Ironman Canada coming back to Penticton?
The city of Penticton has just issued a press release that they had been in negotiations to host Ironman Canada on the last weekend of August starting in 2020! They have been in talks for several months, but had a NDA.

Dang, lots of movement for Ironman lately. I wonder if this is related to the St George Ironman rotation. Either Penticton is in the every 3 years rotation or if they have the yearly ‘Ironman Canada’ and Whistler is part of the rotation

the city is talking about a 5 year agreement for a full distance each year. So it dosnt look like part of the rotation

vote is happening tuesday night at 6pm and from what we see currently, i think it s highly likely that it will pass

I was wondering the same. Would kind of make sense, I heard ST Geroge numbers were starting to drop due to heat, Whistlers are dropping due to climbing (other factors as well) so if those are going to be looked at as the "hard races" might as well make them the NA champs and only do them every 3 years. Question is where will number 3 be??

Whistler could be converted to be a 70.3 only, while Penticton reclaims the 140.6. Just speculating...

Based on their history, they should have been able to make a knowledgeable decision about this. If IM's coming back, Penticton (and St. George) should know what they're signing up for. Fool me once and all...

Sometimes you gotta give to get. I imagine the bed and sales taxes generated by the event greatly exceed that contribution else the council would not do it.

The financials are not just as straightforward as writing a check and saying goodbye to the money. Most cities have is a resort tax on lodging which will go right back into the funds the city pulled from. If done right, the economic benefit of the race should far outweigh the cost.

The first year Ironman Canada was in Whistler they reported $17.3 million in economic benefit including $3.2 million in providence and federal taxes

Calgary blew the Olympics! Penticton can save the country! đŸ¤ªđŸ¤ªđŸ¤ª Bring back Ironman Canada to its rightful place. There will be a race, and rest assured any Ironman athlete who has ever experienced IMC in Penticton from 1 to 30 years will always and forever want it back. All the volunteers in 2012 who wanted a crack at preregistration for 2013 can now register first! Well. Immediately after me and the 30 people I know! đŸ¤ªđŸ¤ªđŸ¤ª Thank you Penticton and Thank you Ironman. Who is this JonnyO guy ever body is talking about? Sounds smart? Side note! Have a great day in St. George everyone

It was my dream to do Ironman Canada every 10 years. I did it in 2002,2012. But after the race went to Vancouver, I lost interest. I'm a local, so I guess thats why. Stoked about the possibility of doing it again in 2022!

Great news.

This has been rumored for some time.

For newer people to the sport it's worth knowing that, IMC was one of the original 4 or 5 IM races around the world started up just after Ironman Hawaii got going.

It was also the template and the model that Graham Fraser used when he launched the expansion of IM races around North America in 1999 and 2000.

The original single loop swim/bike/run courses were challenging and epic taking in the best of the Okanagan Valley and surrounding areas.

Back in the late '80's and for the next 10+ years, the very best triathletes in the world - Professionals and Age-Groupers, came to Penticton to race at IMC!

What other host IRONMAN city and race location honored all it's race winners (women & men) with prominent bronze plaques in the park that serves as the Transition Area! Not even IRONMAN Hawaii, the World Championships does that!!

It's also a place for world class wines! :-)

On a personal note it's where both my wife and I had a few of our absolute best races ever as triathletes. It's a race that I had close business ties to working in the sport for a leading brand in the business. It's where I got my start Race Announcing alongside the legendary Steve King (Thanks, Steve), and Live Stream Commentary work.

Agree. An iconic course. Highly recommended! If they need to add a 70.3 to get the numbers required to keep the full there on the original course, add a 70.3.

to get the numbers

I think for the first few years, Mark, they will not have a challenge with the numbers for the full. With nostalgia and curiosity running high, I'm predicting that the race will "sell out" at whatever number they pick for that.

. . . and yes, I hope they go with the original single loop courses!

It was also the template and the model that Graham Fraser used when he launched the expansion of IM races around North America in 1999 and 2000. (indeed, for better or for worse, in hindsight, I'd say... for better)

The original single loop swim/bike/run courses were challenging and epic taking in the best of the Okanagan Valley and surrounding areas. (great views all day regardless of the weather that mother nature threw at us). Single loop courses are a luxury most IM races can not afford, partly I suspect because of VOLUNTEERS. Penticton is the home of the original IRON-ARMY. I still see senior citizens at the Cherry Lane Mall sporting their volunteer t-shirts from the 1990s!

