Damn strait. And x2 on the LOUD. All LZ should be cranked. I have been a headphones guy since the bean bag era. I will also vote for zep's Rock and Roll. That song is just tight, every instrument, every riff, right where it's supposed to be.

Band in its prime, hitting on all cylinders.

My kind of drumming. No fancy solos just solid rhythm through some crazy changes in tempo.

Solid base line too.

Ah, see? By concentrating on the drums you are opened to the rolling, meandering yet firmly anchored bass line.

Also, keep in mind that Bonham used a single bass drum which on occasion he makes sound like doubles.

And the gaps, the shit he doesn't hit are almost as important as what he does play.

Bonzo was just unbelievable. I could never play like him....at all. The feel is just so difficult to reproduce. The guy just absolutelty grooves. Thanks for posting this song. I'll have to work on it for a while before getting frustrated.

I've always thought of the big three in rock being Peart, Bonzo, and Moon (not specifically in that order), with all three being completely different talents.

If anyone has ever seen the TV show Freaks and Geeks, there was a funny episode where the dad told his daughter's drummer friend that Neil Peart sucked. After arguing a bit, they went to the living room and the dad played him Gene Krupa and Buddy Rich. It was pretty amusing. Lots of great jazz drummers out there, though jazz isn't really my thing.

There are a lot of other Zep songs where the drumming is really good but this one (for me) is done with the music as good or better than any of them. The way it pairs with the bass is just too good.

Other songs not mentioned yet where the drums really make me want to be a drummer are...

Achilles Last Stand

The Crunge

Kashmir

Re: Peart. He's great but I just don't really get into him. He's (sorta) like the drumming equivalent to Steve Vai on guitar.

A drummer who I think goes unnoticed (sometimes) is Stewart Copeland. His beats are just so weird.

I saw a video that he was in a while back (can't remember what it was even about). It was just him playing the drums for Walking on the Moon and it took me a minute or two to even recognize there was a beat there and I didn't know what song it was until they laid the rest of the music over it.

Jazz? Yeah, I don't know enough about it.

Listen to it again. It isn't "fairly basic". That's the one of the things about Bonham. On the surface a lot of his stuff sounds basic. Listen to Levee with headphones and just listen to the drums. He's got this triple bass hit going (remember he's only using one bass drum) that is unreal and incredibly difficult. He recorded that "live" in a stairwell with the mic a couple floors above him, btw.

Well, that's the thing. JPJ was improvising the bass throughout the whole song but he was feeding off the drums. I think what a lot people miss about Zep is that JPJ and Bonham were really the meat of the band that allowed Plant to wale away and Page to jam. Honestly, Page's guitar work is fairly sloppy. The bass/drum combo was so tight it held it all together. I heard somewhere that when Bonham died, JPJ basically just said "it's over." And that was the end of them.

But yeah, totally agree. The bass is pretty fucking awesome in that song.

Yeah, I know you are not really into Neil Peart, but it's awesome.

And listening to it on youtube doesn't really cut it (for any good music). Gotta pull it up at least on CD, vinyl, or spottily premium 320 kps.

My declaration of John Bonham's drumming on The Lemon Song being the best rock and roll drum track ever laid down isn't entirely based on technical prowess. In fact, technique has hardly anything to do with it. It's one of the reasons it's so good. You don't even think of drumming technique when listen to it. He's not shredding on the drums with a back up band. He's in a band and, along with JPJ, making it all hold together.

My favorite part of that one is still the closed Hi-hat; the way he whacks that makes it sound like he's beating on a high-pitched garbage can lid... Like you said, he does maybe the best job of anyone at combining sophisticated chops in kind of a 'low-tech' wrapper. I dig me some Black Dog, too. That and Whole Lotta Love ~ one thing I notice in common with him and both Peart & Copeland is how they'll play their straight rhythm beats in alternating patterns every other bar (or more) instead of the same backbeat every bar.

Peart is bad-ass in his own way; gotta be the crispest, tightest mofo ever. Tom Sawyer is certainly the stronger overall piece of work, but YYZ is like the ultimate case of a band just showing off because they can.

Edit: my other fave drummer is like the anti-Peart... Nick Mason from PF. He's the absolute master at the most laaaaaid back beats ever ~ the fills on 'Fearless' are so languorous and dreamy it feels like he's about to fall asleep. Even when they're cooking on 'Hi' (by Floyd standards) like during the guitar solo from Time, Nick is still working way late on the back half of the beat which gives it all a little deeper groove against the soaring guitar.

The thing I like about him is the technical aspect and he is a total percussionist. He can play anything in the family and often incorporates them all in his solos. While Bonham probably was as well it just wasn't part of their music as it is part of Rush's.

I have nothing against Peart and recognize that he's an extremely good drummer. I just think Bonham works better in a band situation than Peart.

It's like Rush, because they only have 3 members, has little dick complex so they felt they had make a huge sound. Whereas another 3 piece band (with huge cocks), The Police, embraced their numbers and made minimalist music (with another great drummer, Stewart Copeland).

