Hanging on a coat rack in the laundry room.

I'm going to make some sort of hanger for all of them, but nothing spectacular.

Even with my race friends, no one cares about trophies and medals in my circle so I have a relatively muted display. I have a nice display case for the big medals and trophies that sits in the pain cave that only I see. I have a big plastic tote housing the rest of the medals. Happy with both.

Several years ago I donated a couple of boxes of probably over a hundred various medals from triathlons, run races, bike races/rides, and various other events to a charity that repurposes them for kids with cancer.

Any that I've kept (very few) are in a box somewhere. The only ones that are out are my first IM and first Kona. Those are in my home office in the shadow box thingy they sell at the expo.

These days though I try not to even get a medal at all. If I'm still mentally functioning I politely decline it. If for some reason I end up with one, I usually give it off to a random kid in the post race area. They love it.

Most of mine are in a shoe box in the closet, because it would look gawdy to display them. I have a few medals out, mainly the ones with bottle opener functions, so that when people are over, they can crack a beer open quickly...

I wear them. 24/7.

But seriously, I wonder how may of the cool folks who throw them in the sock draw and the like have Ironman Tattoos or bumper stickers.

I don't in anyway consider myself one of the "cool folks" because I don't hang onto my medals. I just don't like a bunch of clutter. Drives my wife and kids crazy because I'm always getting rid of stuff. I do have a tattoo but no bumper sticker. Does a license plate frame count? Technically it's not on my car though, it's on my old car that my 17 year old drives.

To a certain extend, I also feel a little gaudy to display them but I feel like I've earned them and they are special to me.

At the end of each race I always look forward to getting the finisher medal and now they end up all tangled up on a lamp...

Only one I display is about 20lbs of polished limestone. I kind of want it off my shelf, its a pyramid shape, so if it ever falls, it will most likely kill the person it lands on and I have young kids.

Best trophies I have received though are the practical ones. For example, I received a custom made cutting board saying 1st place finisher. I use it daily when making salads or other dishes.

The rest of mine go in a shoebox in the utility room, I'm hoping my kids will enjoy looking at them as they get older.

When only had a couple, I hung them over the door knob and they jangled every time I opened or closed it, which was super annoying

When I got a few more, I hung them on one of those racks that hang over the closet door, but that was STILL too noisy for D'Wife's liking

Now they live in a left-over swag bag, hanging in the back corner of the closet, out of the way & out of sight [& sound]

I would consider giving them away, but D'Kid has Sharpied on the backs things like "Proud of You Dad" or "Great Job Dad" or something like that

GOTTA keep those

Yep, mine are sitting in a corner of my workshop in an old plastic bag. There's probably a few others that never made their way there, hiding in the car glove compartment, a kit bag, or a jacket pocket. I'd rather not get medals at all. What are they for? Am I the only one who thinks it's weird that there's now a noticeable trend of events advertising themselves on Facebook and elsewhere on the basis of how nice their medal is?

thanks I'll try that. My wife will love you, she's trying to find a home for my remaining motocross trophies from a million years ago. On a related note, just last weekend I gave back the plaques that our local triathlon company uses (TBF Racing), so, they can simply put on the appropriate plate for races in the future. I peeled off the ones that were on there and have a very small and manageable stack of plates. My wife is/was trying to figure out something creative to do with them.

My big "keeper" is the coin I got for KQ last summer. It's not much larger than an old silver dollar. Not sure how I'd display it. so, it gathers dust like other stuff; for now.

To answer your specific question and not be snarky about it ;)

I have two medal hangers on the wall in a corner of my bedroom.

1. Allied Medal Hanger - Cityscape - Male Figure (18" wide with 3 hang bars) - Holds my running race medals in a layered fashion. I change the length of the medal ribbon with supplied clips.

2. My oldest daughter (12) made me a medal hanger out of wood and brass hooks that says 'Work Hard Play Hard Tri Hard' - This one only has my Tri medals on it as well as my race bibs.

I don't feel it's gawdy, it's not in a public space and there's a story for each one. Some for shit performances, some for being on the podium. I came to this race game late in life (a tool for a 60lb weight loss journey) and displaying the medals is a daily motivator for me that shows how far I've come and how far I still want to go.

We have a high shelf along three walls of the pain cave and that has assorted nicer awards on it from mountain bike racing. The medals/bibs from Long Course and XTERRA Worlds are in shadow boxes in the living room. At work I have my 'wall of shame' behind my desk that has bibs/medals from races that have special meaning to me and above that is a shelf with assorted nicer awards/memorabilia. Other race bibs/medals hang from the shelf or are in a pile on another shelf waiting to be hung up; my husband has a similar set up in his office.