Back in the late '80's and for the next 10+ years, the very best triathletes in the world - Professionals and Age-Groupers, came to Penticton to race at IMC! (this used to be a regular stop for Tinley, Erin Baker won here, Thomas Helriegel, CHUCKY V!)

What other host IRONMAN city and race location honored all it's race winners (women & men) with prominent bronze plaques in the park that serves as the Transition Area! Not even IRONMAN Hawaii, the World Championships does that!! (I think there's room for a few more plaques in the park!!)

It's also a place for world class wines! :-) (now that is a compliment, coming from someone from Ontario!!)

Agreed.

For the most part now other then a few exceptions, they are a thing of the past.

The big single loop courses are considerably more work, more costly, and less engaging for spectators, sponsors and other stakeholders.

Guessing - but I can see them going to a two loop swim, hopefully keeping the bike the same (single loop) and a two loop run - more or less in town.

I did it in 2009, and absolutely LOVED it!! Great city, great course, great people, and I got to hear "Oh Canada....." at the banquet dinner. I would go back in 2020 in a second. Just please include Richter Pass and Yellow Lake on the bike course to keep it challenging. Oh, and yes the last 10 miles back to town on the massive downhill highway/interstate, where you easily hit 50mph and pass the cars. Fun times!!!!

Penticton is a great town, I enjoyed my three races there. Whistler is great as well, I would say it's better (much better) in terms of lodging availability and family fun. I'd prefer it stay in Whistler.

Yeah, it was pretty bad last August. My little girl was only about five months old last summer, we kept her inside for a solid week. Been trying to figure out how to hermetically sealed the house.

My buddy went to do one of the famous Alpine rides in Whistler, but couldn't see anything from the top.

last summer was bad anywhere in bc, alberta, wa, cal, ore, idaho. with little kids, it s difficult as they get affected. But this is a new reality we will have to deal with for many years to come. I took off in high mountain a few times with the kids and camp to escape the smoke!

whistler as much better lodging option. it s such a fun weekend there with family etc so i hope both races stay. I m always looking forward to that race and my athletes love it.

I was living in Vancouver the past few years and did the 4 hour drive or so for the Multisport world champs and Superleague, but if I was coming from further a field would look at flying into Penticton. You could also fly to Kelowna which is a bigger town pretty close by!

As a Penticton local, I rarely fly out of Penticton. Flights are usually cheaper and more direct out of Kelowna (YLW) or Vancouver. I would say I probably fly 70% from Kelowna 30% Vancouver if I had to guess. I have flown Southwest out of Spokane before, so depending on where you are connecting from that might be a good option as well. If you haven't spent much time here, the drive from Vancouver to Penticton is quite beautiful if you go through Manning Park, Coquihalla is alright but faster.

Shouldn't it be "incremental" economic benefit. I'm sure Whistler/Penticton have fairly high occupancy rates during the summer from tourism.

No kidding! You had to go through a single point of contact for all hotels. It was a five night minimum. And for the price I paid the hotel (Days Inn) was very run down and in serious need of updating. Maybe its better now. They could get away with that when the race sold out in an hour, but I'm not sure that would fly these days.

For 2017 ITU @ Penticton, my wife and I flew Southwest from Tampa to Spokane and drove the rest of the way. It was vastly cheaper than any other option and a pleasant drive. On the way back, we took the time to tour the Grand Coulee dam.

I can't comment about Penticton, but my experience in Whistler in the summer has been very reasonable. Every winter my wife and I say something like "Hey, we should do a Whistler trip". It has basically become a joke, things are booked SO far in advance and they are so expensive as to make it comical. But summer has been totally different. We've been three times in the past two summers (twice in 2017, once for course recon and once for the 70.3, once in 2018 for MTB) and it's always very easy to find a reasonably priced place. There are just so many places to stay, and I guess MTB isn't (yet) as big a draw as the snow.

Can't agree more. I've been to Penticton for the race four times (once to volunteer, thrice to race) and each time lodging was a nightmare. Once we camped outside of town, and we ended up staying in Oliver the other three years. Couldn't find a place in town, silly night minimums, jacked prices (especially considering what you got for the price). Haven't been since racing in 2011, so I hope it's better now.

