100 Runs 100 Days 2017-2018 Challenge Thread: Dec 15-Mar 23
Quote | Reply

I'm copying last year's thread to get things rolling as I am kind of swamped at work right now, but will update this with any specifics for this year later. Same rules, same format, same goals. We're on to year 12

The last few years we have had 500+ athletes from all over the world. Invite your friends and training partners. The more the better. Thanks to Slowman for accommodating us and hosting this virtual training camp on their website at no cost !!!

On Dec 15th we'll start the 2017-18 edition of the 100 runs in 100 day challenge, commonly known as 100/100. The thing has evolved somewhat over the past few years, due to and contrary to popular demand. The basic unit that counts as a run is 30 minutes.

The goal of this entire challenge is to lay down a solid run base by doing volume through frequency. The goal of the challenge actually is not to randomly be doing a bunch of short runs, although some in the past may have chosen to. The goal really is to increase your overall mileage which will hopefully result in better performances next year as long as you don't go overboard and injury yourself. Frequency is the carrot to get you overall mileage, but don't end up using it to get injured!

The runs can be outdoors or on a treadmill, but it must be running (no water running, no elliptical trainer...). Walking does not count...there must be two feet off the ground at some point in every stride (the difference between race walking and running) and there must be forward motion so 30 minutes of jumping jacks will not count either :-) :-) :-).

DO'S AND DON'TS

  1. You can take days off
  2. You can do days with more than one run (doubles)
  3. You can and likely should take rest days
  4. You get no credit for going longer than 30 minute wrt number of runs, however it will help your distance totals. Over time, many of your runs will be in excess of 30 minutes.
  5. If you go fast, it will show up in your total distance over the challenge in less time and the speedsters get to beat the crap out of each other.
  6. You can go as slow as you want provided both feet leave the ground on every stride
  7. Listen to your body if you need to take a day off. Don't get too sucked into what the other geeks on the standings are doing (who am I kidding? Talking to a bunch a type A tri geeks)
  8. By all means, use the overall standing as a motivator to push you up a level, but don't put yourself in the injury/hurt locker in the middle of winter
  9. Don't sprint out of the gate in the first 3 weeks....easiest way to get injured...start slow....perhaps take your aggregate mileage over the last 3 years and divide that total by 156 to get a gauge for what your average weeks for the first 4-6 weeks should look like before you ramp up
  10. If you make it through 10 weeks (70 days), pour it on in the final month when your body and mind can take it.
WHAT COUNTS AS A DOUBLE RUN?

For a run to count as a double, it must be separated by at least 1 hour. I have to pick a duration to separate 2 runs and it can't be 1 minute or 5 minutes, and putting 1 hour in between means that I will allow you to count a run-swim-run, run-bike-run, run-wts-run, run-XC ski-run, run-McDonalds-run as 2 sessions as long as the thing in between lasts for at least 1 hour (be it 40K on the bike, or a session at the donut shop).

11 years ago _EH_, Jana and I put down 100 days in a row of running 30 min or more with ZERO rest days. Not really recommended. The last few years we have had approximately 50 or more hit 100 runs in 100 days, but that's really not for everyone (nor should it be).

WHAT ARE THE VARIOUS LEVELS

While some might go for 100 runs, the reality is that unless you are already running 4-6 hours per week, this is not a realistic goal. If you did over 2500K of running last year, you're probably good to go to attack the full 100 (assuming you have no injuries)

For most a realistic goal is to start at Bronze club pace (or less) and then see how things go.

  1. Platinum Club = 100 runs in 100 days (March 24th)
  2. Gold Club = 90 runs in 100 runs in days
  3. Silver Club = 80 runs in 100 runs in days
  4. Bronze = 70 runs in 100 runs in days
It is great training for anyone doing a spring marathon or an early season triathlon, and you'll be shocked by how quickly you accumulate mileage, all without getting injured...because the focus is keeping them short and aerobic. By all means feel free to run longer than 30 minutes, but the main goal here is to get you out the door, 5-7 times per week, especially given that the weather is generally shitty for riding in many parts of the Northern Hemisphere.

QUESTION ABOUT RUNS SHORTER THAN 30 MINUTES

The goal is to encourage people to run as much as possible. Sometimes, life gets in the way. We have lives outside sport.Something is better than nothing. So if you do 2 runs shorter than 30 minutes in one day (ex 20+15), you can count the total as 1 run, but beyond that, you can't keep adding up incremental amounts to count for additional runs. For example, a 50 minute run and 10 minute run in one day won't count as 2 runs and nor will 20+20+20. They will both count as one 60 minute run (you can add your short run amount to your large run amount to get full mileage credit).

So basically let's say you do a 15 minute run covering 3K. You can't enter this as a "complete run" for your "club status", however, if you do many of these over the winter, they all add up to more base, so what you CAN do is add these 15 minutes in your entry for your previous run...so if your previous run was 45 minutes, and 9K, just put it in as 60 minutes and 12K and take some partial credit for it.

However, we just added a fairly major change to this for 2015-16 to encourage people a bit more. What we will allow is twice per week have two days where 15 min counts provided you make up the time the NEXT day....read below:

New in 2015-16 was an allowance for 2x per week minimum run of 15 minutes which must be followed up by 45 run the next day. A 15 min run earlier in the day, followed by a 45 min run later in the day does not count for 2 runs in that day, it still counts as the usual 1 run of 60 minutes. The reason for this is that the minimum on 2 days per week of 15 min run is being instituted to assist people in not over doing mileage on days when perhaps a short jog or transition run off the bike or swim is all they should really be doing in the context of an overall triathlon program"
SIGN UP AND USING THE SLOWTWITCH.COM TRAINING LOG
1. Go to log.slowtwitch.com
2. Sign up for a training log account if you don't already have one
3. Then go to http://log.slowtwitch.com/challenges/list
4. Look for the 2017-18 100 runs/100 days challenge and sign up for it, by clicking "enroll"
5. Now start entering your runs in the slowtwitch log. Make sure you only enter runs =>30 minutes as one entity. If you have a 20+15 day, enter it as one workout of 35 minute or it will not get rolled into the results sheet
6. Please ensure that you log a distance along with the time. If you don't know the distance, please try to estimate...this will also get you finely tuned to your pace at various times/distances...great for racing
7. Your runs will automatically get entered into the challenge results sheet with everyone else
8. From the challenges home page, click on the link to go to the 100/100 challenge, which will allow you to view the results
9. Once click on this link you will end up at the results page. You can click on any of the column headers, and it will sort the sheet based on that category (frequency, time, distance, aerobic points.
10. Please note that you must be logged in to actually enter your data. You can't enter data without logging into your account (seems obvious...)
11. You should be able to sync to the ST log via Stava. Ericthebiking will brief us on that.

I'll update this post as other questions come up.

And as was the case in previous years, there is lots of tough love around here, but everyone means well. If you think I/we might be hard nosed, let me just say, that offline, I get beaten up by even more hard core guys accusing me of making the challenge too "soft". So the rules are the rules (we had a discussion thread about that every year) They've been refined over the past few years and love them or hate them, they kind of work and out of respect to previous years' finishers, let's stick with what works OK.

Please put any questions on this thread. Better to put them here than send me PM's or emails, because they may not be answered n real time if sent directly to me, but if you post on this thread there are a bunch of guys and girls who will likely answer questions for your immediately. It's like being in a big training camp with a bunch of veterans. You don't need to ask the organizers all the questions. There are a bunch of vets who probably can provide much better insights than I can.

FINALLY: GOOD LUCK, PLAY SMART, TAKE REST, COME OUT THE OTHER SIDE INJURY FREE AND READY TO HAVE A PB YEAR IN 2018.

On my side, I am awaiting a disc surgery (some complications resulting in a crash at IM Switzerland 2011 affecting my walking, biking and running), but until the surgery, will be doing some shuffling around on my Woodway and hopefully some snowshoe running to compliment my daily dolphin tank swims.

Please post stories about your workouts, pictures from running days and chime in to motivate each other on this thread. Don't just log workouts and disappear. The community engagement is what its all about to keep one another motivated

What if my 30 minutes of running includes some physio mandated walk-breaks?

I want to use my 100 days to get back to running after not really running since March 2016 due to a knee injury. At 3/7 I'll get to around 40 and that will be my goal :-)

I hear what you are saying. Time the running part and if it adds up to 30 minutes, then that's 30 minutes of running. Read the rules above. Unfortunately walking does not count. If you get over 30 min, then great. If it is under 30 minutes the challenge results table won't pull in that run.

On day 1 of the 100/100 I will be closing off my 1200 km swim objective for the year...so at least it will be warm there. Will try to shuffle out 30 min either before or after the main dolphin set which is a planned 1000m swim TT of 50% fly 50% free. That's my main event for the year. Was hoping to get it done before 100/100 and gradually convert over to land mammal status, but I think I'll mainly be in dolphin mode this winter and shout at you guys from the sidelines.

I think I'm in. I've run just enough that 30min doesn't scare me anymore (oh that's painful to say/admit).

I'm aiming for 45 runs. I have goals and this might just be the accountability I need to FINALLY get back the semblance of fitness I used to have.

Yes, but only as one run per day.

Dev,
Super impressed w your (forced) swimming you have been doing. VERY NICE INDEED BROTHA... keep it up.
Im in on this 100 run BS and got a couple of my athletes in too. Run is always my weakness from a confidence standpoint and hopefully this will help. While I know it doesnt count, I ran yesterday and logged a track workout today! So I am two up already. HA.
Bring on the xmas cookies!
Merry Christmas Dev.

Thanks Dev for supporting this challenge, again. Two years ago I was around 50-ish Runs? Caught the flu at the end. Last year I nailed 70. This year I've run pretty consistently, closing in on around 1,000 miles, and shooting for high 80's.

