Big Kahuna Year FOUR
Well we are winding down to the very end of the year.

I plan to humbly submit for your enjoyment the fourth "Big Kahuna" Full Year ST points challenge tomorrow ...

We had 84 entrepid ST souls jump in during year 1--2011. 8 hit the gold standard of 18,000 points (1,500/mth) for a golden average of 9.4%.

Last year, year 2, we had only 5 of 143 participants clear the challenging Golden Bar. This equates to just 3.4%.

This year, year 3 it looks like we'll have 7-9 out of 144 participants get to the Golden Level.

Last year, the five golden level folks averaged: 718k swim/7188 bike/1593 run/876 hours.

I'll post final stats here shortly but I hope you join in the fun--obviously, intensity et al are very important but for all you folks who want to be held accountable for showing up everyday and putting in the time--all year---this is your challenge!

all are welcome! we have silver (15,000 points) and bronze (12,000 points) achievement levels as well--all are worthy of a concerted effort to achieve. Please come and join our community---The Big Kahuna 4 (2014) challenge will be up tomorrow!

Check back here after Jan 1 for stats related to the first three years of our challenge!

I'm in. 2013 was a highly successful year for me - only one injury and came within 25 seconds of my half marathon PR and 30 seconds of my 1650 PR (that's a swim race for you non fishes).

For those of you who haven't done this challenge, chasing the person in front of you on the spreadsheet is highly motivating. It's like 100/100 but it lasts ALL YEAR!

I'm in again. 2013 ended up being a year of 'meh' so I barely logged anything before giving up so with an IM booked along with some middle distance and HM's for 2014 I feel I could get that Bronze I so want badly!

I think I'd be close if not over the gold level if I could just get around to entering my workouts. I kinda gave up logging them here many months ago. I'm more of a paper log guy so I've got them all recorded just not here. Oh well.

I'm 37 points short of 18000 for 2013 as of today. That equates to an Ironman swim leg and I'm over the hump. Should be possible today! In for 2014

From the lazy category...... Those of you who have the ear of the log keepers.

Is there an easy way to pin this on going challenge to the first page of challenges. By sept or so one needs to go about three pages deep past expired and current challenges to find it (unless I am missing something which is entirely possible)

I think our best chance is to "book mark" year 4 Big Kahuna link. The reason I say that, is because the guy who designed the ST training log and challenge utility and implemented it, is not available any longer to do upgrades. My understanding is that slowman has an eventual upgrade planned to the entire log at some point.

I've joined - am very new to triathlon and only started training in mid-October.

Looking forward to seeing how I go - my coach puts my sessions in Training Peaks every Sunday so quite structured. About to go for a run - well when I say run, I actually mean hill work as am still recovering from a calf injury - and a pool swim

I ride:

In for 2014.

I was feeling mighty good in August when I started climbing from 65 to 48 place until I learned those previously in front of me we no longer logging their workouts. Still, glad to have gotten through '13 injury free if simply MOP among the Kahunistas

The safest and most time effective way to log a lot of points is to swim lots. It is pretty easy to bang out around 30 points per hour (3000m swim). To do that running, you have to run 7.5 miles, but most can't do that "as often" as swimming. On the other hand, you can run anywhere, any time, so running is more easily "accessible" if you have the durability to do a lot of running often. Cycling is the least efficient in terms of time, but you can log endless volume (if you have the time).

Thanks Dev! Took almost 45 min off my IM PR (11:32) this year at IMCDA with consistency (BarryP was the backbone of my training). This year I'm going to up the volume and stay consistent to see if a sub 11 is in the cards at Whistler.

I just wanted to post a little advice about this challenge. It is great during the base/build phase when you need the motivation to log a lot of miles, but later in the season when you need to taper for race or recover it can cause you stray from your training plan. You know you need to taper but you look at the standings and see people passing you and you think maybe I can squeeze in an extra workout. My advice is to not to look at the challenge when your tapering, recovering or sick. Just remember it is really about racing well, not just logging miles. I say this because I did have some great races and PRs this season but I'm still annoyed that I missed Gold by less than 500 points.

I'm in for 2014. I have done it the last 2 years, and only hit the bronze level. Mostly cause I run more than anything. This year, I have a tri coach, I'm biking and swimming in addition to running and I'm going for gold!!

I wish every one a wonderful and injury free 2014.

I'm in. I only logged a little bit in 2013.

Looking at my year, I might be able to hit gold if everything goes well. Running almost every day, more swim volume, and the addition of a commuting bike will pave the way.

Of course, I'm a little under the weather this morning for the first time in a long time. Grr.

Great challenge! Long long ago when I began swimming, I got pretty obsessed with it, and built somewhat of a reputation for being insanely consistent. I went for about a three year stretch being able to count on one hand the number of scheduled workouts I missed. I've been longing for that feeling again - that feeling of being fully absorbed, sinking completely into a thing. Gonna do my best to re-ignite that with this challenge.

Actually, I think the question is one of how to input distance of indoor trainer rides, and that is something I am quite interested in myself as well, since speed on an indoor trainer is pretty far from real world speed, and thus distance is ridiculously off. My approach is to take my ride time and use an approximate average speed for an equivalent outdoor ride to come up with a distance to input. Luckily, since I have a computrainer, I can take the NP for the ride from trainerroad and correlate it to an approximation of what mph that would have produced so the guesswork is somewhat minimized, but it isn't a simple proposition! Of course, if I use the RM1 software, I just tweak the drag factor until the mph is in a reasonable range but even there, we are talking a ton of fudge factor.

I do the same thing for trainer rides. I don't think any given ride is that far off, but over a year I'm hoping that the errors average out instead of add up. Not sure of any other way to put it in the log and count it since it's based on miles and not time.