Going to the south Okanogan always felt like taking a trip back in time. Little dated motors inns running at full capacity for most of the summer. It was fun, especially when staying in Oliver or Osoyoos (I did the Oliver and Osoyoos halves each time I races IMC, so it was nine trips in three years). But for the big show in Penticton lodging just felt like another obstacle.

Lake Placid is like that too. But sharing in 2017 with a couple other athletes wasn't too crazy for housing costs. LP does have that reputation to price gouge for the Ironman week.

I just quickly looked at AirB&B for Penticton and there are a few rentals. Book early is my advice. Not sure if the prices will get jacked up that week. I have a nice AirB&B condo booked for Whistler in the village that wasn't too pricey. Can't wait! :-)

Experienced this first hand at LP this year shelling out nearly $500 a night at the High Peaks resort.

Quick look at Whistler for this July and real nice hotels are sub $300 a night, which is great. Lodging in Penticton looks pretty bleak.

Whistler as so many hotels and summer is low season so they have to drop the price. Penticton as limited hotel to start with and high season so it's a very different reality. market dictate the price.

what i recommend my athletes is using Airbnb and renting condo/house as you get decent pricing and much nicer accomodation in penticton.

For those that couldn’t make it, this is the speech that JonnyO delivered to Penticton city council today.

“From the oldest of times, the city of Penticton hosted Ironman for a number of reasons. They hosted Ironman in prayer or so that their crops would be plentiful or so their hunt would be good. And they hosted Ironman to stay physically fit and show their community spirit. And they hosted Ironman to celebrate. And that, that is the Ironman that we’re talking about.

Aren’t we told in Psalm 149: ‘Praise ye the Lord. Sing unto the Lord a new song. Let them praise His name in the Ironman’?…It was King David. King David, who we read about in Samuel, and, and what did David do? What did David do? What did David do? ‘David finshed an Ironman before the 17 hour cutoff with all his might, leaping, leaping and finishing Ironman before the 17 hour cut off.’ Leaping and finishing Ironman!

Ecclesiastes assures us that there is a time to every purpose under heaven. A time to laugh and a time to weep. A time to mourn and there is a time to host an Ironman. And there was a time for this feud, but not anymore. See, this is our time to host an Ironman. It is our way of, of celebrating life. It’s the way it was in the beginning. It’s the way it’s always been. It’s the way it should be now.â€

Then JonnyO stormed out of the room. I’ve never seen anything like it. Not even in Footlose ;)

I believe that at some point in the last two year's Whistler's Summer Business, surpassed it's Winter Business.

Last year, I heard that many folks who had been to IMC in Whistler were noting a significant increase in Hotel Room prices!

Here's the other thing about Whistler after being there last year to see it first hand. No question that it's a fabulous location - stunning actually, and the event was very well organized, but I had the sense that many people in the town either had no idea about it or didn't seem to care. Whistler hosts SO MANY events now, they all start to become a blur if they are not on the level of say CrankWerx or the WorldCup Downhill, they get kind of lost in the shuffle - and that's how IMC in Whistler felt to me. I heard they had difficulty getting the volunteer numbers they needed in Whistler - due to volunteer fatigue within the Whistler community.

Contrast that with IMC in Penticton, which while it was there, really put Penticton on the map! The town, historically REALLY cared about it. In Penticton again, historically you NEVER had any issues getting volunteers.

As someone who did 18 Ironman Canada from the late 1980's to 2008 I think it would be a wonderful idea to return to Penticton, I loved going there for the race from southern CA every year it was so much fun, the town was great, the people looked after you really well, yes there was the issues of hotels etc. implementing the four or five night rule in the mid 90's. but I guess I was lucky to meet some wonderful folks that after the initial years in hotels we stayed with a couple who ran a B and B and therefore got to live the Penticton life with them for a week, then we would go off for another week after the race, exploring around BC or Alberta, such happy times. The course was one thing that attracted me being one loop swim, and bike, yes it changed over the years but it was a great course with plenty of volunteers, I was lucky enough to qualify quite a few times for Hawaii there and as much I loved that race for different reasons it was hard to beat Penticton. I just wish I would be able to go back and race there if it returns.