My husband took the plaques from our old motocross/cross country trophies and mounted them a display boards along with a picture from one of those races. He did the same thing with the plaques from his old skateboard trophies and mounted those on one of his old boards.

Maybe it's: 80s, 90s & 2000s, and 2010s? I haven't looked at the older ones lately to see where the split is

My wife and I keep most of them in a basket tucked on a low shelf, I guess we'll donate those someday but the ones were most proud of we hang on 'competing' racks (hidden around a corner so it's not obvious to guests). She has two Boston medals so she is currently winning.

If I won the race - the bib goes on the wall in my basement and the award on a shelf next to my desk in the basement. (its a "sort of" finished basement)

A few "important to me" age group awards are also on the shelf.

If the award was a mug - Its in the kitchen for coffee (or dirty on my desk).

Finisher medals are in a box along with the rest of the awards.

My plan is to podium at Kona. The trophy is a Koa wood bowl which would make for nice place to store all my medals. The problem is I've been trying to do this for a long time and now have a lot of medals.
But that plan may not be ever be executed so I put all my trophies on shelf in our living room. The shelf is very crowded, plaques are stacked and most of the trophies are very cheap looking. I do this more to piss off my wife rather than to show off. I'm very proud of the bobblehead trophy I won for taking 2nd in my age group at JerseyMan.

I hang my Ironman medals in my pain cave. They’re on display for me and my family to look back at memories of races and trips that we made together. Those races and trips meant something to us, otherwise we wouldn’t have spent time and hard earned money on them. It’s good to remember where you started and where you’re at.

I find it hilarious when others think it’s shameful to keep or display medals at home. I’m sure most of these folks do rock a tattoo and bumper sticker, neither of which I have or display.

Serious question for you or whomever: why do you keep the bibs??? It has never even occurred to me to keep those and hence they were all recycled. Medals, ribbons, plaques, and trophies are on a shelf and desk in the corner of my bedroom, and/or in a drawer in my dresser. However, I do have a couple of awards from my civilian and military careers on the mantle over the fireplace in my living room.

Each to their own - to display or not to display.

I love my medals (all finisher medals, never even podiumed), and they certainly bring back memories so I'm keeping them. My daughter made me a display rack which is cool, so that's where they're staying!

My bibs are all tucked away in a bag - any examples of cool ways to display/store these?

I generally recycle all of mine. I don't really need them to enjoy triathlons and in fact I won't take another finisher metal to make sure all those behind me who may want one more than me get theirs.

That's generous. I am certain the organizers produce more than they need (at least up to number of registered participants). Its hard to predict how many people shows up and how many people finish the races.

I've never seen a participant give up their finisher medal (at least in the finisher area all athletes are generally still wearing their medals).

As noted in an earlier post, I only have a few taped to my wall. Basically, My 1'st win was the West Point Duathlon. It was also my son's 1'st ever "adult" duathlon. When I'm sitting at my desk and look over at my wall, it brings a smile to my face remembering that day. Another one is #1 and was from a 5k race my son put on to raise money for his Eagle Scout Project. I won that race as well and he raised enough money to fund his project.

You seem to have taken offence at the fact that others don't share your reverence for the medals, which is unfortunate but I think you've misread the attitude behind it which is unfortunate. I can only speak for myself but I from what I've read I suspect most others feel the same:

I do NOT think it's shameful to keep or display medals at home. I just don't personally see much point. The events were important to me, but the medals are not. If the medals are part of the memory for you and thus of significant value, I have no intention of being derogatory about that. I can respect your preferences without sharing them.

The fact you assume those who don't value or display medals would have a tattoo or bumper sticker seems very odd to me - and leads me to think you've misunderstand something. Surely if someone doesn't see the point in putting one type of physical reminder on display, there's a good chance it goes for others too? Why would you assume otherwise? Sorry, I don't follow your logic.
If I was to assume anything it would be that those who get a tattoo would be very likely to also have medals on display!
Personally, I have medals in a bag as mentioned previously and I wouldn't dream of getting a tattoo or using a bumper sticker. But then I have zero tattoos and zero bumper stickers and that's not likely to change.

Incidentally, I do have a couple of IM mugs and pint glasses. I don't mind them since they serve a purpose besides what's written on them. They're nice to have but I'm not going to get upset if they get broken. Do whatever you like!

