Now with that out of the way.
The ChiliCube / ChiliPad is potentially the best purchase you could EVER make for your sleep. I became aware of this "type" of product (basically a mattress cooling pad) a couple of years ago when we moved to the desert. Keeping your AC set below 70 during the summer months is just murder on your wallet. The ideal sleeping temperature is 65. How do we make up for this discrepancy? Especially when you are a competitive athlete, sleep is probably the most important thing you're not doing right. It's always taken for granted. I've always assumed I was a good sleeper; I got 8 hours a night on average and rarely woke up during the night and felt like my body temperature was normal.
My spouse, on the other hand, did not. When we moved to AZ, it was a struggle to NOT set the thermostat below 70. I didn't want to because I didn't want to pay for that decrease in temperature (and by me pay I mean she pays, she's the boss), so I started looking around for something to either cool the room itself (inefficient) or cool the sleeper. I was listening to an interview that a pro athlete did and he was mentioning that he takes sleep very seriously: room darkening shades (we already do that), mattress cooler, etc. So I texted him and asked which product he used and he mentioned the ChiliCube.
I started reading about this thing, and the only thing that bothered me was the price: $500 for a "Twin XL" (basically half of a king mattress). But I ended up ordering one for my wife's birthday, and I continue to pat myself on the back for this gift ever since.
When she started using it, she described it as "life altering." I assumed this was hyperbole, and carried on about my normal business. I didn't need one, so I just didn't worry about it. She sleeps hot, I do not. Why waste money on something I won't "need?"
Fast forward a few months, I am cleaning her unit and it drops off the table. The screen no longer works. Shit. She was on a work trip, and I was worried for my life's safety if she got back and the so-called "life altering" ChiliCube wasn't working. So I hurriedly contacted Chili (based in Mooresville, NC) and got a repair/service request going but realized that was going to be a 2 week turnaround. So I panic-ordered another Twin XL unit from Amazon and got it the day she was getting back from her work trip. No harm, no foul (except to my wallet).
Two weeks go by and we get the serviced unit back. I think, I'll just install this on my side and see what it's like.
Life altering.
I mean that in the most serious way that I can. I recently had a two week period where the Cube wasn't working and I was getting hot at night, sweating, etc. Got it fixed and the past two nights have been absolutely glorious. Keeping your "cocoon" at 65 degrees all night (even in the winter) is - to be frank - spectacular. It is absolutely and completely worth the cost and the occasional headaches (Chili has a great product, but maintenance and service seems to be troublesome at times).
It makes you sleep sooooooo much better. If you've at all been on the fence about something like this, you should strongly consider making the purchase. It pays for itself both through altering the way you use AC at night, and in the quality of your sleep/recovery.
FWIW, I also have a BedJet, it sucks.