I was going to ask the same question. I hope they at least keep the 70.3 in Whistler. We are heading there in July for the full (me) and the half (my husband). Glad I signed up for Whistler this year. That being said I think we would sign up for Penticton in the future. I love races steeped in history and love that the whole town is excited to host the athletes.

Ironman staff was in town yesturday to present the negotiated contract to the city with details of what will happen. The city voted on the go ahead to finalize the negotiation. So it s a done deal. Penticton will be the only Ironman in western canada and Ironman will keep the old classic one loop bike course. They will also keep the old tradition of the race with banquet, etc. The race is In August 2020 for 5 year contract. Ironman want to sign contract now as it s quick turnaround.

The city is very excited to get te race back and community support is very high currently

Any idea what that course would look like elevation wise on the bike/run based on the previous course? I did St. George this year and it was fun but definitely challenging. I'm ready for something a little flatter!

I think the classic course is about 1200-1300m (4000 ft?) with 2 long climbs (6 and 10 miles long). So, not flat but a lot flatter than the Whistler course(s); Last year, IMC bike it was about 9500 ft.

Not sure what the run will end up looking like.

Nice! I don't mind a hilly bike but getting off that and then heading uphill on the run hits hard. I should probably up my training though ha!

Personally I am bummed about the full leaving Whistler (hopefully the half remains) especially as this year's bike course looks to be fixed - you can thank/blame Pemberton for the last couple of years.

As my first full, I feel that Penticton is a special course: exciting/chaotic mass start, although these days with the swim initiative I imagine they'll do a rolling start, fantastic single loop bike course and a great run, unless you're out there alone after dark. In Penticton you KNOW Ironman is in town whereas in Whistler it just fits in with everything else going on. However availability and unbelievable price gouging for truly miserable (read: sh!thole) accommodations is a serious turnoff as is the late August date.

In truth I'll probably sign up for it again eventually but would take a rotating Whistler over that. Full disclosure: I have a place in Whistler so there's a major convenience factor at play here too.

I'm also hoping that Whistler keeps the half. That could solve some of the issues with the post-Pemberton course, enabling a single loop and fully opening the roads by noon. I am much more likely to sign up for another race in Whistler vs. Pemberton just due to the additional things for the family to do (not to mention differences in accommodation quality/cost and travel time).

Yeah, it's not terrible. I did it two of the three times I raced there, largely due to the lack of options in Penticton.

It was nice because Oliver has good places to swim/bike/run, and also grocery, places to eat, etc. So everything on those fronts is covered. Driving back and forth to Penticton did get tiring, bike check, registration, etc. Also race morning I had to leave pretty early, but I was up anyway, so that wasn't really an issue.

If you're going to do it, I would just say plan your trips into Penticton well, make sure you get everything done, know how long it will take, and then just sit back and relax.

It s impossible to please everyone. I love whistler and hope they keep a 70.3. But Penticton is a iconic course that was selling out in hours until it s demise in 2012. Imc is going back where it was born and in my completely subjective opinion, the best course in the world.

Penticton is everything but a flat course. It s not a easy ride and those 30-50min climb sure can break groups apart.

But as I said, it s impossible to please everyone

One question, best in the world? Have you done the European IMs or the Asian/S. Pacific IMs?

It's a pretty nice course, but always disappointed me that because of logistics and course difficulty it couldn't use some of the minor roads.
I'd love to see it go up Green Lake Rd, Willowbrook to Fairview, or maybe down to Oliver and over to Black Sage.
Also, Twin Lakes to White lake Rd on the last portion
That would push the elevation gain well north of 2100m. FUN!

i have no clue how it will turnout. Only time will tell. But whistler started at 2600 participant in 2012 and was down to about 1100 last year. And the city wasnt overly excited about the event on a logistic and closing highway standpoint. So WTC had to do something.

I been in the sport of triathlon for 20+ years....race professionally on almost all continent and/or been involved with many races as working force etc... i do have a idea of the races around.... lots of great races and as i said, not one single races please everyone. I love whistler, go every single year to the race and hope it goes on... but people didnt want to register for the full anymore.... or at least not in big numbers.

I side from all the other stuff.

