marathon time vs. 1/2 IM split + HR?
Hey all,

Planning on running a marathon in a couple months. How should a marathon time compare with the 1/2 marathon split from a half IM?(assume you paced and run well in the 1/2 IM - similar courses/fitness...). Anyone have any advice/thoughts on heart rates for a (planned) 3:20-3:30 marathon. I ran a 1:41 at 1/2 vineman - my biking heart rates were in the low 150's - running heart rates were in the low 150's at the start of the run buiding to low 160's. I paced and ran the 1/2 marathon very well (ran faster than I thought I could run a stand-alone 1/2 marathon). I run 10K's with a heart rates in the low 170's. My run LT is aout 175. I cruise long runs (2 hours) in the 130-140's usually and will build to the low 150's if I feel strong. Thanks.

I've run 2 1/2 IM's both at the end of June in Texas, and I've run 4 marathons all in the months between Oct. and Jan. For me, the marathon is almost exactly double the 1/2 IM run.

I've estimated my LTHR from 172-175 and I always start the marathon at 155 then build to 160-165 by mile 21. After that, it doesn't matter what your watch says, you need to run how you feel.

I have to agree with tom completely on this one. The only difference is that my 1/2IM were in June and July in the northeast, and my marathons were in january and october. My heartrate off the bike was on par with my 1/2 way hr in the marathon (about 160). My starting HR for the marathon is about 155 which is coincedentally identical to tom's. Maybe he is my evil twin brother?

"Maybe you should just run faster..." TM
