2017 Ironman Florida

It seems things have changed on ST. Years ago, there would be threads for weeks leading up to the race. Threads about bib numbers being up, threads about water temperature, threads about drafting, jellyfish, you name it. Now, nothing. The race is just over three weeks away and if there has been a thread about it, I guess I missed it. Is there just less interest in Ironman events, or has ST "jumped the shark?"

If all goes well (as I ice my calf), this will be my 11th consecutive IMFL.

There is a lot of discussion, excitement, etc regarding IMFL on Facebook. Same of all of the other IM-centric facebook groups that I belong to. I may be the last adult on Earth to join facebook (last year) but there is much more discussion there than on ST. The topics of conversation are very different on the two platforms tough. On FB you see a lot of nervousness, excitement, "look at my gear", and other "fluff". I guess this is typical FB fodder. ST seems to be more talk about how we all know how to improve the pro's bike fit (pink-ish) and arguing over why disc brakes do/don't suck.

Me personally, I'm just burned the F out. Between a formerly very fit runner wife who is now dealing with heart problems, general work BS, probable overtraining thought I feel like I'm horribly under trained, etc, I'm on the verge of just pulling the plug on IMFL and calling it a season.

Don't drown. Don't crash. Don't walk.

I've seen all the FB chatter as well. I'll be there floating, overbiking, and jogging. Maybe I'll wear a shirt from a different race to check-in, so I can be discussed on a strange denizen of check-in thread in a few weeks.

I will be there. Broke my arm on the bike last year around mile 90 so my goal is pretty simple this year...don't crash.

Training has been steady and I don't have any major pains or strains so I am pretty excited going into the race. Last year the winds were strong all year this year it's been pretty low. Last year it wasn't over 90 degrees during the days leading into the race. This year it is. At this point I am hoping for hot weather because any cold front will bother me since my training is in the heat.

Wish you well in the calf injury.

You need to wear full race kit to check in.

I’ll be there. Will be my first Ironman. Excited but scared shitless at the same time. I’m ready for race day to just be here already. The lead up and anticipation is killing me. It’s dragging on, though I have actually enjoyed the training and process. I have a pretty big 4 days of training starting tomorrow and then we are in the home stretch.

Water temp seems to be warm (80ish). Still will be a toss up. Hoping for no wetsuit. But will be prepared for anything.

Yea mon, you're right. My first IMFL was 2004, and ST and the Arange page both had running commentary.....

I won't be doing IMFL again until 2019, Lord willing, when I age up and the race is on my bday...just for grins. Sufferfest is my idea of a wonderful birthday present.....

Best of luck to you, Spartacus!

Very warm. Not sure how fast the gulf water cools. For IMLou, it starts dropping 0.5 degrees a day once you hit October, but that's obviously a river.

I think IMFL has only had the one non wetsuit swim? Somebody might correct me on that. I know it's usually been wetsuit legal.

I think we will have to wait and see which pros bomb early out of Kona and punt to the Florida race. Imagine the top 5 men all get sent off course at Havi, DQ'd on the bike and they all decide to duke it out in Florida!!!

Can’t speak to the rate of cooling. Look at the forecast and it’s going to get into the 60s at night in a few days. Water temp will drop and it will be real close to the cut off come raceday.

2015 is the only year I know of that it wasn’t wetsuit legal. Though I’m told it’s still close every single year. I would be prepared for both (mentally speaking).

You’ll be good, I saw you race in Raleigh this year, just stick to your pre-race plan. Don’t over do the calories, that’s hard to bounce back from. Last 10 miles of the marathon, if you have it in you it go for broke. The anticipation is a knot in the chest at times, anxiety is a mofo.

I know, should have used pink. But in the old days when some big threads on Florida were popular, there were some pretty good pros that would pitch up and make it a race. And then there was also Joe Bonness, he created quite a bit of buzz here pre race too. But now unless they cancel the swim or someone posts 40 person pelotons, it doesn't get much play pre race.

We'll spot each other at check-in then, and pose for a wetsuit twins photo. Trucker hat for me though.

It's been wetsuit legal ever year except one, so history says it'll likely be wetsuit legal again this year. I just checked and one website has it at 79 today, another has it at 76.8. But who knows. I'll take no wetsuits over 4 foot swells and swimming through puke.

