Longest center of pad reach?
What's the longest center of pad reach you have fit someone to successfully?

Also, if you want to share your most outlierish position that you still signed off on. Bonus points for pictures.

I had some pad x,y #s of 590, 640 for a tall male pro the other day. He's 6'2", long in torso, and likes to ride a little stretched. We came up with 565 as his "narrow limit" if he was equipment limited.

I also fit 6'3" male pro a few months back to 610, 590. I thought this was a little extreme on drop (20cm) and we came up a bit, but both of these guys were adamant that longer felt better.

The kicker is my position, which also had a pad reach close to 580, 17cm of drop, and I'm only 5'11" with a 78.5cm seat height on 155 cranks. Not as a drive by gloat, but just to give you an idea of why I think this wasn't bad... I rode that position to the VA state record 40k TT (51 low), and the fastest bike split award at AG national in 2012, WITH a PR run off the bike.

So I have both a good bit of confidence when a certain subset of riders wants go pretty long, but also some trepidation when I put pro's in positions that their bike sponsor terms "crazy". Interested in your input.

 Hi all,

Can I jump into this with a request for some more data, if it's available, on which bikes these guys actually ride, frame and size? The interest is to look at 'forward weight offset' simply the difference of pad reach to front wheel centre. This plays into stability and handling which when you're trying to hold that position on a gusty, cross windy sort of day or a tricky steep downhill is not so easy as it is on the fit bike. We're working on a new Tri bike concept that would allow the bike to custom fit and also provide a choice within a range around that fit for front wheel centre and so 'forward weight offset'. The goal is to take the fit of the rider first then match the bike underneath them with a consideration to their level of riding ability/confidence taken into account on the handling geometry set up. Running some real data comparisons with outliers and their current rides would be a big help in refining that concept.

Thanks,
Richard.

wow, can't say that I've gotten numbers that far out, most people in the Midwest tend to be wider than they are longer lol
Here are my guys:
Richard has a pad R of 560 and a pad S of 638. This picture may not be his final position as recorded.

Here are a few others from my records:
Anton: pad R = 465, pad S = 665
Roman: Pad R = 460 pad S = 650
Tony: Pad R = 490, pad S = 665

I do also have a number of Condors in my Road category, plus one exceptionally tall dude for whom only custom will work. Dave, you've met me, you know how tall I am! At 5'2" I nearly had to stand on a box to measure this guy out, his inseam was 94cm and his torso is 90cm.

Agree that there is a 'certain subset of riders', but the single improvement I've found with almost every rider is in opening up the torso to unrestrict breathing. After you've got an acceptable anterior pelvic tilt, lengthening the thoracic cage allows the floating ribs to open up with the diaphragm pressure.

The armpad height becomes a balance point, and may not be as 'low' as one would assume.

Would love to know what sponsor thinks a position is 'crazy'? I mean, we're not talking Graham Obree here, if your guy is 6' plus and has the torso too boot, it makes sense.

Appreciate your insight, Anne. Not going to name names on the manufacturer.

thanks Dave.

In regards pro sponsor, let me rephrase to say not who exactly said it, but what was their definition of crazy. what could a fitter possibly do to set up a bike that would 'worry' a sponsor. besides a steer tube extender an 90mm of spacers under the stem hahaha,
Are they worried about how their brand is perceived in how the athlete photographs?

That we needed a position literally 2 inches (5cm) longer than their longest reach on their biggest bike.

I don’t know who is more obnoxious with the posting of a single non-representative ancient photo: you with your blurry photo from a race 7 years ago or EricMPRO in his P5 at A2.

Let’s see what you look like right now on your fit bike pedaling. I want to see the perfection.

I don't have any decent pictures of my old position. One video, but I went lower on both, longer and narrower on bars from .
