While I never had the exact issues you describe, I alway had trouble with my Quarq working in races with my Garmin as the devices would inevitably go to sleep during my swim and fail to wake up when I started the bike leg. Not sure if the issue was on the Garmin side or the Quarq side.

I had a similar experience once with a Quarq Dzero. The unit always worked with no issues during training and in two other races but, one race day I hop onto the bike after T1 and no power is showing and my cadence appears to be 10,0,25,0,30,0,10 rpm... Which is interesting because I have a Wahoo speed/cadence sensor so I would think that if the powermeter was completely not functioning then the head units would switch to cadence from the Wahoo.

Extremely frustrating. This was with both a Polar M450 head unit and a Garmin 920xt on my wrist. So for the first mile and a half I am screwing with all of my electronics seeing if I can some how reconnect to it. No dice, I had to ride out the entire race without power or cadence.

Back home and I read online about troubleshooting. One of the steps is to remove the battery and slightly bend up the metal prongs that are under the battery to ensure they provide enough tension on the battery for a good connection. This step works and since then I have had no issues.

For the above mentioned race, I did not leave my bike there that night so that part is not consistent with your experience.

Your problem is because the bike is racked outside overnight and the condensation or rain is getting into the meter. All my quarqs eventually had this problem. Once back at home in dry conditions it will start working again.

It took me about 4 races in 2014 to realize what the problem was. It's not water getting into the battery its getting through the seal on the meter itself. My guess is your meter is at least 2 years old.

Leave it outside on the grass overnight and test it. Then try to wrap it with towels and see if it works. Eventually you are going to need to replace it.

have you tried - replacing battery at home and resyncing it there? and then show up at race with the new battery and everything working?

I train religiously by power, mostly using Trainer Road and plan my race strategy around a goal TSS and percentage of FTP. However, almost every other time I've raced, my power meter has failed to work race morning. Ironman Santa Cruz 70.3 this past weekend, Oceanside 70.3 last year, and Ironman Tahoe 2015 I raced without power due to the same issue. I always make sure the battery is new. When I turn on my Garmin in transition race morning, the PM icon fails to show, indicating there's no signal. I take out the battery, replace it, and the red light turns on indicating that all should work. When I run a search on my Garmin, it picks up my HRM but indicates that "multiple power meters have been detected, move 20 feet away." I have tried this, moving 50 feet away and still...nothing. How are so many others in transition able to sync their power meters when every other bike has one? The only thing I can think of is that this seems to happen when I have to check my bike in the day before the race and it sits overnight. Is there a temperature issue or moisture issue (no moisture in the air in Lake Tahoe but it does get cold at night) that is causing my PM to fail me race AM? It's gotten to the point where I'm thinking about getting rid of the Quarq and going either SRM, Power Tap, or Garmin Vectors. Any ideas?

Design flaw, moisture, and thank you for overbiking ;-)

I had a similar problem last weekend at Lake Placid. My issue is definitely with my 735xt watch and Garmin. When in multi-sport mode it fails to pick up power data. I used a separate Wahoo bike computer though and had power data to look at while on the bike with no issues. It is three races this year that the 735 failed to pick up power data in multisport. I have no issues on any training rides with it picking up the power meter and I didnt have the issue with my 920. I thought quarq fixed the moisture issue on newer models? I would be more suspect of a Garmin issue than the quarq.

I don't have time to look it up, but it sounds like your Garmin is in "search for new devices" mode by default and when you turn it on it wants to pair with everyone in the area. Once you have your power meter ID logged you need to turn that function off so it doesn't go looking for other devices.

Did you make sure that your 735 already found you power meter while in multi sport mode? If you do that, calibrate, then head off to the swim, it will be fine once you get back into T1. Do not turn the watch off or reset out of multi sport mode. You have to turn off the countdown feature that turns it off and returns back to the watch face. It took me all year and learned it this past weekend. Was driving me nuts as well. But it does work now, finds it again with no issues.

Please let me recommend Power2max Type S. No affiliation, just very satisfied customer who rode one for 2 seasons through all weather including massive rainstorms, etc, never a single hiccup, and friends with the same experience. So simple to use, battery lasts forever, damn thing just works perfect every time. I think you'll find others on the forum here with similar experience.

I have a P2M NG and a Garmin Edge 510. The combination has not proven to be very reliable. It worked for a 70.3 but for two sprint races I had a lot of dropped data, in the first it started working after a few minutes, in the second power data was useless.

Before the NG I used Garmin Vector 2 pedals, whilst no where near as reliable in training as the P2M (I have both an old first gen and NG), after about 30 seconds power data was there for every race of the past two seasons.

Wow thanks I have not done this and will try it. This is MUCH more helpful than Garmin Support to this point!! lol

Yeah I have no experience with the newer NG model. If I were buying another PM from them, I'd personally make a point of buying the S Type, as that is the one I've seen all positive reviews on, including my own experience.

Why are you searching for a new pm on race morning? This is likely your problem. You should not search for a new device on race morning EVER. The pm should already be paired to your computer so all you have to do is wake the pm up on race morning and the computer should automatically detect it. Do a zero offset and you are done.

