Santa Cruz 70.3 bike course preview ride viablity
Quote | Reply
I have an upcoming wedding that will take me to Santa Cruz this summer, about a month before IM 70.3 Santa Cruz, my "A" race for the year. I figured I may as well ride the bike course if possible before the wedding.

Can anyone who has been to / lives in the area comment on traffic conditions and safety of riding the course when it's not closed for the race? It looks to mostly be along Highway 1. Is there a nice wide median where I can really dial-in race pacing/feel/etc., or am I going to feel like I'm about to be run off a cliff by cars flying by the whole time?

Here is a link to the course:

Hwy 1 is fine - we ride it all the time. The shoulder is narrow in some parts, but it’s mostly generous. Not Queen K generous, but adequate. Cars are also used to cyclists.

BTW, it’s not flat. No big climbs, but a lot of rolling. Going north you’ll typically have headwind and then fly going south, but sometimes it can be the reverse.

Last year the course was closed to most traffic for the race. It was amazing

As a solo rider the road is pretty safe when open to traffic. Nice shoulder most of the way