A colleague made me a medal tree out of metal. It actually looks more like a shrub. My wife and I put our finisher's medals on that. We do that for a few reasons - one is that we didn't know about the charity (great idea) at the time we had the tree made, and the other is that it is a way for us to display to our young children the value and accomplishment of physical activity.

I have only one tri AG award (medal), which I have in a shadowbox with the swim cap and a photo of me crossing the finish. This was my first race after being off for a year due to a TBI suffered in a race, so it had extra significance to me. I have lots of running awards, and those find their way to a closet or the trash.

Attacking this day with enthusiasm unknown to mankind.

my participation medals and podium placings are in various "junk" boxes or kids' toy drawers, but after seeing some of the setups in this thread, i may be motivated to pull them together and create a bit of my own lame shrine in the pain cave. It's funny when i used to race and place well i didnt really care about medals and trophies, but years later, now that I'm middle of the pack and struggle to get a half hour run in, I kind of appreciate it a bit more and could use the motivation. Nothing shameful about putting together your own display - at the end of the day, that is all we have as a tangible to represent all the time away from family and money spent on this crazy sport!

Nice!

Nothing wrong with saving and displaying medals & bibs, especially those from personally significant (and memorable) events.

Serious question for you or whomever: why do you keep the bibs???.

I won that race as well and he raised enough money to fund his project.[/quote]
Thanks, I've never won a race OA (came in 2nd OA once but that's the closest i've managed) but i could see how a person might want to save those bibs.

my wife knew how much running Boston marathon meant to me, so framed a picture, Boston bib, and the medal as a gift.. that hangs in my study. Similar to tallswimmer's display.
I liked that well enough that I asked for a similar frame with my 11 Two Oceans medals, and pictures from the first run age 18, to the last one age 30. One medal was stolen so 11 not 12..

No tri medals on display anywhere, have a couple in the sock drawer.. bibs from the two Worlds I went to, and a pacer bib from Leadville 100, hang over the sweaty gear hooks in the basement.

I'm not exactly "young" either but do you not have your logbook entries for those races??? (Surely you've been keeping a logbook all these years???) Those logbook entries are my records of the races in which i did not win anything; i have placed in my AG a number of times so do have some plaques/trophies and medals/ribbons (swimming), but only from maybe 1/3 of the 150 or so tri races, running races, and Masters swim meets that i've done. For the other 2/3, the logbook is the memory book. I have about 15 notebooks similar to your description, documenting my training for the past 39 yrs. Started my log on 1 Nov 1978 with notebook paper and pen and it has stayed paper and pen all these years. :)

Jigsy, I am not sure what other word you would use, but the implicit direction of it would be negative and not approving. I am not sure why when one human tries to do something nice for other humans that the person often gets torn down and receives disapproval from others. It seems like it is our human nature and frankly it baffles me.

I love the suggestions others made about donating metals and I will do that for the ones I and my daughters have around. But I do forego all finishers medals now because I have seen folks not get medals who want one at the end of the race, the folks whose goal to finish is to finish and the finishing medal means a lot to them. I also believe in reduce, reuse recycle with reduce being even better than reuse or recycle and so if I reduce my own consumption, that is my way of treading a little lighter on the planet. Yes it is just one medal here and there, but I take this approach consistently enough that it adds up.

I didn't set out to offend, so apologies if I did. I suppose my point was that your post came over as somewhat 'holier than thou' - can you not see that?

I look forward to my (finisher only) medals, and they are part of the experience for me, as is coming home the bib and adding it to the pile. I also like the t-shirts too. I don't do much with the medals themselves, but feel that I may take some satisfaction from them once I can no longer take part in such events.

I reduce my own footprint in many ways, but after 4/6/13+ hours of hard slog, I'm getting a medal!

Thanks for the reply. I did think about that and didn't want it being holier than thou, but also I did want to spread the idea that I had gotten from someone else of not getting your finisher medal if it doesn't mean much to them because sometimes folks come through the finish and they really want a finisher medal but none are left and I never want that to happen to someone.

But not meaning something to one person should have no bearing on what it means to another. I appreciate your thoughts on it!

I don’t display medals. I’m not a fan of finishers’ medals at all. I don’t do much with trophies, either. I’ve put a couple plaques on the wall of my office but that’s it. I don’t dare display any awards at the house. My family members are neither impressed nor very supportive of my tri habit.

