USAT Age Group Olympic Nats Roll call 2014 - Milwaukee, WI
Quote | Reply
M45-49 here from Omaha. I qualified at a Regional Qualifier and made it on the 33% bubble so I'll be fighting for last place in my age category. Just really excited to be going and competing against the fastest Ag'rs in the country! Good luck everyone!

A little off topic (one post in...) but I went to school in Omaha and have to ask - where on earth do you train? Do you live out west somewhere?

I'm in for the sprint. (45-49)

I'd like to get on Team USA again but I won't be in the top 10. I'll either be 15th or 40th :/

I will be participating in the M OLY 45-49. Please note the qualifier.....Wink

My only goal is not to be DFL. I have been focusing on my first IM for training and just finished a big volume week yesterday. I expect my legs to be pretty dead next weekend.

I would likely never travel to Nats since I am not competitive on that level, but Milwaukee is only an hour away, so why not?

I'm racing the Sprint M30-35. Heading all the way from Salt Lake City, UT.

Would love to make top 25, and based on last year's times I would be somewhere around 15-18th .... so depending how many more BAMFs show up this year hoping to get to Chicago I'll be on the bubble.

M45-49 qualified on the bubble at a small local sprint. Feel a bit of a poser for that reason, but i decided to make 2014 about experiencing races since I took 2013 "seriously" for an IM. NOLA, Escape, SOS, so decided to add AG Nationals to the list, because frankly no clue as to when or if I'd ever qualify again. It's a bit of an expense from So Cal, but that's why I work :)

In for both races! M25-29, not sure where I qualified (I race way too much and I know it). Making the long drive from NY starting Wednesday morning, staying in Cleveland, then getting in Thursday to buy some downtime and not stress too much.

Racing the sprint - 55-59. A relative long shot for the top 25. I'm going to have to pull something special out of my suitcase of courage. First short course nationals since the mid 90s in Chicago and probably my most important race in more than a decade. Looking forward to racing a major event with my best friends and teammates.

M50-54 Olympic, qualified in a local sprint and almost fell over when I got the invite email from USAT, this is my first year swimming, and my first year doing triathlon. If you see someone backstroke occasionally that's me. I'm almost certain I'll be last out of the water, but hope to avoid last place in age group by catching up to 1 or 2 racers during the bike and run.

I've read your post for years and figured we are living a simlar tri life in different part of the conuntry. Seems w both have been at it for years, now focused on sprints, the thrill of being a virgin long past. Didnt you write for Triathlon Today also?

I will be there also 55-59 racing the sprint with no realistic chance at top 25. Not gonna happen. (I should have picked my parents more carefully). But thought I would drive from the Twin Cities and give it a whirl (first nationals ever in 29 seasons).

You can draft my feet in the swim if you think it would help....(likely not) but if we run into each other this weekend I will give you a knowing nod and a high five.

In for the Oly, M45-49. We are leaving Dallas on Wednesday afternoon and stopping somewhere around St. Louis. Then doing the remainder of the drive on Thursday. Hoping to put in a decent showing and if everything goes right, I might sneak in the tail end of the qualify in my AG.

We are making a serious road trip out of this adventure. After we finish in Milwaukee, we are heading to Chicago for 2 days, then hit up some family in Michigan for a day before heading over to Sandusky, Oh to spend a few days at Cedar Point. Then down to Kentucky, Tennessee, and then back to Dallas. 2500 miles total in 10 days. Should be a fun trip.

I've been on a bit of a slump with some disappointing performances my last 3 races so I am hoping for a confidence booster going into the OLY at Edmonton. Hoping it is just as much fun and perfect weather as it was last year, great race venue!

Also at the pfister, and signed up for pretty much all the ancillary stuff, which I rarely/never do, but since the wife and kids decided to skip this one and I don't want to cruise around Milwaukee on a tri bike Saturday evening, it seemed like the best use of my time.

LOL! I agree 100%!!

I'm "racing" in the Oly, M40-44. Just looking to PR the course from last year. If I match my run and swim, my much improved bike should shave off a couple minutes. Really is amazing how fast some of you are. I'm envious.

Let me guess you'll race the swim/bike then jog a nice easy 36:00 (slower than 70.3 pace) or so since you'll probably be in the top 2 at that point already.

Now you'll only kick my ass by about 1 minute less.

I guess Steelhead is on your way back home, so why not race it. Good thing I think 35-39 goes off first at nationals.

Thought about it - maybe not to derail this thread, but as its own. Then I got a little paranoid and worried that it might be bulletin board material for the 26 guys in the "close" category. They're the ones I'm really competing with for Worlds.

How did you put your list together? I did a quick comparison of the M40-44 Oly list to the current USAT rankings. I am in the top 15-20 or so entries after removing the 44 year olds who will actually be racing for a M45-49 spot on the US team. However, I did not go back and guess which 39 year olds will be racing for a M40-44 spot. Makes it difficult to know if you have a spot after the race because they have to do the "age up" adjustment before handing out US team spots.

