fun out of being famous.

Met George Hincapie and Jimmie Johnson at the Assault on Mount Mitchell last year. Hincapie even gave me and a few others a tow back to the front of the peleton after stopping for a quick bottle fill over Bill's Mountain. Both were really nice, down to Earth guys who like riding bikes.

Played basketball with Mark Wahlberg and went to a cookout at Donnie Wahlberg's Moms house (he was present and Jordan Knight). It helped that my best friend in high school lived across the street from their Mom. This was back in the 90s.

Not that I ever wanted to be famous, but yeah.