If anyone is interested, I'm coupling this to my own personal weight loss challenge. I'll post my weight tomorrow.

Amazingly enough, I have been on the Rob Gray Ultraman World Champion high fat diet. This year is the least amount of total training I have done in around 20 years in terms of hours, but I have done a ton of swimming. Swimmers are "fat" right? Well that's what I thought, but with all the swimming and calories from good fats vs sugar, I am down to my 2006 Kona race weight which is my high school grad weight and have a better six pack at 52 vs at 18 or 19. I think this high fat stuff works....and probably the other thing that really helps is no really super long training...all my training days are in the 1-2.5 hour range. None of the 3-7 hour range stuff after which you invariably eat too much.

In any case back to the thread at hand. If I can remind you guys that it's 14ish weeks of grinding and pacing it out. Don't start with a virtual sprint in the next 10 days please.

This should have been covered in the airing of the grievances so that slowman could scrape up some sponsors....for now I suggest that slowman allocated 5% of ST subscription $$$ to the platinum club, Randmart will deliver a fistful for 100/100 challenge bills to the gold club, silver club can get a kick in the behind from their spouse/partner for blowing off family events, and bronze club well you're stuck wtih a virtual pat on the back from me, but only if you post on this thread after 50% of your workouts! That's about all we go around this challenge poorhouse.

Thanks Dev.

First time participant, from the sunny shores of Sydney, Australia. Aiming for a Bronze milestone, mainly through my daily commute to work (mix of bike and run from day to day). Got cracking this morning with 7kms into the city, a leisurely stroll to be honest after a torrid week at work. Can't wait to see what the next 99 days have in store for me!

Good luck everyone!

Hey Dev — I was able to log today’s workout by following a link to the log-in page. But I’m not seeing a link to get to the workout log-in page from, say, the home page, or the run page. Is there one?

Thanks for organizing, I got 1/100, so I’m gunning for platinum.

LOL....when I did the challenge the first year (2006) I "just ran" with a target of 10K per day but minimally 30 minutes. We could have just left the instructions with "just run 10K per day or minimally job 30 min"......but now, over 12 years, it seems every year, the instruction sheet gets longer and longer and longer as more questions have to be answered in the instructions.

So here we are.

But you are an old school player, so I will give the 80's tough love instructions, "Cadet, just put your combat boots on, get your rucksack and rifle and run 5 loops around the base and come back when you are done....that should be around 10K"

This would have been my 7th year in the challenge but unfortunately I will be on the sidelines until at least January 1. I've been out with plantar fasciitis since September. This makes me sad because I love the 100/100 challenge, it's a great way to set up a spring marathon.
Best wishes to all the challengers.

Something is wonky with the leaderboard. I'm in 43rd place and I have 1 run logged. I should be at least above the zero people. This is my one day where I have a chance to be near the top and it is busted.

...it seems to be sorting ranking by the order we all signed up for the challenge and not by the count (even though it looks like it is supposed to be sorted by count).

first year doing the challenge, hoping to break 80.
I started a bit early, and today was 13 runs of the last 12 days. It will be a little adjustment though, because about 3x a week, I do and 'easy 3' run, which will now need to bump up to 3.5ish.

Hey I just noticed this as well. The new SQL method is causing the order by to be ignored, so it's stuck in signup order. I'm working on this today and you should vault up to your proper place shortly. Stand by!!!

In the meantime I will enjoy my very short day in the sun. :-D

Hey Mikey, welcome, no, you did everything right. However, >I< did something wrong, that is, I had the new leaderboard checking for duration GREATER THAN 1800 seconds (30 minutes exactly), and not GREATER THAN OR EQUAL TO. So your 30 minutes precisely logged workout was dropped, along with 4 others. Sorry! I fixed it.

Yeah the new leaderboard code was a little bit weird about how it did ordering. I've fixed it. Woohoo!

You do need to enroll in the challenge in order to be part of the leaderboard.

I clicked on the enroll button yesterday. Did it again now. Is something supposed to change? Is the enroll button supposed to go away or change color?

Well, yes. The request to enroll you will be submitted to the server, you will be enrolled, and the page will reload, showing instead of Enroll, a button titled "Leave".

Dev,

With regard to the following rule, when does the week start? Saturday? Sunday? Monday?

“New in 2015-16 was an allowance for 2x per week minimum run of 15 minutes which must be followed up by 45 run the next day. ”

Does the 15 minute run and 45 minute run need to be in the same week?

What Randmart said....honor rule....take any 7 day rolling interval and make sure in the last 7 days you did not go over....everyone good with that? I'd personally go with Mon-Sun as a fairly standard training week since typically we finish races on Sunday or major workouts on Sunday and then start the "new week"....that would be my common sense approach to a self policed rule set, but hey, no one is checking on ya, so do whatever you can look yourself in the mirror for. It's like my Epicman LP training day....it is supposed to be 3K swim 180K bike 21K run, but if you want to course cut, use fins, dope, draft, use a built in motor, hop a non existent Lake Placid subway and cut the run course.....well, you can get the finisher medal too, as it sits in the bottom of the personal medal case that will get thrown out by your family when you die anyway, so really it's all about what we all want to do to get the achievement. So to sum it up, no one is checking on any of us and its a matter of what we do when the coach is not looking.

Not long ago, I posted the following

RandMart wrote:
I use two rules of thumb to keep myself in check: 1) the Alice Cooper/Warren Zevon guideline I posted earlier and 2) if you find yourself sneaking or covering up

By that token, knowing exactly how many miles I need to run to achieve a certain weekly/monthly goal, to maintain a streak or what have you [equivalent to #1 above], or going out for a 10 miler when D'Girls are still sleeping on a weekend morning but only admitting to a 5K [see #2] could be perceived as "a running problem"

I guess I could be considered an Endorphin Addict, and as I've said before: Endorphin Withdrawal is a terrible thing to experience, and horrible to watch

Today was kinda snowy, and when I dropped D'Kid off at work at 3PM, it really ramped up. It was the sort of snow here in South Jersey that stupid people do stupid things, and it would be stupid to be on the road more than you need to be, as that increases the odds that something stupid is gonna happen to you [and if something stupid happens to you & your car, D'Kid is stuck]

Still, I went to the gym, to get my workout in on the TM, because I didn't want to start 0-for-1

Anyway, I got in, flirted with the desk girl [as well as I could, anyway], did my miles, flirted with the desk girl again, got out, hit the supermarket & liquor store [flirted with my favorite counter girl], and got home in plenty of time to finish the rest of my "day-off" tasks - Xmas bows, lights, cleaning D'House for D'Wife's Xmas brunch Sunday

When I picked up D'Kid at 6PM she asked "How was the gym?"

"I didn't go" I lied "Too sloppy and I didn't want to leave you stuck"

I may have a problem

LOL...Mo Farah used a binary 30 min/10k theshold. It leaves him lots of time to jog around and do victory laps and qualify for the challenge thresholds.

and ... after years of absence, I return (hopefully) to 100/100. I've tried this three times before - made 100/100 one year, failed the other two and dropped out.

Back in 2004-2012, I was very active on ST and a very active racer. However, I've more or less given up organized training and racing for the last several years. Last winter my wife and I lived in our van in Europe (we're from Philadelphia), and she was on a build for the 50 mile trail championship in June. I did almost all her runs with her, all over southern Spain and parts of southern France. It was thrilling to see our weekly mileage climb, and to be able to run marathon+ distances without really thinking about it. It was also incredible to run in the Spanish coastal mountains, and also the French Alps near Grenoble (where we go stuck for a week). During April, We also did a couple of 50km trail races in the UK and one fell race in the Lake District there. The day after we flew back to the US, we ran 20 miles on a new (to us) trail on the edge of Philadelphia (Green Ribbon), and I barely noticed it. I like that sort of feeling.

Since then, however, my running has languished again. I'm bored with running near Philadelphia where I live. I also got a very nasty hip joint injury back in June (probably triggered by working on machines at the gym), and when this recurred about 5 weeks later, I just swore off any attempt to run again. However, I did do a little HIIT training at the gym and an occasional run here and there.

And now 100/100 is upon us again. My wife is doing it again, in preparation for her racing during 2018. She managed 100/100 back in 2011/2012. I thought I'd try it as a motivator. It might or might not work.

First day was hard ... I'm in Chicago, helping my daughter through major, major hip surgery (PAO). Went to the "fitness room" this morning because Chicago is a little cold (hello, Toronto!), but the only working treadmill was in use. Finally got to return to the unventilated hot box of a room at about 17:30 ... so hard to run on a treadmill without adequate ventilation, but got it done.

It's nice to be back, just hope I can stick it out. Goal: 100/100.

Super duper welcome back to the endurance junkie zone exploited by the 100/100 lifestyle mafia. Your runs in coastal Spain and in Grenoble are highly approved....just imagine you are running repeats up to the Fort in Grenoble in Philly.

I did "one repeat" up to that fort in Dec 2014 at o-dark-thirty, then ran down, showered, got on the TGV and arrived in Paris for an afternoon biz meeting and then staying in a hotel in the 13e Arondissement from where, I jogged to the practice track at Stade Charlety for some 400 repeats with some local French track stars showing me the heels of their spikes. That was an epic double day around business and travel. Man, I have to say I have lived an awesome set of endurance adventures for an amateur in this lifespan

Hah! Thanks Dev. You have indeed lived quite the life.

However, running up to the top (and I mean the top) of the hill where the fort is in Grenoble was perhaps the easiest run we did there. One day was a 26 mile self-directed trail marathon that featured just a mile in, a 2000' climb in 3 miles! We knew it would be steep but not that steep.