But I think I am in the hunt which is all the motivation I need! ;-)

USAT rankings probably would have been smarter. I used Athlinks and did a quick sort - if they smoked me in a common race (mainly Nationals last year or Chicago ITU this year) or laid down an Olympic under 2:10 I put them on the "faster" list.

If times in recent common races were close or OD races were between 2:10 and 2:20, I put them in "close". Sometimes with no common races or recent OD races I'd dig into their splits/ finish place in sprints.

It should be a much faster race this year than last year. Last year it looks like 18th was 1:09:46, 25th was 1:12:57. 54 men started. Last time I checked this year it is up to 122 guys racing. I can't imagine anything over 1:08 gets in top 25 this year.

Add my buddy "Turningscrews" to that list.... or wait...never mind... I think he's trying to fly under the radar. Like it matters.

Pretty cool, possibly the best battle of the day will be right out of the gate, 1st wave. Not sure if that was intentional or not.

Add my buddy "Turningscrews" to that list.... or wait...never mind... I think he's trying to fly under the radar. Like it matters.

Pretty cool, possibly the best battle of the day will be right out of the gate, 1st wave. Not sure if that was intentional or not.

Yes! I agree! I'm also in for OLY F50-54, representing darkhorse tri.

Looks like I will be fighting for scraps in the M35-39... My best case scenario leaves me with a 2:03.

For those that raced this course last year, is it blazing fast? Appears to be very flat.

There are some dudes in our AG group that have sub 4:20 HIM that never race OD.. your list might be leaving some of them out!!

I will be there for the 35-39 men.. should be done and drunk by 10am!

Is supposed to be the west coast, but that is what is was supposed to be last year but I heard they could not find an RD and location
that anyone wanted to give up.

Folks can bug Tim and team this weekend. If nothing is said, I will try to bug Tim at Edmonton in 3 weeks. :o)

In for the Oly 35-39....looking for a top 20 and hoping to go sub 2:05....

My real goal is to make the USA Team...and I'm 39, so I'll be competing with the 40-44 age group for that. With the added 7 slots per age group and top 25 getting a slot, I'm hopeful even without a perfect race.

I am only racing the olympic.. We start at 7:20.. Done at 9:22.. First beer in hand at 9:36.. Second beer will be bottoms up by 9:58.. And at my skinny ass little race weight, with limited alchohol consumption since June 1st, I will be officially DRUNK.. And loving it!!

I don't know where I fit in. Bottom step of the AG podium to "I wish I had made team USA" bubble boy.. Somewhere between those two, I presume.

I tried exporting the current list of AA from USAT Rankings into excel, but had limited success.. The plan was to import entry lists AND AA list.. Then sort by last name and see what names where on both lists.. Those will be the guys that have a chance at worlds. By this time in the season the USAT Ranking system is fairly accurate IMHO.

M 40-45 sprint here.

I haven't been in a national event since college, so I'm really looking forward to a big crowd and cool venue...and a good bike. I was a good 2 MPH slow in my last race and I cannot figure out why. Perhaps wearing a watch or using a computer would have helped, but I am very stubborn (see next point). Willing to walk on the 5k run in front of God and everybody in order to make the bike happen. If you see an old dude in yellow walking on the run, ask me about my bike split!

Have a good time, everyone.

The combination of Chicago AND the loss of Vegas as the HIM worlds is going to make this an incredibly DEEP race. 2:00 won't get you on 20-45 AG Podium.. Considering they are 10 deep that is crazy fast! I can't wait. I hope to get caught up in all the emotion (some fast feet on the swim, a legal draft on the bike) and run in with a 1:59.999999999

Hopefully not bursting your bubble, but don't forget the age up rule. If someone is 30-34 this year, but will be 35 next year puts them in the 35-39 pools for worlds. Likewise with a 39 year old going up to 40-44. For the 35-39, it typically is more fast people aging into the AG than aging out. So the 2:02:40 may end up being outside the top 25.

Hopefully you get a spot, but you are very much on the bubble.

Really was a great venue. I had no legs to run on after trying to hammer the bike and close on the fast mofos in my age group (35-39). Swim was like an IM washing machine until after the bridge. Should have positioned myself better at the start line. Bike was great for an OLY in my opinion. For the most part flat but with the bridges to keep it honest. Kind of wish I had signed up for the sprint as well.
Good luck !

Very happy with my result today. Beautiful day.

Had 3 goals going in:
1) top ten AG M35-39: check - finished 9th
2) beat last years time of 2:01:56: check - 2:00:14
Reaching goal 3) sub 2 hour: missed by 14 seconds

Just missed #3, but very happy with my result. Crazy that I beat my time from last year but was one spot farther down. Very, very competitive field today. My wave was also first wave today so less people to deal with on the bike and slightly cooler conditions as well.

I would be happy to come back here a third year as is a great venue for a race. Where ever they choose for 2015 will have large shoes to follow.

I might be in luck, there are 6 guys in 45-49 who are 49, so they will be bumped into 50-54 but there are 6 guys in 40-44 who are 44 with faster times then me. So they will get a priority, and then I know Cam isn't going, so I am back to needing 3 more guys to pass in my AG. Christ, it would have been easier to train more an run faster then do this math...

