Do you Follow any Influencers?
There's a nice piece here about resorts pushing back against so-called influencers looking for freebies.

I follow about 30 (apart from friends and family) on instagram, mostly athletes, cooks, and this one guy who trawls the banks of the Thames and finds incredible bits of history. Some fashion, but they mostly get shut down for being too commercial.

Is there anybody you like on Instagram who's an inspiration?

He was on Instagram before it was cool. Now that everyone is on Instagram he switched to a different platform. You probably haven't heard of it.

It's one thing to follow people on Instagram who do or say interesting things. It's another to follow anyone who refers to themselves as an "Influencer." When I hear that term, I think of Kardashian-wannabes who're looking for free stuff and attention in exchange for taking pictures of themselves in their bathroom mirrors with duckface and too much eye makeup.

I had to ask my wife what an influencer was. So you mean an influencer is a self important d-bag using something called Instagram? O.K. Now tell me what Instagram is.

Right. There's nothing inherent about the term influencer that annoys me - every sponsored athlete is an influencer and while I don't proactively follow any I don't shield myself either and at some level am undoubtedly influenced by the brands they wear. The weirdness has crept in around people who do nothing except [pretend to] exist in a way that other people find aspirational. There's something profoundly unhealthy about tracking the lifestyle of someone you don't know, don't admire, don't find interesting or funny and might not even like just because you wish you looked the way they look, or because they post photos of a lifestyle you wish you had.

I agree. I'm young-ish, and of the age of people who primarily follow these individuals, but someone calling themselves an "influencer," hurts my soul. I just can't help but cringe and want to run as far away from anyone who describes themselves that way.

The people that I follow on instagram consist primarily of friends and family, but also photographers whose work I admire, several cyclists, and way too many beautiful car builds.

Actually, and I know I'm going to be made fun of for this, but I actually have two instagram's.

One is just like my main instagram for wahtever, post pictures of nature or my wife or me or rafting or whatever I want. The other one is dedicated to my Forester, as well as any other cars that I shoot.

The closest I get to an influencer that I follow is DC Rainmaker.

There was a good article somewhere yesterday about influencers ruining the poppy bloom in south California.

I couldn't agree more. It's like the cool kids in high school never grew up and took their petty nonsense online.

I follow no one.

I don't use anything where I can follow someone.

Watch the 2 doc's out about the Frye festival.. its all crap..

Influencers.. why would these people influence me, I don't know them, they don't know me, why would I want to do what they say or do? Why would anyone?

Pictures are potent, they set the bar for how somebody should look, eat live. Or organise their tool wall or knot their tie.

old school influencers would be the likes of Joe DiMaggio, Greta Garbo, Julia Child. The queen bee soccer mom. They just had different platforms.

It's true

She shut her IG down when all the Ashley Whorener stuff was going on back in March, and when it came back up, I was no longer a follower [she might've kicked me off, i dunno] but I didn't re-follow

I promised that I'd do a Hail Mary if I went over and peeked during Lent

Agreed. They're usually looking down in the photo, probably with that weird "toe point" pose girls do in such photos these days.

Fucking “influencers” trying to be the next Kardashian and monetize their “brand”. I don’t know what’s worse, all the hashtags or the stupid motivational quote that has to accompany each photo.

Actually come to think of it - I do know what’s worse. it’s being on vacation at a resort and just wanting to relax by the pool with a cocktail, but having a wannabe influencer next to you taking selfies literally.all.the.time. Bravo to that resort owner.

That’s not true. Those people were famous because they had accomplishements. 99% of people that consider themselves influencers have accomplished nothing beyond working the internet monetarily due to the stupidity and gullibility of a frightening proportion of the population.

The first time I heard the term "influencer" was on the Fyre Festival documentary. Influencers were paid to convince the masses that Fyre Festival was the party not to be missed. The next time I heard the term was the Ivy School scandal and that Lori Loughlin's daughter was an influencer. Not impressed.

I have the same problem with anyone who describes themselves as a "Celebrity". What a bunch of C**ts.

Seriously though - Instagram is great - How else would i get through a 2 hour meeting without being able to look at surfing, bikes and chicks on bikes, while pretending i'm so important that i am emailing people from my phone.