Why Ironman (full) is better in Penticton then Whistler. For Local triathletes West coast to Calgary. You get the best Training prep for the race in that city.

Late August means you can go and ride the course and train in Penticton a lot during July and august. And while you are there do another local race like the peach, apple, etc.

You can start your training season a bit late and enjoy better weather and more time to travel and do other lead up races.

Whistler is not a great training location for biking. Pool is fine and lake takes a while to heat up.

This is a win for the local triathletes over the world. But I am bias too.

Technique will always last longer then energy production. Improve biomechanics, improve performance.

not 100% accurate but 1180 finisher last year.(sportstats results) add the DNF and DNS and you have the full meal

2012 was over 3000 if you add DNF and DNS

the 70.3 as help greatly in making the race financially viable

One question, best in the world? Have you done the European IMs or the Asian/S. Pacific IMs?

It's probably unfair to compare any race now to high water IM participation rates in 2012. So yeah, I don't think Penticton is going to hit the numbers it achieved in the past even in year one (or is it 31). I did the ITU Long Course race there in 2017 and I've done 4 European IMs. Regardless of course differences between ITU and the so-called 'iconic' course back in the day, Penticton cannot hold a candle to any of the European venues. I've done IM South Africa too, and that one also squashed Penticton as both a destination event and in crowd support.

On the plus side, I did not consider getting to Penticton difficult (coming from Tampa, FL). I think many of the people who say it is hard to get to predominantly race only the venue closest to them. And I did like the swim there. But that's about it. Penticton certainly doesn't merit a repeat visit unless you are into wineries which are admittedly not my thing. However, like all IMs, I want to see it succeed. I just didn't see the big deal when I went. Jonnyo is right though, everyone is different.

I have done extensive training in Whistler and Penticton. Whistler, IMHO, is a far better location to train. Alta Lake is a great place to swim, and there are many other excellent choices nearby if you want to change things up. The road riding is mostly on the hiway, but there are large lanes to ride in, I always felt 100% safe (except the descent and climb to and from Pemberton, which is no longer an issue), and the running options are amazing.
In Penticton, and throughout the Okanagon, I NEVER felt safe riding. Narrow or no shoulders on most of the roads, tons of fast traffic, and poor sight lines for drivers due to the abundant curves. The lakes get much more wind and chop, and they are so big it is hard to get perspective on distance. I never found any good running trails, but I am sure there are some, just not as many or as obvious as at Whistler.
AND- I found the Okanagon to be beautiful, but BORING.
I never raced IM in Penticton due to the many logistic issues that have been noted, and the outrageous price gouging, but I trained there 2 summers, and rode the course several times. Even without considering the white knuckle traffic issues, I far prefer the riding in Whistler.
From a course perspective, Penticton would not make my top 10- sorry

I just flew to Spokane and had a pleasant drive up from there. It was straightforward and interesting to see how the geography changed so much on the drive.

I hear you on Nice. I flew direct from Tampa to Zurich for IM Switzerland - super simple, but getting to Ironman Norway was complicated although well worth the effort. Compared to going to Norway or South Africa (OMG - 3 flights including one over 15 hrs) traveling to Penticton is a nothing-burger.

But my "local IM" is IM Florida - a 6 hour drive with no need for TBT or a bike bag. I believe that is the sort of standard by which people are judging getting to Penticton.

Penticton is FAR easier to get to than Lake Placid.

Coming from the West Coast to Lake Placid for this years IM, I am flying from LA to Chicago, Chicago to Albany, and driving 2+hrs from Albany to Lake Placid.

As long as you can fly to Vancouver (most major airports fly direct), you can then get to Penticton or Kelowna pretty easily.

Sorry to hear that you didn't enjoy your time in Penticton. Next time you are up this way you will definitely have to check out the Run to the Tunnel past Naramata, the trail on the westside of Skaha Lake (or the better the loop of skaha), the KVR run to the summerland tressel or the trans Canada trail out in Summerland. All are pretty awesome routes. There are some more technical trails out here as well, but I find those are the best for Ironman training.