So glad I came out from so cal for this. 10 minute oly pr (granted haven't done one since 2012), bike pr and run pr (and I think a 10k pr, oly or standalone). And was only a mile or so behind Bryancd (more like the "or so" but he wasn't finished by the time I started running so that's a win): To top it off, a local mke friend came down with a cooler full of local mke brews and we sat and shot the shit while the super sprints went off. Thanks, on that back half of the bike (you know, after you passed me....) there were a few draft packs I had to power around to avoid drafting issues and was worried I'd tanked my run before taking the bike shoes off, but I think I PRd my 10k, standalone or otherwise. I had, for me personally, a great day. PR'd by 5 minutes and had my fastest run ever in a race, averaging 7:16's. My fastest previous avg was 7:40's. Also set a new AP record @ 267w. Guess I have anew FTP.

I was nothing more than pack fodder for the M45-49 for the race, but went inside the top 40 on the bike.

After being hurt every year since I stated tri's in 2009 (including this year w/ a calf strain), to see that kind of improvement was satisfying.

Field was just crazy competitive. Swim never really broke upper and passing people on the bike was not easy! Amazing the difference in a race where nearly everyone is fast!!

Had a lot of fun today.

Yes, I am a Sports Med Orthopedic Surgeon and got 9th in M35-39. This is my second nationals and next year will be second on Team USA. Trained much less this year due to the eventful birth of my daughter this winter. As my training time gets less and less, I have upped the intensity. Most weeks this year about 6 hours with a couple recent 8 hour weeks in the past month. Nothing more than 8 hours.

Take this with a grain of salt, however, as I have many miles in these legs and time in the saddle in years past when I was doing IM's from 2008-2012 and from many years of racing have developed a very strong mental focus. Also, I thank my Mom and Dad for good genes which you realize is very important when you see those on the podium at Nationals, particularly the older AG. It is amazing how good those on the podium in the 50+ AG look. Most look at least a decade younger. So don't blame your job, maybe blame your parents.

Loved the swim but start was crazy fast and rough. Front 1/2 of bike great, back 1/2 horribly rough with construction scenery, run course was really flat, fast and scenic. Overall A- as a host city and i totally get why MLK gets it again next year. Great destination race!

Interesting your response versus Dnowak above. Your answer is to make more sacrifices and train more, his is that he is genetically gifted and can do it on 6hrs/wk of specific/intense training. I imagine everyone who was racing this weekend puts in the hard work. I personally question that if I could train 18hrs/wk I would be able to perform at that level. Putting in those kind of hours could certainly be limited by career/family obligations. So I guess I'm leaning a bit toward inherent athleticism over training comittment as the answer to be able to perform at that level.

As much as I hate the short stuff, this race was a blast. I PR'd every split and found myself in 20th M35-39 within ~15 seconds of about 10 guys. I can imagine me sitting home reading results and thinking "I could suck that up and make the front of the pack." I think each of us were sucking it up, though. We rounded the turn at mile 4 and it was like we all felt impeding doom and wicking it up.

I'm thinking ironman is easier.

My favorite part was the super sprint. THAT was awesome. I can't imagine diving back in for the 2nd swim. Does anyone know the story of the shaved barefoot chick that was stalking Starky on the 2nd Run?

To further clarify my post, IMO genetics set the ceiling. It is then up to you to get as close to that ceiling as possible with smart training, smart recovery and smart racing. Even though I train less, I continue to increase my wattage in key sets on my CT from year to year. I also more value recovery now than 5 years ago when I was doing 16-20 hours.

Most people are no where near their ceiling so to blame it all on genetics would be am excuse. It takes years (not one 18 hour a week year) to get there. It also takes years to figure out what training works best for you and to devolpe the mental toughness to race. How often do you see AGers collapse after finishing an Olympic compared to the pros? The pros know how to push it to another level that the common AGer doesn't.

Lastly, the beauty of having a good job is you can buy free speed (eg. fastest bike, disc, helmet, etc). So there are definitely some upsides to being a surgeon.

So at awards they said Worlds would go 30 deep in each AG. When they did the age up adjustments, I was 30th. They had anyone outside of the top 25 to indicate their interest in a slot, so I did.

I followed the instructions from the USAT email that only the top 25 would be able to reserve a spot last night. I did the age up and penalty math and judged I was at #30 in M40-44 so I didn't go to the awards dinner. Did they say anything about the rolldown notification process? Thanks.

I just looked at the rules and could not find anything saying it was wrong. My mistake but sure thought I have heard of something about this in the past.

Yep, last year on the west coast, 2008. So, been 6 years and not looking like it will be out her for a while. I hear the off the record possible reasons, would love
to have USAT on the record. Will try to talk to Tim directly at Edmonton. Tim is a very honest guy and always gets back to folks. It probably just comes
down to who is willing to host with a decent venue. I do not believe USAT is not trying to get back to the West Coast. If USAT put nationals somewhere in
Northern California, maybe they could be 10000 folks in the races. :o)

My buddy raced in a speedo and nice bushy mustache. He had spectators calling him Dave Scott on the run course.

He asked on Friday if they would DQ for a bare torso and they said it would be legal.

