I’m likely going to be accompanying my son to Oberstdorf in the first week of May where he will be participating in a figure skating event. I am thinking of bringing my road bike. Just wondering if anyone in the forum has any familiarity with this area. Is there good road cycling there? Is it easy for a visitor to get around ? (I’m from Canada and have no knowledge of German language, or of the area) Is the weather conducive in May? I would be grateful for any advice.

Hi there in CA, I did googlefu with the german words Oberstdorf Radsport (cycling sport) and Rennrad (road bike) and found a LBS that rents trekking and mountain bikes there .. http://www.heckmair.de ..
Oberstdorf is in the most beautiful regions we have here in Germany and in Mai there is a chance for beautiful weather, too. 15° to 20° Celsius are possible but in the mountains it can stay cold ..
edit: it's a holiday area and they'll make it very easy to get around with road & mountain bikes ..

Check out the immenstadt Allgau halfdistance race that bike course is ace and not that far from obertsdorf. That will give you a good route

I live about 80Km from Oberstdorf. Windschatten described it perfectly.

If you rent a car, you're a three hours drive away from the Umbrailpass and Stelvio... I don't know if the summit is snowfree at that time...

Thanks all, for taking the time to provide such helpful responses. If all Germans are as helpful as you guys, then I won’t have any trouble! I think I will get in contact with that bike shop before I go and make sure they are open and see if they have gravel bikes to rent at that time. I’ll plan to bring rainwear and look for routes on flat roads where it’s warmer. The trip to the stelvio sounds tempting, I hadn’t thought of that! However, I suspect it will still be covered in snow, as it usually is during the Giro. Then I got to thinking perhaps instead of a three hour car ride I could take a three hour plane ride to Mallorca! Sadly, I don’t think that’s do-able, due to obligations, but one can dream...

If you end up going to Mallorca, the climb to Lluc and the climb to cap Formentor our great rides!. I've been told that Sa Calobra is also a great ride!