Its funny, when I was trying to finish my first IM it was a big deal; like I was less of a person because I dnf'ed my first try. Alway thought about what I would do with the medal; its own mantle, framed in my office at work, etc. I used to think it about it all the time. Same with a college degree. I used to see those Alumni license plates and think I'd have on someday (grew up in foster care, the mentality was we weren't good enough for it). Those dumb objects drove me more than I care to admit.

After getting both, the medal is in storage and I never bought the Alumni plate.

I suppose that's how a lot of Olympic Medalists feel. All they think about is that medal while they train, and when they get it the object loses its significance.

I think that ties in to what many come to realize. The process and the work is something we enjoy. I used to really build and focus everything to these monumental singular points; whether that was a national TT, a big IM, Kona, etc. After each event I felt this huge sense of letdown, but at some point it dawned on me that as much as I love racing, it is an infrequent treat. All of my great memories of racing are tied to those early morning bricks and hard sessions that I build on every day. Those are what I enjoy so much.

My wife is probably 'indifferent' to my endurance sports habit at best. But she does buy me those stainless steel medal holders as gifts from time to time. I hang them in my workout room and then hang the medals on them. I'll take the counter stance and say that I do like the medals, they are good souvenirs that don't take up a lot of space and help me to remember a fun experience. If we were going to get rid of useless things I'd rather not get a crappy bag and t-shirt from each race I do before I'd get rid of the medals.

You laugh, but to some people this is a serious suggestion. In boot camp (long ago MCRD SD Plt 1054 1989), we had a fellow recruit ask if he could wear his Eagle Scout medal on his uniform. The DI jokingly told him "You go ahead and do that." Sure enough on our next Alphas inspection, there he stood with hi Eagle Scout medal pinned to his chest. The best part was that the DIs didn't say anything and let the Series Commander come across it. I couldn't see faces, but the exchange was priceless!

That's a great display, and a great idea.

I have a few medals and awards that are worth displaying. I usually toss my masters swimming medals into a drawer, because there are medals for every event at a meet. Same with medals from local 5k-10k road races. I have my IM finisher medals somewhere on a display that 140triwife made, and that includes her medals as well. It's a device that has several hooks from which to hang medals. I often take off the swimming medals to make space for other awards.

My favorite awards and memorabilia are the unique or more meaningful ones, and I display those in different places. There is an Open Water race I used to do that has awards that are in the shape of a turtle, cut from sheet metal. Those are fun. My 2007 Boston poster and bib are in a frame, as well as my first IM, and those used to be in my office. I have a few awards from my NCAA career, but those are more than half a lifetime ago, so time to box those up. Aside from all that, I don't really display my awards. My wife has her medal, bib, and a few pictures of her Ironman in a frame.

I know a few people who are "medal-chasers." We probably all do. They enter obscure races and haul in the medals.

My military medals are in my sock drawer; I think all my old Ironman bibs are in a folder (along with the bracelets) in the drawer below that, and my finisher medals are a bag of worms in the drawer below that. I obviously need to get organised.

I keep mine in a zip lock bag somewhere (includes 11 IM medals, all 6 Marathon Majors, including 6 star, and about 100 others)

I received one of those medal hangers once for free, a really nice one with the IRONMAN branding on. I would feel like a tool putting that up anywhere that can be seen, nerveless my wife would never let me display that thing. I will sell it to you for half off if you want.

Keep the memories in your head, post a few social media pics, and spare everyone else the gaudy display of medals that no one cares about.

I usually try to find a kid at the event on the verge of a meltdown because he's bored out of his mind after being dragged to the event by his parents. Giving them an award seems to make them smile and forget about their misery for a while. It's a win-win, because it's that much less clutter around the house for me.

I'm not really that bothered by teh medals, most of them just got given to the kids to play with or put in draws. Then my wife bought me a medal hanger for Chrissy and a box with all my medals in, she'd collected them all. It does look quite cool with them all hung up, each one has a different story! More of an opportunity for me to remisince on past races or a point of discussion for friends rather than it being a boastful thing.

The moving van delivered our stuff yesterday. There have been things in boxes for years. We had some boxes in garage, then a storage unit when the new apartment was too small.

Going through a random box today, I found my 2007 Boston finisher medal! I hadn’t seen it in years! I thought it was lost. I was a total dork tonight and wore it around. I’m struck by how small it is, even compared to things like Swimming medals from individual races at regional masters meets. But, as we all like to say, size doesn’t matter, it’s the memory that counts.

My wife said “it’s so small.” That’s what she said.