Interesting. We left after the race, but I was 32nd... I checked today and 4 people that beat me age up, and only 3 people will age into the 35-39 ahead of me. So i'm 31st and based on your statement above should be the first roll down spot?

Did they mention how the roll down process would work?

Great Race, my 1st time doing it...

Didn't have a great performance, finishing 13 mins slower than my Oly PR ( especially on that fast course) and in the bottom third of my age... I was injured in june and took about a month off.... blah, blah, blah...That being said, I have renewed my commitment for the Oly Distance and am planning on being in MKE next year!

Everyone was awesome from USAT, the competitors, the city and the volunteers!! Also, great to be on the course with such high national level talent...

Last night at awards they said:Team is USA is top 25. Will roll to at least 30. Then added that it will roll further if you are within 3% of the 25th person's time. Not sure exactly how far that will be, but easily calculated. Sounds like they are trying to fill 25 spots in every age group they can to maximize team USA size.

Best thing to do is just email the teamusa email on website and say you are interested so you are included in any possible roll down.

Great race at the sprint today, that was some fast competition even for the short race! I had a good race and squeaked in top 10 (9th) in my age group, basically ALL on the bike (came out of the water 38th!).

Then 6th through 10th in my group (F45-49) ended up separated by a total about 15 seconds- quite a race.

I'd come back to MKE next year, it was a good venue, a little complicated getting around before/after, but otherwise nice.

Oh, side note on the Chicago Worlds date- they are waiting to see which early weekend in Sept 2015 the Bears play at home- the race will be the other weekend so it doesn't conflict. Never thought of that kind of schedule issue! I just hope it doesn't end up the same as IMWI.

Loved the swim but start was crazy fast and rough. Front 1/2 of bike great, back 1/2 horribly rough with construction scenery, run course was really flat, fast and scenic. Overall A- as a host city and i totally get why MLK gets it again next year. Great destination race!

Yep that was me. Some thought I was crazy but even that estimate was off. My best case scenario had me going 2:03.xx and I went low 2:04. Overall very happy with my race and time. Just for fun I looked back at last year's results and my time would have placed me 17th vs the 32nd that I placed yesterday.

This was a great event, glad I signed up (last minute, got in as spots opened up last week). PR'd the OLY distance by minutes, my best ever swim and bike splits, bike course was probably the flattest I've been on however. Talk about a stacked field, a 2:18 would be a pretty good time at local tri's but only good enough for 85th in M45-49!

That was the roughest swim start I've ever had, had guys swimming into me from BOTH left and right. I thought for sure my swim split would suck because of that. PR'd my swim split by about 30 seconds!

Anybody know at what distance was that run turnaround split? I'm guessing it was near mile 4.

Yup, 2:19 was mid packish, 94/215. Crazy fast.

I imagine this is what Kona swim is like, most any IM an hour swim you get some clear water, but Kona crowded the whole way. Low 20s in most Olys, should get clear water, didn't clear up until near the turn around

Yes, mile 4 was just after the turn. Per my 910 the signs were slightly off (close enough) but run was right on 6.2

Rubbing alcohol and hard scrubbing. To speed things up I used one of those green scouring pads from the kitchen. I like the tape idea, I might try that next time. I heard baby oil also works similar to rubbing alcohol.

Had a TOTAL blast in the race and PR'd by a ton and still came in 176/215 mens 45-49 but I'll take it! What an event had so much fun I was very impressed the morning of was a piece of cake getting in and parked and into transition had a lot of extra time. Even having to wait until 9:40 for our wave wasnt bad since I got to watch my SIL race in womens 35-39 for most of her race. What a beautiful venue and well organized. How about that ramp out of the water!?? Ended up not being an issue with all the folks helping along the rails. Roads were a little beat up on the 2nd half of the bike but I'm used to terrible roads in Nebraska so didnt bother me too bad. Well done USAT and MKE.

It was a great venue and a great race. The swim course was by far the best course I have ever raced. The bridge was cool to swim under and despite there being lots of fast swimmers I had very little contact in the water, but I was towards the front my of the first wave, so it might have gotten worse for later waves. I actually wished there weren't any volunteers on the ramp out of the water. I had a much easier time getting out during the practice swim than where I could grab the rail than I did in the race where I had to grab a volunteer.

Agreeing in general about the bummer it is not to have the race back on the west coast, but with that said, I think it would be pretty hard to beat Milwaukee as far as a venue. My dad and I spent a good hour brainstorming where you could possibly run it in the Seattle area, and couldn't come up with anything that we would rather see over Milwaukee. The combo of hotels, downtown, race venue, fresh water, perfect weather, etc. will be hard to match. To be able to shut down a massive waterfront road without inconveniencing many, if any businesses is pretty amazing and would be very hard to do in a similar downtown setting.

Quick question for everyone/locals.

I was hearing rumors as we were leaving that the 1st/north out and back along with the Hoan Bridge is going to be repaved. Any confirmation on that? I have no idea on if Lincoln Memorial will be repaved or not, the Hoan I believe is scheduled to be finished by next summer.

I agree on the pavement not being too bad with the exception of the area around transition, but there is nothing quite like racing on fresh black top.

