Good week last week, had a couple of first time experiences. Got pretty much all scheduled tri training in, except for Saturday.
On Saturday, my tri training group went stand up paddle boarding together at the place we normally do our open water swim training. This was a first for me and most of the gals I was with, but a few had been before. It was fun, but the lifejacket they made us wear was very warm, and the temps were in the 80s. Went out to lunch after, then headed up to LA Live (never been there before, so another first) to pickup my packet for my first LA Triathlon. Felt very nervous about dropping off run gear bag at packet pickup, but everything was okay on that front.
Sunday- LA Triathlon. I got up very early, and headed down to downtown LA, went to try to park, but the lots we were told to park in were either blocked off or closed, so I spent half an hour driving around looking for a place to park. Found an open lot, but with no attendant, that few other people had parked in, we just waited for some more people to park in there to make sure nothing bad would happen (nothing did, ended up paying when I got back). Headed to get on the shuttle bus with my bike to get to the race start in Venice. This was a real party bus, it even had a pole in the middle, the seating was set up so that we were able to just roll the bikes in and sit & hold them w/both wheels on the ground.
The race itself was great, they did a "swim-stream" start similar to WTCs, 25 swimmers went at a time, time started after crossing mat. I ended up in the 3rd or so group of the sprint, 1st group was 15min or faster time, next groups were 16-19 min time (my group) and so on until all sprinters were in the water. Water was a bit choppy, some were scared off by the occasional 4ft wave. Finished swim and headed out on the bike, lots of potholes and a$$holes on the bike (got passed twice in a row in the right, and almost took both of these guy out as I moved right so others could pass on the left, and there was plenty of room for them to pass on the left.) Run had a nice "little" hill in the middle, which I walked, but still managed to get a 5K PR.

This week-
Swim- Mon & Thursday
Ride- Wed & Sun
Run- Tues, Saturday

SQUEEEEEEEEEEE so glad to be back!

Total Time: 5:28
1 run (30 min), 1 trainer ride (30min), 1 long ride (2:23), 1 "errands on my bicycle" set (1hr), and 1 easy swim (20min).

I am still in a CRAP TON of pain from the 50k charity ride, but it was a fantastic experience. Hands, shoulders, neck, and everything below the waist... yeah. I'm destroyed. But it was 10 miles over my previous distance PR, so YAHOO! Awaiting my coach's feedback on the week in whole, but his opinion of the long ride was "next up, 50 miles!" - that hurts to think about right now.

My nutrition sucked, but it was my birthday weekend, so EAT ALL THE DESSERTS and DRINK ALL THE BOOZE! Pssht. Last of my 20's ^_^;

This week's goals: ease back in, foam roller EVERYTHING nightly, stretch more, spend more time in the pool while sore (running sounds like death right now).

LOVING this cooler weather, so psyched to do more outside rides/runs without freaking about heat - it's been super toasty in San Jose.

This was my first post-wedding, post sinus-infection week. I went into it full of energy and hope and it went something like this:

Mon: bike
Tues: swim
Wed: bike & swim - or some slow parody of swimming, wondering what happened to me
Thurs into Fri: stomach flu (oooh, that happened)
Sat: nap
Sun: swim/bike

Not the week I was hoping for. This week is a new week, and I get 10 more chances for people to cough on me on public transit.

Goals:
Swim x 4
Bike x 5
PT exercises x 14

Last week's goals:
Run x 6 - WIN, including the hilly 15k I wanted to finish off the training for the Toad.
Bike x 2 - WIN + 1
Swim x 4 - WIN, though all were pretty short, I don't seem to have lost much after 1.5 weeks out of the pool.
Core/strength x 4 - WIN

Problem: I think I over-reached a bit. Because the last two long runs I did (29k + 15k for taper) were on Sunday then the following Saturday, I actually ended up running just over 70k in 7 days...1 week before my first 50k race, and right after the week of backpacking (which I think dug me into a bit of a hole itself). So I'm somewhat in damage control right now, trying to rest up and bring some life back to my legs before pounding them into the ground a bit.

This week's goals:
Run x 3
Bike x 1
Swim x 2
Core/strength x 4 w/focus on mobility & stretching

Goals for the 50k on Saturday:
1) Don't get injured
2) Finish
3) Try not to get lapped more than twice, since this particular race is 4 x 12.5k loops and is hosting the Canadian championships this year. Last time I ran there I did the 25k, and was about 3km from the finish line when Ellie Greenwood came flying past me.

