New Quarq Powermeter Models..
Quarq just released two new power meters. Looks like they are based off of the most recent SRAM red version. One is the same price as the Red but lighter and the other is about $400 less and abut 50g heavier.

I think the real good news is that the older Saturn power meters will be available cheap very soon on the used market.

I have two SRM's so this might not be the best news for me if resale was in my future..

Release here:

None whatsoever. Might want to check over on the wattage forum. I know a few people have posted pictures that theirs have arrived. I think it will be a little while before we know what kind of bugs (or not) they have. I can imagine with two data streams there is a possibility of some issues. I'm curious to see what happens with those as well.

The Riken looks to be the most promising with the price point. Not sure why they won't offer the shorter crank lengths on that one though since it is the same exact crank arms. Wouldn't be a deal killer for me though since I have an almost a 37' inseam. :)

I noticed, and I guess this isn't surprising, Quarq doesn't support the Rotor crank any longer. Kind of what happened with Zipp removing the PowerTaps from their disc wheels.

Agreed. I have a one year old Quarq that has worked wonderfully. The only issue is that it is 170 mm when for various reasons, not the least of which is a lower back problem, is that I am more comfortable with 165 mm crank arms. If the Riken were available with 165 mm crank arms I would be all over it. As it is, I will likely try to track down a Powertap wheel so that I can use 165 mm cranks which is what I had prior to switching to a Quarq.

Weight difference is 88g between the two models.

Backcountry.com already has some of the quarq cinqo's on sale ($1425 for FSA or $1612 for Rotor).

Great to see they finally have a 165mm option available in the SRAM models.

From the pictures it looks like the crank/spider interface is the same as the S975/cinqo setup, but I just emailed quarq to ask.

I don't get it. What's the difference between this and the old Saturn S975 power meter?

Biggest difference is that power measurement no longer depends on the chainrings you're using. No need to recalibrate when chainrings are swapped or even just taken off the cranks.

Presumably more stable as it doesn't require recalibration after changing chainrings. Standard sized battery. Coded transmission clearly marked with and an indicator showing that it is link and transmitting. Looks a bit more sturdy too. Definitely cooler looking. Looks a lot like the new SRM actually.

According to Quarq, all those things are also in the "new" SRAM Red Quarq from last year, so it's not all that clear to me what is new in these over that one.

Didn't the Qalvin app allow for recalibration after changing chainrings and/or cranks in a fairly easy manner (iphone app)?

I think nothing.

The Red Quarq was the first of this new generation.

The new ones are either a little cheaper or a little lighter than that one.

SRAM bought Quarq, so I think this is the transition (evolution??) to an entirely SRAM based line of powermeters.

This seems like a slam dunk to me.

The Quarq RIKEN has to be the best product on the market.

Reasonable price
Light weight
Works with everything
Company with a good reputation and solid backing
Easy to use
Easy to change chainrings
Easy to calibrate/fix/deal with

If it is as good as advertised, this might be enough to pry my powertap LYC from my fingers - 4 years and 16000 miles might be enough.

granted, I am not an expert on power meters, but I know I will not be upgrading mine until they change from ANT+ to Bluetooth. It would be nice to have the power calculated for both sides separately but it's not enough to make me shell out another $1500-$2000. Change the communication protocol to Bluetooth and it opens up a much wider range of options for cycling computers and accessories.

They were smart to take most all of the SRAM branding off of it too. A crank arm that says Quarq is a bit more palatable to those who may mix groups than one that has the SRAM nascar graphic on the back of the crank arm.

From what I understand, the inside of each crank arm says SRAM loud and clear (similar to the graphics on Red and Force cranksets).

I wonder if they are still going to be offering the option to purchase the spider without crankarms (for S-Works, Hollowgram, cranks).

The pictures on their website doesn't show them like that. The new RED version is like that for sure though. They are still selling spiders on their website. Only the high end one though.

You're correct, the graphics on the new Quarq ELSA and RIKEN arms are not like the Red version. If you look at the photos on our website (http://www.quarq.com/quarq-elsa-10r), those are the actual crank arms the units are shipped with. They do say "powered by SRAM" on the back of the arm, but it's a lot smaller than the Red version arms. These power meters are shipped with are SRAM rings, but they don't have a hidden chainring bolt like the Red version, so one can more easily swap rings in the field.

Mieke,
Any response to those of us existing Quarq users they have long been waiting for shorter crank arm lengths? Since both arms look to easily swappable, perhaps aftermarket sales of crank arms below 170mm??