It's literally one of the only things I think USAT could really do to improve on the event this year. You have to dig pretty deep to find much that went wrong or can be improved upon.

True for Seattle. The waterfront is no go. That leaves lake WA and that's far from hotels. Anyone can put together a race at some lakeside park. Nats are supposed to be grand. What about downtown Portland? Swim in the river. Bike out without disrupting traffic should be easy. Portland is bike friendly as is. Run on the waterfront. Maybe a loop down to one bridge and across and back over another bridge?

There are some awesome venue possibilities out in the Redmond/Issaquah area but then you loose all the hotels. I'm not familiar enough with Portland to brainstorm, but have enough where-about's to follow what you are saying. Could work nicely. Both the old Rev3 Portland and Portland Triathlon start in a fairly downtown area I believe?

You should become a RD, then bid on the race. from what I'm hearing there wasn't a suitable west coast race that bid on it. You could be that race.

That is what I am hearing unofficially. I wonder what the bid terms are? I keep thinking of all the races in northern calif I do would any be a great place for
Nationals. Folsom would seem to be the best, but one has to think about parking for that many folks which makes it tough.

I agree re MKE, my first time there. Easy to get to, less than a 4 hour flight from LAX, direct (at least on the way out). I have no complaints, the only thing being "bad pavement" but that's at every race, and honestly I've raced on a lot worse. People were talking about the expansion joints on the bridge as a problem, so I was expecting huge gaps. The ones that were uncovered were better than the ones that had the rubber mats on them IMO.

Bag issue was a PITA for the Friday pre swim, since I was on my own, and had too much crap to get into the bag. Luckily, TBT was there so just stored everything there, and it made me more efficient on race day.

I understand weather could be a little warmer/muggier under normal conditions. I thought it was perfect

San Diego hosted an ITU, no reason they couldn't host a race like that?

I also like the pullover (definitely a slim fit cut) rather than another t shirt.

Having done both San Diego ITU and the MKE course, MKE is far superior in almost every aspect: travel, parking, traffic, swim venue, bike venue (several no-passing zones at SAN). Run was a bit more fun at SAN though (for a short while along the beach). I would definitely race Nats at MKE again, but would probably skip SAN. Felt I had to hold back on the bike course too much due to congestion and the no-pass zones.

I would have no interest in San Diego. Just too far way.

Northern California would be so great since you can attract so many folks from the entire west coast equally from the bottom to the top of the country.

Oh well, makes it so easy to not have to worry about nationals next year, saves money to pay for another trip with the family to Disneyland. Even though we
are going 9 days in Oct, already picked the dates for the end of sept in 2015. (I can still be tahoe again if I want. :o) )

I can see that. I actually had no interest in driving down to the ITU, so..... And it's probably rare that a city can close down a highway like the Hoan bridge for a day or two. I sorta liked that the "nationals" was not in/near my hometown. Made it more of an event than "just another race."

MKE actually had a pretty nice section of beach to run on. In fact, I think that's the best Oly run course i've done. had a little of everything (except climbing :) )

I get you want it close to you, but you should change your argument to "near me" and not "west coast." Granted I may not have read all of your posts on the matter, but I only recall the ones saying on the west coast. After travel time, having it in northern california is only marginally more convenient for me, just a couple less hours on the plane (and likely more expensive for lodging). For me MKE felt like an "event." This was a relatively last minute quick trip for me, but if I am lucky enough to qualify next year I would bring my wife. As for the race, it's realyl one of the better courses I've done in 10 years, easily the best Oly course I've ever done.

And I applaud you for spending that time with something your wife wants to do. That is important in the relationship

But seriously, what the hell do you do at Disneyland for NINE DAYS! LOL, we went a couple months ago for my wife's birthday, had a great time but were exhausted after 1 day! And there's like 4 good rides at California Adventure and maybe 5-6 at Disneyland (i know, grandkids do all of them :) )

And I'd be curious (don't need to share, maybe a ballpark?) what's an expected budget for 9 days at Disneyland? my god.... they even charge for frickin iPhone charging stations! Disney never misses an opportunity to expand the empire.

It may be in MKE again in 2015 out of convenience because of DU Nats in St. Paul again in 2015. They can haul out all the gear from CO Springs to St. Paul in July and then move on to MKE in August without hauling it back???

My understanding is that both short course triathlon nationals and duathlon short course nationals are going to be draft legal.

The bummer is if they use ITU rules then it's a TT bike for the oly and a road bike for the sprint.
(and I think they should have no aerobars on the sprint if it's draft legal)

I talked to a USAT staffer at the table at the awards ceremony where they were asking men to indicate on the results sheet whether they wanted to go to Worlds. She said they would first contact those in 26th to 30th place if there were roll down spots available.

Loved the venue. Thanks Milwaukee.

When folks ask about how to convince their wife to buy a bike, what did the wife get?

Well, Edmonton is probably 5K. So, the wife and kids and grandkids love disneyland, so they get their moneys worth.

I never want to go back to Disneyland, but this is what the wife gets for supporting me and all the races I do.

