for all the talk on here about a decline in triathlon, there sure are a lot of bike companies in the industry.

Well you can -1, cause Guru as a company is gone. With these #'s there'll be more I am sure. More energy to build than demand dictates imo.

Isn't Argon 18 a bit of a ++ surprise @ #5?

No surprise with Argon. They were 5th last year with 101 and launched 4 new tri bikes in 2015...

The brands that are displayed are those that were leading in year one of the graph
Frodo winning last year hasn't helped Canyon. The availability of the trickle down model might make a difference for next year.
BMC are going very well

I'd pick the most underrated brands as: Orbea, Fuji and Boardman - they all make fast, adjustable and affordable bikes.
Look make a very fast and adjustable bike but the affordable criterion is a matter of perspective

Does the Kona (championship event) bike count represent the pointy end of the field? Where as a sample from the local race scene(s) should produce a different count.

Kona bike count represents the participating bikes at Kona World Championship. Anything else is an assumption. Local races would be even more prone to variation because of the local nature, i.e. smaller races would show a bias towards brands more represented by the local bike dealers, as well influenced by local social and economic conditions.

I know there are some brands that inflate their Kona numbers by giving qualifiers cut rate deals. Any sense what brands pump the numbers the most this way?

Every brand that isn't #1 always tries to improve their standings. However, this is just one race and most of us realize that. We prefer to see higher numbers at sprints and 70.3's as those are the athletes who are just getting into the sport. The reality is Kona athletes aren't purchasing new bikes at the same rate they did even a few years ago. It used to be 5-7 years, a new bike would be purchased, now we are at 9-11 years. The glut of overstock is the issue, most companies are having issues moving enough bikes to maintain year over year sales.
