Product Review - ChiliCube Mattress Cooling or "How do you sleep at night"
Ok firstly: I am not in any way paid to do this or compensated in any fashion. I have bought both units we own.

Now with that out of the way.

The ChiliCube / ChiliPad is potentially the best purchase you could EVER make for your sleep. I became aware of this "type" of product (basically a mattress cooling pad) a couple of years ago when we moved to the desert. Keeping your AC set below 70 during the summer months is just murder on your wallet. The ideal sleeping temperature is 65. How do we make up for this discrepancy? Especially when you are a competitive athlete, sleep is probably the most important thing you're not doing right. It's always taken for granted. I've always assumed I was a good sleeper; I got 8 hours a night on average and rarely woke up during the night and felt like my body temperature was normal.

My spouse, on the other hand, did not. When we moved to AZ, it was a struggle to NOT set the thermostat below 70. I didn't want to because I didn't want to pay for that decrease in temperature (and by me pay I mean she pays, she's the boss), so I started looking around for something to either cool the room itself (inefficient) or cool the sleeper. I was listening to an interview that a pro athlete did and he was mentioning that he takes sleep very seriously: room darkening shades (we already do that), mattress cooler, etc. So I texted him and asked which product he used and he mentioned the ChiliCube.

I started reading about this thing, and the only thing that bothered me was the price: $500 for a "Twin XL" (basically half of a king mattress). But I ended up ordering one for my wife's birthday, and I continue to pat myself on the back for this gift ever since.

When she started using it, she described it as "life altering." I assumed this was hyperbole, and carried on about my normal business. I didn't need one, so I just didn't worry about it. She sleeps hot, I do not. Why waste money on something I won't "need?"

Fast forward a few months, I am cleaning her unit and it drops off the table. The screen no longer works. Shit. She was on a work trip, and I was worried for my life's safety if she got back and the so-called "life altering" ChiliCube wasn't working. So I hurriedly contacted Chili (based in Mooresville, NC) and got a repair/service request going but realized that was going to be a 2 week turnaround. So I panic-ordered another Twin XL unit from Amazon and got it the day she was getting back from her work trip. No harm, no foul (except to my wallet).

Two weeks go by and we get the serviced unit back. I think, I'll just install this on my side and see what it's like.

Life altering.

I mean that in the most serious way that I can. I recently had a two week period where the Cube wasn't working and I was getting hot at night, sweating, etc. Got it fixed and the past two nights have been absolutely glorious. Keeping your "cocoon" at 65 degrees all night (even in the winter) is - to be frank - spectacular. It is absolutely and completely worth the cost and the occasional headaches (Chili has a great product, but maintenance and service seems to be troublesome at times).

It makes you sleep sooooooo much better. If you've at all been on the fence about something like this, you should strongly consider making the purchase. It pays for itself both through altering the way you use AC at night, and in the quality of your sleep/recovery.

FWIW, I also have a BedJet, it sucks.

Nobody asked questions about this, which makes me believe that not enough people are interested in this product. Maybe my title sucked. Or maybe you're all happy to sleep crappy.

I need something like this but it sounds like this product has some issues.

Why was your unit out of commission for 2 weeks?

I would say if you stick to the maintenance schedule it's probably better. It's easy to forget about.

My unit wasn't pumping and it took me two weeks to decide to deal with it. This time I fixed it by unplugging it and plugging it back in. Chili had created an RMA for me, however.

There is no other product like this. Even if it has occasional issues (what doesn't?) It's worth it.

Curious, where did "The ideal sleeping temperature is 65" come from?

My sleep has been severely compromised after getting into a serious relationship. When I sleep naked or with a light sheet cover, the now spouse has 2-3 blankets + pajamas. She's always cold and I'm more or less always at least a little too hot. We're currently able to coexist after splurging for silk bedding (significantly cooler to touch for me, but "nice smooth feel" for her so she's ok with it), and a fancy down blanket for her so she let's me crack the window open without freezing herself.

The one thing I'm noticing is that it's the last few hours of the night/morning when I typically get the deepest sleep (just a feel based observation, no devices used) and it's the hardest for me to NOT sleep during that time, and I even get cold without a cover myself. Really wish I could somehow move that time period a few hours back so I could fall and stay deep asleep when it's bed time rather than when it's almost wake up time.

65 would never work for me. when I first became hypothyroid, an 80 deg house was too cold to sleep. I would have comforters on to sleep and even with treatment, I am still cold and use an electric blanket. folks that live in the snow country would not like to sleep in 65 deg houses in winter without a crap ton of blankets, imo :) 65 may be good for someone that is hyperthyroid or borderline or is jkhayc like or a teen(my 2 kids) :)

currently, in my 67 deg house, 4 hours post snow shoveling, my hands are still fricking freezing

I don't think there have been any true studies (and a quick browse of pubmed doesn't reveal much), but a quick google browse reveals a lot of "information" regarding optimal sleep temperature:

https://www.sleep.org/articles/temperature-for-sleep/
https://health.clevelandclinic.org/what-is-the-ideal-sleeping-temperature-for-my-bedroom/

Yea, there's a lot that suggests 60-67 is the ideal temperature for inducing all kinds of good stuff. The cool thing about the ChiliCube system is I could set mine at 90 and she could set hers at 60 if we had those types of desires. And even with two comforters I am still comfortable at 65 degrees.