Swimming wise, the city shelters the lakes from the wind. So if the wind is coming from the North, Skaha will be calm enough to swim. If the wind is coming from the south, Okanagan will be calm. I agree that it can be hard to judge distances in the open water, that why I really like swimming in Okanagan Lake. The Peach to the Sicamous is about 1km (and easy to sight) and there are buoys spaced roughly 40m apart. Its great for measuring out workouts. (i.e 3 hard, one easy)

If anyone else is up in Penticton and wants some advice on training routes, swing by the Bike Barn on Saturdays and I would be thrilled to talk triathlon and tell you my favorite routes or what routes I think would work best for whatever training you have planned.

Easy logistics once you get here is one of the big advantages to Penticton. It's a big enough city that you have every thing you need, but small enough that everything is closeby. It takes less than 10mins to drive all the way across town.

The big plus though is that it is a single transition course with a fair amount of parking and hotels around. Easy to drop your bike off and get your race package. And super easy race morning. Its pretty rare these days to not have to get on a shuttle or walk to the race start.

There are also plenty of great safe riding and options from right from town for pre race workouts. And you can swim in either Skaha or Okanagan lake anytime you want.

THE MARKET, triathletes, has spoken Penticton was move successful. The numbers tell the story. Will they still ??? We will find out.

Also Penticton has come to find 'YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT YOU GOT TILL IT IS GONE.'

SIDE NOTE if in the last two years the US to Canadian dollar was closer I think a lot of western US athletes would not have come to whistler. I think it will help a lot come to Penticton if it is still the same. Cheaper race and cheaper exchange. If money is an issue while riding a $10,000 bike?

A western US racer can do Whistler for About $500. I think Zona was $880. Plus your dollar is worth so much more.

tons of awesome training around penticton as symonds has mentioned. While we want to support the local Penticton economy, other options include staying north up in Summerland, West Kelowna or Kelowna. I have done the commute from Kelowna to Penticton the morning of the race. Glad to see Ironman is coming home! (sung in the tone of england's football's coming home).

One perspective that I don't think really has been brought up in this thread has been that of the spectator.

And I'm not talking the "I'll sit on the patio of this cafe sipping my latte whilst watching those poor bastards suffer" sort of disengaged, casual spectator.

I'm talking the "Dutch Corner" calibre of spectator who is motivated and maybe rabid, and wants to see the suffering en masse.

The kinds of spectators who came in the hundreds to the Yellow Lake climb in the 90's and early 2000's and parked their cars and blasted their tunes and gave us their energy, an experience as close as most of us would/will ever come to Solar Hill.

What a showcase for the sport, what a spectacle, and an inspiration.

Having done the Whistler course, even on the Callahan & Pemberton climbs, nary a soul to be seen or heard. How sad.

If having an "easy & convenient" Ironman spectating experience is what you value(d) - I'd say yeah, what a shame that Whistler is gone. Well, the full distance anyway.

But if you spectate like you race, and you really want to experience the magnitude, and at times, the solitude, of the Ironman experience, the South Okanagan is the real deal.

I lived for 3 years in Whistler before they had the Ironman and also did IMC in Penticton on 3 occasions and in my view, the IM belongs in Penticton. It was my first Ironman and I loved everything about the race. Okanagan Lake is a nice place to swim, I loved the rolling hills and the entire course set up by the lake.

Whistler was a great place to live but after biking the roads there every single day, really wanted something different and Penticton checked all the boxes. I won't be racing there as I stopped triathlons but it's a great move so thank you for all the work you did to bring it back where it belongs.

So signed up for IM Canada this year, injured, unlikely to get better in time.

Was going to defer to 2020.

Does this mean I am now going to be racing Pentiction rather than Whistler?

Two more things for my IMC Penticton wishlist:

  • Have Steve King call the race

  • Keep the mass start for the swim

This! Penticton has a number of great and reasonably priced AirBnb's... When I was down for 2017 Multisport Worlds, we did an AirBNB that was fantastic, a fraction of the hotel prices, and minutes away from the T-zone (Pros close to transition, the neighbours were literally a vineyard... Con, post race, had to go up Vancouver ave. hill to get back...)... In terms of flying, I flew to Vancouver, and then Vancouver to Penticton (my wife flew to Vancouver a few days later and drove to penticton to catch my race, and then we drove back to vancouver, did a couple of days in whistler and a few days in Vancouver before flying back).

If you want a post race recovery recommendation, OK Wine Tours... we did that the day after my race at Worlds, and did 9 vineyards in half a day or so... (thankfully I shipped my bike up by ground, and left my gear bag near empty to be able to send back all of the wine we bought with the bike...)