Anyone here have any experience with a late check-in? I just found out I will not be able to get into town until Friday afternoon. I have e-mailed one contact already and they stated I will not be able to check in after 5pm on Thursday. I understand the schedule was posted several weeks ago but shit happens. I may not be racing after all.

You're going to need to get in touch with the RD directly or some other official assigned specifically to IM Florida. Anyone at the corporate offices is going to come back with the canned "No" response.

Has anybody ever rented just the front wheel for the race? Mine started squealing really bad yesterday so when I was taking off the hub caps to regrease the wheel bearings the cap Allen wrench hole cracked. It isn't going to affect usability since it gets cranked into the bike but I can't fix the squealing now and it's messing with me mentally. Too little time to send it into Reynolds to get rebuilt.

I have a few extra front wheels which don't squeak that I would gladly lend you. Nothing fancy (Planet X 80 mm tubular, Real Design, and Ksyrium).

I don't have any experience with tubular but I REALLY appreciate your offer. Reynolds told me to take it to my local machine shop and have them replace the squeaking bearings as they are standard 6208 bearings. That is IF I can get the hub caps off. I am going to give it a go this week and if they split I will send you a PM to meet up. Thank you.

I'll be there for my first (and last) full. Excited and terrified(marathon) at the same time.

Current water temp is 73... dropped about 3 degrees in the last 24 hours. Im OK wetsuit or no... but obviously would prefer to have one.

Weather looks, at least for now, to be almost perfect... although the high temp on the day has been creeping up. Winds look mild.

I'll just be happy to get this over with... it's the first time I've ever loathed training. The taper hit at the perfect time, cause I was fucking over it. Starting to feel better mentally... physically my taper has been weird (granted I have no reference as this is my first IM taper). Been feeling great in the water; have felt like shit on the bike with the exception of my last trainer ride where i felt OK; have generally felt good on runs but after yesterdays run my right foot hurts and I'm more sore than usual.

I few things worth noting:

1. The ST crowed tends to be a bit more sophisticated than the general triathlon crowd, and by that I mean, into trying new and different things in multi-sport or generally in endurance sports. I first noticed this years ago, at the now defunct Leadman Long triathlon (an awesome race) in Bend, OR - there was a super-high percentage of ST folk who were doing the race. Jordan Rapp, made his victory-speech all about, trying new things in multisports and endurance sports. So in that light, I'm guessing a good percentage of ST folk have "moved on" from IM.

2. Numbers generally in the sport in North America right now are down or flat - depending on how you look at things. IM races that used to sell-out a year in advance, the day that reg opened for the following year, are now back to a "normal" reg process. In other words, the hype, and mania, from 5 - 10 years ago, is not there.

3. I've said this before, but the demographics in IRONMAN races in particular, are very heavy in the middle-aged men AG's - 40-55 year-olds. People get into triathlon in their late 30's early 40's, do a couple of IM races, then realize the factual reality, that 40- year old bodies can only take so much pounding and stress. So they are either in and out quickly in triathlon or, they go to shorter racing!

I wouldn't blame it on IMFL. It is still one of the most popular Ironman events. It just takes a lot longer to sell out than it did when it had no real competition.

I live outside of Tampa. Eleven years ago when I started doing Ironman events, Lake Placid was the second closest Ironman (IMFL was obviously the closest). Now Cozumel, Louisville, Texas, Chattanooga, and Maryland are all closer than Lake Placid. People in the Southeast have a lot more options.

that's kinda what I was getting at... nothing against IMFL or any of the people or clubs doing it. In fact, it's on my list to do someday.

But it's definitely not what it used to be, both in terms of prestige and access. IMAZ seems to have taken over the fall IM KOM and all the other closer ones that are available now are pretty cool in their own rights... Cozumel with the resort vacation feel, Chattanooga and KY with the cool downtowns, TX with the NA Champs, extra slots, and cool venue, etc.

But anyway, rock on to everyone racing!

It also used to be the case that you needed to sit by your computer and try and enter as soon as the race opened up. These days, not so much. IMFL was my first IM back in 2003 and I think I entered it sometime in late November. By 2006 or 2007, if you waited 1 day, you were SOL. Now, I think you can enter pretty much any time. It's been interesting to watch the "progress" of the brand and the race.
