I want to develop a simple and cost-effective hardware product (with paired app, inevitably), that would offer navigational assistance to trail runners in a way that's not currently available - at least at the price point I'm imagining.

If anyone has experience designing a product from the ground up, or being closely involved in the process, I'd love to pick your brain.