Trail running in Spain and France is just outstanding. The number of trails, along with the signage, really makes anything possible. Photos? Here are two highlights, the first from the "foothills" of the Spanish Pyrenees, the second from near Cabo de Gata, the very south-eastern corner of Spain.

Okay, I click on it a whole bunch of times and it finally changed to leave.

Thanks

These buttons, enroll / leave, invoke a one-line ajax request which is backed by a three-line bit of code on the back end. Whether there is an error or not, it reloads the page with javascript when it completes. If you did click on the button multiple times, and it did not reload any of those times, the request failed on your browser. Did you have javascript disabled, or were you on a really slow or unreliable connection, perhaps (e.g. cellular network with one bar sort of thing)? Were you using a mobile browser instead of a desktop one? Was there any kind of error in your browser's console?

I'm glad it finally worked for you, though.

-Eric

I am just trying to play by the rules. If the rules are a 15 minute run followed by a 45 minute run the following day counts, I will count it. Will the challenge software allow an individual to record a 15 minute run?

Not to stir any kind of pot here, but to restate from my side:

No. There is no such provision made. The challenge software picks up runs of 30 minutes minimum. If you are going to do 15 minutes and then 45 minutes, you're going to have to fudge your numbers (which in my mind is bad form).

Last year, if I ever needed to do the 15 minute/45 minute running I would just post both runs as 30 minute runs on separate days once I had completed both. A little harder now that things are integrated into Strava (if you do it that way) since I'm not sure if you're able to edit workouts on the Slowtwitch log that came in from Strava.

I hear you, but if the rules say it counts, it counts. It’s like the Electoral College. You may not like it, but if you’re running for President, you better understand the rules. Thanks for the explanation.

Thanks for getting us started again, Dev.

4th year for me. Hoping to get to 100 again. Not sure I got there last year (had some pesky injuries in Jan), but I've done it before. Will be a challenge with a new job in a new industry (longer hours, at least for now). Doubles might not happen often, so I'll need to be sure to get out there every day.

Boston training started Monday, so this is a well-timed challenge for me. Looking forward to following everyone's training and chasing the leaders.

Go run!

Thanks for playing along. Looks like we have Pauli Kiuru (8:14 Kona 93 or so) playing along for a few runs too as well as Scott Molina (89 Kona winner)....not sure if they are logging.

For day 2, what I did was 45 min snowshoe run. Snow was only around 10 cm deep with the firmness of the golf course underneath, so it was a "faster" snowshoe run. This was my first workout outdoors since back in August at the outdoor pool, as I have been mainly doing swims and weights and some treadmill shuffling. But doing out on snowshoes with the wide platform and soft surface, my disc issues are almost not a problem. In any case, did 5K with a bunch of hills. Was really nice to actually work out in nature for a change with sunlight. I just realized it is almost 4 months since I had any direct sunlight other than going from office to car and car to pool.

"I do 1 - 2 runs / week. One 3 km swim, one weight training session. Not much, but definitely better than nothibg. And yes - at least once a week stretching."

Should we send him back some old fashioned ST smack and tell him that Molina is running 7x per week, swimming 5x per week, and biking 1000x per week and he better get on the program ASAP?

day 2: 5.5 miles or so in 45 minutes on Chicago's Lakefront Trail. Stuff noticed en route: below-knee amputee runner, brick-sized block of ice, runner in a green top that I could not catch (should happen a lot, but actually doesn't), lots of sun, and the awesome dream-shaped downtown of Chicago, the best in North America (and perhaps, anywhere).

downtempo emotional caveat: running like this when you're hanging in a hotel room with your daughter whose hip has just been chiseled/sawn apart (peri-acetabular osteotomy) is ... different. This is her second hip to undergo a PAO and the best guess is that she will never run again. She was a very accomplished high school & college rower, but who knows what awaits her in the future. Cycling? Nothing?

I will head out for another round of snow shoe running today. My quads are totally sore from all the lifting, but my hip flexors are OK from all the dolphin kicking I have been doing in the pool. Even when I am "sprinting" on snowshoes, I am barely going at 9-10 kph, but then I need a shuffle jog. Yesterday only did 5K in 45 min. Today should be faster since I can run on my tracks from yesterday! I will be back on the treadmill shuffle on Monday. Minus 18C here, but bright sun.

I'm only doing the challenge to motivate myself to be consistent, but it still irks me when people don't follow the rules. Doing two 30 min runs in 1.5hours really shouldn't count. And doing it two days in a row is just sad.

If you are willing to cheat at a silly run challenge, what else are you willing to cheat at?

This is also the first year I've paid attention to the challenge, so maybe it's just par for the course?

I'm only aiming for 45 runs - so it really doesn't affect me.

Hey Dev, my first time ever in this challenge, guess I wasn't running very much even back a decade or so. But its been more than a few years since I did any type of running, so I'm pumped for this now, so thanks.

It is going to be a bit dicey as I'm starting out at 181lbs, so I will be doing most runs on the treadmill with my Hokas. Did #2 today, gonna try and do every other day(swimming on the days in-between), but I'm already super sore just from day 1, so will monitor the nigglies I'm feeling. Hopefully just big muscle soreness and I can strengthen all the little bits before I attempt any real type of pace. Gonna do a weight loss at the same time too, so hopefully a dozen pounds will feel better a month or two from now...

It is the last one on the list at the bottom. You have to be an ST forum member to use the log. The entire process should be sub 2 minutes. Since you posted on this thread, it means you are already an ST forum member, so you just have to click on the "enroll" tab above the 100/100 challenge

Strava chopped 10 seconds off my run. It is 30:04 on my garmin and in garminconnect, but 29:54 in Strava. I set up the auto sync so it isn't showing up in the challenge (because it is under 30:00). Is there anyway I can fix this? Or correct it in Strava?

Thanks!

When I click that link it takes me to the right page, but also logs me out. When I log in it I can see the log in page briefly, my pw manager fills everything in and I'm automatically taken to the start of the forum, when I click through to the site, or copy the url, I'm not logged in anymore.
When I did manage to get to the challenge page while logged in, nothing happens when I click 'enroll'. Using the latest version of firefox.

Just manually enter the run if you want credit. I don't think Ericthebiking can help you if Stava cut your run "short". Next time all you Strava guys to be "safe", just run a bit longer.

Strava will autopause your run whether you like it or not. So if you took a 30s pee break or whatever but left your garmin running (don't have autopause on), strava will see that you weren't moving and subtract that from your run.

Strangely, when you run on the treadmill it's the opposite. If you take a 5 min break in the middle of the run and pause your garmin, strava will add those 5 minutes onto your run and reduce your average pace.

Same here. I ran 30:04 (shown correctly on GC) and Strava conveniently shortened it to 29:59. I made no stops and am not sure why it does that. I'll just manually edit it once the sync with Strava is done.

I need David to get on here and shout at you guys and say, "stop spending so much time worrying about recording your runs and editing files......just friggin RUN LONGER rather than spending that time in front of a computer wondering what software is mucking up you recording" sheeeesh people, the challenge is about actually exercising vs recording exercising (think about the difference between the sale guy making money to actually make the company healthy vs the finance guy playing number shenanigans to report nice values to Wall Street)....the main thing is taking care of getting healthier/stronger.....not the recording!

OK rant mode off.

Today, I am putting in print that I WILL NOT run. My body will benefit from a break after two days of really hard hammering on snowshoes where my cardio, hip flexors and quads are screaming and I hardly get any "mileage" credit on this challenge...that's what you get for running with weights on your feet in quicksand.

The 100/100 challenge gods must look down upon those going for the bare minimum. Now, it's up to you whether or not you want to just do the bare minimum. Well, like Brian, for example, has 37 pieces of flair. And a terrific smile.

Hey, welcome! The easiest way to get to the challenges is to visit the training log home page, which is linked on the main ST page under "Training" -> "Training Log". This will take you to http://log.slowtwitch.com/ -- http://training.slowtwitch.com/ also works -- and from there it will automatically create your login and sign you in with your slowtwitch user ID.

From there, go to the challenges page and find the 100/100.

Thanks,

Hey TriStart! Are you logged into the training log? It should show "Welcome, TriStart" at the top right of the page. If so, the enroll button should work unless you have javascript turned off. When you click enroll, it should reload the page when the request comes back affirmatively from the server.

If you can't get in, PM me and I'll dig deeper. It should be pretty straightforward.

Hey sammie,

Strava reports two times for activities: the total (elapsed) time and the moving time. For now the log picks up the moving time. To be 100% sure that you get 30 minutes moving time you'd always want to go a little over.

Now, having said that, if I were you I'd just bump the workout in the log up to 30:04 in this case. That's really stupid and you shouldn't lose the run.

Thanks Eric, tried in Chrome and it did work there. I guess java in Firefox isn't switched on. Connected it to Strava and first 3 runs are in (did a 5k park run on Saturday but that took me less than 30 min, I would go over with the 1k warmup, but that was about 5 min before the start). Aiming for 70-80 runs.

What I do while watching college basketball on the treadmill is that I run for my 30 minutes, THEN keep going at least until the next commercial break/media time out, i.e., the first dead ball after 4-minute intervals (beyond the 16:00, 12:00, 8:00 and 4:00 minute mark of each half)

Could be treadmill set at 8.34 miles per hour...that should be 7:12 per mile. Not sure how you set it for 8:34 but that could be the average of two speeds or a few speeds between warmup, some sections at faster speed and then cooling down?

Not exactly sure how long it should take from the time I upload my workouts into Strava before they will show up in the log but so far I have had to go into my profile and click the "Synchronize Now" buttom each time. You are right, it is balmy still. We get -20°C usually in Jan-Feb.

Oulu is about 500 km north from Lahti. My name is also on the participants list for IM70.3 Lahti next summer.
So far I have been only running but there is still time to get things rolling.