Ya, I see you hit about 11,100 for 2013 so 12,000 should be easy if you set your mind to it:)

I make the conversion pretty straight forward. If I ride the rollers (which I always ride pretty hard), I give myself credit for 30 kph, even though my "speed" on those rides tends to be around 38 kph. If I ride my Computrainer moderately hard like 220W (which is half IM race pace), I generally give myself credit for 34-36 kph with the warmup and cooldown. If I ride at 240-250W, I generally give myself credit for 38-40 kph depending on how long my warmup/cooldown was. It's all an estimation but over a year it kind of evens off. In the end, it is all honor system. Give yourself credit for the work you do. If we cheat ourselves in an ST challenge, there are bigger problems that we need to be worried about. In the end, all of this is to get us fitter.

I have to say I really didn't think this challenge out before I joined. Some of you people are monsters. I really doubt that I can attain the 18k points but I think with some effort I will be able to achieve one of the lower levels. My biggest problem is that I am so damn slow in the water, hopefully undertaking this challenge will help with that. Good luck to all and Happy New Year.

Go to your profile in the training section - scroll down a bit and you'll see settings. Just choose US customary system and it should work fine.

Also - can anyone help me with the plodding of Garmin files from my 910? I have the Garmin Communicator installed in my MacBook and the first few times it all worked fine. Now tough, when I try to upload new workouts it all goes ok until I get to the "uploading to server" screen. It basically freezes here for ages, with no uploads going through.

I've checked on the Garmin Communicator site and I have the latest version.

You can join now and just back fill your workouts...or just add your yearly volumes to date into one swim one bike and one run workout and you'll be up to date.

Rcmioga....not sure I will get to gold this year. My business travel schedule Sep-Nov is likely going to be insane from what I can tell right now and the next few months will be a lot of racing and tapering!

Do you have to log on ST for the Big Kahuna?

So far this year I have 317,266yds swim, 3672 miles bike and 1308 mile run. That's not too bad for a non-ironman year. Oh I think I calculated it as 12076 points

Possibly but I kind of doubt it. Think we're all too used to miles, yards, etc, but i must admit that the metric is much simpler once you get used to it. In much of my engineering work we use milligrams per liter (parts per million), micrograms per liter (parts per billion), etc, but then other things are still lbs/gallon, etc.

Besides, the Republicans are going to push back and not let Obama get away with this unilateral declaration, but any further discuss will have to be in the LR:)

Dev: i predict you'll find a way to hit 18,000 on or about Dec 28th!

Well it is Dec 28th, and i need 415 points to hit 18000. 400 points is basically a 16-17 hour training week. So in the next 3 days I basically need 10,000 m of swimming that gives me 110 points, plus 200 miles biking, and then I need 105 points from running, so that's basically a marathon. In other words, I have to do my biggest training camp of the year which I did at Epicman Tremblant where I did 10,000m swimming, 280K biking and 46K or running in a weekend. The problem is it is dropping to minus 10 to minus 18 C for the next few days and there is no way I can do that much biking on the trainer....so 3 days short of the deadline, I think I will graciously throw in the towel on gold I did travel 130,000 miles this year, so that is basically 1 hour per day, every day of the year in an airplane, which is my excuse!

I'm tracking for a solid silver. For the first part of the year the base work had me in line for Gold but with racing, tapering and recovering I fell back. No complaints though and credit to those who get there, a lot of credit...... it is a tough challenge and requires a lot of dedication to get there...I will average out at around 2.25 hours per day and still come in at circa 16300 points.

Great job to everyone who logged a workout..... wherever you ended up it is better than sitting on the sofa eating chips!

I missed out on gold but was close; need about 230 more points. Either a teeny bit more swimming needed, or more bike time... happy with the effort though. I did make gold last year.

Similar deal...in reality, 1 more minute on each workout of the year, gets me the final few 100 points to go over 18000. When it comes to these things, it is not a single week or set of workouts. It is the summation of every tiny extra minute on the treadmill, or extra 100m in the pool, or adding an two 2 min extra hill climbs in during the bike commute home that add up to a lot. Look at it this way.....if you train 1 minute more per day, that is 365 minutes in a year, which is an extra 6 hours of training for the year...3 more minutes per day, is 18 hours of training....in other words, you can try to spread that 18 hours of training by adding 9 hours of training to two 15 hour weeks (making them 24 hour training weeks), or you can just commit to making every workout a touch longer....3-5 minutes per workout adds up over a year...last year I was just over 18000 points this year just a bit under with 760 hours. No magic though.....770-780 hours of so pushes me over the top.

Yeah my swim averaged 1702 yards a day, which is literally a lap a day short of a mile per day average. It really is the very little extra minutes that push you over the top

Dev, makes an interesting point. Not so much for the challenge which is just for fun, but in terms of race performance I wonder how much gain would be made by pushing each workout say 3-5% longer. Physiologically, I am ready to stop at the end of a workout irrespective of length.... would I build mental and physical strength if I always pushed that bit further / harder?

I don't think I would want to push EACH workout 3-5% longer. For instance, I have maxed out my run mileage and if I add more I will probably get hurt. For me it is a matter of cycling more. I could go longer in swimming, but that is not going to gain me as much as adding bike mileage is.

So I think that yeah, as an average it means each workout needs to be a little bit longer, but in practice it is more fine tuned

Generally, the workout time I have is fixed and I don't come close to being physiologically spent, mainly because I can't do as much intensity as when I was 25, 35 or even 45. So what that means is I need more time, but that is fixed, too. So I just get more efficient in my changing and take shorter showers....frees up 5-10 min...at least this applies to work days. Weekends and holidays you are right, I can train till I drop, so more volume is not an option. So the quick answer is it/depends.