9 days, well 4 days with one of my kids and grandkid, 1 day with just the wife and I, then another 4 days with my other kid and grandkids.

Nah, I continue to say west coast since it would be wrong to say I wanted it close to me. Now certain parts of the west coast would not interest me,
but if I have to get on a plane, I have no interest.

Disneyland budget. Well, we all drive in a car together to share expenses. We all stay in the same hotel room to share expenses. We are
buying an season pass to make it cheaper. I can go a couple of times compared to one trip to Nationals back east.

To be honest, Olympics are so short in duration that it's impossible to try and reverse engineer your results, so it's a fools errand. Your training was likely appropriate for the race as it wasn't your first rodeo. When it comes down to seconds, it's the vagaries of chance and circumstance, not desire or ability. For what it's worth. :) That's why I like long course better. I didn't start feeling good on the run until mile 3!

On the subject of world's slots...the original plan was that we would have to put down a $50 dollar deposit to claim out slots correct? Does anyone know what happened with that? I think they realized it was going to be a madhouse trying to collect $50 in credit cards or checks from hundreds of athletes the day of the race, and fell back to just letting people double check their name & email address, so they can send out official announcements (and get you to register) over the next week or two.

had a tough day on Saturday... started the swim and somehow on the first stroke got my arm between another guys scissor kick (not as sexy as it sounds...) and for a minute I thought he had broken my arm. Bike was much harder than I had anticipated, and paid for the effort on the run. Just a poorly executed race on my part.

Sunday went better despite being sore. Had fun both days! Then post race had a hamburger salad... made me sick as a dog for a 12 hour ride back to TN. Congrats everyone!

True - I did the sprint, so even harder. Assuming distances were on, I PR'd every leg (compared with other tris, not single sport) and had transitions faster than guys ahead of me. Very balanced splits - 30th fastest swim, 31st bike, 34th run. Not that I looked obsessively or anything...

Congrats Mumps and to everyone who achieved their time/place goals. I can relate. 30th in AG, 34 seconds from 25th. I've been thinking a lot in the past 36 hours, especially on the solo 7 hour drive back to Ohio, about what I could have done differently on Sunday and during training. Not expecting many roll downs. We just need to use this as fuel for the fire!

On the positive side, I'm already thinking about how it could be a fun trip to Chicago next Sept to cheer on my 5 teammates who made Team USA and enjoy some long runs and great food without the pre-race stress.

I think what he doubts is that many people will decline their slot.

Logistically, very little separates 2015 Worlds from 2014 Nats (same time of year, "exact" same location ). Can't imagine their will be many (any?) people who want to go but can't based on those factors

Not 100% but it sounded like they will be rolling to 30th, not dependent on people declining, i.e. 1st-25th could confirm and 26th-30th would still get a slot. I could be wrong.

I guess. I'm trying to remember exactly how they worded it, but that was the impression I got. They also mentioned something about being within 3% of the 25th place time and that beating that may qualify you as well. It didn't really affect me so I wasn't paying super close attention unfortunately. Hopefully someone else can chime in.

I'm not super clear on it either but my take on that 3% thing was that they would only be willing to roll down that far (within 3% of 25th place) if the 25 slots weren't filled by individuals in the top 30. I imagine 3% goes pretty far down in most age groups - 40th maybe

This was what I was told by the USAT staffer. If there were any roll downs that go beyond 30th, they'll continue to roll down as long as the time is within 3% of 25th.

I don't think very many in the top 25 will decline their spots especially when they didn't even have to pay a deposit on race day.

This is why like 60% dropped out at the end when they had to pay the full amount.

The way the announcement sounded to me was that they were taking top 30 and then implementing a 3% rule. I think they are increasing the number to 30 to ensure a full squad next year considering some may drop out for whatever reason. So my understanding is top 30 are in.

If that is the case I might have an outside shot as I was 40th. Wow that was a horrible race. Much better Sunday after some beer and wine. I know I am in for the Sprint at least.

My interpretation was top 25 in, will roll to 30 and then to 3% of 25th person's time until they fill 25 spots. The announcement didn't seem to indicate they are taking more than 25 per AG. IMO, you should have to fully pay for the race when you accept a spot so only those seriously planning in attending take one like what the WTC does.

But didn't the USAT announcer say they had extra slots because we are the home country, so they could take 30?

The extra spots were the 7 that increased the total in each AG to 25.

Thats definitely the reason we get 25 and not 18, according to the USAT website. The lady next to me in the registration line finished maybe 22ish in her division but the age up rule put her 28th or 29th. She was told that she did not have a slot and would be contacted if roll downs were available, so I'm pretty sure its still 25 in and roll to 30 (+ 3%)

I'm of the understanding that there originally was 18 slots per age group, and because the US is the host nation, an extra 7 were given with a total of 25 slots per age group. The original allocation was to be top 25 were eligible for the 18 slots, but they opened the eligibility to top 25 plus any within 10% of time. I don't know about cross over from un-utilized age groups (like Male 80-84).

Oh. I thought there were 25 slots to start. So, I guess I don't know then.

I thought the "extra" meant 25, not 18 like in years past. I could be wrong, but that is what I thought he said. His main point is they want to maximize their spots so I hope they do something to ensure those who claim them actually use them.

