I hope you are right about her taking the win. That would be awesome. Thanks for the great content. The swim shots and underwater footage are also helpful from a technical angle.

Watching her run it seems like she is losing some mechanicall leverage from over flexible swimmer knees and also swimmer ankles. She's almost kicks her legs out straight ahead before flexing a bit on impact, but is forced into some extra vertical displacement because of the straighter leg and losing the mechanical leverage during the compression phase from a more "bent knee"...almost the "seat is too high" version of running. But maybe an optical illusion from the video angle, however the guy running beside her has more of a conventional bent knee angle. Just looking at that, this appears to be some of the delta between her marathon and say Rinnie or Daniela who get a bit more quad and glute engagement in their run stride (at least visually).

Great video! Wouldn't call it an upset if Lucy Charles wins - Ryf is superstrong but so is Lucy. If anyone else wins, it would be an upset. OK maybe not if Rinny were to win (who may also be stronger than she has ever been...).

Love the videos, but any consideration for some different genres of music? Maybe you've added some rock, but I've only ever heard electronic music.

Videos were great last year, they are good this year. But the pattern has become predictable. Start video with interview, hit a few key points then go into electric music with several minutes of slo-mo and action shots of random SBR. Then wrap up rest of video with interview.

I liked your videos a lot last year but this year it just seems like a rehash. Last year I watched all, this year I've watched a couple.

I know you have talent and all I am saying is that you are more creative than what you are currently putting out.

I don’t have an opinion on the music either way, but I’m watching the videos to listen to what the athlete has to say. Not watch tons of video of them working out to music. I’d prefer if when showing the workouts that you just continue with their commentary for the most part and just use a little music here and there to transition from one answer to the next. I find myself skipping through the 2-3 minutes of just video to music in these.

Casey is a great example to pull from.

He does TONS of time lapses, but the serve a point, a transition of time in the story.

While Talbots videos are not necessarily stories (They would be much better if they were) he could use the training shots/drone shots as transitions of the interview. Going from one question to the next or one topic to the other, insert highlight or drone between.

This is where triathlon as a whole IMO goes so wrong of catching viewership. To be honest IMO it's really not that fun watching people train. I have no desire to watch Gomez come out of the water in a speedo like I'm watching Baywatch.

Not really sure why you're hating on the formula, different videographers have a specific formula that works.

The music is fine, mostly up beat...and wth would put rock as an overlay here?

For me the formula doesn't work. Its predictable and the slo-mo and 1/3 to 1/2 of the video being just highlights of them working out isn't entertaining or inspiring.

The interviews are okay, but they generally say the same thing as they do in other interviews, so if I see an interview by Sarah True somewhere else first I know what she will say in Talbots interview.

He is not finding the stories and he can. That's just my .02 cents.

I feel his talents are more creative than this or maybe my expectations are out of line.

It works but that doesn't mean its everyones style. I agree that the action sequences are getting played out. He has an awesome opportunity to sit down with these pros and to only see a few minutes of the interview is a bummer.

The fact that people took the time to share thoughts with you is a compliment. You don’t have to take the advice, but should appreciate that you have an audience that cares about the content.

FWIW, Mitchelton Scott’s Backstage Pass is an example of how to include a range of music genre into this type of production. Not that I could come close to doing anything similar.

Thank you for sharing your videos with us. Getting to know these athletes is an important part of engaging in the sport. I appreciate having access to them through your content.

Psst I'll let you in on a little secret- I think you would likely be completely underwhelmed by the "stories" on the pros as much as you seem underwhelmed by the way Talbot is showcasing them now.....Pros aren't any different than the average AG'er, just ride their bike and run a little faster.

(ETA: So that's not a knock on Talbot- more that the background story on Lucy Charles or Sanders or Gomez or Frodo isn't as earth shatteringly exciting as you may seem to think there is).

I also have already recorded some footage but not going to publish. To much negative feedback.

I usually spend 15 - 20 mins depending on the sport they do. My interviews are never longer than 8 mins.

I am just going to enjoy the island and watch the race instead of doing any more videos. So totally not kidding.

Talbot, your videos are great! I don't think anyone can dispute that, especially given that you're booked solid and get tons of views!

Don't let a few errant comments on an anonymous internet board affect your plans and management of your time. It's super hard to do great work like you do, but it's really easy to be an armchair critic, kinda like NBA superfans willing bash on Lebron James even when he drags his teams to the finals every year singlehandedly.

I don't see anyone else pumping out high quality super cutting-edge preKona videos with the big guns like you do - it's definitely your A+ calling card. Keep up the good work, take it to heart that there are farrrrr more appreciate folks out here, even if there are a few criticisms lobbed from the galley. (Lots of which I don't agree with, but I'm not a videographer.)