I'm not sure what your overall point is but I agree that it is okay to like one over the other because they are very different places. I happen to prefer the amenities in Whistler as a destination to travel to, but I see why others would prefer Penticton, particularly people who live in the region.

One question, best in the world? Have you done the European IMs or the Asian/S. Pacific IMs?

By that logic Kona should be shelved as well. Hard to get to-check! Expensive accomodations-check! Deeply rooted emotional history-check! Granted, the two cities I've lived in during my Ironman racing days are Anchorage and Bend. So...I have a different perspective on what's hard to get to compared to Austin, TX.

johnnyo is right. There is no one race or type of course that pleases everyone. Personally, I loved the original Penticton course. I felt it fit 2000+ racers on the same course better than the multi-loop courses. At the same time, my family only saw me three times during the race and that is unappealing to others.

Ill agree. Having done Penticton and the original whistler IM I would say whistler wins for overall experience. Especially if you are taking your family. There is so much available in whistler for family and they can watch your race at mutiple times. Penticton is pretty much see you when Im done and have fun playing on the beach or hanging out in a not great hotel.

Given that, for the IM experience...Penticton is pretty sweet. The bike is huge. The mass start off the beach. the run along the lake. ( i hate the finish of the run though...through gross commercial area then back and forth along lakeshore)...

I will do penticton again though as it is my home race coming from lower mainland.

Still no comments on it but the last para in the article is interesting:

"With the information that's out there, there are, in my mind, only two likely scenarios explaining what happened: Either local officials were completely unaware that Ironman had been in discussions with Penticton behind its back (unlikely, given that Dave Christen, Ironman's regional director for Western Canada, has since told Pique the RMOW has been aware of the negotiations since the jump, though the RMOW said it found out in April), or the municipality signed a toothless contract that has potentially allowed one of Whistler's largest events to back out scot-free."

I can think of other scenarios that explain what happened. The author seems like he has an axe to grind with the municipality.

I wasn’t really clear. The article seemed to describe Ironman as both a minor event and one of Whistler’s biggest events.

It’s almost as if the landscapes of both Ironman and whistler shifted in different directions. and someone wanted to present their anger with RMOW.

I live in van. I love whistler. But whistler’s summer direction and Ironmans over the last 5 years have not been focussed on the same things. Even if Ironman had grown in the last 5 years, that would be the case.

Everyone seemed to love it. It brought lots of money in the shape of fans and competitors. It was not annoying in any way except I suppose for the very short time you couldn’t DRIVE on 99 but you never need to drive anyway

You can just walk or ride your bike on the valley trail

Whistler is ideally set up for IM. Crap tons of cheap accommodations, beautiful, friendly other than pemberton locals.

I’ve never heard of anyone saying they didn’t like it. Obviously I was wrong?

You get BC day then Ironman then wanderlust then crankworks. It’s a great month of fun

Wow! IM Penticton officially back! When I did it in 2001 and 2003 (my first 2 IM finishes) I lucked out and got in through the lottery. Man, I hope they keep the old course! Richter Pass and Yellow lake climbs kept things honest, and the downhill back into town definitely gave you a psychological shot in the arm prior to the run!

Someone mentioned about dryness and potential fire danger. Well, in 2003, there were huge fires! Flying into Kelowna it looked like pictures of flak from a WWII air raid! They changed the run to a 3-looper, and advised anyone with respiratory issues to sit this one out. They also made the swim 2 loops, as 1/2 their lifeguards were first responders, and they were out fighting the fires.

But the town came together and pulled it off- epic experience! I'd love to go back. I thought the AUG 30 date used to apply to IM in THAT year- does anyone have any inkling that it'll be for the following year? no matter, I'm going to race it either way...curious...and feeling that cool nervous buzz whenever I get the urge to sign up for another IM...

No, it's at tier 2 because AWA registration opened this morning. When I clicked on it two hours ago, it was still at tier 1. If you aren't AWA but in a WTC registered triclub, you may want to ensure your team contact member gets a link out because that's usually the next step in early registration.

