Yet another fit feedback request
Hi all,

I received had a Guru fit in an effort to sized for a new (and first) tri bike. Things seemed to go well and I walked away with everything I thought I needed to shop around, though after digging into X/Y chats I have some concerns.

Specifically, this fit seems to be on the tall and short end of things, enough so that some bikes just won't work. While this position seemed plenty comfy, it certainly didn't feel aggressive, stretched or low. Unfortunately we didn't go low or long out of concern of ending up too long to fit most bikes. In hindsight that appears to have been a mistake.

Also worth noting - I've never been on an actual TT bike, so I don't have any kind of previous experience to reference.

With all that said, I'd love to hear anyone or everyone's input on where I ended up. Should I shop to these numbers, start from scratch or something in between?

Fit video:

Retul numbers (170 vs. 175 cranks): https://imgur.com/a/2kAkIbl

Thanks all, very much appreciate any and all input.

Long and low isn’t necessarily the same for everyone. Your back seems fairly flat and your head not much higher than you back which is a trait I think you see from the ‘long and low’ riders on this forum. I am definitely not a fit expert or even novice though. It does appear your legs are extremely long to me which would result in a seemingly more upright position just looking at numbers but when you look at the actual video it doesn’t seem upright to me basing it on other fits tat have been deemed upright by the people who know. I will be curious to see if anyone says your saddle should be raised just a bit. I will also be curious to see if they say to move everything forward a bit as it somewhat appears you are sitting back a ways in relation to the bb. Again though I am not one to listen to fit. My main comment is long and low is not necessarily the same for everyone and if you have long legs and a shorter torso the actual fit numbers will seem to be skewed.

you're not really sitting on the saddle correct, but once you are (slide forward and "perch" and see if that's comfortable) it'll look pretty good.

ETA - and once you do that you might have to raise the saddle a bit.

That's a good point that I didn't mention. I'm on the tall side (6'4") and mostly legs. Appreciate the thoughts!

Huh, good to know. Here I was thinking I really need to get one of these super comfortable split nose saddles.

What saddle are you using in the video?

you are riding an ISM in that video, correct? my post was based on that. you're still not sitting on it correctly, if so.

Yes, it's an ISM of some variety. I don't recall the exact model but am confirming.

Any other thoughts out there by chance? I'm getting itchy to N+1 and really don't want to end up on the wrong bike.

Thanks.

Ryan, first off the camera angle is not the best to evaluate the fit in my opinion. I would recommend contacting the fitter to set up a follow up appointment if you want to see if you can go lower in the front which can also depend on what distance racing you are doing, comfort and pedaling efficiency. The handlebar stack and reach numbers look decent to me but your hip angle shows you should have room to go lower. Taking a quick look you would fit on a 61cm Cervelo P3 with a 100mm, -6deg stem with 26mm of spacers under the stem including the bearing top cap. What bikes are you interested and what did the fitter recommend?

Good to know about the angle and follow up, though he was hesitant to go lower for some reason.

The 61cm P3 was at the top of the recommended list along with the XL Shiv. There wasn't much beyond that.

The P3 is on my personal short list, though I can get a great deal on an XL E-117 if I can make that work. Not having a ton of luck finding an X/Y grid for that model though.

Fit is pretty solid. I actually think you are a bit too stretched out, if anything..

Your fitter is not the problem (the fit is competent). You're just a long-legged dude.

+1

You look stretched out on the front end, but you are a lanky dude and if that's comfortable, you're good to go.

We ended up pushing the pads out a time or two and it still felt good. Probably something that needs to be tested for longer than a single session though. Will make sure I've got some fore/aft flexibility with whatever I end up on.

Anyway, genuinely appreciate everyone's input. Time to go shop for short and high.

do you know if your fit numbers for reach are to mid-pad or to the back of the pad?

If you were to select a P5d, you'd be outside of the normal range for stack unless you used the P3x mono-riser, in which case you would be a size 58cm P5d.

James is right, you're not sitting on the saddle properly... if you were you'd need to raise saddle as he said and possibly also add reach if you get the correct pelvic rotation.

What types of races are you going to do? I'd argue that you could even go to 165mm cranks if you were doing triathlon.

Finally, the other poster is right...that video is at a bad angle and not optimal for analysis by internet.

Start with that seat. Either change it or sit on it properly. ( Ur junk must be getting smashed)
Change ur seat contact point then see how everything else is affected.

For those of us needing to learn to sit on our seats properly, can someone say what to look for and what is wrong here with how he is on the seat? Too far back on it?

Think ur boys hanging off the saddle. Only using the first couple inches of the seat. Then rotating ur hips so that ur driving in stomach towards the top tube... Maybe Eric can do better at a description.

The Cobb JOF saddle name describes it. "Just Off the Front".

Though I think it would be better as "Junk Off the Front". ie the tip of the saddle should be supporting the pelvic bones at your perineum.
Sadly these points are usually soft and you get chafed if you ride too far, until the skin toughens up.

To the OP: looking at that video it sure doesn't look short and tall to me.

Mid/back pad - I believe those numbers are mid-pad, though it's a good point that I'll confirm.

Races - Planning a half and full distance in the foreseeable future and won't rule out jumping in anything else that strikes my fancy between now and then. Nothing requiring UCI compliance currently on the horizon.

Cranks - I tried 175 (what I currently ride on road and MTB), 170 and 165 while I was there. I felt best on the 170s, though not strongly enough to rule out any other options.

Well that explains why I had to tuck my equipment into its full upright and stowed position...