Funny, how people hated the song you put on the Ryf video but I was all into the beat...now the lyrics of that song were weird when I listened to it which I see why you're just pulling instrumentals. IRT cancelling shoots, there's 200k views vs maybe a few hundred negative comments, this is where I say put in the ear plugs and stop listening to the noise and get after it.

I love Lucy and have enjoyed meeting her in person. Personally I am not super fond of these videos. The goofy guy at the end is a but much for me (I may be too old to appreciate). I watched this one because everyone said it was so good. It seemed to me that there was an awful lot of filler like all of the slow motion butterfly. I would like to hear more from her. Obviously based on the other comments I may be in the minority, but those are my thoughts.

Do you realize that consumer feedback is incredibly important to any business? Just look around and consider how much money big business pays to obtain, evaluate and respond to market feedback.

The “critics” on this thread are Talbot’s most valuable contributors. He doesn’t need to respond with changes, but is fortunate to have access to his audience.

Shutting down the production in response to a few “negative reviews”, during peak interest, is naive, egocentric and foolish. It is also ironic in the sense there is another thread on the front page debating the value of the pro field. Taking away what little exposure these athletes have will certainly not help their economic interests.

Please go on! I'm a scientists and the feedback you get on reviews is usually gruelling. The only way to deal with it is taking a positive attitude towards it. You can't please everyone, but what you get as feedback are things some people don't like, or what they think you can improve upon.
Do you, as an artist, want your videos to be recognized by the music? Some might not like, but it could also work for others that it rings a bell, and they know there is a Talbot Cox video coming, and they know they like those.
Would a story line improve your videos? Would the suggestion how to build a story line work to build a story line? If people want a storyline, how could I build that? Etc.

Pulitzer price books aren't written in one go, nobel price writers didn't win their nobel price based on their first book. I'm sure you would agree that your videos now are much better than when you just started. And in a few years time you'll realize that your videos then are much better than they are now.

I love your videos, but I caught myself zoning out in some of the shots with highlights of training. Maybe because I've seen so many of your videos in a short time, but I wondered if those shots could be used to also convey some other information, or if additional information could be presented with them.

Keep up the good work! My personal favorite Kona video so far was Sarah True. I never saw an interview or anything with, but she shot right to my top of favorite triathlete women!

Talbot, how bout collaborating with some other folks, like Cupcakes with Cal. Your creative style mixed with his interviewing skills would be something refreshing. Maybe you and Taren could collaborate on some good-natured prank videos (post-race)? Or you and Taren walk the streets and ask random funny questions (a'la Jimmy Kimmel)?

Maybe spend an episode on a MOP'er who has an interesting story, or is semi-famous? Or hi-light a first time Kona AG'er who is like a deer in headlights w/ unbridled enthusiasm and get the race build up from their perspective.

Just some ideas of different kinds of content to sprinkle in.

Not sure if you run into any rights issues, but that would be cool.

I enjoy your work! I think everyone had different expectations of what these videos were going to be about. Some probably were thinking you were going do what you did with Sanders, Jorgenson, Rinny, etc. More in depth insights on nutrition, day to day life, family, friends etc. I would think that there is no way to do that with each video coming out daily plus the number of athletes you've got on your list.

Personally either format would have worked for me. Whether you would have chosen 2 athletes to follow for the whole week or gotten as many in as many athletes as you could with these shorter interviews. I do like seeing the personalities of all the different athletes though so maybe would prefer what you are doing now.

I assume these are on the lighter side because you just don't have the time to sit down and interview these people for 4 hrs trying to get every piece of info out of them as possible. Short interview to get a good idea on what the athlete is about and then some action shootings. Back home to get it all edited and then rinse repeat for the next day.

Hold the phone...in my house...Talbot is on a much higher and better level than Taren. Please none of that junk por favor.

This is one of the ways a sport can grow... people get to know the stars as people, feel invested in them, you become a fan and form an alliance and that is how interest grows. A shame if we don't get any more of these because of the small number of pillocks on ST who can't eat the salty soup with a smile (not that I'm necessarily comparing Talbot's choice of EDM with salty soup, your understand).

So the odd thing here is the parallel where you seem to not take opinions about your posts very well. I find that interesting. If you meant to have a positive influence then that doesn't seem to be going well, I think we can agree? So if the important thing is the content and producer then maybe have a think and try and find common ground (or just back out gracefully).

Did you listen to the interview? Pretty clear why Bob had him on. I mean the guy is the leading content creator for Pro's and clearly, Bob has great admiration for what he's doing as a fellow 'media guy' in Kona. I think he totally deserved the moment with Bob, and it was clearly cherished by Talbot.

I think it's because his "little" videos of the current pro contenders is why everyone in the industry is taking notice and thus an appearance on the show w Bob is fairly warranted. It's his "little" videos that allow pros and thus sponsors of said pros to get out there every single video.....in the same reason why at the start of every Breakfast w Bob show he gives 20s to the start of his show calling out every show sponsor. That's how you make in roads with new fans, new products, new sponsors.

