That pretty well describes all the handy men I've ever hired. Usually the wife is the one with a better education, the higher paying job and is always the boss in the relationship. But the guy can fix stuff around the house.
That's probably because you can't afford to hire the good handymen.
Good handymen are hard to find though and apparently, it's because they're too busy with all the women...
I have definitely been propositioned by the wives of clients before. It's incredibly bizarre and rarely as sexy and exciting as it would seem.
Almost everyone I know who got ahead early in life did it with a trade. If you start an apprenticeship out of highschool, by 21 or 22, you can walk in to a good paying job with zero debt (money in the bank, actually, as you're paid to go to school) or start your own business. I know people who at 25-26 have several employees, a few rental properties, etc. while their University counterparts are still struggling with internships and considering going back to get a master's degree and take on more student debt.
It blows me away that people make comments like we're made above about living in intellectual and financial poverty... Spoken out of true ignorance.
People who see me at work, all dirty with a wrench in my hand, usually assume I'm a low income dirt bag.
There was an exchange with a guy not long ago...
I was doing a repair at a gas station and Rush Limbaugh was playing on my radio. Just 10 minutes prior the same radio station was playing Stephanie Miller (super liberal) who I also listen to (recently dropped from the station).
A guy filling up his Prius said, "it amazes me the people like you would listen to that guy."
So I asked him, "what do mean people like me?"
He said, "you know, hard working, blue collar,
low income."
I asked him where he lived and whether he rented or owned his home.
Lompoc, rents.
I said, "and
you are calling
me low income?"
My father-in-law's next door neighbor is a plumber. He's making money hand over fist.
He's a dirt bag too.