5th day of the challenge. Still did only about 30 min run but these last two runs have been feeling ok and the flu is subsiding. Maybe next run will be somewhat longer. My biggest weakness over the years has been consistency so I try to moderate myself this time.

Well let's get Sir Daley Thompson out for a 100/100 run on Christmas day.....from LA 1984, when he on top of the track world (sorry Carl Lewis). Here he is and to his left Juergen Hingsen (I am probably the only one on this thread that remembers these guys) and Dave Steen (Canada, far right in image, eventually bronze at Seoul 1988)...LA coloseum Olympic Decathlon 1500m finish

Funny I was actually in the coliseum that day in 1984. He stopped running at the end of the 1500 because he wasn't going to break the world record.

I'm sure plenty of others remember Dev it was only the 80s !

I'm from the UK and that period was a golden age especially at middle distance with Ovett Coe, Cram and Elliott.

Coe vs Cram vs Ovett...just for the 100/100 track guys. I was a huge fan of those guys:

My 100/100 participation may be limited to this. I was doing some treadmill shuffling the last few months, but I think my disc/nerve has acted up again and I get these uncontrollable spasms that stop me dead in my next stride (imagine an uncontrollable calf cramp). I guess I am stuck back in the pool and just cheering you guys and doing core work and swimming until the surgeon cuts me open. This is really weird but since the original disc injury, I have gone through months of running decently, then stuck doing nothing at all for months and then things start working again and I can jog....oh well. Keep pushing guys!

After years of Slowtwitch inactivity (and falling off the triathlon bandwagon), it's great to be back. I'm at 10 runs in 8 days (I'm a day ahead of many of you in Japan), but heading to South Dakota tomorrow. Could be some ugly runs in some ugly weather ahead. I predict more than one run of 30:01 over the next 7 days.....

If I get out in some truly epic weather - which is always possible in SoDak - I'll post pictures.

Well I got #4 in 7 days in, my plan was never to run every day but every other one. Now at some point I will miss a day for whatever reason, or I will actually get fit enough to fill in some consecutive runs. But I built it in that I'm only shooting for a 30 to 50 run completion, that way I won't freak out, perhaps hit my goals, and be in a position to exceed them even..

All treadmill runs thus far, last one I put in a 1% grade, will bump it up as my HR gets fitter..

Any pics of Japan guy running in South Dakota yet?

Curse you Dev. :) No way I would have run on the treadmill this morning at Christmas if not for this 100/100 challenge.

But, because of this again this year, it does get me running on days I would have wussed out.

Hope you and your family had a great Christmas. Mine all ended up sick so our Christmas went out the door. Oh well.

Day 11 and just logged 12th run by running to Mom’s for holiday festivities. Brilliant, actually. It focused the family’s conversation around how bad running is for you and how I’ll regret it someday. A much healthier conversation than our normal fare. This challenge has so many benefits. Ta ta for now. Gotta run back home.

Yeah, running is bad for you like running is bad for the human race. Without running in case anyone did not notice this yet, the entire species would be extinct on account of not being able to run from predators or running to hunt food....but yeah, it MUST BE BAD, because you know, during evolutionary times, they just got in their SUV and drove to the grocery store to get shrink wrapped deer meat.....but whatever.

I did a few snowshoe runs the last few days. Today on Christmas I was breaking through knee deep snow and barely covered 10K in just sub 90 minutes, but my disc and nerve like the soft surface and wide platform and the zero pounding. Luckily my hip flexors and quads are conditioned from my 1200 km plus of swimming with a ton of dolphin kicking this year. Thanks for playing in the challenge guys. Merry Christmas and good health in 2018. Feels weird to type 2018 in that it felt weird to type 2000 back in 1999 and we're closing in on 1/5 of a century going by since then!

In my experience a lot of people sign up but they hate logging. Over the last 12 years I have talked to countless people who keep track on their own, but don't update the log here after a while. The main thing is we get people active. Of course better if they come on ST and log. Best is when they log and also participate in the thread....honestly if they don't log but run at participate in the thread I am still happy. I took some pics during my snowshoe run today with the intent of posting, but it was minus 15C and somewhere between my touching the frozen screen and the SD card, nothing got recorded....next time will keep the phone in a pocket in the front....the back pocket the snow just keeps filling up the pocket with the phone (that pocket must have had 2 lbs of snow in it by the time I pulled the phone out for pics today)!!!

It's obviously messed up. I think a few people have put the minutes in the hours field. I'm thinking of adding a data quality hook for "crazy average pace" on the slow side as well as the fast side to help encourage folks to fix them.

Yes, and also with the strava integration you'll get people who drive home, and people who record skiing as runs, etc.

Lol......+1 on this. My goal is to be in top 50% of the board (about 40-60 runs will cover). The caveat I use however is to toss out all the folks with zero runs and that tightens up the matrix a wee bit and makes the 50% cut line a little more challenging. So in my bizarre world, I need all the zero slugs to at least log one run and then go back to whatever it is they do........Carry on peeps!

Alright, finally got some meds yesterday. I had figured I had the flu, but tested negative for that and strep. They gave me an inhaler for bronchitis, antibiotics for sinusitis and some pills for my terrible cough. Feeling better this morning for sure, so I'm going to give it a go on the treadmill at lunch.

I need 45 miles in the next 5 days to hit 2,000 for 2017. I will die trying to make that happen lol.

Wasn't feeling to well yesterday and didn't run. Last night I spent most of time vomiting and shitting everything out I had inside me. Feeling better now but still a slight fever and haven't had any solid food today. I hope it will pass soon and I should be back on me feet for a run on Friday!

The upside is is that the weight gain from all the Christmas food is completely gone :D

Challenge going good so far. Think I'm 11 for 10. Had to slow things down a bunch because I went for a 50k run on day one or two, but had a hamstring flare up from having to out run a dog a week prior.
Major kudos to all the cold weather participants. South Florida is perfect for winter running, but we do pay for it all the other seasons.

When the snow is so pure and white you don't need a headlamp on the trails after dark..

Jingle bell, jingle bell, jingle bell run..

Sunsets along a trail past river and park..

..and post-run snow angels just for fun (at -16c/3f with -27c/-17f wind chill)

The challenge started on a scheduled rest day for me, but I've put in 14 runs in the 10 days since then - 6 in the 4 days over Christmas weekend. Should give me a bit of a cushion for my Friday rest days, but will likely continue with at least 1 double run day per week.

Sure happy both my mum and my husband bought me some new cold weather tights and pants - temps aren't predicted to rise above -10c/14f for the next 2 weeks.

My favorite run so far - 2.6 miles with my 6-year old son. We did a couple of shorter runs last week (1.2 miles, 1.75), but this is the first to hit 30 minutes of running. Total distance was probably 3 miles over 52 minutes, but only the running miles count in this house. No wussification rules!

I think we'll hold at this distance or less for a while, but it was nice to hit this milestone. Cheers!

Oh, and yeah, we live somewhere warm. :) Subjecting a young-un to bitterly cold running would probably be one of the quickest ways to turn them off to running for good.

Yesterday had to take a day off due to flu. Ran very easy on Tuesday even though I got the early symptoms of beginning illness. Wednesday felt slightly worse so I decided to take a day off. It was anyway a whole day of driving with my family back home from Christmas festivities. Today (Thursday) jogged for 30 min very easily and felt ok. I try to make up for the missed run when I am feeling completely normal again. The plan for the comming days is to continue taking it very easy, rest if feeling gets worse and otherwise just jog. Luckily I am spending this and the next week on a little holiday with the kids.

Hi Eric, after 3.5 years in triathlon I believe you are on to something with the 100/100 challenge and thanks to the Strava integration it is easy to execute. Thanks again for helping me in the process of becoming a better triathlete. Perhaps highlighting the how to connect in the challenge will help more people to use this great tool!
Also slowtwitch has been an invaluable and trustworthy source of information in the last years.
Happy New Year and All the Best to the team in 2018!

Yesterday was -5 F with a terrible wind-chill, so I drove an hour from my In-Laws to a Y in Cedar Rapids. Got my run in on their indoor track and added an hour swim to boot (really nice facility). Alas today's weather is every bit as bad and tomorrow will be far worse and I'm not sure I can repeat the trip to CR. Does running in place count?

Looks like I am out. I was wondering how they were all sick, but not me. Well, I have the flu now so no exercise for a while. Guess it is one way to break running when it is right,
rather than because I feel I have to. Made the 100/100 last year, but looks like not in the cards this year.

This flu is nasty stuff. Just hoping to get well enough to leave for Disneyland in 3 days.

Gotter done this morning with a nice 15 miler. I’m going to take tomorrow off to recovery a bit then hopefully be able to have a normal week next week with track, tempo and long runs back on target.

Also almost cracked back into the top 25 for distance even missing 7 straight days. I guess my new goal for this challenge is to get back into the top 10 for distance by the end of it.

Not as cold as your place, but to get my run done today I had to layer up with base turtleneck, fluffy hoodie, windbreaker, shorts, wool socks and hat, wind stopper pants and double layer gloves. No end to the cold in sight for at least the next ten days. Brrrrr.....

No coasting in running and no crying in baseball

Bought a Sole treadmill on Dec 12th... still waiting on delivery!! So yeah, I'm still running outside. 17 degrees here on Long Island, so not as cold as everywhere else -- but still cold! Bought a pair of the smartwool ski socks and boy do those socks really keep my feet warm.

Loving the Strava integration.

