Relocating to Jacksonville, FL area (likely home in St Johns/Nocatee/Ponte Vedra area). Cycling and swimming suggestions.

I just accepted a transfer to Jacksonville, FL. I posted something similar in the Lavender Room but there's more eyes over here. We're looking for a home in the Beachwalk neighborhood. What are some good riding routes in the area?

Swimming is already covered:

I have heard from one forum member and a couple of other people regarding concerns with Beachwalk so certainly looking at other options.

Didn’t you post something about moving to somewhere in North Carolina awhile back?

That unfortunately fell through. This was choice #2 and a done deal.

How big a place do you need and what's your budget. We're about to put my folks ocean front condo in Ponte Vedra Beach up for sale.

+1 Ponte Vedra is awesome. I have family in that area and the trip up and down A1A to St Augustine through the Guana is a ride I make sure to hit anytime I'm over that way. Nearby pools and the Atlantic for swimming too.

Yeah. Nice place. Warm weather. I've spent 5-6 weeks there for the last few years. Only made 2 weeks this past November, though. I intend to buy a condo there when I get my house in VA sold.

Nocatee is a great place to ride and run. There isn’t a lake like beach walk but there is an 8 lane pool open 5a-10p 6 days a week.

I spoke with a realtor who said his advice would be to avoid Beachwalk for now. Awesome potential but it's not selling well so who knows what future development will be like and buying there could be a gamble.

So areas we are considering in St Johns are Celestina (Lennar) and Julington Lakes (Toll Brothers).

Areas more in the Nocatee/Ponte Vedra area would include Coastal Oaks, 20 Mile, and Palencia.

What nice gyms for the family and swimming pools are near these areas?

I've live in St Johns (Durbin Crossing, west of I-95) for about 7 years now, moving there from Ohio.

I gotta tell you, the riding is really disappointing here. But from Beachwalk, I'd head west (SR210/Long Leaf Pine/ SR16) over toward the river. Roads are a little wider with a bike lane.

There are some strong groups that ride from PV Beach area into Nocatee, and some groups that come south out of Jax into St Johns regularly through the week.

Coastal Oaks and Twent Mile are both in Nocatee. There are two water parks for Nocatee residents (pools, lazy river, slides, zip lines, full bar, etc). If you bring the kids along in your home search and they see the water parks it’s over. There are also smaller pools in both neighborhoods.

There aren’t many gyms in St. John’s county outside of the resident gyms that all the communities have, which are typically more than adequate.

FYI - Planet Swim broke ground on a new facility in the Nocatee area which will be a true aquatics center with weight/strength training facilities as well. Have not heard of ETA as of yet other than 2020.

Headed to JK today for my house hunting trip. Coastal Oaks and The Outlook at Twenty Mile are the neighborhoods that interest us the most so far, without having set foot on ground yet.

Are you going to work for USCIS? I hate the Jax office. Took them forever to process my citizenship! 19 months! For no reason. And when I went for the interview they asked me 6 stupidly easy questions. That pissed me off even more. ;)

Looked at 30 homes the last few days. The list was narrowed down to five homes (new construction). Top three are in Twenty Mile. Sticker shock compared to the Houston ‘burbs but that Nocatee area is nice.

There is no JAX Running Company. They closed a long time ago. I would recommend Bicycles Etc out in Nocatee and the owner, Mike Scarbrough.

They were still open late 2016. Hadn’t followed up since I rarely go to jax. But either way 2 years ago at most isn’t quite a long time ago.

Unless you’re 8yo ;)

I wouldn’t want to live in nocatee if you paid me!

I live in San Marco. Pool 5 min away - I think 4 options at least. Bike out my front door in double wide bike lane. Can run lots of great places including the bridges.

Walk to restaurants and kids school. But I like historic over new. Been in Jax since 2008.

Spent lots of time biking and running where you’re looking but no way I’d live there.

If you want to check out my neck of the woods I’d be happy to show you around.

My in-laws have a “beachfront “ townhome in that beachwalk thing. Haven’t seen it yet. Glad I can go visit. No way I’d ever live there.

Contrary to comment above, I’ve heard the prices have been climbing like crazy due to demand. I think my in-laws home is now being sold for ~1.5x what they paid.

I live north of Jax in Fernandina. I'm selling my home and moving just over the GA border because of the recent sticker shock. The Nocatee/St.Johns areas are booming the last few years. Even north of Jax is absurd. We made over 20% on our house in under 3 years. The crazy influx of people has made the riding tough, up here at least. I know they (velobrew) do rides on saturday's from Jax Beach roughly 60-80 miles but they like to throw down pretty hard, Jax running company is no more, but Owen is still in the Jax area.

Believe it or not your best bet is either to head south on US1 or make your way over to A1A and ride south. With that said, I wouldn't do a ton of riding in the area. The roads are just too busy anymore.

Bought a home in Twenty Mile. If that helps with further advice and counsel as to training, etc.

You are in a great spot for training.

You have access to the Nocatee swim club, which is very convenient. There are 8 lanes and it’s open 5a-10p every day but Monday. The youth team practices after school til about 8 but they leave a lane or two open. Any other time you won’t have to share a lane. There are also 3 lanes in the pool at Twenty Mile Park but that pool isn’t heated and doesn’t have lights.

You can bike and run from your house. There are bike lanes all over Nocatee and traffic isn’t very heavy. It’s big enough that you can get a long ride in without seeing the same thing over and over. I do a 25 mile route without leaving Nocatee or going the same direction on the same road twice.

There are golf cart paths and sidewalks all over Nocatee. You can get a long run in without having to cross any major intersections and they are all well lit.

Twenty Mile is very close to the Palm Valley Bridge if you need some hills. Depending on where in twenty mile it’s as close as 1-3 miles.

It’s basically perfect for a triathlete.

Not to revive a dead thread but are there any public access long course pools? Moved to Jax recently from Vancouver BC and surprised by the lack of long course.

Episcopal high school has a masters class that is long course from April to August. That's pretty much the only one.

And for the original poster, Longleaf/210/13 South of Roberts Rd, 16 and any of the side roads back there are all good riding areas.

DuPont YMCA has LCM. not public tho and not sure how to get access. Not a typical YMCA. Only time I swam there was w a swim team years ago.

Come swim with me at LA fitness. Pool always empty and always open (even when it should be closed for some reason or another!)
