Womens' Camp 2014
Yes it's early to think about, but we have multiple schedules to coordinate. Right now we are looking at April 2-6. That is open on Monty's calendar. We could have 80F, we could have a dusting of snow. Or both.

And for anyone wanting to visit NashVegas in the summer, I have a very large party house. I know Kristi will be visiting me to ride long since she and her demented husband talked me into signing up for IMChatt. And I'm sure I can drag AWARE out too.

April 2-6 works for me. I'll be looking for lots of hills and miles with IMC on July 27.

And keep us posted on the NashVegas weekend. IMC is a bit earlier than IMChatt but if timing works out, I could be. SWA has great flight prices from MDW to BNA.

Since my work is transferring me to laguna Niguel, CA, it should be easy for me to make almost any weekend.

If you organize NashVegas, I will be there too!

As for NashVegas, here's hoping I can get a work trip kinda out that way soon... :-)

OHOHOHOH!!! SOOOOOO Exciting. I needed this type of exciting good stuff on a REALLY droopy Monday morning. I may not make the April trip but I will DEFINITELY be down for anything here in Nashville. I can probably even offer up some swimming with the Master's group I coach & organize something out at the lake if the timing is right.

I may not have a large party house, but I will most likely have a townhome with an extra bed or two & plenty of nourishing/hydrating opportunities. I can also make a helluva cocktail when requested.

And I'll need continual dragging out on my bike as well, since I got hooked into IMChatt as well.

On my calendar. I will need the womens to climb some dam hills and to whine to Dan about my short-girl problems with the fit bike and the saddle tour. This year I promise to bring some sort of consumables, although I hate to rival Monty's classic chocolate cake.

This is officially going on the calendar - April 2-6, 2014.

Cost will be $70/night, all inclusive. Gourmet cooking, all the bike riding and running you want, even stories from the old days (and videos too). And of course, coffee, wine, beer and Monty's wicked margaritas on Saturday night.

All right womens, it is on!! Perhaps a couple of you with the silver tongues could post up a link to your blogs that detailed some of the past camps, and of course pics or it did not happen. That way any new womens seeing this for the first time could see what they might expect at this hideaway in the mountains, with two old crusty men sleeping just a room away. And keep in mind for those of you that are prepping for a big A race to happen within a month or two, you can come out early like cathy and get in a couple extra days of red blood cell multiplying training.

And don't forget that we do have some loaner bikes for those flying in, but limited in sizes and all road bikes. So if you want to save a few bucks give cathy a holler and let her know about what sizes you can ride, they are brand new carbon bikes with that new bike smell.

Hi there
Used to post occasionally, a few years ago... I just checked in again, randomly, and saw the info about this great-sounding camp! Seriously thinking about it. I'm training for my first Ironman (Lake Placid) so it could be helpful. Of course fun too. :-)
A few questions: is the closest airport LAX? I'd rather not rent a car by myself - any chance of sharing a ride or rental from airport or city of LA? (May come early or stay after in LA to visit friends.)
Is there any swimming?
Are there all people of all paces there? :-) I would want to do some good longish rides and would like company for them. I'm not super speedy.
Lastly, if I do come, I would loooove one of the loaner bikes. I'm 5'7" and think I could do a 51 or maybe 52 size. (My bike is a Giant TCR and it's a small so I'm not 100% sure of size by numbers.)
Thanks and hope that's not too many questions!

Hey Mindy-

Usually as we get closer to camp, folks will start coordinating ride shares and whatnot. As of now, my plans are to be in LA for a couple of days prior to the camp and then head out there on Wednesday, leaving Sunday sometime depending on my return flight time. If those times work out for you, I would be happy to have you carpool with me and my friend, Michele. The two of us are training for IMC so there will be plenty of long rides for us. And yes, there are usually people of all speeds and levels of training. It all just seems to work out. Those that ride long work among themselves to periodically meet up along the way and no one has been left behind (to my knowledge). There is also a beautiful pool in Palmdale and we usually head there a couple of times during camp (depending on weather).

In terms of airports - LAX is not the closest airport. Burbank is the closest, I think. CLM will have to confirm. Ontario is also an option. I have always flown into LAX as that is where I can get the best prices on flights and rental cars.

