Summer AND winter tyres OR all season

I need to replace both, the original tyres that were on car and the winter ones I bought.

Do I go still with two sets or can I go with one?

No performance requirements as its a crap family SUV, so are four season tyres any good?

Depends on where you live, how much you drive, do you really need to go out in bad conditions, etc.

Personally - I do use snow tires on all of our cars and we don't get much snow. Its a cheap option to give my wife and son that little bit of extra security in bad weather.

I use winter and all season. I just changed them over because it has been warm in the 50s and 60s with spring here. But tomorrow we are getting 15 inches of snow. Its always a gamble when to take off the winter and put on the all season tires.

All season are probably fine for 99.9999 percent of people. We have all seasons on the Grand Cherokee and we go up to the mountains to ski just about every weekend in the winter. We haven’t had any issues and have drove through some major shit up there. That said I would put winter tires on but the Denver metro is generally pretty warm and I would just blow through the tires commuting to work.

I have Nokian WRs on our Pilot that are all seasons with a winter rating and are quite good, (have had 5 sets on various vehicles). They give you 85%of a winter, but the pure winters on our other cars are better for sure. Regular all seasons have sucked in the snow IMO. Easy to get going but hard to stop.

All season tyres are really 3-season tyres. I wouldn't drive in winter without proper winter tyres. It's not just about the snow, but the rubber compound works better in cold conditions as well.

You don't need to replace the winters for another 6 months or so anyway.

We got 10-15 cms of snow this morning, and the plows did their usual (crappy) job. I wouldn't make it up a lot of the hills around here without snow tyres.

I live in a place where it snows most days in the winter and I have a long commute, much of it across rural highways. All wheel drive and winter tires for both cars.

My car came with summer specific tires so I see no reason to go to an all season tire for the rest of the year.

Many people mistakenly call winter tyres as 'snow tyres' and assume their primary function is to better grip in deep snow.
Yes - they generally have a slightly more aggressive tread pattern and are a little better in gripping snow - though if deep snow is an issue then you need to consider chains, and if ice is an issue then spikes.

The primary reason people should consider winter tyers is based on the TEMPERATURE they operate at. The potential snow cover on roads is a distant second when considering winter tyers.

The tyre rubber's physical properties change as the temperature drops - at very cold temperatures the material becomes much stiffer, and less plastic (rubbery). Because of that the tyre does not 'squish' into the microscopic ridges and holes of the cold pavement. ( https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S1996681416301973 )

Another factor is that the cooeficient of friction for rubber drops in cold weather.

If you live in a place like Lyon and the winter temperature is generally above 0C and you only occasionally go into the mountains to ski then you may be OK.
If you live in a place like Montreal or Minneapolis and drive on the highway at +100km/hr in temperatures below -15C, then you should seriously consider winter tires. Your car will stop much faster.

Remember - It's important to be comfortable in your own skin... because it turns out society frowns on wearing other people's

I assume you mean no racing/track days in the SUV etc. The poorer the vehicle's inherent dynamics are, the more important it would be to arm it with "good" tires. Those four palm-size contact patches are the only thing connecting you and family to the road - You want those patches to perform.

Good all seasons > shitty winter tires
In winter*, Good winters >> Good all seasons

Good to research the options for your vehicle and conditions. Tire Rack: https://www.tirerack.com/...r_snow/packages.html is a good place to start on winter tire considerations.

I always put the OEM tires on my CX-5. Where we live they seem to work pretty good all around.

The only vehicle I own that I don't stay with OEM is my MX-5. That car has tires on it that are borderline track tires, the softest compound you can legally use on the road, but that car never gets driven below 50 degrees, never in snow, and rarely in rain.

Been through this debate many, many times.
First 4 kinds of tires

Summer -- DO NOT DRIVE BELOW 40f -- We ground cars with summer tires below 40, I got the privlege of moving a very expensive sports car with summer tires through a parking lot when it was about 48. OMG any throttle the tires broke free, basically idled to where I had to go...

All Season-- the compromise

Winter - Best in low sub 40F temperatures. But interestingly if the road is just wet (not icy, not slushy just water wet) All Seasons perform better, But cold dry, snow or ice and much better performance.

Snow/MUD - these tires have huge block treads with big gaps to allow the snow and mud to get out,,, highway driving they will scream really bad.. not for everyday driving.

Live in Michigan went to school in the U.P. 100" + of snow up there is the norm. Drove all that and 48yrs of my life on all seasons.

Drove a volt for 5 yrs. The first winter on All Seasons .. Got winter tires the next year right before an 11" storm that I drove what should have been an 1hr drive to and from the State VB championship. It was more like 4 hrs each way. I got home driveway had 11' (ground clearance on Volt is about 6") I drove up my drive with no problem. only when I went to get pizza did i see I had plowed the snow and had a nice snow pile with the front of my car molded into it. Driving around town was so fun.. Had I had the all season, I would have tried to make the event but definitely would not have driven home. And not sure I would have made it there.