Hey crew, Happy New Year. Hopefully you have mega post hangover 100/100 induced self cleansing running till you drop on the agenda today. I took several days off running as the disc in my back was not behaving. I was able to do 5 super hard snowshoe runs (the wide platform of the snowshoes and the soft landing surface agrees with my nerve compression). So today I gave the treadmill a go, and was OK for shuffling around for 7K. My snowshoe runs were 60-90 min range, so legs are fine to go when the nerve behaves. Can't wait to get this surgery as it feels like it may offer a path back to a decent quality of life (which for me, means getting back to riding without leg spasms and jogging).

Keep trucking....day 18 almost done. Sorry I have not been that active. I have been working on starting a tech company so it's been an intense haul over the last 3+ months, so less ST time, more investor time LOL!

18-for-18 here. Nothing longer than 8 miles. Doing a modified BarryP plan and my back has held up well so far. No worse than pre Dec-15!

Q: What is five miles long, covered with feathers, smells like stale Budweiser & cigarettes, and has an asshole every ten feet?
A: The Mummers Parade

So, yesterday, I was casually watching The Mummers when D'Wife came down for breakfast around 11am

"Oh fuck!" she exclaimed "How cold is it?"
"I think they said it was around 10 degrees" I replied, not caring to double check with The Weather Channel
"They're fucking nuts, but I guess they're pretty well antifreezed"
"Yeah, alcohol will do that"
"So, didja run today?" she asked, after a pause
"Why would you ask me that? Did someone say they saw me or something?"
"No, it's just the kinda bullshit I'd expect from you, that's all"
"So?" I reconfirmed "No one posted anything about it then? You just kinda guessed I'd do that?"
"Yeah, since you're an idiot that way"
"Can't argue there" I agreed

Yeah, I did

Despite having no witnesses nor evidence either way, I will add that to the record

Sometimes it's good..

..and sometimes it's not.

Fortunately the noon New Year's Day run was mostly sunny with just a flurry at the end, as it was mere hours after I'd rolled into bed at 4am, drunk for the first time in a few years (luckily I don't get hangovers from rum). That second run, though, through a howling wind driving a blinding snow squall...still don't quite know how I convinced myself to do a cold water rinse on my legs during my shower after that one.

Happy New Year all!

Without this challenge I would have had less than half the miles I do now, so thanks for putting this together for us type A, goal setting types.

It finally got above zero today so I ran outside for the first time in about two weeks. Have suffered through the stomach flu, a chronic cough for two weeks and my treadmill shorting out any time I go faster than 7:54 pace. Spring can't come fast enough.

19 runs in 20 days so far. Had to take one day off last week due to flu. I think I will not hurry in getting that one missed run but will postpone it to some later date in February or March after I have built the mileage base.

17/19 (well 18/20 counting the run I'll do tonight :) I take one day off on purpose each week. So far I'm running 30mi/week and I'm cool with that. Mostly 30 min runs with a 45 tempo and 1h run on the weekend. I started adding 2-3 min this week to my 30 min runs and plan to increase every 2 weeks. I've been dealing with PF which seems to be clearing now and my previous mileage before the challenge was barely in the low 20s. If things go well I'll add another 30 min run later in the challenge. If I can run 40mi weeks by the end of this thing I'll be happy.

I ran outside in the snow today. Not exactly a hardship, it was above freezing and sunny.

I've fallen off my pace for runs - my goal was just to build some consistency, so nothing close to 100 runs. I'm really hoping I'll see some good fitness gains come spring (my pace was slow but my HR high today - snow makes everything harder).

Well I guess I'm done thinking about this challenge at all. Seems my desire for 2k in 2017, and running 48 miles in 5 days after 7 days off from being sick was a bad idea. I've got IT band issues now. So I guess it's time to start building bike fitness while I try and rehab this IT band.

I'm probably not going anywhere today; to sloppy to drive to the gym, and running outside isn't an option

Because ... remember Portland 2014?

Yeah, not a good start for me right now

Missing a bunch of runs early on, I can correct and get back on track/schedule easier than if we were further along in the challenge

Haven't missed a day, but today was the first "mind is willing, body is not" run. Planned a track session, ended up a grinding 5 miler. Felt awkward and uncoordinated.

I'm blaming that ridiculous 50 x 50 swim this morning. Or my back just wasn't rested enough. Probably a little bit of both.

I'm in this year for I think either my 4th or 5th time. I'm aiming for over 100 runs and I'm off to a good start. I ran outside Thurs in the blizzard and took a nice pic of my path through an unplowed street but cannot seem to get it to load. Bummed because for the first time in this challenge my heavyset yellow lab will not be able to join me on my second runs because he tore his ACL last year and is limited to short walks and lots of naps. I got some new outerwear that worked very well in the blizzard this week and I'm looking forward to getting outside a bit more once this cold front moves out on Mon or Tues (I'm in NY). Single digits with -10 windchill means treadmill runs for me for now.

Ordered my Sole treadmill on December 12th. Dozen phone calls to Sole and their shipping agent, ARC Best, and I'm still waiting for delivery. Ridiculous. Few days recently here on Eastern Long Island we had temps in the teens with 40+ mph wind gusts -- so really not safe or wise to run outside in such conditions. Maybe I should just suck it up and join the gym down the block for a month. Hopefully my treadmill will be here this week.

Ran outside today so I'm at 17/23. Kudos to everyone running outside in these sub-zero temps. I actually had people driving today giving me thumbs up and waves of encouragement for running in these conditions. This never happens.

Hey Kiwi! Welcome to the challenge. No, definitely don't do it manually!

So for the Strava sync logic, I just picked 14 days as a baseline. It's totally configurable, and I picked that number to get a feel for how badly we were going to be hammering the Strava API (it has rate limits). Since we've stayed well under the limits, I'll add an option to sync for a longer period of time (I'm thinking 30 days). Watch for it on the Strava sync page today.

-Eric

ps -- this is in place. I threw it in as 60 days but it can be changed. Let me know if you experience any difficulties.

So far so good. A short flu threw me off a few days just after Christmas, but 26 runs in so far.
When I look in the leaderboard and click on somebody else I get to see their recent workouts. When I click those workouts I get an 'edit exercise' window and it seems I can edit a whole bunch of things. Activity, distance, start time etc. Is that really possible? Or would it throw an error message when I change something (a workout of somebody and else) and then close the 'edit exercise' window?

Hey TriStart, way to jump right on in!

So the box is the same as you would have for your own workout, but no, you can't save over somebody else's stuff.

It does need a bit of polish so that it shows everything correctly (read-only for somebody else's workout). I threw it in very hastily last year and it still needs work.

I forget the message but it's definitely protected on the back end and says something like "security violation". I think on the front end it just errors. :) But thank you for reminding me about it, I need a truly read-only form there.

Congrats! 2 more days to 1/3 of the way. By now you guys should be starting to feel like you are getting in a groove in terms of routines. I hope no aches, pains or injuries. If you feel something coming on, better to wind it back now than to push through recover a bit and pick it up again in a bit. Still 69 days to go!

Almost ended my daily streak yesterday. It was icy as hell out and I debated myself about running on the treadmill. Valour won out over discretion. Within three houses I had my first slip, didn't hit the ground, but seriously thought about turning back. One mile in, I slid far enough I think Dev would have disqualified my run as both feet were not simultaneously off the ground long enough. Through sheer stupid determination and tiny little baby steps I completed 4 miles. Kept it rubber side down, not a lot of fun however.

This challenge is inappropriate for a tri-based forum. We are not runners! We are SBR! Or, in my case, no swim, so RBR/duathlon. Still! 100 runs in 100 days - when am I supposed to bike? Huh? I have a huge stage race in early February. Maybe you've heard of it - the Tour of Sufferlandria? Duh! I won that race in 2016 and 2017 (in my own mind), so I have to make it an A race in 2018 to honor my past success. So this run stuff just *gets in the way*. Running, btw, also gets in the way of my *drinking*, another A race, so to speak. All of you running freaks ought to contaminate some running-only community where your deviant behavior might be tolerated, or, for heaven's sake - appreciated! Yes, yes, I got another run in today, but my efforts are *puny* and *declining* as I prepare for the ToS. There *must* be some compensation for those who continue to cycle during this period. And, yeah, sure, maybe compensation for those weirdos that also swim. I am creating my own spreadsheet in which every bike ride is worth *10* runs. I'm gonna win*! (*in my own mind). Carry on.

Yesterday had to take a "zero" in terms of this challenge but it was no zero overall. For the first time in my life took an oxygen uptake and threshold test at a testing clinic treadmill. Did 9 x 3 min loads with increasing speed. The last one was murder but now I have at least my thresholds set up. This morning did a usual 34 min recovery run. My legs are definitely feeling tired.

Been some tough sledding due to weather and feeling the fatigue build as I didn't take any time off after a 6-hour race on the 6th (with a 3-hour trail race tomorrow..), but getting it done. Maintaining Fridays off but a few doubles here and there have a couple of runs banked in case I need a little extra recovery.

Looks so pretty but this was just after a thaw, then a snowy freeze up - plenty of lumpy ice under the snow, and tough on the ankles.

It also caused some flooding, which then froze up with some slab ice from the river mixed in. Wish I'd brought my traction devices for this one but managed to pick my way through anyway.

Bitter cold temperatures have frozen most of the waterfalls around, but Devil's Creek is fed from an underground spring that seems to have stayed liquid.

Some light left in the sky when finishing a run at 5:45pm gives me faith that spring may come eventually.

Happy trails all!

Thanks for posting the nice pics. I really appreciate it. My shuffling around has been limited to some treadmill jogs and actually hammering pretty hard with snowshoes on the golf course. I am tracking just above 50% right now, which is actually really good. I am waiting for a surgery consult for a disc in my spine. The impingement on the nerve root, is causing leg spasms or so we thought, until my neurologist also found a cyst in my foot between the 3 and 4th metatarsel (where the spasms seem to start), that appears to be impinging the nerve ending causing problems while walking, jogging, biking, skiing....so we're going to try to get that thing yanked out of my foot to see if that allows for some normalization of things and then restoring more symmetry, which hopefully allows my disc area to sort itself out naturally....or eventually go in and cut that open too. In the mean time, depending on the day, I can actually run either pretty good when the nerve is not acting up, or "not at all" when things are more impinged.

