Why are gas prices so high?
Make your own conclusion... But Obama tells you he is working to lower the price of oil when he previously said that under his economic plan the prices will have to go up... His secretary of energy agrees to this and says that the oil prices should go up to European price levels. Was he lying then or is he lying now?

The avg price of oil Jan 2009 $1.83 (Obama's Inauguration Day)

False but nice try.

If the CEO of Apple announced tomorrow that they were going to move production of all of their products to the US and use union labor would it effect the cost of their product as well as hurt their stock? Would the speculation over how it would change the cost of each product not create uncertainty?

Global markets can still be swayed by members of that market. Everytime there is a hiccup in the ME prices jump so what if there was a hiccup and the US said "Game on. We are going to grant drilling permits and open up the gulf and ANWR and push shale drilling to the max".

The Global Market does not work only in one direction.

Of course shady distributors and stations don't help. Yesterday I drove through a town and gas was was $3.42 a gallon. I turned around two minutes later and the price at the same stations jumped to $3.80 a gallon. There was no reason. There was no ME crisis. The station on the other side of town at WalMart didnt drop their prices and stayed at $3.42 and they were packed. So we had a nearly $.40 a gallon increase in 2 minutes across the board and three different chains. Why? It was nothing more than manipulation of the price based on nothing. I can see price fluctuations of more than $.20 a gallon in towns 5 miles apart ( similar population, similar locations) at the same chain stations. Why is that?

So you are admitting that Bush and Chenney had nothing to do with oil prices back when they were in charge.

I do remember the news media blaming them all of the time for the high price of gas.

So if Obama says tomorrow that he will close all oil rigs in the Gulf, that would not have an effect in the price of Gas?

Gas prices went up, now they have started to go down. What did Pres. Obama do to cause this shift? If you want to blame him for one, give him credit for the other. Draw your own batty conclusions if you like.

Long term, gas prices are going to go up. I don't know why this is such radical thinking for some of us. Sure it sucks. That's life isn't it?

Really.

A few things that can be done:
1. Oil pipeline between US and Canada
2. Allow more exploration
3. Allow more drilling
4. Continue research on green sources of energy BUT without phasing out OIL until you finally got something that works that can reliably replace oil.

I don't think those calling bullshit are saying he is the only thing that can cause price changes because that is obviously not the case. But to say that the President of the United States policies don't/can't change things is naive, oblivious to the real world or just wants to argue.

The prices went down a few cents... true...

But I can't give him credit for that because he said many times on countless interviews that he has no control over the price of oil. So which one is it: does he controls the price of oil or not?

You are only taking supply side. What about lowering demand? Urban planning, transit & cycling. Strict efficiency standards for vehicles. Model the behavior that you want other countries to emulate, now they want to emulate the US and when it comes to China and India that will cause massive prick shocks.

You are just trolling. You are displaying virtually no knowledge about how oil prices are actaully determined and fixating on attacking the president for conflicting prior statements, when those statements don't have any substantial impact on oil prices.

You can't give him credit when the price goes down, but you can blame him when the price goes up?

(President Chavez in Venezuela must be doing everything right. Gas is less than $0.10 per gallon there.)

Thats impossible because all of the oil in the world goes into one big pool so no matter how much you have or how much you drill it doesnt matter. Thats the argument we hear every day isnt it?

Old Chavez. "if they come and build it we can take it for ourselves."

What a guy.

It'll go up, then go to lower levels then it is now.

One of many reasons oil prices are high again is because of high domestic output. "Drill baby drill" backfired and made everything worse.

Obama and his energy secretary said explicitly that they wanted the oil price to go up, why is this so difficult to see? There is a lot the president can do to swing the prices in either direction... and they have done that. Now that that they are not so popular the prices are mysteriously coming down.

Like you said Hugo Chavez is doing something right... I guess he doesn't buy oil from the Saudis as he has enough to be independent and then export some. Of course Chavez is wrong in many other issues... But boy when he comes to energy policy he is right.

Well, the price of oil in world markets is denominated in dollars, and the president does nominate the chairman of the Fed. Of course, in that regard Bush and Obama are equally to blame, both having nominated Bernanke.

Venezuela isn't independent. They are part of OPEC. They have state owned oil companies. The reason gas prices are so low there is because of subsidies.

The US uses a higher percentage of domestic oil than Venezuela does. You are saying we should nationalize all oil production and subsidize the hell out of it.

Do you think you're not you're already subsidizing Big Oil by the what you're paying at the pumps? At least by nationalizing their oil Venezuela can claim ownership of it.

Not by any ordinary understanding of what "subsidize" means. Even definition 3 doesn't work, since when I pay at the pumps I get gas as my quid pro quo.

sub·si·dy   /ˈsʌbsɪdi/ Show Spelled[suhb-si-dee] Show IPA
noun, plural sub·si·dies.
1.
a direct pecuniary aid furnished by a government to a private industrial undertaking, a charity organization, or the like.
2.
a sum paid, often in accordance with a treaty, by one government to another to secure some service in return.
3.
a grant or contribution of money.
4.
money formerly granted by the English Parliament to the crown for special needs.

Definition #2 seems to fit pretty well... we help police the ME through military aid in return for friendlier treatment from the oil sheiks. Do you really not think we devote a disproportionate amount of our military expenitures towards maintaining order in oil-rich regions while we essentially just look the other way in many parts of the world that are equally dysfunctional if not more so (e.g. much of central Africa)?

Cerveloguy was talking about subsidizing them "at the pumps." We no doubt subsidize them through our tax money (including military expenditures), but not through what we pay at the pumps.

Did you forget to update this thread?

Gasoline prices likely won't set any records this summer, thanks to a recent drop in the price of oil.
The government Tuesday slashed its forecast for average gas prices to $3.79 per gallon for the summer driving season. That's down from an initial estimate of $3.95 and below 2008's record average of $3.80.