We always have 1 car with winter tires in the house. If you have a choice of not driving in really bad weather, you can live without winter tires. Yes you might get in an accident that the snow tires would have saved you from but you wont know it. But have 1 car on winter tires so that if you have to go out in a storm you can. --- personal decision.. TIres cost you about $600 for 4 plus $120 a year to get mounted and unmounted.

How much more are you going to eat up winter tires if it’s over 40+? It can routinely be in the 50s+ in Denver over the winter. I wouldn’t have a problem buying them, since we go up to the mountains so often, but don’t want to destroy them on my commute to work and only get a year or two out of them.

I usually get 2-3 seasons out of my snow tires in the Denver metro area. Put them on in early Nov, take them off in early Apr. the bonus is my all seasons last a bit longer also.

I figure I spend ~30-40% more on tires than I normally would, but it is a small price for the benefits. I’ve used several different brands, but the Michelin x-ice and Blizzak’s from Costco seem to work the best.

My winter tires are on OEM focus 15" steelies. They run between $25 and $50 from a junkyard. Ford also recommends I run 15" winter tires, and my spare is a full size 15". About $125 for 4 wheels, $50 for mounting (screw TPS for winter tires), swap in the driveway ;)

Smaller wheel with a wider aspect ratio on winter tires helps a lot for comfort and if your REALLY stuck, more flotation.

I lived in front range for 20 years without snow tires- two seasons ago I got them (my hybrid SUV brakes were just a little more touchy on ice and we drive over Berthoud pass most weekends). I will never go back to not having them. They make such a difference- I got Blizzaks. We now take my suv over my husband’s truck when weather is bad because the tires make such a difference.

This reminds me I need to make an appointment to get them off- but I am through two complete seasons on them and they probably have 2-3 more. That said I have a 4 mile commute in town so most of my mileage is the weekly commute to Winter Park.

I live in WI and just buy one set of tires - I don't know anyone here who does differently - I wouldn't even know how to buy a winter tire and feel like a pussy to just enquiry into it.

My understanding, is winter tires are really only good for 3 or 4 winters. The rubber starts to harden.

Over 40 winter tires are getting soft and will wear faster. In Michigan we bounce around 40 for a month or two. Fortunately I don't drive much. I have heard stories of folks buying winter tires and leaving them on all year. Get a couple years out of them then replace.

Never seen any performance testing of Winter tires in the summer.. ahh new research to do.

needless to say I do know how to buy them, just pulling collective legs. Never thought I needed them as roads here are kept pretty clean (ignoring WindyWave's rants to the contrary)

I am going to continue with both

The problem is that Monday to Friday I'm on the coast and whilst dec and Jan are cold-ish (under 10c and frequently close to freezing). Every weekend is in the mountains, and I've spent 70 odd days in the alps

So the tyres are wearing fast, because it's too hot at home and it's 1000 km round trip to the Alps, but there's no doubt when the weather's bad, they have been worth it.

It's seems that's the solution, but u have to accept driving back and forth just wears them excessively

My N=1 - I’ve lived in ski/mountain towns for nearly 20 years and have never had a set of winter tires and another set of summer tires. We talk to a trusted tire shop and get the most aggressive all season mud/snow rated tire they recommend. We’ve never had space to store a spare set of tires, but we also have never felt the need to have winter specific tires.

Needing better tires... I would agree, untill that snow storm, as a few who have tried them have said, once you try them its very eye opening, how much traction your losing.

Its like some people have 2 or 3 bikes.. not needed but appreciated in the right conditions.

There are some great video's out there on ice rinks, of all wheel drive all season, vs 2 wheel winter tires. The other big thing or winter tires they help you go, stop and corner better.

Sure, if you don't want to maximize summer grip ;)

Cause I drive sports and sporty cars year round, I chose to have nice sticky tires in the summer that are crap in the winter.

My wife's previous ride was a BMW convertible, slammed on coilovers, rear wheel drive, etc. It had strictly summer tires on it and it was a complete joke in any freezing temps. Bought used wheels on CL and some blizzaks with one season on them for $200 and it turned that thing into a winter tank. With the traction control that thing was an absolute beast in the winter, only problem was it sat so low that it became a snowplow on bad days.

Her current car is an Acura MDX with AWD and all-season tires on it. She has a long commute, but we only have 5-10 snow days most years. She was just fine without winter tires this year. We took a trip to go snow shoeing and I was amazed that it was very hard for me to lose traction on a snow covered mountain road. The AWD is all we needed for starting and cornering, winter tires would have made braking better but the all seasons were fine for that.

I don't mind increasing stopping distances and slowing more for corners so I run Continental DWS 06's on my rear wheel drive BMW and it did fine this winter. Not amazing in the snow, but as long as I can get moving and not get stuck I am fine. That Acura with the AWD would be hard to get stuck, winter tires or not.

I live in Colorado and use all season tires on everything that isn't a sports car. However, with the exception of the recently purchased minivan all my other vehicles have AWD or 4 wheel drive.
