Help me find a Half IM
Okay, wisdom of the Slowtwitch forum, I need your help finding a good HIM to do. I need to complete one before next summer to validate my entry into another race (SOS).

Criteria:
  • Within driving distance or nonstop flight from Denver
  • Preferably NOT Ironman brand
  • Preferably May, June, or July (basically any weekend other than June 23/24 and June 30/July 1)
  • Not a shitshow (so, no HITS races)

Ideas?

Hmmm, nothing on trifind, perhaps for the non-WTC you need to wait until Jan/Feb to look around?

Why a nonstop flight?

Pink? Maybe. Maybe not. You decide.

The White Lake Half in Eastern North Carolina. Late April, most beautiful lake swim you'll ever do (white sand bottom so effectively clear water), flat bike and run and cool venue. Raleigh gets nonstops from Denver on United and it would be a 90 minute drive or so to White Lake. Rural, not a lot of hotels. But you can stay at a little motel near the site. This used to be the biggest half between Atlanta and DC in the early 2000s before Ironman grew. The Setup race series in North Carolina is for my money the best series in any state in the U.S. - you can have ocean swims, lakes, rivers, mountain venues, coastal, and it's a long season. Pardon the editorial - but I am nostalgic for those races. Here's a link:

x1,000!!!

ETA: Also, Frontier is currently showing a roundtrip, nonstop flight between Denver & Raleigh for $211 for the weekend of White Lake April 2018.

Pink? Maybe. Maybe not. You decide.

Tri Fort Worth. Direct flight from Denver, takes place in May, not IM brand, has 70.3 and 140.6 options.

Attacking this day with enthusiasm unknown to mankind.

“Not a shitshow (so, no HITS races)”

That’s pretty funny.

Right now if you sign up for HITS Palm Springs (not actually in Palm Springs) in December you get a free entry for HITS Napa (not actually in Napa) in April.

I know for a fact she is way too smart to fly Frontier.

Good recommendation on WhiteLake.

I would also recommend Kinetic Half in Virginia, similar greatness in race organization and chill environment.

Long time no post 140.6 chick... nice handle!

There's always Wildlfower.... ;) But you also need a guaranteed sub 7 for SOS validation. So maybe not....

Wildflower.

DEN to SBP Nonstop Flight on United

May 5

Definitely NOT Ironman brand

Outstanding race, especially aid stations.

That said, it is a humbling race... Especially that run!

Oh, and great destination. California's Central Coast is better than Boulder/Denver IMHO... Except we can't altitude train here.

nonstop flight from Denver to Sacramento: Southwest Airlines has them apparently by using Google.

Not Ironman brand: Auburn Triathlon in Auburn California. - dubbed the hardest half Ironman triathlon in the world. However, they've apparently changed it so that the bike course is flatter.

I've not done the event but I'm signed up. Race Date: June 3, 2018

There are videos of the triathlon with results posted online for past events.

The triathlon is going on 16 years and USAT Membership is required.

If there were more hours in the day then I would be cycling more!

Wasn’t the bike elevation some 6,000 ft this year? How is changing it to 3700 ft within the toughest half theme?

I didn't realize they changed it for 2018. That 6000ft course was tough!!

A good one is the Toughman, Utah (http://www.racetri.com/the-utah-half/) in July. It has been around for many years (used to be the Utah Half) and is really well organized. It's a direct flight from Denver to Salt Lake and then about 50 mins south to Provo. Or you can just drive the 6-7 hours to Provo. However, one of the best is 70.3 St. George in May. It's Ironman but it's a great race in a beautiful location. You can also drive from Denver or fly into Vegas and drive 2 hrs to St. George.

Can confirm the shit show aspect... Two years in a row was led off course by staff, once I was in 2nd OA off the bike with 8 min lead on 3rd place - ran an extra 1.5mi. Timing issues, unmarked courses, no volunteers at aid stations... If you want a partially catered workout then do HITS but if you want to compete and not waste weeks of training + travel and hotel costs then sign up for a WTC race or something.

I've heard great great things about this race! I too live in Denver. I fly to Raleigh 2x per year to see my sis, direct flights on SW. Maybe I will look at White Lake too :)

Another vote for the Auburn Triathlon here. I raced it two years ago. Beautiful course with hills. The swim is in Folsom Lake and the run is single track on some of the Western States trails. Excellent food and beer after from local brewery. Denver to Sacramento is an easy flight and Auburn is probably a 40 minute drive east on I-80. There are a lot of brewery's and wineries to enjoy in the Sierra Foothills.

Clean Sierra water, good roads with great scenery and an excellent run course that may stop you in your tracks to take in the views.

Lots of great suggestions here, thanks everyone.

To those peeps who suggested the Auburn Tri--I like it, but I am supposed to do a sub 7 hour HIM to validate my entry into the other race. Which normally wouldn't be a problem, but looking at last year's results, only 38 of the 92 finishers were sub-7. Good Lord, how hard is this race?! Sounds like they have taken 2K+ of the climbing on the bike course out, so that will make things faster but geez. What do you think one would add to their standard HIM time to guesstimate a finish time at Auburn?

Yep, auburn in the past added time. But with the new easier bike course, we have no basis as to what the bike times will be like now. I know the old half bike course, which I have ridden a number of times, was a killer, like 5K of climbing. But the new course, which was changed on purpose to make it easier, will give much faster race times.

So if want an easy course, Auburn is not it. If you want a great course, as many who have done have stated, you will have a lot of fun. And Ryan at USAP productions is making lots of great changes to make it even better.

Now, maybe someone can comment on the new bike course, since many have probably ridden it, or parts of it. I believe I have and it clearly is much faster than the old course!!

Looking back at my 70.3 race times for 2015 and 2016, it looks like I my overall finish times were 30 minutes slower in Auburn than they were at Austin and Oceanside. I was about 10 minutes slower in Auburn than I was for Donner Lake. If you don't mind driving 2 hours east from the Sacramento Airport (or an hour West from the Reno Airport), then I'd recommend the Donner Lake Triathlon particularly if you have family or friends in tow because they just hang out at the beach all day listening to live music while you race. The bike has a lot of climbing but the run is relatively flat and spectacular.