So frustrating for me. First time I have been sick in years and it happens the week of AG Nats. Suffered through the sprint and was faster than the previous year but nowhere near 100%. Finished 31st in AG which was 30 seconds from 25th. Passed in the last 50 yards and lost 30th by 1-2 seconds. Hoping for a Chicago slot to "redeem" myself. Gave it what I had that day but nowhere near where I have been this season. Decided not to go to Edmonton and focus on Milwaukee.....crappy time to be sick. I will be obssessing over this until they let me know if I have a slot. Please let me go to Chicago!!!

Here is what I would think has to happen.
1. USAT contacts all auto qualifiers and requires deposit by certain date.
2. Those slots that go unclaimed/unpaid for are then rolled down per USAT rolldown process

Congrats to all those that grabbed, or will grab, World slots. I am in awe of how fast some of you are. I had a good day, nowhere near you guys... but I PR'd the course and distance by over 5 minutes. I actually PR'd every discipline. So I was happy with my performance. I'm slowly improving... actually don't think I'm doing that bad for only being in my second full season and being self-coached.

I like Milwaukee, but it appears I am in the minority when it comes to opinion on the roads we raced on. I found them to be terrible. Yes, I live and train in the south (ATL). So my view may be a little askew. But apparently a bad road in Atlanta is a good road in Milwaukee. For this reason, I will not return to Milwaukee next year unless somehow the entire course is paved... now that would be a scary fast course... especially for you uber-bikers.

I know some of you have the opposite opinion and I can understand that if you train on roads like that it's no biggie... but for me... yeah, so much. To each, their own.

On a slight side note... earlier in the thread some were talking about what time it would take to qualify, it being one of the most competitive fields ever, etc... well that even trickled down to us slower guys:

Last year I was 148/211. This year being over 5 minutes faster I was 147/219. M40-44 BTW. Crazy.

Again... congrats to you fast guys & gals!

Yeah, I dropped about 2 1/2 minutes off last year's time and dropped 5 spots in M40-44. Was 26th last year and 31st this year. Went a 2:07 this year which would have garnered a spot on the US team last year at ~16th or 17th. I am within the 3% of 25th so hoping for the best. As h2o said, I hope they find a way to guarantee full participation rather than have a bunch of people pay the $50 reservation then not follow through on the full payment later.

This happened to a lot of people....a woman who trains with us went 3 minutes faster than last year and dropped 20 spots in her AG.

With the World's being in Chicago, a lot of faster people showed up this year to try and nab a slot. Much cheaper going to Chicago for US folks than it is to go to Europe, etc.

Anyone who lives in a place that gets snow will likely say Milwaukee roads are decent. When you combine an urban setting with the snow, that really is the best you can hope for. Having lived in NYC and Chicago for many years, the roads at AG Nats were great. Except for the intersection at the Joan bridge, there weren't any pot holes to worry about. I loved the bike course and will be back next year for a third shot and hopefully be able to continue my trend of faster every year.

So they are going to send emails to a lot of competitors soon to inform them to wait for months to see if by some slim chance they get a spot on Team USA via a rolldown? Or maybe I'm missing something and the entire Team USA selection process will be completed within a month or two?

Maybe. Or, they might get 25 to pay the $50 fee quickly and end it there . . . only to have many of them not follow through with the full signup and not filling the 25 allotted spots. Only 14 of 18 in M40-44 are competing in Edmonton this year. I hope USAT fixes this, even if it means I will be on pins and needles for a month or more.

Up until folks had to pay the full amount, basically all AG's had 20 per. Mine went from 20 to like 8 after. USAT has to get a better process which is make folks having to pay the full amount when they say they want to be on
TeamUSA. This 50 buck stuff is a joke. Then offer race insurance so if I person gets hurts, great, they can get their money back. But otherwise, this is terrible it takes spots away from other athletes.

Mark, I hope you make it in. Good to meet you for a brief time.....

I thought the race organization, course and venue was one of the best in my 29 years of triathlon...if not the best.

I was mildly disappointed with my results after diligently training with speed work for months knowing I would still likely be more than wave fodder for M55-59 in the Sprint. 52nd of 72 in the AG confirms my place in the food chain....not that that was a surprise....I still would have thought I would have gone faster in all three sports. BUT I have never done nationals and I am glad I got the experience....

Question: Was this the most competitive USA Oly/sprint fields in the history of sport??

Thanks Steve. Good to meet you too! Like you, I was a newbie at short course nationals, since my last one was in Chicago in the mid '90s. Folks who are regulars at the event would be able to confirm whether it was the most competitive in history, but I would think it probably was because of the size of the field and the opportunity to qualify to race at the first short course worlds in the continental U.S. in two decades.

Our peers who race nationals regularly schooled me a bit on peaking for the event and pushing all the way to the finish line. I wish I had a chance to redeem myself down the road, but I don't anticipate trying to qualify for a draft-legal sprint worlds and I don't know if a non-draft-legal sprint nationals will ever be as competitive again if it doesn't qualify folks for Team USA.