Hope to see you in CA!

Thanks. Looks awesome and i hope to make it! I'd probably have a similar timeframe as you (re arrival/departure) so would love to share rides. Also, ha, just realized, don't know how "longish" my rides would be - as it will be so early in spring, but we'll see! :-)

Cathy, I'm mentioned this to my wife before a few times. She's currently injured and signed up for Tremblant so 2014 camp is not likely, but I hope she does it one of these years.

She's maybe only posted three times on ST in the last 10 yrs. I can see her showing up for the camp and introducing herself to you gals as "cerveloguy's wife". LOL!!

Newbie here-
So I take it this is a social get together with a little tri training on the side? ;)
And the location is somewhere near Burbank, CA.
Is there a limit to the number of people who can go (due to lodging limitations)?
I mean, when you use the word "camp" do you mean "in tents" or like the general use "training camp" kind of "camp"?
Thanks for clarifying.

Social + training. You can train as much or as little as you want. There will probably be someone in the same boat.

Location is near Valyermo, CA. About an hour from Burbank (depending on traffic.)

Yes, there is a limit, but that hasn't been an issue yet.

No tents. There is a B&B and once or twice we've put overflow into the "stabbin' cabin" and the camper, but no tents.

Hi, I am sort of one of those who rarely posts but am coming to camp!
Just bought plane tickets. It sounds too good to not go. :-)
So, I'd love to "reserve" one of the loaner bikes - I'm 5'7" and right now ride a Giant "small" size or if they go by numbers maybe a 51" ?
Is there anything else I need to do?
Sooooo looking forward to it!

Kind of hard to answer. It depends who comes and what they are training for. And, nearly every ride is either up or down. Very little flat (unless you go down to the desert floor, but we haven't done that for awhile).

But people do tend to sort themselves out and ride together.

I don't ride at all and I still really enjoy myself. Usually a group goes out in the morning then we do something to entertain ourselves in the afternoon.

Sally and I did this crazy run that we managed to get a bit turned around on. Thankfully she had a GPS map app on her phone. A lot of fun.

We do an outdoor swim that is amazing for those of us in the northern climates.

Still tentative. I have several trips already on the books for 2014, the biggest being a trip to Germany & Italy to tour a whack of auto factories (Porsche, Audi, Lamborghini, possibly Ferrari - yeah seriously - I have the best job!). It's either in May or Sept - if it's in May I'm out; if it's in Sept I'll be in. :-)

Must work on the somersault before you can master the flip. I teach the progression that makes it easy. Though when I was learning many, many moons ago, I gave myself a black eye from turning too close to an outside corner in my pool at home.

I got the summersault but twist partway through and end up sideways. If I just do a straight summersault without adding the flip turn I come up fine.

many coaches, including my masters coach who wrote an article on this for the USMS magazine, advocate that you stay on your back as you push off (toes to the sky on the wall), and only twist after you push. But of course I will defer entirely to Monty for the lessons. :)

My college coach made me switch to doing it that way, too. It's easier and faster to turn using your momentum after pushing off the wall.

We reimburse Monty for the use of his swim punch card (a few $$), we contribute something new or lightly used to the Womens gift exchange, and sometimes we go into town for local cuisine (last year it was date shakes and tacos). You can easily get by with about $20 cash (plus tipping the host ;) ).

Hi all -

I got some bad news on my knee that pretty much means I won't be doing much, if any, running during camp. I have no cartilage left under my kneecap and until I can get my leg/hip strength up I really won't be running.

I haven't been on a bike in 6 years and unless I can swim every day I won't be doing training. I don't think anyone will be up for a long walk in the woods.

If there is a waiting list I'll step aside so someone who will actually train can come.

I would be sad not to see you, Jen -- and you know that I always end up walking most of the Punchbowl run, so I would be more than happy to go on a long walk with you at least one day, and to swim many days. I'd also be glad to lend you my road bike, if you want to do a little cycling on 650 wheels.