Cheers!

I didn't have as great of week as I wanted. Starting was still 5 weeks out from marathon, and wanted at least 60 run miles, but legs tired and achy, so got in just over 50, and long run only 13 miles. It's really been my only bad week of training, so not too depressed.
I did start swimming again and got in two swims.
I signed up for IM KY next August, so that'll give me motivation to keep swimming. I have done 3 IM's and all three really didn't swim much in training, I'm going to try to change my wicked ways and see what happens.

This week - goal 65-70 miles running, w/ long run of 20-24 miles. This is the last week before taper. Run this morning was first one in 1.5 weeks that I felt good, so I think this is obtainable.
I want to swim at least twice.
Biking will have to wait until after the marathon.

GOAL RACE. Marathon 2 marathon, in Marathon TX on Oct 26.

Last week was OK. I missed one short easy run due to feeling tired, so I'm letting that one go.
Swam 2x, biked 3x and ran 5x.
woohoo.
Looking forward to my half marathon this coming Saturday. I'm going for it. PR is my goal. Will let you all know.
Then it's another CX race on Sunday. I didn't think too much about the back to back because I figured I'd be getting killed in the 1/2/3s all year... but then last time I raced CX it went really well and now I'd like to have that happen again this Sunday. I think I just need to let that go and see what happens.

If anyone has any stellar tips for recovery on Saturday... ;)

I think I'm adjusting to doing some workouts in the morning and I even got a new run hat with LEDs in the brim - sales guy sold me on it and well, it works pretty spiffy. Yay.

Goals for this week = way less running, running targeted at racing fast, and more cycling - I love desert riding! Hoping to do more rock climbing this week too.

I didn't run much less and while I did a little speed, I didn't get rested for the race - figured I was going to hike the day before, plus I had some anxiety. Didn't get out climbing but that's ok. I was in Salt Lake City all week visiting my brother, and I had a great time. I am proud of myself for doing a good job adapting to his schedule... goings-on included meeting him for lunch, several walks with the dog, dinner at the fancy restaurant + going to a bar after (got home at 11:30 pm which is so late for me!), and on Friday the mountains had snow so we went up to a ski resort (deserted :-) for a picnic dinner. I had a great time visiting him. I raced on Saturday and while I didn't go as fast as I wanted to, I put Utah on the list of States I've Raced In and it was a fun race.

M - 31 mi bike in Wasatch National Forest
T - 8.1 mi run (Millcreek, UT)
W - 15 mi run (Millcreek, UT)
T - 8.1 mi run (Millcreek, UT)
F - 6 ish mi hike (Mt. Olympus in Millcreek, Utah)
S - 8.8 mi race in Sandy, Utah (6th FOV 1:08:53)
S - 8 mi run in Portland, OR

totals 48 mi run, 31 mi bike, 12 miles of hiking/walking

Now I am back at school... goals for this week are 4-5 swims (2 done), 1-2 rides, 5-6 runs (2 done).

Last week was good-ish. I managed FOUR runs - each one feeling better than the last. I had a super stressful work week though, so it all kinda balanced out in the end. Got in two rides, and an actual (albeit short) swim. Not bad overall. The week before I was in Bend OR to sherpa for P who was doing Leadman full (250). Went for a super sweet mtb ride while he was starting his ride. Felt great. Scale still not showing what I want. Keep at it - work stress did not help.

This week - try to manage my work stress - it's getting pretty bad overall and try to eat better. Run 4x including a XC race on Sat (eek!). Ride twice. Maybe an extra MTB ride if the weather and thus the trails improve. GO for a swim. Heck maybe two.

MistressK - have a great 50K! Good luck!!! :-)

Thanks! I keep telling myself that since I've run 46.2km (at a 6-hour race on a tougher course) before, it's really just one more aid station!

Thankfully, they've changed the forecast from 25mm of rain the day before + 20mm of rain the day of, down to just 5mm of rain the day before and 2-4mm of showers the day of the race. I did a 6-hour in Oct/12 during which it pissed the whole time (probably 30+mm of rain during the race) - the mud made it tough to run on some sections, and since it was only 8c I had trouble working hard enough to keep myself warm. At least Saturday is supposed to be 20c, so I won't have any hypothermia issues!

Interesting to note that last night I surpassed my prior best full-year run mileage, and I still have almost 3 months left in 2013.