Seriously, Mieke, I think you guys have a home run here.

I can't think of anything else I would want in a power meter.

And price point is good.

I've been a powertap fan for a long time, but I think I'm switching.

Great work.

Is there a technology difference or an advantage of the new ELSA 10R? I am in the process of ordering one now and prefer the look of the SRAM Red but performance trumps aesthetics...most of the time. Is the SRAM Red basically obselete/discontinued and I should get the ELSA or are they essentially equivalent besides the weight? Thanks!

The shorter crank lengths are only available when ordering a complete ELSA or RIKEN unit.

The technology is the same between the SRAM RED and ELSA powermeters. The SRAM Red version is certainly continuing. It's the SRAM S975 Quarq model with the larger electronics pod that has been discontinued.

The main difference is the SRAM Red Quarq is sold with Yaw compatible chainrings which are what you'd want to use with the newest SRAM Red drivetrain that has the Yaw deraileur. It has one of the chainring bolts hidden behind the crank arm. The crank arms are branded "SRAM".

The ELSA powermeter has the same features as the RED Quarq (power balance, 1.5% accuracy, etc), but it comes with the standard Red Black 10 speed chainrings without a hidden bolt. This allows folks in the field to more easily change their chainrings. The crank arms are branded "Quarq".

In other words, I'd say base your decision on which drive train you are planning to use the powermeter with.

Well the Red is the same generation of equipment. Can change chainrings, higher accuracy (big!!). Those who purchased any other Quarq unit didn't get that. Which is part of why we payed less.

That's me too. I just installed the S975 less than a week ago. I'm wondering if I should now just sell it 50 miles used and buy the Riken. I had no idea new models were coming out. Is the new technology any better? I'm not apt to change chainrings out (except for replacements), so is there any advantage to the new design?

Improved accuracy is the biggest thing. The broken is a bit heavier, thebelsa a bit lighter than the s975. Obviously the changing chainrings and I'm wondering if with the new spider/crank set interface which has less issues with chainring stiffness if the zero offset might have less drift.

Just like computers, something better comes out all the time. However, for me, I have less than 50 trainer miles on my new S975. I'm wondering if it would be a good idea to sell the S975 and buy the new Riken. Or, do I just live with the S975?

I don't know - my purchase of the Quarq was just bad timing.

If you want to be one of the guys I'm going to be following on ebay shortly. With the newer one out I'm betting you won't get nearly as much as your hoping for that one even if it's only been ridden 50 miles. I'm counting on there being a bunch of quarqs on ebay shortly- that or I guess I'll go with a power2max.

Does anyone know the actual weight of the Quarq Red vs the Elsa without the chainrings? I see on there website
the Red is 778g and the Elsa is 735g, but how much of this is due to the chainrings. Also the weight difference of the
2013 rings vs the older black rings?

I tried searching but can't find anything conclusive.

I spoke to Quarq about this a couple of weeks ago. Although I don't have the numbers in front of me right now, they confirmed that most of the (minor) weight savings that the Elsa enjoys over the SRAM Red version is due to chainrings. As I recall, it's at least half of the 43g difference.

If I'm not mistaken its about the same as the S975 was/is. It doesnt use the hollowed out crank arms of the Elsa and Red and utilizes a slightly larger electronics pod/meter.

I am 95% happy with my Elsa. The missing 5% is a couple minor gripes in that once you purchase a Quarq, your not done. First, in order to apply firmware updates you need Qalvin (Quarqs free app) and most likely the Wahoo Fitness Key (not so free). Second, if it weren't for Slowtwitch, I'm not sure how one is to know if there is a firmware update needed/available. I still think the cool kids must know a secret Quarq handshake or something in regard to getting updates.

All that said, Quarq customer service is fantastic. Again, I'm 95% happy with my Elsa.

Not sure the left/right power balance has panned out to be big deal for me other than something that is fun to look at. It doesn't vary more than 2-3% and it constantly changes based on effort. Probably would be just as happy with the Riken, however, I was too ancy to wait for it to come out at the time:)

Two Thumbs Up on The Elsa.

Thanks for the update, I just downloaded the Quarq App to my iPhone to see check out the features. I already have a Wahoo Fitness Key, so I'm ahead of the power curve that. I have a Full Dura-Ace group set with Di2 shifters so I'm very weary about switching out my crank, but I'm done waiting on the Vector & I need power now. So I'll probably going to go with the Quarq.
