Fitter Radio podcast was just talking about that. Bevan thought it would have to be a different date, like December. Said no way September would work. Would Ironman be willing to alter the schedule?

I have PM'd you.

There is a lot of talk about this September date. The proposal is NOT for September. The lake will be much warmer :)

Is that when Ruapehu goes off because Taupo lake is never warmer than just above freezing.

Who is proposing December? That date wouldn’t work well in WA because of IMWA. I wouldn’t have thought it would be good for Northern Hemisphere folk would it?

That's why it's called a World Championships. I personally like the idea of it moving around locations, and with that comes the need to change times of year. Imagine an IM WC at the end of the Southern Hemisphere summer, rather than the end of winter, Cameron Brown would of been a multiple podium finisher and likely have been World Champion (more than once I'd say).

Sits well with me.

It used to be held in November so a date change would not be unprecedented. I am simply curious whether Dec would be the new time frame going forward or just a one off date for Taupo.

Well if it is going to be in December, they should make it so that it is the weekend before Xmas....then Northern Hemisphere people can just make it one long vacation in NZ after the race. Making it 2-3 weeks out from Xmas and you'll have less Northern Hemisphere people making it as they have to take 2 vacations very close to each other. Sep in Taupo would be really really really really bad from a cold perspective!

I love, love, love, love Taupo... it was my first IM. Amazing *venue*, but as a course it's not suited for a World Championships... too flat.

OTOH, the chip seal is a real challenge!

It is going to be held the last weekend of November, 2020.

We have a rather famous (in NZ) bike race which is usually held that weekend, Cycle Challenge has agreed to move their dates 1 week, to the beginning of December. So 1 week apart which would make it worthwhile staying in TaupÅ an extra week. The race does 1 full lap around Lake TaupÅ.

There will not be a 70.3 in December.

The course has not been announced, however, it will not be the usual 70.3 'Broadlands' course. I'm not at liberty to say where it'll be but it is more 'sporting' than the usual course (on the bike).

It is very exciting for TaupÅ.

Out towards Kinloch maybe..?

Will the normal December 2019 race be the usual current course, or will they trial run the new course?

Curious about the $19 million dollar economic impact.

Seems like a big influx for 5,000 athletes (and their families) over the course of a week.

If it’s close to true, then IM has every right to negotiate for free accommodations, road closures, zoning accommodations, etc.... their take is only a fraction of the local economy’s.

Yanks will be in from a shock when they ride on the rough roads.

But agree NZ is beautiful.

Long way to travel for a half ironman.

I’d suggest an Aussie 70.3. About 3 weeks out from the Taupo race would be a nice link.

US athlete here who did IMNZ this year and had heard and expected to be riding some pretty rough roads. I remember maybe one short stretch where I thought the road was in bad shape, and most of the rest seemed fine to me. Not totally smooth, but definitely not the terrible ride I was expecting. Absolutely loved the race and New Zealand in general.

I also had an aluminum bike

Not being negative. Objectively, the date will impact US athletes and who chooses to take a slot. No one is complaining about Nice either. It has the highest slot take rate for any 70.3 WC slot.

Agreed. Although it would bleed over into the next week so that would be a concern for people with families since kids would be back to school the day after the race.

We haven't been told yet, and as everyone is up in Kona at the mo won't find out until they're back here in TaupÅ in a couple weeks.

The town is absolutely buzzing about it. The volunteers really get behind IMNZ, that's what makes it so special, there are people already on social media groups here trying to volunteer for all manner of things, to be in the medical tent, aid stations etc. The town is PUMPED about it.

The first five years the WC was in Clearwater it was around ~10 Nov. This will extend the season for some athletes but give a couple more weeks for pros to recover from Kona and sharpen for the 70.3. And with the new pro qualifying system, some may now go to IMAZ or IMCOZ and try to secure a spot while the big boys and girls are in Taupo.

We had planned on going to Nice next year anyway, so hoping to tack on a week in Portugal (Cascais 70.3 28th Sept 2019) now to get qualification early for 2020, that way can be focussed on our own athletes in Taupo 2019 rather than worrying about qualification.

Any more news on when the qualifying period will be? Looking at the 2019 races on the website, Dun Laoghaire (August 25th) says it's offering qualifying slots to Nice but Zell am See (September 1) just says "slots to the IM 70.3 World Championship". Do we think that's likely to be the cutoff point between Nice and TaupÅ? Or am I just missing some important part of the qualifying process (entirely possible)?

In general, I understood the cutoff for the WC of that year is around the end of June. 70.3 Canada already lists 2020 slots, so I'm surprised Dun Laoghaire is for Nice. Probably because it's an EU based race

Congrats! Do you know if the qualifying window will be extended two months to account for the later WC date? If they hold to 6 wks lead time then qualifying would extend into early Oct 2020.

We haven't been told yet, and as everyone is up in Kona at the mo won't find out until they're back here in TaupÅ in a couple weeks.

The fact that Nice is in September limits the cut-off between those two... Perhaps some Europeans races closer to nice may offer later than the usual late June/early July cut-off but I doubt much races will go beyond the usual.

Any idea what this is...? Number of slots in the local races?

It doesn't get easier, you just get slower

My suggestion is that's $815 to buy your way onto the startline....