I think that actually getting this news really encouraged me and suddenly I was running a bit faster on my woodway treadmill. Let's see. It almost gave me hope that once the cyst is yanked, I can do normal running again outside on trails like you are on!!!!

finally back to N-in-N (41-in-41) having dropped a day on December 22nd due to xmas preparations and weather. managed a double run this morning, split by a 4 mile walk with a friend.

as predicted, the running is generally boring because i know all the routes, but this gets broken up by occasional runs with another friend (diagnosed with Parkinsons, so slow, easy runs but good conversation), a few runs in Chicago while taking care of my daughter, and a Central Park loop a couple of weekends back on a visit to NYC.

generally feeling good. a bit sad that i can run "so fast" on the treadmill (6:30 min/mile doesn't feel like too much of a stretch), but outdoors when running without "competition", going below 8:00 min/mile is a struggle. note: i always run on a treadmill with the gradient set to 2.0). Central Park was fun because the other runners gave a bit of impetus to work harder. Generally went 7:45 or so on the way around the Park.

my wife is still notably ahead of me for 100/100, having (a) logged more hours (b) logged more miles (c) put a couple of runs in the bank to address early season race days still to come. that's ok - she's racing this year and i'm just trying to lose a bit of weight and be able to run if we find ourselves in a nice place.

switched shoes from merrell trail glove 3 to merrell trail glove 4 last week. love the upgrade. they fixed all my niggling issues with the 3, and didn't make anything worse. win!

41 down, 59 to go...

Not a lot of posting for this challenge this year. I took a few days off last Fri and Sun around a trail half marathon in NJ on Sat. In past years I would have hopped right back into the challenge on Sun and at least run my 30 mins but I was pretty beat up Sun morning. This challenge helped me really ramp up my mileage in prep for the half but the very cold weather here in the northeast and tendency towards treadmill runs because of it left me not prepared for the hills and I suffered. I'm going to make an effort the rest of the challenge to get outside as much as possible. I picked up a new pair of Hoka's for the second half and I'm ready to go. Just finished an easy run in frigid temps from my hotel in Rhode Island.

I've managed 43/43, just one niggling little calf strain but it was gone the next day. I'm not putting in a ton of miles, averaging 34 miles/week. If I have the need to rest I've skipped a ride or swim instead.

The biggest payoff, I've noticed so far is I'm within 1-2 pounds of my ideal race weight, without really trying to be.

Third flu during this challenge. Took 3 days off (Wed-Fri) and assuming I get back to running today, I will be 5 runs behind 100/100. Extrapolating, maybe 90/100 could be more realistic with the current pace. I was thinking of running to and back from work which would give few double run days but let's see. I am happy to be running even this consistently.

Thanks for the update. I am a bit baffled why 6:30 mile pace at 2 percent on the treadmill does not translate into at least 7 min pace outdoors even if the treadmill is calibrated? Maybe you are evolving into a "treadmill gait" runner who just uses hip flexors to throw the feet forward, but does not use posterior chain for a firm push off and extend behind you. I classify that as "front half" vs "rear half" runner. I have noted when I do extended periods of treadmill running, my calves for example get more sore after the first runs on firm pavement or track. Takes a few runs before i get back to things. Note that the treadmill is ALWAYS going at constant velocity. Running outdoors, you are NOT running at constant velocity....there is a small acceleration and deceleration inside each stride and the faster you go and effectively connect "bounds" the more the difference. That's really the diff between treadmill and outdoor running, even through lots of people claim it is the same as it is just frames of reference (in one you are moving over stationary ground in the other the ground is moving under stationary you). There are subtle differences in how those frames of reference move from one to the other, accounting for the delta.....bu 1:30 discrepency even with a highly uncalibrated treadmill appears to be too much to make sense to me.

I am shuffling around at around 50% hit rate. Next Friday, I got a surgeon who is going to try to drain the ganglion cyst in my left foot and then let's see how that affects the leg spasms I get. I am hoping if we can fix the foot part, the spine part will sort itself out in time. In the mean time, I am pretty well 100/100 pace on swimming for 60-120 minutes per day....so no shortage of overtraining.

Because I'm lazy ! Put some other runners around me, and I'll do what I can to catch/keep up with them. Put me out there on my own, and I'll just shuffle along quite content with what turns out to be 8-9 min/mile. That's the reason, nothing else.

Dev,

So, this question combines the 100/100 and a response you gave in another thread. I actually started the 100/100 on 11/15 and have not missed a day - I am at about day 75. My average running week has gone from about 3.5 - 4hrs/week to about 7 - 7.5/week . . . sometimes just a bit more. Each week has had at least one 90 minute plus run, and three of the weeks have had a 120 minute run. I have thrown in a little (very little) bit of tempo running and have tried to do one 40 minute run with at least 5 fartleks per week. I am handling the load very well and have no current injuries or nags (other than age). I have also been swimming 5x/week and biking my usual on the weekends. My daughter wants to run her first marathon in 5 weeks and I would like to join her. What are my prospects, and what do you recommend from here?

Thanks,

David

Thanks,

Sorry for the late reply....hey your daughter wants to run a marathon with her dad.....that's a blessing, so whatever you need to do to work her plan! I would go on 6 days per week plan with a longer long run (or a double on the long run day with 30 + 1:45 to 2:15) should keep your 100/100 quest alive AND get you on the long run path for the marathon....but seriously, at 7 hours per week with a weekly 90 min run, you need to do nothing to run a marathon NEXT weekend. If you were to run a marathon next weekend, I would suggest a taper of Tue and Thu 40 min run and Saturday 10 min jog and stretch, which brings you to a 90 min week before say a 4ish marathon (or much faster)....worst case you do a low volume 5.5 hour run week on your marathon week which is much less than 7.5 hours. Then it just becomes a pacing and fueling exercise.

Good news, I get the cyst in my foot aspirated and a cortisone injection today. The hope is that this reduces the nerve ending impingement, and takes care of one side of the nerve and that way the nerve is only compressed at the nerve root at my spine and that once the ending is behaving I can start moving like a normal human without leg spasms on every step and restore symmetry and let my spine area self heal instead of being tugged the wrong way, every step every day.....then maybe I won't need a disc surgery....let's see. In the mean time I am on the 100/100 swim program and around 50-60/100 Woodway Treadmiill shuffle/jog/run program on the days that things feel OK for the challenge. I have gotten up my shuffle speed to 10-12 kph which is somewhere between the 50-55 age group hero (3:30 IM pace) to respectable (4:12 IM pace). So it almost feels like real running on some days.

Glad to hear you are progressing - that has been a long haul for you! Hope you can avoid the disc surgery. I have some pretty bad degeneration at one level but I have nursed it along pretty good so far. Keep us updated on how you are doing. Your shuffle speed is my "run"! I am trying to keep it going as I start winding down the 55 - 59 age group.

Yes, it will be a great day doing a marathon with my daughter . . . just hope I can keep up! I'm going to finish the 100, which will be just in time for your recommended taper. I last ran a marathon (stand alone) 22 years ago to pace a friend. The last one I really ran was 30 years ago. So, folks think it is weird with all the IMs when I say this is a bit of a new adventure. I really have no idea what I can do, other than I know I can keep chugging.

Good luck today!

I was able to wade back in to The Challenge today (47/53). The tweaked calf knocked me out for 6 days. It felt OK running today, while not painful, it felt like it could blow up any moment.

Good luck recovering...

I’m at 45/54 runs, so I’ve fallen behind a bit.

Here’s my takeaway. I can tag the run onto a swim or bike if it’s going on early in the day. But the need to get a run done sometimes undoes other training I should be doing.

So, I’m not sure how long I’ll hang in there trying to do daily runs The consistency is good, but the subbing out of other workouts to get in a measly 30 minute run is not good. And that’s the human temptation.

I am cruising along nicely at 83 runs. I've mainly been doing doubles, mostly in the same pace range with a few long runs or slightly harder runs mixed in. I also ran a trail half marathon in there last month and I'm working my way towards something, not sure what. I'm going to shift to less doubles and mix some longer runs in for one run days at the same mileage I had been doing with two runs. My goal at the start was to build my mileage up and lose some weight. I'm down about 8 lbs since the start but I did not officially weigh myself on 12/15.

I purchased a used Peloton on eBay last week mainly for my wife but I'll start mixing in some rides as well. I road for the first time in ages yesterday and it was nice to get back on a bike, even if it is a spin bike.

PSA: It's way easier to stay on pace (or ahead of it) for the 100 in 100 if you don't go snowboarding and sprain every bloody tendon in your right ankle taking a hard bail on an icy slope, flipping over a couple of times in the process. Guess my board got a little stuck in the snow as I rotated and body tried turning with my foot locked in place - felt like someone whacked my boot with a damn sledgehammer.

Osteopath appointment last night (at 24hrs from injury) got me limping along without a cane now, but who knows if I'll even run again before the end of the challenge.

So bloody bitter about this. I'd been making good decisions, taking pretty solid care of myself, and had half a dozen runs banked. Ah well - at least my last run was a pretty one. 4 hours in 4" of fresh snow on Saturday with more still falling, as part of a friend's fundraiser for mental health initiatives and research.

Two minutes after this photo there were no further thumbs up...though I did manage another 5 runs on the hill before calling it a day. I've attributed the whole thing to the new pair of snowboard boots I had to buy that morning after discovering my old ones were falling apart. They were a little too small, and I couldn't get my binding strap cranked down as well as I'd have liked, so didn't have quite the rock-solid connection to my deck I'd like for maximum control. Damn things tore the hell out of my hands lacing them, too - clearly cursed. Fortunately I was able to return them so they won't have another chance to wreck me!