Jen, I don't know you (don't know anyone!) and am sorry to hear about your knee. I'd be happy to go for a walk. I tore a ligament in my foot this past fall and am just starting a little bit of running now. So walking long sounds good. :-)
Also when I decided to come I was hoping to do some longer bikes - but I don't know how long they'll be considering I haven't ridden outside since December!! Too cold/snowy here in northeast. Been doing lots of indoor riding but...
Well, we shall see, I'm sure it will all be great and I am sooooo looking forward to this!

We only have a couple small bikes, in the 51/52range, but as someone else pointed out, many of the local womens bring up extra small bikes, so you should be good to go leaving your steed at home. Maybe touch base and reserve one of those 48;s..

Hi!
I would love to use one of the loaner 51 or 52 bikes if at all possible/available.... I'm 5'7" and while it's totally generous of the local womens to bring smaller bikes (48) I think that is too small for me. Unless anyone has an extra 51-52 bike they could lend me?
Thanks!!

Hey Mindy, let Cathy know, i think she is making a list of what everyone wants to ride. And you should be fine, you probably could fit on anything up to 54 i would guess, just need a shorter stem, which we have plenty of here. Assuming of course you have long legs like most the womens, usually gals your height have the same leg length as me at 5'10"!!

Hi Cathy
As Monty just suggested, I'm writing to request a "loaner" bike. I might have actually done that already but can't remember! :-)
51-52 perfect, or even up to a 54 probably fine as we can put a shorter stem on the 53/54 if needed.
Thanks!!! I am sooo looking forward to this!

In addition to all this swim/bike/run stuff, I'm an actress/playwright. I'm presently working on a one-person play about Ironman training. (I'm performing some of it at a theatre here in NYC next week!).
IF there were interest, I'd be happy to do a reading of some of it one night - in fact, would love to. (Very informally. I promise it is entertaining! And won't be too long - 30 minutes max!
I'd actually love feedback on it! So far only my theatre pals have heard it.

Michele and I will be flying in to LAX on Tuesday night and hanging in LA on Wednesday morning (staying in Santa Monica). Plan on picking up seh somewhere in LA and heading to camp for Wednesday evening. We leave camp on Sunday mid-morning.

Michele and I will be mailing our bikes out to camp so we are good on that front.

In terms of dietary stuff, I am sure we cause issues. I am gluten free (per dr orders) and Michele is allergic to nuts, seafood, fish, and raw eggs. We both function well in most circumstances so I am sure we can make do with the normal stuff Monty usually keeps in the house. It may just mean we eat left overs or sandwiches for dinner on certain nights if Monty keeps his usual menu for the week.

I'm sorry everyone but I'm out. Multiple reasons: work re-org and projects, plus Olive isn't doing well.

I put the decision off as long as I could but we have an exec review next week and I don't know what the result will be. I need to be here for any fallout.

Plus, if anything happens to Olive while I'm away I'll never forgive myself. The vet seems to think her cancer has come back. I'll know more next week. She's too important to me to risk being away. If you've ever had pets you'll understand.

My second vacation in less than 6 months that I've had to bail out on :-(

I travel quite a bit with Michele so I am know her allergies but thought I would confirm so I said allergies are: "nuts, seafood, shellfish". She replied back with "and raw egg" and the conversation went something like this:

M- don't forget raw eggs
D- I am pretty sure we will not be having raw eggs
M- but raw egg is in all kinds of food
D- like what?
M- baked Alaska
D- Where do you think we are going? the 1950s?
D- I think I'll tell Monty you only eat Rocky style smoothies. Nothing but raw eggs for you.

I'm down to only one night and Sunday this year. As the new California club opening coincides (ARRRRGH) with Womens' Camp, I have to work all days until Saturday at 4. Once I am free of the job-monster in Orange County, I will pedal my Fred Flintstone-mobile as fast as I can to Xantusia.

At this point, I'll sleep in the barn if I must, just to get away from work for one day. Monty, hold that margarita until I get there!

Drink a couple of margaritas for me. And Sally, there should be room so you don't have to sleep in the barn!

For the new Womens - Monty will keep you fed and entertained, plus there are enough regulars to show you the ropes. Take lots of photos!

My one consolation is that I may get my new bike next week! Well, two - I also get to see Kristi in April!

Here is the list. In my exhausted state, I hope I didn't miss anyone. Have fun!!

Kristi McE (Kristi) Wed.
