13 week Strength Training Program- Sign up!
Update 1/2/19- Happy New Years Folks! The first week of workouts is now posted! Please look on youtube/ google before asking me how to do an exercise. Chances are its already there.

Here is the link to the program

Hey ST Peeps,

I've noticed that most endurance athletes are relatively clueless when it comes to lifting weights. I see a lot of goofy movements and almost always high repetitions, low weight rep schemes. This style might work for a few weeks but then you will plateau quickly. What I believe is missing is a program that properly progresses athletes through multiple phases of training.

I have developed a 13 week strength training program for endurance athletes and I am looking for a couple participants (guinea pigs) that would like to get stronger this off season.

I am looking for runners, triathletes, or cyclists that can commit 2x per week to strength training. There will be NO financial charge however you must be willing to provide me feedback on workouts I provided and also document the weight you lift.

The program is 2x per week (1 upper, 1 lower) and follows a traditional periodization model. 4 weeks of endurance/general preparedness, recovery, 4 weeks of strength building, recovery, and 3 weeks of power building. I can promise that if you follow the program, you will get stronger and more resilient for the 2019 season

About me... I have my degree in Exercise Physiology and hold certifications in Strength and Conditioning (NSCA-CSCS), Functional Movement Screening (FMS), and USA Triathlon (USAT). As an athlete I have qualified for Kona and 70.3 WCs

If you are interested please tell me a little bit about yourself and provide me with a gmail address that I can share the workouts with you.

Looking forward to helping y'all!
Trainer Dave

Does one need access to a gym with weights or will a simple home gym work?

I might be interested as well. How long do the sessions typically take? Do you need access to a full gym for each workout?

This strength and power phases of the training cycle will require heavier weights so a gym is recommended.

You probably have a great foundation and will benefit from the periodization this program provides

Good luck. If you see form that could hurt someone by all means let them know. Hope your work goes well.

On the reps, many endurance athletes weights directly determines their success. Low reps adds muscular strength and.....weight.

I’d look better gaining 5 to 10 lbs upper body muscle. But, given my power ceiling that’s a total no-go for me and many others.

Just a “why” you may see that among us.

I am going to try and join in with this as well. I'm guessing you don't need me to send an email as you have the workouts posted on page 1. Also, I am located in Columbus Ohio, do you coach a Tri group locally?

A fellow Ohioian! Hello welcome to the program. I am not currently involved with any specific team. I just moved here a couple months ago. Are you part of a club?

No, not part of a club. I have two small children, so my workout windows are only good for solo training right now.

Done with week 1. So far so good. A lot of different exercises I've never done, so see how they play a roll in the long term.
Thanks again

Would love to see everyone's progress posted once a week or so. I already lift regularly and have put on 10 pounds or so in the last year or so, and it's helped my endurance performance immensely. Those of us AG'ers need to realize that being super skinny is not the end-all be-all and that strength is far more important than most of us think.

Have upper scheduled for tonight. Did lower on Monday and still slightly sore in glutes/hamstrings. Apparently I'm not used to all the squats/lunges. Warm up seemed slightly long but I imagine this will shorten as I get more comfortable with the exercises and don't have to stop, look them up, etc. Overall looking forward to tonight's workout and seeing how this develops.

Warm up should take around 15 minutes. During this phase I know people are shaking off the rest and need to spend more time warming up. You will get more efficient as you practice it more

Couple comments from week 2 upper...

- Found it nearly impossible to match/increase my push up with a strict 3 sec down, 1 second up. Is this how it should be? I can knock out the 20% over, but not when trying to do 3 down/1 up...
- Also, how my gym is laid out the appropriate/following gym etiquette area for planking is no where near the area for lat pull downing. If it was possible to group weight/cable machine exercises together and the other stationary/body-weight together it would be easier to get it all done.

other than that so far so good

Thanks for that feedback. For the push ups, the eccentrics plus an increase in volume might have been a bit ambitious. I am sure other people felt the same way so I made an edit

For you specific gym layout, you should take the planks and other ab movements and move them to their own set at the very end. I'd rather you get them done at the end of the workout if your gym doesn't allow for a smooth transition

Week 3 is posted. We are going to work on eccentrics this week. You will be sore from doing eccentrics. Focus on controlled movement and high quality reps. If you have any questions, please comment or email me!

Have fun!

Hey Crew, sorry about the delay. Week 6 is now posted. We are going into Strength phase. Rep schemes will drop into 6-8 and rest/ recover after each set will increase. Take the extra rest and allow your muscles to recover and lift heavy.

Stay safe, practice good form, and always use a spotter!

As usual you can always email me with any questions

Best,
Trainer Dave