Took a day off yesterday as well. I had planned on doing a longer run in the morning on Wed but got caught up in some work things and only had time for 5 miles in the am between conference calls. It was nice in the afternoon so tried to go out for 4-5 more and struggled big time. I was really fatigued the rest of the night and when I woke up yesterday - like the energy bank had been completely depleted. So just walked yesterday. Walked the dog this morning, may take the day off from running again but it's 50+ degrees so it's tough to pass up the opportunity to run outdoors here in NY.

Slightly fell of the wagon over the last few days. Did a double run (with a 4 mile walk in between) last Wednesday and decided to take Thursday off (very busy with home renovation work). Then got even more immersed in the rewiring job and failed to run Sunday as well.

Next two days will be around 70F or warmer which is insanely warm for Philadelphia in February. Hopefully construction work will not prevent me from getting some more miles in.

Not sure how this years excessive amount of treadmill running is working out. Been doing a lot of 30 mins-let's-see-how-fast-i-can-go runs rather than last year's running ... 45-70 miles a week out on the trails of the Spanish mediterranean. On the other hand, I have zero racing plans so it doesn't really matter much - just weight control and feeling good.

Can we vote on cutoffs for lead and wood medals. If this cortisone shot I got today is effective, I may be able to get back to some treadmill shuffle jogs before end of challenge. I just checked the log and I have 34 runs in. If we can get some fluffy snow around here again, then I can definitely log a bunch of easy snowshoe runs which work well with my disk issues landing on soft snow. I COULD have a shot at 50 if the snow cooperates....I don't cover much distance in those, but it's real running with weights on my legs on a soft surface!!!! So what's the cut off for lead and wood medals? Tell me that the 34 runs I have gets me over the 33 run cutoff for wood!!!

This is the first time that I have taken up the 100/100 challenge. Because of the weather in Toronto I have been doing most of my runs on a treadmill - last winter was so much nicer. I did get out for an icy run last week-end along the shores of beautiful Lake Ontario though and thought that this thread could use another picture.

I am the one on the right waddling across the ice.

unfortunately dropped 3 runs in the last week. I stupidly allowed a double run 2 wednesdays ago to give me Thursday off, and that broke the spell that has kept me going (even when it means running at 22:30 at night). Hope to get back on track on the next couple of days.

Had my first run today in nearly 2 months that actually felt like a run. Managed to maintain 7:55 min/mile on a 10km course that mixes trails, grass, roads and a mixture of rolling hills with a couple of short steeper climbs. 3 minutes faster than the normal time for this during 100/100. Haven't had that feeling since being in Central Park NYC in January. The sunshine and mild temperatures today helped a lot.

Definitely enjoying the overall benefits of 100/100, but wondering what happens when its over. Trying to get in runs on top of work, cooking, house repairs (we're selling this spring/summer) is hard, and once the 100/100 motivation is over, I'm not sure I can keep doing it.

Very tough month.

By end Jan I was cruising, had done more runs than days and felt that it was in the bag.

Then got smashed by illness, which was 1 week of nothing at all, followed by 2 weeks of struggle to get the minimum run done on most days, with a few failures doing even that. This left the mojo down, sort of 'I'm beaten - why even bother' plus a few niggles.

Seem to be bouncing back though, getting the run a day in and yesterday was the first double run day, already followed up with a run today. UK is getting bad weather so it's the tedium of the treadmill, but feeling back on it.

Current score is -10 (10 more days then runs), debating whether to try and steer it home and settle for 90/100 or find the extra 10 double days and see if the full house is still possible....

Out for my first run in 2.5 weeks last night, but had to shut it down after half a kilometer. The ankle just isn't ready - apparently a Grade 2 sprain involving just about every ligament and tendon in there isn't something a fortnight can cure.

Will see if I can get a 30min run in again before the end of the challenge, but it's going to be at least a week before I try again and even that will probably only be to see if I can go for 5mins.

At least I'm training myself with some fast walking, which will help if I actually end up attempting a 100 miler in the fall..

Worth trying running. This is what hockey goalies use for rehab for groins. Maybe even elliptical. I bet you will be back in a few days!

How is Herbert doing. 21 days to go. On track for the full 100? Is this the first year, you will do all? I will try some jogging again today. Had a cortisone injection in my disc last week and now ready to give jogging on the Woodway another try.

Damn, sorry to hear about the sprain. What about uphill walking on the treadmill. Might get the ankle range of motion closer to running without the pounding....and elliptical. Spin bike standing intervals were good after my zillion ankle sprains during my lifespan.

I am currently 1 ahead and will run again today. I have taken a few days off including 2 this week, but I often run doubles. So I am on pace to go 100, but if my body does not feel up for it I will stop. My first race is SwimRun Lake James in early April and I have to be fully healthy and fast. My female partner is faster running and swimming :-)

Thanks Dev, but I don't have access to a treadmill or elliptical - I've just been doing hard walks on my lunch that include a couple of decent size hills, swimming a fair bit (finally able to kick on my back last Tues), riding the trainer and doing quite a bit of rock climbing along with daily rehab exercises. Getting stronger; can balance on it for 2mins while moving the other leg to increase difficulty, but 1-leg squats show that my ROM isn't great and there's a lot of tightness in my flexor hallucis longus. Managed two whole 1-foot hops on the bad ankle on Saturday night but it was sore Sunday, so call that 2 hops forward and 1 hop back?

Hope the cortisone gets you back out there!

The worst kind of injury, non-running related!. My groin pull may actually be a hernia. Got an ultrasound yesterday and my fingers arecrossed it's not positive for a hernia.

I guess, but if it is a hernia it's easily fixed with a simple day surgery.

So today hit the 33 of 100 goal, next one was to do 50 out of 100, but that is long gone now. So somewhere in-between, a forced 2 1/2 weeks off was the killer. Feeling a tiny bit sick maybe/maybe not, so just jogging 9;50 pace runs for 5k. Good news is when I started this back when, that pace was hard and I would get sore!!

Just two more weeks to go - and I am looking forward to being done! Yesterday was my first missed day - too sick and too sore to even think about running - but after a long sleep and a lot of kinesio tape, I am back on track and still have a few doubles in the bank. Congratulations to everyone who has made it this far!

Ran 2km today. Not perfect, but not too bad - it's progress. Much less feeling of weakness and instability in the ankle, but it fatigues very quickly. Don't really care that it won't count for the challenge - just happy I could run today, even if I can't tomorrow.

Will see how it feels over the next day or two and decide if I'll try again on Monday, or if it needs some more time.

Couple of days missed in the last week, one due to illness, the other resting up for half marathon today.
PB in the half marathon, 6 seconds under 1:30, still with the cold not properly cleared, so the 100 runs must be doing something!
Really enjoying the challenge, just need to double up a couple of times to get back on track!

Agree that it's been a good challenge. I'm on pace for the most runs I've had in the 4-5 times I've done this and although a struggled through two of the weeks with hamstring issues I think I'll make it through with limited injuries. I've mostly stopped with the double runs and switched over to a NYRR.org marathon training plan for my first marathon in May.

Need to run 7 doubles and 4 singles, or 8 doubles, couple of singles to have a rest day.

Get the feeling I'm going to end up needing 5/6 runs in the last 2 days....

Hey, so I had a few weeks off my jogging and snowshoe running after a cortisone shot and we got a bit more snow, so I can head out again. I just checked the log and I am at 40 runs with 11 days of running left. I would have to go out 1x per day to hit the rock bottom 50% threshold. Did we decide if this is a wood medal, lead medal or depleted uranium????

Don't worry, 6 more days of running. After today you only need 5. Even on the last day you could do 30 min run + 30 min swim + 30 min refuel break four times plus a 30 min run and you're done and get some perfect swim-run training in too!!!!

In a classic case of "too little, too late" I was finally able to add a 65th to my tally yesterday. The fitness I've lost in the last month is seriously depressing - a 30min point-to-point downhill run with a tailwind should never feel that hard.

Not willing to risk my ankle by running on back to back days yet (let alone doing any doubles), so eggplant emoji for me as well. With a bit of luck I may make it to 67 total, if things feel ok to go again tomorrow and Thursday.

Congrats to those who are just coasting into the finish line now!

With yesterday's run after work, I made it to 70, so I iced myself a Bronze

Which is basically 5 running days out of 7 each week. Granted, I did do a handful of doubles to keep on pace early, but the last month or so I've been able to go 6 days out of 7, usually taking Monday off

Hey Dev,

First off thank you for organizing this event. It really was quite an experience and you're a good man for helping out everyone who did or even attempted this! Even if people didn't make it.. just even trying it is a big deal. (in my opinion). As I wrote to you earlier I owed you a run bc of a watch "mishap" during an indoor track session where i had to stop my watch and restart and it downloaded as two runs.. they were barely 1min apart, let alone 1 hour. But i gave you 101!!
Its day 97 and while I have more time for more runs, I am out. My hip, this head cold and travel are throwing me into reverse. However, you'll hear more from me shortly, like in the next day or so... but I wanted to say thanks. Not just for the runs but for the swims too and making this a fun winter! I really needed something after getting deathly ill 12 hours before xterra worlds last fall.
REDEMPTION!
Talk soon,
DaveD

was relying on the fact that i normally do a double run (plus a 4 mile trail walk separating them, for a total of 13.2 miles) on Wednesdays to get me totally caught up.

but then we got slammed with the "four-easter" storm yesterday. Julie and I did get out and do her final 100th run in 4-5" of snow, during the storm, but I'm still down 1 run. Planning to head over to the gym this afternoon and get 2 treadmill runs done with weights in between. Then it will just a couple of routine runs on Friday and Saturday to bring it home, and get my lifetime score of 4 for 2 (4 attempts at 100-in-100, with 2 completions).

