How long before you stop drinking the Trump kool aid? I didnât know it was possible to be that thick. So easy to say when you don't have migrants climbing over your fence to get inside your house. Tell me you leave the doors to your house and car unlocked at night. Do you also leave your bike unlocked on the street when you go in for your Starbucks? Here's a definition of thick for you......ignoring the fact we have a crisis at the border.......unless you think thousands of undocumented Central Americans pouring into our country is not a crisis. Which I guess you do. Good luck with that. Did you know that the vast majority of those undocumented immigrants are claiming asylum legally at ports of entry? And 90% are being returned after processing. If that's your definition of a crisis necessitating a giant wall along the Rio Grande, you need to do some research. Let me see. Who should I believe? You experts on whats going on at the border....or the heads of DHS, ICE, Border Patrol who (are not given press coverage on CNN) all confirm in many interviews that we absolutely need more fencing/wall at critical points on the border. Hmmmm, let me think about this and get back to you. You are confusing a couple of things and buying into the fear-mongering of Trump that he hopes to use to get reelected.
1. There is no crisis at the border. In fact there is less of crisis now than there has been in years past as crossing attempts are way down. From DHS own stats: "
In FY17, CBP recorded the lowest level of illegal cross-border migration on record, as measured by apprehensions along the border and inadmissible encounters at U.S. ports of entry" from
here. 2. You are confusing crime rates and illegal border crossing. Crime rates in El Paso were way down prior to the wall being built in El Paso and its surrounding area in 2008. You can read that
here and
here.
The first link has a nice graphic which will help you understand that El Paso was never one of this nation's most dangerous cities and has historically been MUCH safer than similarily sized cities. Any other take is just bullshit, that Trump likes to spew.
3. But, that said the wall has made a difference in crossing attempts in and around El Paso. Stats by sector for 2000 to 2017 can be found
here. You can see the drastic reduction after 2008.
So did the wall make a difference in crossing attempts in El Paso? Absolutely. Did it make an impact crime in El Paso? Absolutely not.
I guess that says more about the people of the city of El Paso and those that want to get here than it does about those that are willing to take a face value what a political leader who desires to create fear so that he can make good on a campaign promise- facts be damned.
Suffer Well.