$50 is the big key there. In the land of $10,000 bikes who wouldn't pay $50 to preserve their option to race for multiple months. I would say I have a 50/50 chance of racing Chicago right now depending on what university I end up at and what time of year it starts, but I will certainly be paying $50 for the "extension" to decide. Who knows I may start at the end of September and for sure want to race Chicago or I may start early September and be wrapped up in xc. $50 could well buy me to the time to know which it is.

I want to agree with you in regards to the quality of the race. Superb all the way around. Great venue, administration, etc. I also felt it was astonishingly competitive. I did not have the race I was hoping for in the 55's, going 4 minutes slower than 2013 when I actually felt I was in better shape this year. That feeling you get within a mile or so on the bike where there is no snap and too much soreness in the legs at speed? Bingo. And that was not going to work in a field this fast.

While my performance was a little disappointing, the event itself was great to be a part of. I have a couple of Kona's and a few Boston Marathon's in my past, and there is nothing like being a part of a big competitive, top drawer event...even if you mess up the training and get crushed! :) Congrats to everyone on their finish and to USA Triathlon and Bob and Wendy Hanisch's group for a great event!

Was wondering the same thing about 2016 sprint nationals. Will USAT play along with ITU and make our national qualifier draft legal? It will be interesting to see how USAT responds. Will there be regional and local draft legal races? What will the rules be? And most importantly, will my wife give me permission to get a new bike for draft legal races? Seems to me like this is a pretty steep curve to climb up in one year.

The question is not 2016 but 2015 sprint nationals which would qualify for 2016 worlds.

If the NFL follows past precedent and doesn't announce the 2015-2016 schedule until ~April, 2015, will we even know the date for ITU worlds until then?

A previous poster astutely pointed out there is no way Worlds will land on a weekend with a home Bears game.

I believe weeks 1-8 are set well ahead of time, they don't announce full schedule until after the season because weeks 7-17 are not decided until after the season so the NFL can balance schedule based on the previous season's record.

For DU Nats (Standard and Sprint), they only gave us 2 weeks to claim our slots (pay the $50 deposit). They did this on-site at the awards and through a follow-up e-mail. The lines were huge and that was a small field compared to Tri Nats.

I was all set to pay for my slot at the awards in MKE but USAT said that they were only doing it via e-mail - they simply asked me to confirm my e-mail address.

I thought the process of allowing 11-25 to verify their e-mails prior to the awards and 1-10 during/after the awards helped expedite the process from years past but they should have gone ahead and let us pay.

As for the road surface in MKE...I thought the race course surface was butter compared to the rest of the roads in town. Just be thankful we raced on the roads that we did!

In 2013 I was going down the bridge into T2. I was looking down at my feet, which I was taking out of their shoes. I hit a pot hole and my breaks (at the same time) and went over my handle bars at 25+ mph.
I broke my collar bone.
It is not the courses fault, that I am an idiot!!

This year i was very conservative on that part of the course.
The roads were not idiot proof. But would you want a course like that anyway?

All in all it is an awesome event. Very well run. Very competitive in a good way. Coming from Arizona in summer I felt I had arrived in paradise. It was not an inconvenient or expensive trip. They even had a fun awards ceremony.
(I usually dislike those).

I hated the road as well, but maybe that's because I too flatted on the bridge. Going up. I think it was a pinch flat because it happened right when I went over one of the metal expansion joints. Although when I got home and changed it the old tube didn't have the normal snake bite mark of a pinch flat, but instead just a decent sized hole. Either way...bummer. Was having a nice race up until that point. Oh well. Onward and upward I guess.

Don't really remember -- I rode half the bridge on the flat. I didn't really inspect the tube for the snake bite. For the most part USAT did a good job covering the expansion joints.

Interesting, I didn't notice that! I hope it's around there, I'm worried it'll end up the same weekend as IM MOO.

I was there and what an experience! My largest race to date and a bit humbling although I don't take this sport or myself that "seriously"... I do this because I enjoy it and many other positives this hobby gives me. Inspiring others is at the top and through my social media blurbs during my attendance I inspired one of my reader to "get more healthy"... that's a win for me.

I digress, I didn't have the race I wanted to and ideally I'd have known the bike course better. I'm usually an off the front swimmer, but I panic'd a bit in the water mid cove with a bit of chop, mouth full of water and honestly I haven't swam in my wet suit since a January race... where I also had a little mini panic attack. I'd love to come back and do this one again and to be competitive I have to find some of my low 5 minute mile running speed. What an amazing experience though, I hope they reuse the site.

I'm also waiting for the roll down e-mail... I finished 25th in my AG and with the aging stuff a few other spots down. We will see.

Had a great time.....although my race sucked ass.....

Shooting for 2:03-2:05 and went 2:16....LOL....something was very off and I packed it in early on the run. Taking some time off to figure it out.

The venue at MKE is so good. So many hotels within walking distance so you don't have a super early morning trying to find parking. The swim was absolutely spot on in distance which is always incredible. Bike a little short to help the ego and make cracking an hour a little easier ;) and a super flat run with a couple great out and backs to watch the competition coming. It really hits all major points for a wonderful race.