Thanks to all the folks who have shared their experiences. And thanks to Dev and Eric and anyone else who has put the effort in to make this happen. The regular check-in has held me accountable and helped motivate me to run at times when the motivation was low. It's been a lot like having a regular training group.

I've been lucky this winter and have remained relatively healthy in a build for Boston. The challenge has inspired me to become creative as the weather in the northeast has been less than ideal. The dreadmill has played an integral role and I've gained valuable experience in how to incorporate it, in a positive manner.

Congrats to everyone who participated for your strong efforts and I hope it fuels a successful season.

Just finished my 99th run, 100th will be a 30 minuter on the dreadmill at work lunch, with an expected loud whoop when 30:00 flashes up on the Garmin.

Running wise I've been on fumes for the last 3 weeks with a large deficit to catch up after a terrible illness wracked first 3 weeks of February, think I was on -13 at one point and ready to give up. Really glad I didn't.

The challenge has been excellent - first 50 odd days went like a dream: my gameplan was to add two short treadmill runs to my usual 4 run schedule and split the long run into two to get the 1 run/day average overall and create room for a rest day. It was working really well and possibly would have made light work of the overall challenge until February struck....trying to claw back the deficit after this has been really hard but will make crossing the line later feel so much greater.

Interested to hear all the war stories of how it went....

When does this thing end? I see two dates listed in several places on the site -- March 23, 2018 (in north America, Friday) and March 24, 2018 (in North America, Saturday). Friday morning, i'm at 99 straight days, to get 100 straight days, do I need to do two runs today? or get # 100 tomorrow, Saturday? or did I mess up and not login one day?

Late, afternoon revision - WTF - after all these days running, I did 2 runs today. Got my 100 days - actually I started with the USAT NCC Challenge, December 1st - 115 running day in a row. I'm ready for a break/change of pace. 2 weeks until Ironman Oceanside.

Super congrats to all of you who participated in the 100/100. I want to apologize for my lack of engagement and participation in terms of posting and providing input on this year's 100/100. Between continuing health challenges and starting a tech company last fall (http://www.bluwave-ai.com) I just had my attention elsewhere and I've been using my athletic time to learn some new "sports" (learning all 4 strokes of swimming) and some indoor rowing. I did try to get out to shuffle many times, but my body was not really cooperating yet and I am still waiting for a disc surgery date. In any case, putting myself aside it is fantastic to see all of you running consistently and seeing how to fit this into your day to day schedule and getting (hopefully) the upside benefits that come with that! I hope you have a great upcoming season. I'll never say never and hope to join you all for next year's addition after I have surgery. In the mean time I swam around 350K over the last 100 days, so probably more miles swimming than most people walk daily over 100 days.

Thanks for the work you and others do here to make this happen year after year. This was the first year I did this challenge. While the challenge in itself is somewhat trivial, it had a meaningful impact on my training. My fall off-season was a bit rough this year with travel and sickness. I was having a hard time getting back into the swing of training and signed up for this challenge as a motivator. I am proud to say I ran every single day. The extra motivation the challenge provided really took me out of an off season slump, and 100 days later I am poised for the start of a successful season.

Thanks Dev for motivating us and Dan for enabling this challenge. This was a great motivation to "train to get ready to train" by building the consistency and foundation. The good news is I made it through injury free and my cardio feels strong. Unfortunately I missed run number 100 on Saturday because I was doing the Palm Springs Cactus to Clouds trail hike (21 miles with 10,600 feet elevation gain) and thought I was going to be able to run for 30 min part way down from the summit to the tram station but there was too much ice (and really I was too knackered at that point). Strategy for next time is to double up runs earlier in the challenge.

my first attempt at 100/100...I finished with 92 and 445 miles. I got sick towards the end so missed a few days, but overall, still pleased how this turned out. I had actually started a little early, the day after Thanksgiving, so this has been my biggest 4 month run volume ever. Hoping it translates into some good results this year.

I was wondering the same thing but according to the actual day count on the training log, day 100 is on Saturday. I had planned out going by Friday until we got close enough for me to easily count the days to finish and realized I may have an extra day.

Hey guys, these are valid concerns. Date math is fuzzy at best under the best circumstances. The way the challenges are coded is time-zone agnostic, so it depends on the start date of the activity entry. As long as the start date is on the last day, you have the whole day to finish your challenge-y bidness. I couldn't think of any other way to make it fair (e.g. you'd be screwing one group as the challenge began, and another group as it ended if it was a on a fixed timezone point).

Nice work :)

Just as a final note, completed the 100/100 within the timescale (last 3 weeks were really hard as I was several runs behind. I then took an easy light running week and now getting back on it this week and feeling sensational. I nhave a feeling of running strength, smoothness combined with low HR that I've not seen since pure running days. Excited for the season now; thanks to the organisers of this and fellow 'sufferers'.

Just bringing this back for one more thanks to Dev. It is the first time I ever participated in this, or anything having to do with running. My top line goal was to do 50 runs(of exactly 30 minutes), every other day. Two bouts of being sick for weeks held me to 38, but got in consecutive days for the first time in years. Actually first runs in about 4 years, so the push I needed I guess, so thanks again.

Today after those 3 months and one more, 7 miles a week average, I have gone from 10+ minute 5k runs to a sub 8 minute paced one today. Not really racing as of yet, but I was breathing hard. I actually think I just might be able to still run a 20 minute 5k someday still, but got 4 really hard minutes to shave off the high hanging fruit out there.

30 years and 20lbs ago I held 5;20 pace for a 5k, doesn't seem real that 2 1/2 minutes a mile should be so hard now, ughhh...

Thanks Monty. It is quite inspirational to see all of you guys a decade or so ahead of me in chronology so athletic and excited about getting the most out of their bodies, especially former pro athletes who, if they compare their current self to the former version, it would be a continuous exercise in self frustration. You have the right attitude to life.

I am going in to see the surgeon about a nerve decompression disc surgery consult tomorrow....I am hoping that if she can fix me up, I can get back to normal biking without leg spams, and maybe some proper running. But as you know, I am now completely transformed to dolphin mode. No matter what level of running I can get to, I doubt I will ever want to do more running per week in hours than swimming. But if I can get back on the bike properly, well, that's another story! Minimally if she can fix the nerve and I get full control over my left leg, I am certain that I can take my 400 IM way sub 7 minutes as I will actually be able to use my left leg for back and breast stroke without having it flop all over the place with no power. Fly is less affected and while free is, I can cheat with arms and I'm not as penalized with the bad leg....but at least I can get through. In running when the bad leg is not working, forget abouot it!

If all works, next year, 50 runs would be a great target.

Not sure if this is the latest/ most recent thread for the 100 Run 100 Days challenge? I did a few searches and this is the thread I found.

Seeing as we're exactly a month out, I'm going to start running every other day to properly prepare. Last three years I was able to start well, but then I always get sick due to work travel or training outside in harsh winter conditions. This year I'm a stay at home Dad, and for the first time in 6 years: no work travel!! And secondly, I have my treadmill set up and did my first Zwift Run last night -- and it was pretty damn cool.

Having sorted out my undoings in the past, I'm feeling good about a legitimate shot at 90/100.

Hopefully the Strava integration is all set to go? It was lovely not having to manually enter workouts.

Dev, hope your recovery is coming along well and you can participate this year?

I just tried the Strava integration to Slowtwitch upload, and it worked like a charm.

T-minus 29 days till 100/100.

I did one on my own over the summer

After snapping a streak at 71 runs for 71 days [81 days in a row], I basically cruised in, doing just about every other day through August to finish with 86/100

I wish it was actually renamed something like the 50/100 or 75/100 challenge.

I think it’s a really great concept to help with consistency and accountability-especially in the dreary winter months but some force it and get injured trying to keep up a useless streak.

I plan to participate this year!

Nope, Strava not required. If you want to show up on the 100/100 spreadsheet you have to enter the workout into ST training log.

Coming off a bad case of ITBS, I'm currently on the 5 day a week plan, I'm thinking 70 is realistic and 75 would be a stretch goal. Let's hope I don't get caught up in the hype and blow a hammy week 7!

The 100/100 protocol usually goes as follows:

December 1st: Annual "Airing of Grievances" thread opens, wherein people complain that 30 minutes is too long for a minimum run

December 15, or so: Competition begins

December 16: People start complaining they can't upload files from Day 1 into the ST Training Log, where the official standings are kept

Yes this is roughly the process. Get a month of base miles in now and shore up the grievances for Dec 1. We can spend 2 weeks getting it out of our system and then the running begins for real. Sorry I have not been on this thread. Last few weeks were either work, or swimming. I need to get 154K of swimming in before end of year to hit my target for 1200km for the year. Roughly speaking I need to do 3.8K swim per day every day the rest of the year to hit the target. So you'll have a fish guy rambling about running shortly.

I won't be joining the "official" challenge as I am just wrapping up my own. As of today I've run 93 out of the last 100 days for a total of 501 miles. It's been an interesting experiment as I've not run that type of frequency ever in 62 years. I had to stop swimming and biking in order to get in my runs. There were a couple of times that I was ready to stop but ice and ibuprofen keep me going. Three of the seven days I missed were due to skin cancer surgery so that was excusable. I'm shutting it down this week (< 3 mile runs) in preparation of my first ultra marathon this Saturday. I feel strong and confident that I will finish as long as I pace accordingly. I need to start swimming and biking again to be ready for some races at the beginning of the year and that is why I won't be joining the "official" challenge. Good luck!