I didn't take it as a criticism of Peart's work and understand your liking of Bonham and don't disagree. I do believe there is a lot of soul in Bonham's work and lack of it in Peart's. You have more than effectively stated your position of Peart's ability, I was only stating I really enjoy the technical aspects of his work, similar to watching a drumline stick work.

Tools Danny Carey has been mentioned but specifically "Ticks and Leaches"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RelR85j09XY

If you search for any of the covers you'll actually see just how technical and challenging the drumming is.

Tool has so many complex layers to their songs but yeah, their drummer is soooooo good.

There are times where I can't listen to the originals on Led Zeppelin. Like the album version of Kashmir for instance. How they recorded it annoys me, I think they used spacial expansion on the drum track, and it sounds bad to me. Just my opinion.

With that, I love Jason Bonham's version of Kashmir on Celebration Day. He plays this quite well, there is a lot of expression, and synergy as well.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PD-MdiUm1_Y

Even on YouTube the recording quality and the feel comes through. He plays it differently, and uses two different splash cymbals which gives a nice feel. If I remember correctly, his father only used one splash in this.

I'm resurrecting this thread to recommend a documentary I just watched on Netflix: Beware Mr. Baker.

I haven't reviewed this thread to see if Ginger Baker was mentioned. I wasn't a fan of the artwork/animation in the beginning of the show but stuck with it and ended up giving it five stars. Just a fascinating story about a man. Compelling story on its own, but a must watch for any fan of drummers. (Calling BarryP)

Listening to some The Cream right now. I'm not someone who normally notices the drumming (I'm a guitar guy), but I paying attention now, I have new found appreciation for Ginger Baker.

On a technical note, for the two cream songs I listened to Sunshine of your Love and Tales of Great Ulysses, I was not pleased with the recordings (Clapton CD compilation). Drum track is only in left channel and guitar in right. That diminishes drums, at least in with my set-up. Put in CD of Lemon Song and it was better as drums were in both tracks (more left I think).

Peart also wrote the vast majority of the lyrics to Rush songs, including all of the mythological stuff from the 70s, so the guy is definitely creative.

Love both Peart and Copeland - for the reasons mentioned above. Peart - supreme technician, plays frickin' ever percussion instrument ever invented, foundation of the "wall" of sound that Rush creates (some like that, some don't). Copeland - much more jazzy, funky, cool, whatever...but also a good technician. And he writes some decent lyrics, too.

Both Peart and Copeland (and others) make brief appearances commenting on Ginger Baker in the documentary I referenced a couple of posts above. Peart refers to Baker as his inspiration when he was 14.

Fans of Bonham and Moon, probably wouldn't appreciate Baker's view of them, nor Clapton's.

This is an outstanding documentary. I found it amusing how ginger had contempt for bozo when people mentioned him as a quality drummer.

Tales of brave Ulysses is great. I once dropped acid along the mighty Columbia. I spent a good portion of the evening wading in the river eating sea grass with tales of brave Ulysses playing in my head. Great song.

I'm ten months late responding to this. But I got the urge tonight to start playing "Message in a Box" the complete recordings of the Police. Also I've been reading the story in notes accompanying this four CD box.

Copeland, Summers, and Sting worked their butts off to get their success. They had released their first album pretty much gone nowhere. Roxanne and Can't Stand Losing You did nothing. Then Copeland's brother sent them on a tour of the USA, playing college towns for $200 a night, carting their gear themselves, all sleeping on one motel room. Then a year after releasing the album, after the touring, in 1979 Roxanne hit the charts in the US. The song was re-released in the UK and then "Can't Stand Losing You" and both became hits.

And that is just the middle of the story, with each of the trio having quite a story before the band formed.

Copeland and co, earned their success and are talented and good.

But have you watched the Rush documentary?

I've mentioned it elsewhere, if not in this thread. Rush: Beyond the Lighted Stage. Watch it with your son.

Not a big Rush fan? Well are you a fan of decent people? Do you watch stories about decent people with your son? I connected with my son -- older than yours -- with this show. It is an interesting story, about interesting guys. But above all it tells the story of two guys who were best friends in high school, formed a band, made it big, and remain best friends -- and seemingly normal geeks -- today. It includes interviews with the guys -- ready for this -- parents. Even a grinch like you would have to smile a bit watching that. One of the guys goes through a dark phase -- maybe you can relate -- and comes out.

Nevermind. Watch a superhero fantasy with your son or show him one of your favorite pornos.

I loved that album from Daltrey, had several good tracks including After the Fire and Move Better in the Night. For the title track and the drum solos at the end, Copeland's is so distinct from the other's with that crisp unique sound of his. Also like Martin Chambers' lead-off, he's another one of my faves who I've always felt never got the credit he was due.

Interesting. BTW, the movie that it is referencing is Quadrophenia for those who may not have heard of it. Its actually a decent movie.

On a side note, I'm working on learning Won't Get Fooled Again, which is IMO the best drum track ever written. I recorded it a few years ago, but I'm a better drummer now and want to do it again.

I'll add I'm a big fan of Matt Cameron. He's done such a wide variety of stuff. The track from Jesus Christ Pose always gets stuck in my head. Reptile (Skin Yard) had a cool non-standard time signature. And he's done other stuff like The Wellwater Conspiracy that's not in the grunge category.
