Achilles pain swimming?
So this is a new one, at least for me. I've been dealing with all the regular running pain stuff (IT band, piriformis, shin splints) and I know, generally, what causes them and how to take care of them. Basically was my left IT band, then ignored last year until it cascaded down, and over, to everything else.

However, I've started noticing that my left ankle/achilles hurts on the downstroke of my kick when I swim. I haven't previously had any problems with it running or biking. And once I'm done kicking, it doesn't hurt anymore, only when the kick extends the foot.

Thoughts? Is it anything to worry about? I don't really feel it during a race (probably because I'm focused on, well, everything else), only in the pool.

Anybody? No one has heard of this? I keep searching but all I am finding are threads/sites talking about using the pool as rehab *for* and achilles injury.

My personal experience is that swimming was a great rehab exercise and my Achilles always felt about 2000% better after a swim session.

Sorry...no experience with pain while swimming.

Are you sure it is your achilles tendon? More likely the posterior ankle *near* your achilles with something like posterior impingement syndrome or a painful os trigonum or something you are noticing with full plantarflexion of the ankle on the downstroke swimming.

Are you sure it is not from pushing off the wall?

when I had really bad achilles problems I swam with a pull buoy because kicking made it hurt.

If it only hurts on the down kick, you might be using your calf some then. Work on loosening up the calf, not just stretching but deep massage with a tennis ball or lacrosse ball if you can stand it-you'll know when you've found the spot the needs to be worked ;-)

it's arguable that aqua jogging helps running if you're injured. I hazard a guess that NOBODY thinks aqua jogging will help swimming at all.

Hey there!

I have the same issue. How tight are the ligaments in the offending ankle? Something I've found is that I can avoid the pain and pinching, squashing feeling by gently tensing the tibialis anterior during the downstroke. I also find that consistently keeping said muscle strong (swimming with reef flippers a couple of times a week works well for me) also helps mitigate symptoms.

Additionally, good stability in the foot and ankle seem to help. Consistent running doesn't seem to do much, but consistent forefoot running on trails seems to really help a lot.

I hope that's of use!