When I have trouble connecting, I manually enter in the ANT ID from the Quarq spider in to the Garmin head unit. Then search again. That usually fixes the problem.

The quarq goes in to sleep mode while sitting idle. You need to rotate the cranks to wake it up first.

I am in the same boat - My Quarq is perfect during training, but have lost all connectivity during multiple races where the bike had stayed outside overnight or was raining during the event. I have sent the device back to Quarq twice, but now I am looking into switching to a different manufacture. I am using using a 2yr old Quarq Riken and maybe the new DZero has better waterproofing

I'm very curious to see what this thread turns up.

My Quarq is paired with a 510 head unit and a 920 watch. During training I don't wear the watch...just use the 510 for power metrics. pairing and connecting are fine while training.

For 3 of my last 4 races, the Quarq pairs and connects with the 920, but not the 510.

On race morning, I wake up the Quarq, and it immediately connects to the 920, and after about a minute, connects with the 510. I have auto power down and auto pause disabled on the 510....when I get out of the water, the Quarq has gone into sleep mode...so I expect a lag before I see power numbers on either the 920 or the 510. After the Quarq wakes up, it connects to the 920....but never connects to the 510.

Any ideas? Garmin supports says it has to be an issue with the Quarq. Quarq support doesn't seem to have a clear answer. So far, its a mystery. I even tested a race simulation the night before, and everything worked fine (although I don't think I waited long enough for the quarq to go into sleep mode)...something seems to happen when I "reawaken" the Quarq, and it doesn't want to connect to both Garmin units.

I will most likely get the quick release setup for the 920, and put it on a bike mount during a race (and just forget about the 510 for races).

It took PowerTap 9 years to fix their moisture and other issues. Quarq hasn't figured out how to make a reliable product yet. My advice would be to stop being a beta tester for them and switch to another brand (SRM, Verve, Shimano).

I'll have to try this, I never knew that there new device search was a default. Garmin has always recognized my device (except during races) when powered on at home.

I didn't realize that this was the default mode. Normally when I power the 510 on it automatically detects the power meter, I calibrate it, then start my ride. At races, it makes sense that it must be in this search all devices mode, I'll have to re-configure my Garmin. Thanks for the info.

Fair enough. What is the solution to my problem as described earlier in the thread, I don't think user error is the culprit, but I'm all ears for a solution,

You should never search for a new device on your head unit unless you are adding a device for the first time. Once you pair your pm to your Garmin the very first time, you never have to do it again. Go to your sensors page on the 510, you should see your pm listed along with any other devices (hr, speed/cadence). Once you wake up the quarq(spin the cranks), it will automatically connect to the 510 without you having to pair it again. Also, in the sensors page, go to your pm and turn on calibration prompt. So when you wake up the quarq, you'll get a notification if you want to do a calibration (zero offset).

Edit: what's actually happening during your race mornings is that you are trying to add a new device with a bunch of other pm's directly next to you and you are adding someone else's pm. You do not need to do this at a race or on any ride for that matter. You only do it on the first time you pair a new device to that head unit. Then never again.

^This.

Discovered this on the FR920 when creating a swim/run activity. I don't wear the HR monitor on swim and couldn't detect it when starting the run. Found that it would only find the HR monitor if I wore it prior to the swim and connected, took it off, then put it on again after the swim and before switching to run mode.

I understand what you are saying. However in my situation, the quarq connects fine before the race to both 920 and 510. 30 to 40 min later when I get out of the water and begin the bike leg, the 920 picks up the quarq when the power meter "wakes up", but the 510 NEVER picks the power meter up again...does that make sense. If you are stumped, don't worry, no one else can figure it out either. :)

edit: to be clear, I am NOT trying to pair my quarq to my 510 each and every time I race...the two automatically connect when the Garmin is power on and the quarq wakes up. The problem is, in T1, when I start pedaling, the 510 isn't finding the pwoermeter anymore, even though it did 30 minutes prior. the 920 however, will pick up the quarq without difficulty. Seems to me that the problem is the 510. wondering if anyone has further thoughts.

A friend of mine uses the Quarq-510 combo and has never had his powermeter working at races. Very consistent in training however. He fixed it by changing some "sleep" setting, dunno what. I use P2M/Verve+520 and it always works (ok, the garmin crashed once, requiring a restart).

I just realized I got you mixed up with the OP. I thought you were the OP. Sounds like you guys have different issues. My apologies....

Are you up to date with your 510 firmware? Have you tried using a friends edge 500/510/520 to see if that makes a difference? You probably won't want to here this but I'd be strongly considering getting a 520. It's really a great device and much better than a 510 IMO. I know that's not a good answer to fix your problem but I bet it would fix it nonetheless and you would get some of the cooler features that comes with the 520.

Firmware is all up to date.

Absolutely agree. I thought I'd end up getting a 520, but wanted to test the waters on ST.

I'm also considering using the 920 only, and using the quick release setup to place it on the bike for easy viewing. I did my last HIM looking at my watch while on my wrist to see power, and it sucked.