Cheers!

Fantastic progress... and yeah better conditions help. I did a 50k in pouring rain and ~5degC and I too had a hard time staying warm through parts. Sounds like almost ideal conditions...AP

i really need to get back into posting regularly on these threads. It keeps me motivated to see the amazing accomplishments of everyone else. Plus the gilt factor of not meeting my goals does help keep me on task :)

Some random accomplishments since I last posted in this thread including a 3rd in AG at a really hard trail half marathon in early September and my first single track mountain bike ride since my last surgery on my wrist. It was nice to be back on the bike. It will be a while before my strength is back and I am able to ride super technical trails with lots of manuals but i'll take the curvy, flowy, fun stuff for now. Dirt is dirt :)

Last week started successful and then got worse as I moved into the weekend. All scheduled workouts were completed Monday through Friday although Mondays swim was moved to Friday as I had a terrible headache on Monday. Nothing was accomplished per plan over the weekend. I was camping with friends at Devils Lake, WI and my long run was turned into a long hike and my long ride was scrapped to go see lions, tigers, and leopards at the WI Big Cat Rescues as that is what my friend who was celebrating his birthday wanted to do. In the end, the rescue was cool. The place rescues cats from illegal zoos, breeding operations and animals that were kept as pets and gives them a place where they can live out their lives. They have large pens and lots of toys. They were very active and it was fun to watch the big cats do the same things my house cats do at home - play with a ball and cardboard box, groom each other and sleep (of course).

This weeks goals are:
2 swims
3 rides (including a VO2 max test)
2 runs
1 strength

I also decided to bail on my 50K/50M. I just don't have it in me. I am having a hard enough time balancing work, workouts, coaching, and general life that I don't need the added stress of a race I really don't want to run. My parents also helped make the decision a bit easier as they decided to come visit that weekend.

I had 2 PT sessions last week and finally feel that my neck is responding to treatment!! I'm glad that I held off on getting the cervical facet injections and hope the recovery continues. My left shoulder is also coming along, I'm getting SO close to full range of motion, I just need that last little bit. My concussion headache is the biggest issue right now - I'm going for another week with no activities that get my heart rate >90 to see if we can get them under control. I'm walking a few times a week and had to cut my swimming to 500 yards a couple of times a week. It's funny how I savor those yards now. Instead of being excited about knocking out my workout, I just try to totally enjoy my 10-11 minutes of swimming - there's something almost therapeutic about those easy swims and it's sad when I'm done.

I feel as if my body is totally deconditioned - I stayed healthy through months of hard training, and I swam almost 80 miles in July-Aug without any ear problems. Now I have an ear/sinus infection, my muscle tone is gone, my resting heart rate has gone up 10-12 bpm, I'm tired, and I even got hurt filing papers this weekend - I pulled a muscle in my back and had some wicked spasms for a couple of days. Really, a Paperwork injury?? I've gone from Ironman to Tinfoil Woman. I need to get my eating under control - after 8 years of fitting into everything in my closet, all of my clothes are tight. I go between giving myself a break and telling myself that it's even more important to eat healthy now. I eat healthy foods, just too much, plus I hit the junk when I'm tired, stressed, in pain, bored... and at least one of those factors is present most of the time. But I'm alive, relatively healthy, and am going to be fine, I know.

A good moment at PT this morning - my PT was working with one of the residents and they were discussing what they saw when they looked at my back. The PT said something about my "swimmer's shoulders" and I was so proud! I may be a guppy, but hey, I've got fish-worthy shoulders ;-)

Everyone take care, I love reading about your workouts and races, it keeps me motivated and feeling connected.

Diane

Agilecipher, congrats on the 50k and SDcali congrats on the 5k pr! Excellent as part of a tri.
And AP swam... hell must have frozen over ;-)
Diane, my fingers are crossed that your headache goes away. My little brother has chronic headaches and I just read a book by Jenette Fulda called 'Chocolate and Vicodin' - memoir of a chronic headache (hers was not from a concussion). It's very funny, and you might enjoy it... hugs!
MistressK, have a great race! and Instigator, glad to see you again.

Thank you!

I almost forgot - I managed to sort through the rest of the photos from the Algonquin trip, so thought I'd share a couple from the day-hike trail we did:

Amazing to think the peak of colour was still a week away.

Lake in the woods.

Tanker contemplating the park.

Cheers!