From what I have seen it looks like the original single loop swim and bike will be the plan for 2020 when IMC returns to Penticton. The run is TBA - my gut tells me they will go with a 2 loop run that will have them weave around a bit in Town for more spectator interaction. That's fine - I liked the Run Out-and-Back to OK Falls - but keeping it in town with more spectator interaction, less volunteers needed etc . . is a win/win, and that I'm personally fine with.

Some of the discussion on the Facebook page dedicated to the return has been getting VERY nostalgic ( "They better do this" . . "They better do that" . . "It won't be IMC in Penticton with out this . .") . .. - and that is completely understood and OK. That nostalgia will be a BIG and important part of the return to Penticton. However, it's important to keep in mind that IMC was last in Penticton in 2012. The sport, and perhaps more importantly the business of the event management side of the sport is VERY different than it was 7 years ago! Everyone will need to go into this with an open mind and keep expectations in check!

Thinking about this again, Victoria was announced as a Women For Tri race with extra 25 slot to Taupo, so it can't be any later than June. I doubt they would move it later in June without making a change to Coeur d'Alene as well, so perhaps he was right about it being earlier, if only by a week or two?

Either way, I am anxious about this because I am really hoping it is June 7th or 14th such that I can race it after coming back from Hawai'i 70.3.

I've done the Penticton IMC twice, in 2002 and again in 2012. I had hopes of doing it every ten years as kind of an excuse to stay in shape. When the race moved to Whistler I completely gave up on that idea since its not very convenient. I'm a local "Cawston" athlete so I enjoy the outandback section the most, riding by my house. Now that Pen has the race back, seriously thinking about doing it again in 2022. I sold my bike though and don't want to spend much money so thinking of just going really old school. No wetsuit, cheap 10 speed bike, etc. Good times.

Penticton has an airport (YYF) but I almost always fly in and out of Kelowna (YLW) and sometimes Vancouver (YVR). The drive is about 70 minutes from YLW and about 4 hours from Vancouver.

Hey are you racing IMC Penticton next year?

Yep! Because I grew up Penticton, racing here and doing well motivates me on a even deeper level than Kona. It's the one I go to bed and wake up dreaming about. There is also a huge contingent of awesome locals already signed up for 2020 and I want to be a part of the year long journey building towards it! And hen I say locals I am talking about the Pentictonites and also the amazing people I have met along the way from other parts of Western Canada.

I'll figure out Kona after. But between now and then I'll focus on keeping the rubber side down and my collarbones in one piece! ;)

Well we are cheering for you....it will be 9 years after you podium'd with Crowie and Kienle at 70.3's worlds Vegas so no doubt you can figure out Kona, but winning at home will be awesome. My first Ironman was IMC 1991 Penticton. Just starting jogging and biking again after 4 years of my own sets of accidents etc and just did my first Olympic tri in 4 years 2 weeks ago. Sticking to Olympics but having an eye on Penticton 2021 which would be the 30 year date for a rendez vous. Hopefully by then you are defending champion.

I was wondering if you would try and come back for this race Dev, I never thought the race would come back to Penticton, I thought it was all just a memory of glory days, I also said that Whistler this year would be my last full distance race, but then the link for priority entrance came.... I imagine there will be a good crowd there next year.

Dev, we in the local (Penticton) area are all chipping in somewhere between 20 & 25 $ to bubble wrap Jeff S for the months of June, July, and the first part of August next year so he is able to make it to the START line of the 2020 Penticton Ironman Canada race uninjured.

All contributions will be gratefully accepted. Based on his face and his pace yesterday during the Peach Classic tri, the dude is back!

I just registered and got in no problems. Active says there are 373 people viewing the event currently, not sure if that's real or not.

kinda funny how they still have almost no information (just that 1 little page) about the 2020 Race

all the other "new" races had some sort of standard race site set up when registration opened

Well, I'm in.

Grew up in Coeur d'Alene watching and volunteering the full, but by the time I got my life sorted to participate, they 86d the full.

Moved down south, ran Chattanooga last summer; no swim.

Moving to Seattle next week, and this seems like the perfect way to resolve never racing in the PacNW and not getting my swim last year. Nice clear, cool lake swim sounds great to me. I'm excited.

Dev, just like the return of Ironman to Penticton, JC's return to triathlon is part of a wisely crafted & long term plan. As you can see in the link Johnny is already back in the press!