I'm surprised you don't see/recognize that, or maybe you don't think he's doing much with his "little" videos.

Another thing to think about...BwB did 65, repeat 65 interviews....He's now become the media "car wash" of Kona. Every pro and every industry/tri legend is going to get on there, have their 12 min pleasantry interview and move on. It's almost a rite of passage now, you can't not do BwB. So when you have to fill up 65 slots, you are then able to do some interviews on more than just the top 10 pros in the race.

So just for fun I just went back and counted how many BWB interviews there were last year. 50 pre-race, and 9 post race (8 athletes, 1 w/Chris Guillemet of Velofix-Sponsor activation yo!). For pre-race that's increase of 30%.

Having had a LOT of interaction with many pros through the years with my photography, the key thing that gets them excited in having one work for them is FREE! I just yesterday had another request for free images. While he's riding a wave now, the road to paying bills is not in triathlon as I've never seen a cheaper group of athletes, sponsors, magazines and vendors. Good luck to Talbott and maybe he'll get a free lunch or an overnight stay, but sadly he'll end up used and tossed aside. Hopefully he can use these to springboard to a place that will reward him for his motivation and hard work.

I did not cancel the series lol. I just fulfilled my contracts 10 Videos and canceled my last 2 videos to enjoy the island and make another video on Tim and Lionel that were both posted after I made that statement. (On their channels)

My job is kind of feeling out the athletes as well. Cam was so busy when I chatted with him. He seemed not to keen to make a video. (I think he accepted too much media and also was not riding his bike the day we had planned to shoot *Thursday*). Which if I published a video of Cam and him not riding the bike people would have just cried like little babies. The last thing I want to do is push an athlete to make a video or do something out of their way. I have never done that nor plan to do that. That's why most of the pros trust me and allow me to come in and follow them for the day. Beth and Luke were staying out at the 4 seasons (40 min drive) also doing separate things/workouts on Friday so logistically would have been hard to make a video. Plus its pretty stressful the day before their race. I was staying in the same house as Tim O'Donnell. It made sense to just make another one with him as I was already driving him to bike check-in anyway.

Taking criticism is a good thing. After I got hated on for drone shots I shot my next video with Lucy without a single drone shot. As far as music choice this is a hard topic. I have tried to use different music and just don't feel comfortable. Not only that but finding music is about a 2-3 hour process (per video). All my music was preselected in the weeks leading up to Kona. I did not really have time to find new music. Also, a lot of people kept sending my like popular rock and roll and pop music (ACDC lol). I don't think they understand you can't use copyrighted music. (Youtube will flag your video and take it down or mute all audio) This is something I look to explore and change for next year.

Interview style videos. My videos are not about a freaking interview. If you're looking for interviews go watch Breakfast with Bob, or the 700 other interviews and podcast the athletes are on. These athletes time is valuable. My goal for my videos is to simply record them training and mix it up with music for people to watch while they're on the trainer for the next few years. I don't like to sit down with the athletes and interview them on questions they have already answered 700 times. Like I said if you're looking to find out what Ryf has to say about Lucy Charles and the swim go watch her interviews on different channels. It's not that hard to find. I find that questions like that are not relevant after race day. October 13th, 2018. I try to ask questions that when someone watches the video 3 years down the road they will figure out something about the athlete.

With that being said I appreciate everyone watching this year. I would have liked to try and covered more athletes but found my self-fulfilling to much contract work that actually pays the bills lol. This is not a free endeavor. I usually take about a 3-4k bath every year on this but find it paying off by picking up new clients throughout the year. Plus who would not pay that much money to go to the world championships and hang out with the pros and take pics! :)

I will definitely be back. Hoping to get some bigger sponsorship $$ (for the series) and not only focus on the series next year in Kona but also shoot a "Pre Kona Series". Athletes training in August and September on their lead up to Kona In their hometowns / Training Camps.

Once again I appreciate all feedback good and bad! I did not even know this post spiraled out of hand. haha, I was in Kona on race week the last thing I was doing is checking ST haha. I document most of the good and bad comments in my notes on my computer for future videos. I still have 3 more videos to release. 2 on Tim and Rinnys Channel and a music mix up on mine of just all training from the week. Just wanted to say, my masters swim squad got a good understanding of my "1 goggle drill" from your underwater viewpoint of Lucy swimming like in the middle of your video. I have them work on that drill weekly, and I finally had the perfect "real" footage of it being applied in swimming that I easily could find (yes I'm sure there are 100's of videos on youtube to find it, i just never looked nor liked the context of if for my master swimmers).

So kudos for the coverage and different video formats.

You are exactly right Talbot, I don't watch them for the interviews, I watch them for the training footage. Can't tell you how many times i've watched the same videos over and over while on the trainer. Keep it up.