Wow this looks great! I take sleep seriously and need below 70F to sleep well. With a wood stove going in the winter that sits below our bedroom it's not always easy to keep our bedroom cool enough.

I just looked it up on Amazon and the new and improved version can go under the mattress. That wouldn't work on our current king sized bed with dresser drawers underneath. I assume you can still sleep on top of the new one? What does it feel like sleeping on top of it??

Probably a dumb question but if you pack it up, could you travel with it? I would probably get a single for travel due to size. Maybe stick it in the bike box? I did not sleep at all the days leading up and the night before doing IM Copenhagen. It was the hottest summer ever on record and our city apartment didn't have AC (it's not really needed during a normal summer). It was rough lacking that much sleep (first world Ironman problem I know) and we vowed we'll never rent a place that doesn't have AC. And I know you'd need a converter as Europe has different volts than NA.

I fully acknowledge my "condition" :)

even my lab with her nice fluffy fur coat(I don't know why my black lab has such a thick coat, but she does) prefers to sleep on top of a functioning electric blanket. I trust dogs more than people so plllllfft

Under the mattress? Not sure how the Chili would do that... Basically, the pad sits on top of your mattress and under the sheet. We run the tubes that connect the Cube to the Pad kind of behind our headboard and then over to the side of the room where the Cube sits. Ideally, the Cube sits by a return air vent so as to dispel the heat generated via the Cube's cooling process (ironic a bit, yes), but overall I do not notice any heat exhaust. The unit actually emits a sound that I personally like, a sort of mild "hum" that is effective and being good white noise.

You don't notice the pad at all. If you really focus, you can feel the little tubes that run through the Chili Pad, but it's not something that stands out as you sleep. We have a Cariloha mattress, which has a "memory" top layer and the Pad doesn't infringe on that in any way.

Not a dumb question at all. I make fun of my wife constantly but we do travel with it. One of the reasons I'm happy we got 2 Twin XLs (as opposed to 1 King system) is that we can take one off for travel. For big races, including Kona, we did travel with it. And by we I mean she, because I wasn't racing and therefore didn't deserve the luxury of temperature controlled sleep. What was kind of amusing is on the way back from Kona (we traveled with the bike in a Hen House, we checked one other large suitcase, and I carried on a carry on suitcase + backpacks, purse etc) the TSA agent was really studying the ChiliCube in depth (it was in my carry-on suitcase with the Normatec control unit - we don't travel lightly for races...) until they finally asked "What is this thing?!" I said it was a mattress air conditioning unit, somewhat jokingly, and their minds were basically blown...

Thanks so much for the post! Appreciate the information!

That's hilarious about the TSA agents! And great to know you travel with it!

It's weird that I can race OK in the heat but I need it to be more on the frosty side for sleeping. Always been like that for me.

Honestly if Chili made a slimmed down version of the Cube and Pad it would probably sell like hotcakes. You can travel with the Cube and Twin XL pad easy enough, but it does take up an entire carry on, pretty much.

I had the chili pad when it originally came out. I had many issues with the units and they all eventually stopped functioning altogether. This was years ago. They obviously still have durability issues.

They definitely do. No question there. Our 2 units have been back...3 times? In 2.5 years. Once was definitely my fault, although they treated it as a warranty. I haven't had to pay for any service, yet. Just shipping once or twice to Chili.

That - to me - is a no question "worth it still" verdict. It's a tiny little air conditioner, it's probably going to have hardware issues if it "only" costs $500 as I'm sure some parts are made cheaply to come up with that price point.

I got this marketing email from Chili and thought it was funny that they had FINALLY gotten a testimonial from a triathlete. The "triathlon star" Klodian Mitri (who posts on ST occasionally) has espoused the benefits of the units.

We got an Ooler at some point last year, and it is a superior product to the Chili Cube. A definite step forward. All in, we have 3 chili cube units and 1 ooler. We could not live without them.

OMG I think you literally are making me order one of these. I saw them and balked at the $500 price tag, but honestly, if it works, that's easily worth it to someone like me that already has difficulty sleeping. Great review, thanks.

And yes, I also tried the Bedjet a few years ago. Total piece of junk!!! (Returned it - left a bad review, and expectedly as with 'scam' reviews, even though the last review before mine was from several months prior, 10 5-star reviews of the Bedjet with no details and no quality, immediately appeared to offset and bury my comment. Avoid!)

I'm gonna buy one. Seriously!

Did you go in for the chiliPAD blanket as well? The 15 lbs temp-controlled blanket? Or can I pass on that? (These things are expensive, but I'm willing to invest if it's good!)

We have only ever used the mattress cooling units. I was turned off by the fact that the blanket requires a separate ChiliCube/Ooler unit (I believe). I also don't think it's necessary for sleeping, as the Chili/Ooler is extremely effective at keeping a steady temperature in between your sheets.

Also, as I said in my rebirth post, the Ooler is a significantly improved unit and is probably worth the extra money.

Not really a triathlon “star” but appreciate the sentiment. Just a big fan of the product. If anyone is interested - there’s a discount code to make it slightly more affordable. I don’t F around when it comes to sleep 👌🏼

Mitri20 for 20% off chiliPAD
Mitri15 for 15% off OOLER
Mitri10 for 10% off chiliBLANKET

I was just quoting their description of your endorsement. Glad to see they finally hooked up with someone in endurance sports that isn't Ben Greenfield.
